George’s Gossip

Neville has been so desperate for the Newsletter cover that he had to come to me. It’s 2016 all over again. So to all my fans who missed me... It’s all change with Ferndown Club, about to become Ferndown and Parley Club. The new name has been approved by District and at the time of writing is with RIBI. We are all looking forward to joining with seven members from Parley, in addition to Mike and Mac who joined us a few weeks ago. Charter night and partners’ night allowed us to celebrate happy birthday to the Club and entertain our better halves this month. Meanwhile we are getting ready for another great Golf Day, followed by a fantastic Fete on the Field. I’ll try to bring back the weather from Greece. Many thanks to IPP Richard and VP Keith, who have been tak-ing care of business while President Charlie and PE Maddy have been on holiday. Les was looking distinctly worried that he would have to take over at one stage, a couple of years early. Here’s a picture of what you are missing. George

Stroke Awareness We had a very successful morning inside and outside the Barrington today, our crack medical team carried out 59 tests and a number of people were referred to their Doctor following their con-sultation. We also met a couple who took advantage of the service last year and following advice for a fol-low up meeting with the wife's Doctor it was found that she had Angina which is now being treat-ed and under control. They were full of praise to the club for holding this event. We met up with past members Howard and June who were collecting for Waggy tails and also Chris Loring all of whom were interested in news about the club in particular the move to Duds-bury. Special thanks to Mac who helped out with the tests and Maddie & George who stopped off to help on the start of a long journey for their holiday. Thanks to all who took part - Lizzy, Gordon & Mac as the experts Richard, Jan, Bill Field and Maddie the administrators Fiona, Charlie, Keith, George and Derek for setting up, taking down and dragging people in. Regards Jim.

A Very Successful Year The Rotary year 2018—2019 was a very successful year for Ferndown Rotary, a considera-ble amount of money was raised for various Charities, each Committee Chairperson gave a report on all activities undertaken by their Committees. Our move from Cobhams Sports & Social Club to Dudsbury Golf Club went quite well and everyone seems to enjoy the new Venue but time will tell.

Gerry’s Guide to living a Happier life:-

It’s not all about money. Time is what affects your happiness. My big discovery: the cost you pay to earn

extra money outweighs the enjoyment you get from it.

Relationships are very important. Friends and family are a big cause of happiness. So, if there is not

enough time for all of your friends, so do a friend’s audit.

We tend to go for short-term happiness rather than long-term, and we go for enjoy rather than achieve,

especially if achievement requires doing something right now which we don’t feel like doing. So the

answer is to have some projects where you feel you’re making progress and can probably enjoy and

achieve at home or at work.

Find a job or career you enjoy or alternatively find a way to enjoy your job. This could mean moving on

or it could mean changing your job activity towards the way you want it to be.

Unless you are a professional footballer, mastery is a path to nowhere. Obsession takes too much time.

It’s better to dabble in more things and then you’ll harvest more happiness.

Life/work balance is important and the balance between living in the present and preparing for the future

is key. Living in the present is harder than it sounds. Take responsibility for your life! Review your life.

Do a Happiness audit. What are the main sources of happiness and how can you get more of them into

your daily routine? Keep in touch with Nature. Take a walk along the beach, through the countryside,

breathe in the forest air, enjoy some gardening etc They can all increase your happiness.

Get a pet! Dogs and pets can also make people happy, particularly if you live alone. Help others – either

with your time, by teaching others something beneficial or through your generosity. Consider joining a

Club, Society or Association with a strong feeling of teamwork.

Declutter. How you feel about surroundings makes a difference to your happiness, and clutter adds stress.

It feels good to have a clear-out once in a while. Sleep - It’s a basic requirement to being happy and yet

many people go through their lives feeling tired. Make sure you are getting the quantity and quality of

sleep you need. The physical side of happiness – chocolate, the occasional glass of wine, warm sunshine.

Look to see how can we get more physical generators of happiness into our lives.

Happiness comes from coming out of one’s comfort zone, succeeding with a challenge. So it’s important

to find a way to push yourself out of your comfort zone occasionally. Sport and Exercise. Get involved

with some physical activity. Sport and exercise can reduce your stress and make you feel better after-

wards and help make your brain work better. Get Creative! Try drawing, sculpting, poetry, craftwork,

playing a musical instrument. Get in the flow, concentrating on the creative processes and live com-

pletely in the present. Get rid of anger. What stories are you telling yourself? Negative emotions have a

perceived pay off which cause you to choose them but which are in fact often completely false. Get orga-

nized. Overcome procrastination. Learn to manage your time. Spend more time on important things and

less time on the unimportant. Learn to say no! Get a boat!

These are just some of the things that I discovered we can do to enjoy a happier life. If you would like

District Darts Semi Final After all the euphoria of the football Champions league semi finals and the climax to the Premier League – Could there be any more tense and exciting Sporting Finishes awaiting us ? Yes there certainly could The Rotary District Darts Semi Final between Ferndown and Fare-ham Meon Although weary after the long journey to Botley the Ferndown Dream Team of Les,MikeFenner,Chris,Charlie,Neville and Peter got down to serious Warm Up Practice. However after two practice throws Neville declared himself unfit to continue. Disaster - Keith was the only substitute available. Not a viable option. It took a lager shandy and some serious Sports Psychology chat from Keith for Neville to agree to go through the Pain Barrier and play on. And what Drama unfolded After good performances from all the team, the last Singles Match was to decide the winners and District finalists It was Neville who had to step up and “shoulder” the weight of trying to win it for Ferndown. Who else could have finished with a fantastic single 2 double 3 to win it. What a thrilling finish and a great night of fellowship Now the hard graft of training for The Final begins

Bob Jones, Neville Platt and Past President Tony Perrella all met at Julian Daniel’s to celebrate Jenny ‘s 80th Birthday. We were all treated to a wonderful “ brunch” Bucks Fizz and Champagne . A great day, Tony send his best wishes to all his Rotary friends

My Favourite Clips from You Tube With a little bit of help from Peter David, Bill Field finally managed to show the Club some of his favourite clips from You Tube , he started at about 18.56pm and finally got it working about 19.56pm, still it was worth the wait.

District 1110 Shoebox Scheme Introduced by Mike Sismey International Chairman Chris Hardiman of the Sturminster Newton Rotary Club gave the Club the insight of the Shoebox scheme, last year over 26.00 boxes were raised by the 45 Clubs from District 1110. These boxes are for disadvantaged children in Albania, Montenegro, Moldovia and Romania. And a new destination is the Phillipines . It is also hoped to send two children to Albania to see the boxes distributed to the Children there. The Scheme is looking for volunteers to check and pack boxes ready for shipping. Dates are 6th and 7th , 8th and 9th and 16th and 17th November

Charter Night at Dudsbury Golf Club Our first Charter Night at Dudsbury went off without a hitch, our two latest members Mike and Mac read the Objects of Rotary and Our Charter. An excellent meal was enjoyed by all. Peter David gave a report on the performance of our Darts Team who beat the Rotary Club of Fareham and got us into the Final of the District Competition this surprised the Club but not as much as it did the team specially Neville who threw the winning dart. This was followed with a Talk by Flying Officer Kite on his days in the Royal Airforce, followed by Wing Com-mander Chris Marshal who told how much it took to fly these magnificent machines. He upset Neil Meldrum when he showed a video of blowing up a couple of Army Tanks, he was after all a Tank Commander.

Can anyone help Mike Fenner

Just who am I? I used to think I was just a regular person, but I was born white, which now, whether I like it or not, makes me a racist. I am a fiscal and moral conservative, which by today's standards, makes me a fascist. I am heterosexual, which now makes me a homophobe. I am mostly non-union, which makes me a traitor to the working class and an ally of big business. I was christened which now labels me as an infidel. I am retired, which makes me useless. I think, and I reason, therefore I doubt much that the mainstream media tells me, which must make me a reactionary. I am proud of my heritage, which makes me a xenophobe. I value my safety and that of my family and I appreciate the police and the legal system, which makes me a right-wing extremist. I believe in hard work, fair play, and fair compensation according to each indi-vidual's merits, which today makes me an anti-socialist. I acquired a fair education without student loan debts and little or no debt, which makes me some kind of an odd underachiever. I believe in the defence and protection of my country and I honour those who served in the Armed Forces, which now makes me a right wing-militant. Please help me come to terms with the new me... because I'm just not sure who I am anymore! As if all this nonsense wasn’t enough to deal with.. Now I’m not even sure which toilet to go into!

The Object of Rotary The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and fos-ter: 1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. 2. High ethical standards in business and professions, and the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society. 3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life. 4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “Four-Way Test” First: Is it the truth Second: Is it fair to all Concerned? Third: Will it build goodwill and better friendships Fourth: Will it be beneficial to all concerned
