Some Thoughts on the Sidra By Barry Colman

Following Yosef’s second dream, the Torah states:“Now, his brothers went to pasture their father’s flock in Shechem” (Bereishit 37:12). Shechem was the site of the massacre Shimon and Levi had recently perpetrated following the assault on Dinah their sister. Because of this Yaakov and his family were under imminent danger of attack by the inhabitants of the area; only by a miracle had they emerged unscathed, as it is written: “They set out, and there fell a Godly terror on the cities which were around them, so that they [the inhabitants] did not pursue Yaakov’s sons” (ibid 35:5). The tribes surrounding Shechem had intended to pursue and destroy Yaakov’s entire family, but Hashem intervened and prevented them from doing so. Strangely enough, Yaakov’s sons returned to the scene of the massacre, exposing themselves to mortal danger. The brothers did not seem particularly concerned over the potential dangers of this trip, yet Yaakov was extremely anxious:And Yisrael said to Yosef, “ Your brothers are pasturing in Shechem, are they not? Come, I will send you to them.” He [Yosef] said to him [Yaakov]: “Here I am!” (hineini) (ibid 37:13)The short response of Yosef implies that he recognised the dangerous nature of going to Shechem, with the Hebrew word hineini indicating a firm resolve to what had been instructed, regardless of the danger involved. However, why did Yaakov decide to risk Yosef’s life and send him to Shechem? The danger of Canaanite’s taking revenge on Yosef for the fall of Shechem was a clear and present danger. Additionally, Yaakov knew that his other sons hated Yosef with a passion, having previously taken their swords to him. Yaakov was not taking into consideration the possibility that his sons would take advantage of this situation and fight Yosef far away from his watching eyes?Complicating this further:“So [Yaakov] sent him [Yosef} from the depth of Chevron” (ibid 37:14)Rashi points out that Chevron is situated on top of a mountain. Not in a valley as is implied by “depth of Chevron”.He asserts that the Torah here is alluding to the deep words of the righteous man who is buried in Chevron, in fulfilment of his promise to Avraham: “And He said to Avram, “Know with certainty that your offspring shall be aliens in a land not their own – and they will serve them, and they will oppress them – four hundred years” (ibid 15:13).According to Rashi’s explanation, we would believe that Yaakov knowingly sent Yosef to Shechem so that he would be sold as a slave and taken to Egypt? If so, why did Yaakov later mourn Yosef’s disappearance? From what Rashi has said, it seems Yaakov’s behaviour was all an act, since apparently he knew that Yosef was being held in Egypt. What Rashi is actually teaching us is that Yaakov sent Yosef to Shechem in an effort to stop the immi-nent exile of which Hashem spoke to Avraham. Had the brothers submitted to Yosef’s supremacy and acknowledged his leadership, Yosef’s dreams would have come true and there would have been no need for four hundred years of excile andslavery. Yaakov knew exactly what he was doing by risking Yosef’s life. Unfortunately, Yosef’s brothers failed by selling Yosef.

The Chanukah Tilt There is a certain beauty to the festival of Chanukah and the core mitzvah of “pirsumei nissa” publicising the miracle through the lighting of the Chanukia.

The miracles of Chanukah are twofold. One is the military victory of the Maccabees against overwhelming forces; the second is that the oil burned in the rededicated Menorah for eight days, while there had only been enough oil for one. On recapturing the

Temple, the Maccabees had deliberated whether it was better to light the lamp immediately, though it would soon extinguish, or whether they should wait until new oil had been refined and they could keep the everlasting light alight. As we know, in their zeal they chose to light immediately, and miraculous intervention kept the lamp burning till more pure oil was ready. At the heart of each of the miracles is Hashem’s timely support, extending our existing endeavours. We cannot guarantee miracles in our lives, but even when we depend upon them, we must put in the effort; we should not just sit back and wait for them to happen. The Menorah itself is deeply symbolic. It was placed in the chamber immediately outside the Holy of Holies, which contained the Ark of the Covenant and the 10 Commandments. According to most sources the Menorah was positioned, so that one end was close to the curtain of the Holy of Holies in the west and ran towards the eastern entrance. Though the Everlasting Light was the westernmost of the branches, the lamps were all tilted towards the central axis. It would have been natural to angle them straight up. It would have been easy to understand if each had been inclined towards the Holy of Holies – this would be consistent with our spiritual yearning to come close. Granted, however, that the lamps

were tilted towards the centre, then half the lamps would have been angled towards the Holy of Holies – but those closest would be angled away. On one level, this symbolises that our relationship with Hashem runs two ways. We direct ourselves towards Him. At the same time, the Divine Presence radiates its warmth in our direction. On another level, The Maharal of Prague (d1609) teaches that the Menorah represents the spiritual aspirations of the Jewish people, a flame climbing heavenwards off diverse wicks. Some of us are closer to the Holy of Holies. Some of us are further removed. Even so, our flames pull in one direction – and that is to the centre. Together we are one. Our Torah is open to diverse avenues and our people branch in many ways. So often each seems to be pulling in its own way towards its own image of the Holy of Holies, with scant regard for the other. Let us take it upon ourselves to harness the metaphor of the Menorah. Rooted in a central axis of Torah, may those who represent the eternal light and are close to the Holy of Holies, as well as those who are further removed, incline themselves just a little more towards the centre. May we shine brightly, separate wicks pulling together – towards unity in our communities. If we all try just a little – that would be a miracle worth publicising! Shabbat Shalom and Chanukah Sameach.

Rabbi Jeremy Lawrence

THIS WEEK’S HAFTORAH BY RABBI ANDREWS This week’s Haftorah comes from Amos 2:6-3:8. In it, the Navi (Prophet) issues a blistering rebuke of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. He lists off a catalogue of abuses mostly dealing with the systemic injustices in that society. Most notably, the reading begins with the passuk (verse): “Thus said the LORD: For three transgressions of Israel, For four, I will not revoke it. Because they have sold for silver Those whose cause was just, And the needy for a pair of sandals” (2:6).

The rabbis in the Midrash connect this passuk to our Parsha (weekly reading) and explain this castigation was in actuality directed at Yosef’s (Joseph) brothers who sold him into slavery. According to this interpretation, the brothers sold Yosef in exchange for shoes.

This first verse of the Haftorah also attracts the attention of the Talmud. In Tractate Yoma, the Rabbis explain that Hashem (God) does not count the first three times one commits a particular sin. Only the fourth time on is recorded. The Rambam (Maimonides) in the Laws of Repentance (3:1) canonises this idea in his code.

Amos also outlines the ways that the wealthy in Israel oppressed the poor. Greed among the Israelites led to the profaning of God’s name. The wealthy offered korbanot (sacrifices) on the mizbeach (alter) while wearing clothing taken wrongly from the poor. The Navi criticises this deception and recalls all the good Hashem did for the B’nei Yisroel.

If you find yourself at Kinloss over the course of the day, please stop by the office to say hello! I can usually be found there during the regular office hours (except Thursday).
