THE SCIENCE OF LOVE exhibition explores the three different stages of love by uncovering the hormones, emotions, and scientific degrees in how we come to feel that undeniable feeling for others.

Through lust, attraction, and attachment the exhibition renders information about how each stage leads to the next and builds upon one another. Each stage has been given a panel of information (2 for Lust, divded by Testerosterone and Estrogen) while utilizing a combination of visuals to help express each phase. In the center of the museum is an interactive musical “ear” that allows the user to play songs and sounds that trigger their sense of hearing correlated to the different phases. The users may also record “love messages” to loved ones and send them to phones or social media.

Hexagon shapes adorn the floor throughout the museum exhibition to alude to the atomic structure of the different hormones discussed in the space.

THE SEX HORMONE PHASE

E

Estrogens are hormones that are important for sexual and reproductive development, mainly in women. They

are also referred to as female sex hormones.

Estrogens are hormones that are important for sexual and reproductive development, mainly in women. They are also referred to as female sex hormones.

In women, estrogen is produced mainly in the ovaries, but it is also produced by fat cells and the adrenal gland. Estrogen is involved in the onset of puberty, playing a role in development of so-called secondary sex characteristics, such as breasts, and pubic and armpit hair. It also helps regulate

the menstrual cycle.

Testosterone is part of a class of male hormones called androgens. In men,

testosterone is produced mainly in the testes, and production is controlled by the

brain's hypothalamus, and also the pituitary gland.

Testosterone is involved in the development of male sex organs, and the development of

secondary sex characteristics at puberty, such as voice deepening and growth of

facial and body hair.

Testosterone is a male sex hormone that is important for sexual and reproductive development. Women also produce testosterone, but at lower levels than men.

Attachment is a longer lasting commitment and is the bond that keeps couples together when they

go on to have children. Important in this stage are two hormones released by the

nervous system, which are thought to play a role in social attachments.

STAGE 3 THE PROLONGED LOVE PHASE

This is what takes over after the attraction stage, if a relationship is going to last. People couldn’t stay in the attraction stage forever (otherwise they’d never get any work done)!

This is released by the hypothalamus gland during child birth and also helps the breast express milk. It helps cement the strong bond between mother and child. It is also released by both sexes during orgasm and it is thought that it promotes bonding when adults are intimate. The theory goes that the more sex a couple has, the deeper their bond becomes.

OXYTOCIN

Another important chemical in the long-term commitment stage. It is an important controller of the kidney and its role in long-term relationships was discovered when scientists studied prairie voles.

VASOPRESSIN

Otherwise known as adrenalin, it starts us sweating and gets the heart racing!

One of love’s most important chemicals and one that may actually send us temporarily insane.

Also activated by cocaine and nicotine (your love is my drug).DOPAMINE

NOREPINEPHRINE

SEROTONIN

In this stage, a group of

neuro-transmitters called

‘monoamines’ play an

important role!

When people fall in love they can’t think of nothing else; They

may even lose their appetite or and need less sleep preferring

to spend hours at a time daydreaming about their new lover.
