The Roundabout Project
2017: Team 09
Existing layout of the SW side of campus Proposed layout of the SW side of campus
• Construct a single-lane roundabout for the intersection of the entrance drive from Burton and Knollcrest Circle Drive. The proposed roundabout will:• Handle traffic more efficiently• Reduce pedestrian conflicts• Reduce confusion and unwelcoming impression to visitors
• Construct Knollcrest Circle Drive to the outside (west) of the parking lot. This includes:• Removing the need for pedestrians to cross traffic after parking • Relocating parking spots to account for the new route of the road• Rearranging visitor parking lot to incorporate a new landscaped area and add parking• Designing a proposed rain garden that will reduce the rain water runoff
Solution
In 2016, Calvin College released a master plan of the college’s campus, and one aspect of the master plan is vehicular circulation improvements. This project consists of two main components highlighted in the master plan:• Redesign the intersection where the entrance drive from Burton Street meets Knollcrest
Circle Drive• Relocate the southwestern portion of Knollcrest Circle Drive
Project Description
