welcome
What an exciting time to be part of Christ the King! The Lord continues to be at work among us and is weekly adding to our number, growing us in grace, and equipping us to love and serve him here in Houston and beyond. If you are reading this and you have been part of Christ the King for a long time, you may have noticed that the format of The Scroll has changed. For those of you who are new to Christ the King, The Scroll has been a part of Christ the King from our earliest days, evolving from a two-sided black and white newsletter to this latest format. The Scriptures tell us that our church is a body, and as a body “there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.” (1 Corinthians 12:4-6) So our hope is that through The Scroll you’ll be able to see how the Lord is at work throughout the various parts of the church.
WORSHIP, KNOW, AND SERVE. These words have been the mission statement of Christ the King since its inception. Below you will see icons representing these words that will be rolled out in the life of the church over the next year. We created these icons to clarify and focus our communications as we seek to live out the mission the Lord has given us and as we long to see his Kingdom powerfully extended in Houston and beyond.

We are excited to welcome mary raine Ivy as our newest student ministry coordinator. Born and raised in Memphis, Mary Raine comes from a great extended family that conveniently lives on one street! From growing up with many cousins and two brothers to being a junior high leader at Second Presbyterian Church while in high school, Mary Raine never takes herself too seriously. Going to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Mary Raine joined Chi Omega and served as New Member Educator, fondly referred to as “Mama Hootie,” and was an RUF leader all four years. She has spent the last two summers working with the youth group at Oak Mountain Presbyterian in Birmingham, which is where she learned she loves ministry, even though she does not flourish on the ultimate frisbee field (although she bought cleats for the
occasion). Her unofficial love languages include laughing and baking chocolate chip cookies. She loves building relationships and cannot wait to spend time with the Christ the King students!
This summer the Student Ministry is blessed to have former Christ the King alumnus moody Heard join the staff as Student Ministry Intern. Moody will be coming off his freshman year at Washington and Lee University and will be returning to Houston this June and July to give his time to the students in our program. Moody will bring his one-of-a-kind sense of humor to a very dry and humorless youth staff . Our students will rally around his leadership just as they did when Moody was in high school. As someone who plays guitar, mandolin, and college football, Moody will be bringing a wildly diverse set of skills to the table, not to mention his proclivity for dancing in public. But in all seriousness, Moody has one of the kindest hearts we’ve ever seen in a young man his age, and his love for God and for this ministry is going to be a shining light in our church body this year. Christ the King Student Ministry is thrilled to welcome Moody Heard as our 2013 Summer Intern.

As a church family, we have been in our new facility for almost three years. What an exciting and eventful season this has been in the life of our church! One of the most exciting things that has happened is continued growth in the number of people who are entering our doors on Sunday mornings to encounter Christ during worship.
In order to be the most hospitable hosts possible, and in order to make worship more accessible to our congregation, beginning August 18, 2013, we will be offering three identical worship services on Sunday mornings at Christ the King. The times for worship will be 8:30 a.m., 9:45 a.m., and 11:00 a.m.
I know it can be disorienting any time a change like this occurs, so I wanted to take some time to explain why the Session of Christ the King enthusiastically endorses this transition.
The major impetus for moving to three services is the Strategic Vision of Christ the King, in which the Session crafted a vision for three-fold growth in our church: first, in our ability to reach more people through the resources the Lord has given us on Silber Road; second, in our depth of discipleship as followers of Christ; and third, in our reach to an increasingly diverse and secular city through church planting and partnerships.
Since we moved into our new facility in September 2010, our worship attendance has increased by over 30%. On Easter Sunday 2013, we had 1300 people in attendance. Offering three services will demonstrate to newcomers that there is room for them to encounter the gospel at Christ the King.
In order to “ease into” this transition, beginning June 2, we will change our worship times to 9:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. We intend to make this possible by making our services
roughly 65-minutes in length without significantly impacting the worship liturgy at Christ the King. This means that, during the summer, we will start later and end earlier than we do now. On August 18 we will drop in the 8:30 a.m. worship service as a third option.
I know you will have a lot of questions about how this change will impact you and your families, particularly as it relates to Children’s Ministry, Student Ministry, and adult Spiritual Growth Classes. The Christ the King staff and Session will
endeavor to answer every question clearly and also receive your feedback as we move forward.
I am very excited about this transition and believe it will be healthy for our church family and our mission to extend Christ’s kingdom in Houston. Please join me in prayer that the Lord will powerfully be at work as we continue to endeavor to worship him in Spirit and in truth.

At our Pathfinders for Men breakfast, a group of guys in their 20’s and 30’s enjoyed an amazing talk from David Duren based on Hebrews 12:1-14 about the importance of (1) zealously running the race God has set before us; (2) of redeeming the time God has given us by investing it in the things that matter most (God, family, etc.); and (3) looking to Jesus, who has run the race before us, securing our victory. The men were greatly blessed by both David’s personal experiences and his guidance.

On Sunday, April 7, we had a reception to celebrate the ministry of Jared and Erin Huffman at Christ the King, and to bid them farewell as they transition to their new home. The Huffmans are moving to Lookout Mountain, near Chattanooga, TN, where Jared has accepted a call to ministry at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church. As ministry leaders and beloved members of our church family, Jared, Erin, Knox, and Cormac will all be dearly missed.
