Aim4Peace (Aim for Peace) is a public health approach to reduce shootings and homicides Aim4Peace uses highly-trained violence interrupters and outreach staff public education campaigns Neighborhood Action Teams and community mobilization to reverse the violence epidemic in Kansas City Missouri

Aim4Peace focuses on the neighborhood factors that most often contribute to violence helping those who are considered at highest risk of committing offenses due to their living or employment situation

Raymore Chief of Police Jan Zimmerman began her career in law enforcement in 1979 as a dispatcher with the Kansas City Missouri Police Department She attended the Police Academy at Kansas City and was sworn in as a

Police Officer in 1982 She rose through the ranks in Kansas City ultimately being promoted to Major which was her rank when she retired to accept the Chiefrsquos position in Raymore in 2012 During her career she held assignments in Patrol the Chiefrsquos Office Human Resources Narcotics and Vice Financial Services Information Technology and the Training Academy Chief Zimmerman holds a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Park University She is a proud alumnus of both the FBI National Academy in Quantico and the Southern Police Institute at the Uni-versity of Louisville

Established in 2009 it is the mission of the Reentry and Resources work group to identify resources for people with a criminal background enhance efforts to ensure successful reentry reduce recidivism and enhance public safety This work group achieves these goals through collaborative partnerships with government agencies faith-based organizations career centers and all other stakeholders In 2015 Reentry amp Resources became a local non-profit that provides referrals for service and financial assistance to returning citizens and those who are on probation Our group also conducts activities trainings and presentations to raise awareness in our communities in hopes of decreasing the stigma associated with criminal backgrounds Our group aids in lowering the unemploy-ment rate of citizens negatively impacted by a felony background Our services improve our community by improving a returning citizenrsquos opportunities for success Reentry amp Resources is operated by volunteers from our communities

Ninety-five percent of the over 15 million incarcerated individuals in the United States will eventually be released back into the community (West amp Sabol 2009 ACA 2013) Of those approximately 65 will reoffend and return to prison within 3 years of release (BOP 2013) Communities all across the country are affected as a victim a tax-payer a family member or a community resource While offenders are released to diverse communities with differing levels of support and intrinsic motivation experience suggests that they share many of the same challenges This Reentry Simulation will illustrate the journey to self-sufficiency and the barriers that may contribute to feelings of helplessness and decreased self-efficacy Participants will assume the identity of an ex-offender and perform tasks in four 15 minute sessions with each session representing a week By the end of this workshop participants will have simulated a month in the life of someone who has released from prison Participants will encounter the same challenges faced by many ex-offenders as they try to complete their court ordered obligations as well as maintain their day to day life This simula-tion suggests that ultimately the ability to navigate ldquothe systemrdquo may be a primary factor in the relationship between resiliency and recidivism

While pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice at University of Maryland Eastern Shore Ms Butler was an active mem-ber of the Alpha Phi Sigmarsquos Gamma Omicron Chapter She served as chapter Vice President and President and was

very involved in chapter activities During her junior year Ms Butler interned with the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science as Security Specialist She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 2004 graduating Summa Cum Laude and

was offered a full time position with DOE in Germantown MD She earned a Master of Science Degree in Administration of Jus-tice at Wilmington College Wilmington DE graduating in 2006 Magna Cum Laude In 2010 Ms Butler gained a federal position

with DHS as a GS-12 and a year later was promoted to a GS-13 As a Field Security Coordinator providing support and oversight to partners within the State Local Tribal and Private Sector Program

NSUrsquos Online Criminal Justice Program Named one of the Nationrsquos Best for Veterans

Once again Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has been recognized for providing students with one of the na-tionrsquos top online academic programs US News amp World Report has released its rankings of top online graduate programs for veterans and NSUrsquos Criminal Justice program was ranked in a tie for 21st

Wreaths Across America In December 2016 Kappa Kappa members showed their support to Americarsquos Veterans by participating in Wreathrsquos Across Ameri-ca Below are a few photographs of our members in action


Member Spotlight This quarterrsquos member spotlight is our very own Amber Causey Amber recently completed her capstone course for her Masters degree in Criminal Justice Her thesis was geared towards expanding the knowledge in the fields of human trafficking and prostitu-tion This is a very significant accomplishment for her as she was a victim of sex trafficking as a minor Amber was someone who dropped out of high school was homeless and abused in so many different ways She was told over and over again she would never amount to anything in life She prayed that if she got out of that situation she would somehow reach back and help other victims to become survivors Here she is now living her dreams and this is only the beginning Amber did this all while being a single parent with two children one of which she carried and delivered in the middle of her Masterrsquos program Amber is also writing a book about her life story and battle with PTSD and depression because of the things she has experienced She would love to share her story with others to provide encouragement that anything is possible and to never give up on your dreams and goals

APS members partnered with an organization that hands out sleeping bags blankets water and other necessities to San Joses homeless every other Saturday
