What we do in the Rotary Club of Doncaster is make everyone in our club feel welcome and important, and make our meetings enjoyable. Members start gathering up to an hour before our club meeting to socialise, and new and visiting members are swept into the constantly moving and changing conversational groups that form during this time. One of our club’s strengths is that we make everyone feel a part of the group and no one finds themselves standing alone with no one to talk to. New members are invited to give an introduction speech to the club, which often leads to further connections with each other and involvement in new projects. For example, when a new member told us about his involvement with supporting AIDS orphans, there was immediate consensus among our members that we should all become involved in the project. Our club works quite hard for all the money it raises for new and existing projects. Our club’s international service team organised an African themed night to launch the club’s involvement. The event featured a special menu, some Zimbabwean themed games, and some African items that were for sale. Members helped out and invited guests to join the fun and open their wallets! Our club’s vibrancy comes from more than good planning and organisation. The members have created a positive and welcoming atmosphere. Their generosity of spirit is evidenced in their approach to Rotary, Rotary projects, and their fellow Rotarians. Everyone enjoys coming to the meetings. Everyone has a designated job or position in the club. All members work well together to achieve the club’s goals, and we enjoy spending social time together. David Kwong introduced Guest Speaker Henry van Zanden

Henry's quest for the truth in a relatively unknown part of Australian History. It is common knowledge that Dirk Hartog landed on the West Coast of Australia in 1616 But Henry knew that in 1606 Dutch explorers had mapped the Western coast of Australia. His research led to the discovery of a lost white tribe originating from the Dutch shipwreck, the Gilt Dragon in 1656. The spice route to Indonesia was originally discovered by Spain and Portugal. The Dutch eventually found the way to Batavia ( now Jakarta ) and their subsequent arrival back in the Netherlands saved the country from bankruptcy due to the high value of the spices they brought back . Before Captain Cook arrived on the east coast, at least 64 ships had been wrecked on the West Coast due to the strong westerly winds forcing them into the cliffs. His research led him to a small article published on Jan 25th 1834 from an explorer, Lt. Dale coming across a white man on the West Coast in 1832, who claimed to be a descendant from survivors of a Dutch ship wreck 100 years earlier. Originall 76 and now numbering 300 descendants. He described his search for the location of the Lost White Tribe and how they arrived there and what eventually happened to them. He postulated that the discovery was hidden by the English to protect their interests in Australia. Henry eventually found the location of the settlement and showed us images of pots and other artefacts from their settlement, as well as aboriginal cave paintings depicting them. He found tools and hammers, scrapers and fish traps. He talked about another shipwreck from 1712 , the Zuytdorp. Of particular interest is the finding of an Aboriginal descendant of the White Tribe, originating from the Zuytdorp, verefied by DNA testing. His quest is to go back to the source of the artefacts to find the rest of this amazing treasure trove of history revealing an undeniable link between the shipwrecked Dutch sailors and Western Australian Aborigines. In answering the many questions he suspected that the floods of 1833 came and the tribe headed north to escape. Some perished, some settled near Geraldton and others spread into Aboriginal tribes. He is investigating and it will be a topic of a future book.

Thanks from pp John Kane

Raffle won by Pres Peter who donated it to Henry.

Meeting closed at 8:10 with the singing of Advance Australia Fair.
