From the Basileus

Greetings KIZ Sorors,

I hope you had a wonderful summer break. It has been a busy summer for Kappa Iota Zeta.

In early July, we continued to work on our strategic alliance with the City of East Point, by volunteering at their July 4th extravaganza. Also in July, I, along with 3 other KIZ sorors, had the opportunity to attend the Zeta Organizational Leadership conference in Washington, DC.

Conclave 2011 was held right here in Atlanta, and many of you volunteered for various events in support of our brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. From registration to the opening ceremony; the hospitality room to the Orchid Ball, KIZ was in place, lending a helping hand and a warm heart to our visiting brothers. Several sorors attended the “Zeta History Lesson” presented by National First Anti-Basileus Soror Mary Wright. It was quite an honor and a pleasure to learn about the history of our beloved organization and to hear tidbits you won’t find in the history books.

This 2011 - 2012 sorority year promises to be an exciting year in KIZ and in Zeta. During this year, I would like us all to focus on membership, particularly retention and reclamation. Reach out to a soror that you have not seen or heard from in a while. Send her a quick note to let her know you are thinking of her and would love to see her at a

chapter meeting or KIZ event.

It has truly been my pleasure to serve as your leader. As I start my final year as Chapter Basileus, I am humbled by the faith and trust you have extended to me to lead this great chapter and by your support, encouragement and love as we work together to uphold the great legacies of KIZ and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. I look forward to a productive sorority year.

Yours in service and sisterhood,

VickiSoror Vicki Pearson

If you did not attend this year’s retreat, you missed what is being considered one of the chapter’s best retreats! On August 20, 2011, KIZ held their annual chapter retreat with 59 participants. Anything but normal, KIZ traveled to Chateau Élan for a wonderful lunch buffet, wine tasting and tour.

The day began start at the Sigma Zeta Foundation with a beautiful continental breakfast and an hour-long meeting. We then boarded a charter bus to our destination, but not before a “get low” limbo onto the bus. This was a great way to loosen everyone up for the hour-long road trip. Once on board, all were welcomed with a gift and the games, giveaways, dancing commenced. There was even time to learn KIZ history!

The afternoon was spent with wine, food and fellowship. Before it was over, we had tasted 5 of Chateau Elan’s favorite wines and even got to keep the wine glasses as a souvenir. The parting gift to everyone that participated was a small bottle of wine, chocolates, and a recipe card for our own KIZ Peach Sangria.

Special thanks to Soror LaNise Ollarvia, Retreat chairperson and her “awesome” committee for hosting such a memorable event.

Civil rights activist, Deedee Wright, reactivates with Kappa Iota Zeta. Among the 13 Sorors reactivating with Kappa Iota Zeta Chapter this year under the leadership of 1st Vice President, Rebecca Jackson, is the infamous Doris “DeeDee” Wright. Still a force in the community, during the same month of reactivation, Soror Wright was the recipient of the Elizabeth Duncan Koontz Humanitarian Award in Salisbury – Rowan County, North Carolina. Elizabeth D. Koontz, also a famous Zeta, was the first Black president of the National Educators Association (NEA) and former director of the U.S. Dept. of Labors Women’s Bureau (the highest ranking black woman during the Nixon Administration). Coincidentally, Wright was the Goddaughter of Koontz. Soror Wright was also a previous recipient of the Legend Award from Project Push based on the community service she gave along side the Rev. Jesse Jackson, during her work with the “Greenville 8” of Greenville, SC.

Sorority Supports March of Dimes Efforts to Save Babies from Premature Birth

Atlanta, GA, -- The weekends of November 5th & 6th and 12th & 13th, worshipers will learn about an infant health crisis that nearly half a million families cope with each year, premature birth, thanks to Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Members of the Sorority will join congregational leaders in sending a message of hope for premature babies and their families.

Premature birth is the number one killer of newborns. In the last 20 years, the problem has become worse. Premature birth affects one in every eight babies in America. The rate is even higher among African-Americans for whom one baby in every six is affected. It’s a major cause of serious health problems and costs society billions of dollars every year.

That’s why the March of Dimes is leading a national effort to save babies from premature birth by funding research to find the causes and by supporting local programs that offer hope and help to families with a baby in intensive care. As part of that effort, November is designated as Prematurity Awareness Month to remind us that premature birth is a crisis and to bring people together to help give all babies their nine months.

As a leading March of Dimes ―community partner‖, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., was among the first organizations to raise awareness about the consequences of premature birth. They held their first Prematurity Awareness Sunday in 2003 and participation has been growing ever since. This year they’ll be sharing information about the problem, about how women can reduce their risks, and about how to support this effort, from wearing pink and blue to sending letters and raising funds. Resources are available by visiting marchofdimes.com during November, Prematurity Awareness Month, or any time.

The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, community services, education, and advocacy to save babies and in 2003 launched a campaign to address the increasing rate of premature birth. For more information, visit the March of Dimes Web site at marchofdimes.com or its Spanish language Web site at nacersano.org.

Q. Pearl, everyone is buzzing about this year being a Boule year.  What's the big deal?  It's not like I actually get a vote if I'm not a life member.  Why should I care about attending Boule?  What can one person do that will actually matter?

A. The Boulé is the meeting of the international body and it always brings about a buzz.  The excitement we share in our monthly chapter meetings is multiplied for the Boulé which is only held bi-annually.

Some of the reasons you should be at Boule:

Sisterly bonding  Boule gives you the opportunity to form relationships with sorors outside your immediate area. You get to finally meet in person with those sorors you have emailing and talking to on the phone. Honestly, this can be good or bad, but Ms. Pearl can’t tell ya everything she knows.  Some things you have to figure for yourself, but then again, maybe you already know of the bitter-sweetness of REAL sisterhood.

Focus on International programsIt is here the international programs are shared.  Our eyes are opened as we realize that our local chapter is an extension of the international body.  It isn’t about personal desires, but about the implementation of goals that we, the international body, have decided to move forth.

This helps Zetas become one voice with a mission.  After many Boulés, one may even realize that each of us individually is responsible for direction of the international body. We may realize our individual part in the accountability of Zeta as a whole.  Sometimes it takes us a few decades to realize, it’s not about us; it’s about the sorority.  But it’s ok, we’ve got time.

Emphasis on the business of ZetaSometimes we forget Zeta is a business. Boule is a reminder that we are an international non-profit corporation and we have to handle the business responsibilities that come with that. Your first Boulé? You won’t know what hit you!  Just hold on and smile a lot.  But ole Pearl will give you this tip for free.  The portion of the iceberg that you “see” is only the tip.  The vast portion lies beneath the ocean. Please know, you’ll be like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, because truly, when comparing Boulé to the regular chapter meeting, you’ll realize that you “aren’t in Kansas anymore!’ Consider buddying up with a seasoned KIZ, Boule-attending soror who can show you the ropes.

Now, if the sisterly love, programmatic thrusts, and business don’t hook you, here is the coup de grâce!  It’s VACATION TIME! This is the time to explore a new city with your Sorors!

Your Commitment to ZetaBut as much as it is about the collective body, it is also about you as an individual soror.  It’s about evaluating your own commitment to Zeta through sacrificing your time and finances to go to this national conference of women every time two years.

If you ever wonder if your presence can make a difference, think of one flame in a room of darkness.  Even if a room is well lit, your light still adds to the intensity of the brightness that already exists.  We could all be like KIZ charter member Thelma Lester, who has committed to never missing a Boule.  Our national meeting is not only about the collective body, it is also about you as an individual soror.  It's about evaluating your own commitment to Zeta through sacrificing your time and finances to go to this national conference.  Through it all, you come back home still ready to be the best Zeta you can be.  Remember, this great sorority is "yours by choice!"
