Allan Curling Club, under the guidance and ever-watchful eye of Arlene Pederson, was the host site for the 2013 CVAC senior curl-ing championships. It was two days of friendliness, fun curling, good shot making, and sportsmanship displayed by all teams.

In the girls category, our most competitive grouping, Delisle captured the CVAC championship, but, due to prior commitments, were unable to attend regionals. Following very competitive play, Martensville advanced as CVAC’s ‘A’ qualifier with Clavet ad-vancing as our ‘B’ qualifier. In the boys category, Rosthern, in their shirts and ties, advanced to regionals as CVAC’s ‘A’ qualifier with Blaine Lake as our ‘B’ qualifier. In the mixed category, CVAC’s ‘A’ qualifier came from Perdue, home of natural ice curling, while our ‘B’ qualifier came from Colonsay.

At regional playoffs in Prince Albert, our teams made an excellent showing amongst strong competition, but were unable to ad-vance to the provincial finals.

CVAC looks forward to hosting regional curling in Delisle, Waldheim, and (hopefully) Langham next spring, and the provincial cham-pionships in Hanley (girls), Colonsay (boys), and Martensville (mixed). Expect to see coaching clinics offered in August and Decem-ber next year.

Thanks again, Arlene, for coordinating our 2013 senior curling playoffs!

Junior Basketball On Saturday, February 9, Walter W. Brown School in Langham played host to the 2013 CVAC Junior Basketball Finals.

In the girls’ semifinals, the top seeded teams advanced to the finals via different routes. Warman Wolverines defeated the Lang-ham Vikings 61-38, pulling ahead early and never giving up the lead. On the other hand, although the Delisle Rebels took an early lead over the VCA Lions, VCA fought back to within 4 points before Delisle went on a third quarter run from which VCA could not recover, to win 67-48. In the final, Warman held only a 2 point lead after the first quarter, but they then went on an 18-0 run in the second quarter, a lead Delisle couldn’t overcome, losing 61-38. This was the Warman Wolverines third consecutive championship, a great accomplish-ment for Coach Fast and his team.

On the boys’ side, the Clavet Cougars and Lang-ham Vikings played a relatively close wild card game, the score tied with three minutes to go, until Clavet pulled ahead to win 69-57. In the first semi-final, the VCA Lions defeated the Dal-meny Cougars 58-55 in a back-to-back battle to the last minute. In the second semi-final, War-man Wolverines defeated the Clavet Cougars, overcoming a 14 point deficit at half time to win 66-54. In the final, Warman established an early lead, led by 2 points at half time, and expanded the lead over the last two quarters, winning 66-54. Congratulations to Coach Guy Farquharson and his team on their championship run.

Thank you to Michael Neufeld and the WW Brown staff for all their work in hosting the championships!

Junior Curling On March 1 and 2, Aberdeen and Allan Curling Clubs hosted the 2013 CVAC junior curling playoffs. Shelley Lang and Arlene Peder-son did an excellent job of keeping the students busy on, and well fed off, the ice. The sportsmanship was outstanding!

After two days of competition, Colonsay emerged as the boys’ champion for the second consecutive year. Due to the high number of entries, the girls and mixed winners from the two sites met the following week for the championship. On the girls’ side, the game came down to the last rock in the final end, with Colonsay defeating Osler. In the mixed final, very strong team play led Delisle to victory over Rosthern.

Thank you, Shelley and Arlene, for your support of the CVAC junior curling program!
