THE ROTARY CLUB OF SANTA MARIA
Make Dreams Real
President’s Message
Dr. Kenneth Nelson2008-2009 President
June 23, 2009
THE ROTATOR
Frank Culley, Editor
It's not too early to plan to attend the District 5240 Conference in October! For those of you whomight not know, our District holds two kinds of events every year: the District Assemblies in April aretraining seminars, whereas the District Conferences in October are a time for fellowship, inspiration, socializing and FUN. I'm planning to go and hope lots of our members and spouses will be able tocome too.
This year, there are lots of really cool activities and entertainment planned, it's being held at thebeach at the Ventura Mariott. How can you say no to playing Texas Hold'em or building sand castleson the beach all for the Rotary cause??? (Carlie can actually be telling the truth about doing good forRotary if he goes.) The speakers and entertainment are excellent. There are limited spaces avail-able, so submit your reservations soon. See the attached fliers.
Sincerely,
Susan
A Message from our President Elect
Susan Rees
We must also remember our good friend, Hillary Clinton
Word is she is having elbow surgery
Have a speedy recovery Hillary
Congratulations to:
Frank Ortiz (Santa Maria Breakfast) on being named one of two District Rotarian ofthe Year Award recipients. In addition to his family and club responsibilities, he tookon two additional monster chores this last year – District Conference Chair last Octo-ber and Chair of the Foundation Gala just last month. Nobody has ever workedharder to get the superior results Frank achieved.
CENTURY CLUB:Members know that during the year, they will be fined approximately $100 for club operations. It’s fun to get up in front of your friends and share your experiences in exchange for good-natured ribbing and a fine. But some members prefer not to be the center of attention, and ifyou're one of them, what a deal we have for you! Become a member of the Century Club bypaying $100 to Robbin by August 25, 2009. You will not be singled out at meetings, and if youmistakenly are, any fine assessed will have to be paid by the president! Note that birthdaysand anniversaries are excluded, and will still be recognized at meetings. Talk to Robbin now ifyou want to take advantage of this limited time offer.
What does this have todo with anything Rotary?
Well stay tuned and youwill find out!
Hey Fellow Rotarians

Dear Friends:
I was saddened to see news of Maureen Withers passing in the SM Times today.
For those that didn’t know her, Maureen was a charming, warm, hardworking person and verygenerous with her time. She also was a great friend to my mother-in-law as the Director at the
Oasis Center.
It is too bad that we didn’t do a better job of recognizing all her efforts while she was with us.

Saturday June 6 was a gorgeous sunny day – perfect for the 66th annual Elks’ Rodeo Parade.
Bobby Aquistapace was ubiquitous – greeting at the Sponsors’ VIP viewing area, helping along the parade route, andof course organizing the whole deal. John and Sharon Henning's Country Oaks float spanned the 40's through 60'sdecades. And no parade would be complete without Judy and Hardy Hearn, decked out in their glittery best westernattire. Alice Patino was spotted too. Special thanks to Fred Pratt for again loaning his classic (cranky?) 1925 Duesen-berg that transported Susan Rees and Bob Frias in style. Susan thanks her husband Robert for driving while Fredwas off playing with his "geezerball" pals.

Rotarian) and participants (non Rotarians) for the proposed trip taking place early next year.

THE MUSIC MAN
In this family musical celebration of Midwestern American traditions and foibles, con man 'Professor' Harold Hill has a plan for cleaning up the poolhalls in River City by replacing them with a wholesome marching band; or so he wants us to believe. He came to River City to "clean up" but he
didn't count on falling in love. Come and enjoy this classic American musical from Meredith Wilson
PCPA, Friday July 31st, $25.00 appropriate for all ages. Bring checks to Rotary meeting, payable to PCPA
