BECauSE aNImal HEalTH IS our HEalTH

At Merck Animal Health we’ve begun a new chapter. It’s a chapter being written to meet the demands of a world changing in more ways than we could have imagined.

Every day our customers and partners face challenges that are wider, more complex and developing faster than ever. Not least how animal health is now so tied to our own.

Today, ThE sciENcE of hEalThiEr aNimals is also the science of food safety and supply, of international public health. it’s the science of keeping people happy by protecting and caring for their family pets.

meat and dairy consumption for example, is at the heart of changing lifestyles around the globe. as asian and latin-american economies continue to flourish, so does the appetite for protein-rich diets. a 50% increase in demand for animal protein is expected in the next 10 years. so we must keep developing vital vaccines like Porcilis PcV for swine, and pharmaceuticals like NUflor for cattle, to help producers fight diseases that devastate production.

Keeping our protein supplies plentiful also means investing in sustainable business. Programs like our slicE sustainability Project which, developed in close partnership with fish farmers, helps control parasites more sustainably and keeps animal health products effective. in turn it improves the efficiency and long-term value of fish production.

We know too that global trade, migrating people and climate change may increase the spread of highly infectious diseases like foot-and-mouth disease, and zoonotic diseases like avian flu. only a fast, flexible approach to vaccination will stop them. NoBilis salenvac T and NoBilis influenza are just two of the vaccines helping us control the spread of pathogens into our food supplies and communities.

finally, we will strive to protect and prolong our relationships with the pets at the heart of our families. We’re investing in medicines for age-related diseases – like us, pets are living longer – as well as in healthier, more effective ways to approach parasites with treatments like acTiVYl.

Whatever we do to evolve our health platforms in the future, one thing is clear: No business, no government can meet these challenges alone. Today we stand in full knowledge that to succeed we need the joint effort, expertise and insight of all of our stakeholders, customers and partners.

so while our commitment to scientific progress continues, so does our understanding of what that progress means to our customers in the real world. as the people behind ThE sciENcE of hEalThiEr aNimals, we know we must also understand the science of running a business, of feeding a nation, of maintaining healthier populations. as such, we’ll make sure we have the products, technologies, services and insight to tackle our customers’ commercial, operational and governmental demands.

We’ll put every inch of our experience, resources, and pioneering spirit behind them.

We will be driven by their challenges. Their prosperity will be ours.

Richard R. DeLuca Jr. President, Merck Animal Health

sharing information is one of the best ways we can help customers better manage and care for their animals. in 1955 merck published the first edition of the now world-famous merck Veterinary manual. Ever since, our practice of sharing knowledge and expertise has lived on.

Global animal management is the part of our company that develops innovative technologies to help producers identify, monitor and sell their livestock. With our Tri-mEriT program for cattle, we’re helping them maximize the health and value of their animals.

integrating products and emerging technologies is more efficient and cost-effective for our partners. our dedicated swine health service rEsPiG, for example, provides cutting-edge insights into complex respiratory diseases, vaccines and ways to limit stock losses.

most importantly our holistic approach is embedded right into how each arm of our company operates. animal diseases rarely occur in isolation. in poultry for example, respiratory problems are often complicated by a whole host of other factors – like their vaccination schedule. Eradicating disease takes a carefully crafted program that tackles them all.

so, at merck animal health, our veterinarians, scientists and business experts work together in teams centered around significant categories of disease, not just single products. it means they’re free to dive deep into what really influences the spread and virulence of pathogens. This cross-fertilization across research areas helps us accelerate the development of complete animal health solutions.

6 The science of healThier animals

When Merck and Schering-Plough merged in 2009, we became a division of the second-largest health company in the world.

The animal health expertise of our three original companies; merck, intervet and schering-Plough animal health, dates back at least 60 years. The establishment of each was sparked by breakthrough ideas – ideas from people with the intelligence and spirit to take on the diseases they saw harming the animals, people and livelihoods around them.

Merck in the 1930s merck scientists in the Us were seeking a drug for human streptococcal infection. instead they found sulfaquinoxaline, which proved to be a highly effective treatment for coccidiosis in chickens. merck wasted no time turning it into a drug, and started a soon to be successful animal health division.

Intervet it was feed manufacturer Wim hendrix who laid the foundations of intervet in 1949 in the Netherlands. he observed that ‘sick chickens don’t eat’, and set about enlisting scientists to create the first ever vaccine for fowl Pox. it was one of many firsts intervet was to bring to the animal health market.

Schering-Plough Animal Health schering-Plough’s animal health division was formally established in 1955 in the Us. it was created to supply demand for the corticosteroid prednisone (originally a human drug), to fight ketosis in dairy cattle. The original sales team of three, grew ten-fold in two years, and went on to establish a leading position in the animal health market.

animal diseases still cost farmers a significant proportion of their meat, fish and dairy yield. Preventing disease-related costs will be crucial if we are to meet the demand for protein, created by rising standards of living and population growth. in addition, the land and water available for agriculture will only decrease. so not only will our animals have to be healthier, they will have to be reared more efficiently too.

our portfolio is already focused on helping farmers keep their livestock productive. Targeted intervention with vaccines, therapeutics and performance technologies

ensures that animals reach their full weight in good health.

our global reach also means few companies are better placed to limit production losses from epidemics. To tackle foot-and-mouth disease for example, merck animal health has the resources, including antigen banks managed on behalf of governments, to better prevent and manage outbreaks across international borders.

rumINaNTS

The lives of millions of people around the world depend on the health of their cattle, sheep and goat herds. But with fewer natural resources, and changes in our climate, we must rear them more efficiently, and continue to eradicate diseases that lower meat and milk yields.

our portfolio for ruminants is organized into eight specific health platforms. Provided under the umbrella name EXPErTis, our products and services have been developed to work together around our customers’ greatest needs. our health platforms are:

• HerdHealth

• LungHealth

• NeonatalHealth

• ParasiteControl

• PartnersinReproduction

• PerformanceTechnology

• SheepHealth

• UdderHealth

Tackling the world’s most virulent infectious diseases is the first step in ensuring reliable meat and milk supplies. collaboration with veterinarians, farmers, regulators and scientists has helped us implement herd health programs in many regions of the world. BoVilis BVD, for control of bovine viral diarrhea, is now one of the most important vaccines for dairy cattle in Europe. BoVilis BTV8 was developed in less than two years, in rapid response to the spread of the bluetongue virus across Europe in 2007.

controlling parasites is also vital to help farmers ensure maximum productivity. our parasite control platform includes a full range of worm and fluke control products, including the anthelmintic PaNacUr/safE-GUarD (fenbendazole) and the antiprotozal drug halocUr (halofuginone lactate).

our lung health platform provides customers with tailor-made programs to tackle complex problems like bovine respiratory disease. it also includes antibiotics like NUflor (florfenicol) and rEsflor (florfenicol plus flunixin). and vaccines that guard against infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (iBr) and parainfluenza-3 (Pi3).

Products that improve performance are key to efficient, sustainable production. Products like ZilmaX (zilpaterol), ralGro (zeranol) and rEValor (trenbolone/estradiol) are proven to improve feed conversion and aid weight gain.

increasing meat supplies relies on a more intensive, large-scale approach to farming. larger animal groups need to be carefully protected from disease. Ecological upheavals, and the migration of parasites and wild animals, can all encourage the spread of zoonoses – which is a particular threat for our swine farmers.

To help them control the swine influenza virus (siV) we have developed maXiVac Excel 5.0. it is the first pentavalent inactivated vaccine to control most common strains of swine influenza.

similarly, in the fight against Escherichia coli, merck animal health offers producers Porcilis Porcoli Df.

other important swine vaccines include Porcilis PcV and circUmVENT PcV/mhyo which prevent the spread of porcine circovirus type 2, a cause of growth retardation in swine. Porcilis Prrs provides protection against the virus responsible for porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, and Porcilis aPP, a subunit vaccine, reduces pulmonary lesions caused by Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae infection.

apart from vaccines, the swine pharmaceutical range includes the antibiotics NUflor (florfenicol), coBacTaN (cefquinome) and ZUPrEVo (tildipirosin) as well as PaNacUr aquasol (fenbendazole), a potent antiparasitic.

our new iDal vaccinator, which allows needleless intradermal administration, will make vaccination easier and more efficient for swine producers.

meeting consumer demand is the key to success for our poultry customers. like the demand for impeccable food safety.

salmonella is one of the most common food-borne, disease-causing bacteria, and can cause severe gastroenteritis in humans. our food safety Platform combines vaccines like NoBilis salenvac T (the broadest spectrum salmonella vaccine available) with services that ensure effective, timely intervention. These include the Pin-Point monitoring Program for poultry operations, helping producers identify critical food safety hazard points.

as well as food safety we’ve also developed platforms for intestinal health, respiratory Protection and Dynamic immunity.

Good intestinal health is vital for birds to convert their feed properly, and gain sufficient weight. our intestinal health Platform is made up of market-leading vaccines like cocciVac and ParacoX – offering protection against coccidiosis and necrotic enteritis.

The iNNoVaX range is the cornerstone of our respiratory Protection Platform. it includes live virus vector vaccines, offering protection against marek’s disease, Newcastle disease (ND) and infectious laryngotracheitis (ilT).

our ProTEcToTYPE approach to vaccination is a uniquely effective way to tackle respiratory infections like bronchitis. combining live vaccines such as NoBilis iB ma5, iB 4/91 and inactivated ones like NoBilis iB multi, gives optimal protection against the strain range. The vaccination schedule is tailored to local requirements, epidemiological situation and the type of production.

strong pillars of our Dynamic immunity Platform are our live infectious bursal disease virus (iBDV) vaccines, protecting birds against Gumboro disease. NoBilis D78 and NoBilis 228E live vaccines set the standard for iBD protection around the world.

aquaTIC aNImalS

Demand for fish protein is rising. farmed fish is becoming more important to meet this demand and protect wild fish. currently half of all fish consumed globally is farmed. at merck animal health we must help forge a sustainable, environmentally conscious future for this aquaculture.

Protecting fish from disease, and controlling bacteria and parasites is vital to ensure consistent, sustainable harvests. all our vaccines aid stock replenishment by allowing fish to better convert feed, grow bigger and stay healthy.

our major lines of vaccines, NorVaX and aQUaVac, have been developed to fight a huge range of infectious diseases in salmon, trout, sea bass, bream, tilapia and many others.

The re-emergence of pancreatic disease (PD) in salmon has also created a vital role for products like NorVaX compact PD. aQUaVac iPN is our innovative oral vaccine for control of infectious pancreatic necrosis (iPN).

Bacterial diseases can also be controlled through the in-feed antibiotic aQUaflor (florfenicol).

merck animal health is one of the few companies with the manufacturing capabilities to help veterinarians meet this rapid rise in demand for pet healthcare products.

our vaccine portfolio for dogs and cats is led by the NoBiVac range. The canine parvo virus (cPV) strain c154 in our NoBiVac DhPPi dog vaccine means it is the first low-passage/high titer vaccine that can break through maternally-derived antibodies against cPV effectively.

in response to a call from the american Veterinary medical association (aVma), we have also developed the first vaccine against canine influenza, NoBiVac canine flu h3N8.

cats are protected against feline panleukopenia virus, feline herpes virus and feline calicvirus by NoBiVac Tricat Trio. similarly, NoViBac myxo-rhD is a live chimera rabbit vaccine that protects against myxomatosis and rabbit hemorrhagic disease (rhD) with a single injection.

as more people keep pets, it’s important we do more to control the spread of parasites in the home. along with PaNacUr/safE-GUarD (fenbendazole) and TrihEarT PlUs (ivermectin plus pyrantel), a canine heartworm preventative, the scaliBor Protector Band (deltamethrin) protects dogs against leishmaniasis. leishmaniasis is one of the world’s most deadly parasitic diseases and is linked to 60,000 human deaths annually.

as our bond with our pets becomes stronger, we want to make sure treatments are as gentle on them as they are effective. acTiVYl (indoxacarb) and acTiVYl TickPlus (indoxacarb plus permethrin) are new and unique flea products that use ‘bioactivation’. acTiVYl minimizes pet exposure to chemicals, because it only becomes active inside the flea.

We know too that pets are now living longer. our portfolio has grown to match them. caNiNsUliN (porcine insulin zinc suspension) helps dogs and cats with diabetes mellitus, and ViDalTa (carbimazole) is our prolonged-release tablet for easy oral treatment of feline hyperthyroidism.

HorSES

Breeding and caring for horses is a complex and often expensive business. To maximize the value of their stock and the wellbeing of their animals, our customers need the best equine healthcare.

in response, merck animal health has grown to become market leader in equine vaccines, protecting horses against both established and newly emerging diseases.

Equine influenza continues to be the most common viral respiratory disease found in horses. one of the most effective treatments is merck animal health’s EQUilis Prequenza vaccine. it provides active, annual immunization against equine influenza and tetanus.

strangles remains a common and deadly equine disease, caused by the Streptococcus equi bacteria. EQUilis strepE helps veterinarians dramatically reduce clinical signs and prevent lymph node abscessation.

as well as our vaccines, we help keep horses healthy with a range of leading pharmaceuticals. The anti-infective coBacTaN (cefquinome) is licensed for the treatment of foal septicemia and equine respiratory disease and can be administered intravenously or intramuscularly.

managing colic is a common concern for all horse breeders and owners. Prescribing DolorEX (butorphanol), an analgesic, helps veterinarians both relieve pain and sedate the horse.

more meat and dairy in our diets increases pressure on producers to keep breeding levels high and predictable. merck animal health’s fertility programs for production animals have several integral elements:

• Hormonesthatsynchronizereproductioncycles

• Productsthatfacilitateinseminationandoptimizebreeding strategies like embryo transfer

• Vaccinesthatprotectagainstinfectionsthataffectfertility and could pose a threat to human health

• Toolsthathelpdiagnoseandtreatuterineinfections in cattle

for cattle, our hormone portfolio includes rEcEPTal (buserelin), and EsTrUmaTE (cloprostenol). for swine, PG 600 (combination of gonadotropins) promotes a more fertile estrous cycle, and rEGUmaTE (altrenogest), is an oral treatment used in large farms to optimize the breeding process.

our hormones are administered in parallel with vaccinations against diseases that damage reproduction. BoVilis BVD for example, successfully protects cattle from abortions caused by bovine viral diarrhea virus. similarly, oVilis Toxovax and oVilis Enzovax can prevent abortions caused by toxoplasmosis and chlamydophilosis in sheep and goats.

To reduce the movement of animals between farms, and the spread of undetected disease, artificial insemination is important to producers. merck animal health also helps them build a stronger genetic pool with tools for more efficient artificial insemination.

managing reproduction in horses is a complex process that requires expert knowledge. our fertility products help professional stud farms and private individuals optimize their breeding programs.

Fighting rabies Today, rabies can be controlled through immunization. Which is why we believe every country in the world should be free of this fatal disease. Each year merck animal health donates over 200,000 doses of rabies vaccine to the afya serengeti Project. By tackling rabies in Tanzania’s domestic dog population, we’ve helped dramatically reduce dog bites, and helped protect the country’s fragile wild dog population. in india we sponsor two similar pilot projects in the villages surrounding Bangalore and Pune.

Milk for Malawi Through our partnership with the shire highlands milk Producers association (shmPa), merck animal health lends financial and in-kind support to malawian dairy smallholders. By providing funds, equipment and medicines we’re helping farmers improve the quantity and quality of milk supplies.

Homing Horses in recent years, the Us has seen an increase in its number of unwanted horses. With no national fund in place, merck animal health and the american association of Equine Practitioners (aaEP) have created the Unwanted horse Veterinary relief campaign. We donate thousands of doses of vaccines to rescue homes – helping them look after as many animals as possible.

Reducing Animals in Research To develop life-saving medicines we believe laboratory animal research remains indispensable. But we are dedicated to approaches that reduce the use of animals in science. We award the Dieter lütticken award to researchers who have discovered ways to replace animal testing.
