Principal’s Report Dear Parent/Carer P&C Fundraiser Congratulations to the P&C for a fantastic fundraiser on Saturday Night. The food was wonderful and the conversations and community mingling was excellent. A huge thank you to the community members, particularly those who no longer have students at the school, for supporting our school and, in effect, the community as a whole. I would like to thank all the P&C members, led by President Rebecca Kingston, who ensured a great time was had by all. I would also like to thank the staff that helped out in organising and in attending on the evening. Well done to all involved, I thank you on behalf of the students. Beginning Teachers Program From 2014, all new teachers to our profession are entitled to extra professional development and learning, with the support of a mentor. Both Mrs Traci Driscoll and Ms Natalie Malsem, being new career teachers, will be on extra release, as of Week 4 this term and Mrs Jess Higginson will be their mentor teacher. Ms Hannah Terzi has been employed to cover these extra professional development and mentor hours each Wednesday. If these arrangements cause any concern, please see myself or Mrs Higginson. Sun Safe Awareness At the start of summer each year, we try and emphasis the need for sun safe measures required for all students. Sunscreen, t-shirt cover, sunglasses and hats are all identified as ways to reduce children’s exposure to the UV radiation that causes skin cancers. Primary and Infants students are very good with the sun safe message; however, as students get older it becomes a little more difficult. We would like to encourage all secondary students to wear appropriate hats, while they are in the sun and, if this can be supported at home that would be wonderful. Student Welfare Policy On Tuesday afternoon all teaching staff worked late on re-shaping our schools student welfare policy, under the heading of Student Wellbeing. Our policy is outdated and does not reflect the values, attitudes and needs of young people in today’s society. At the next two P&C meetings, I will also be asking for parents/carers input into the policy, so if you are interested in this consultation and collaboration process to help develop this policy, please attend the meeting tonight and in Week 7. What do we do well? Next week there will be an envelope attached to the newsletter. Inside this envelope will be a piece of paper. We would like you to write one thing you and your family think our school does well. The reason we are doing this is because surveys are often time consuming and not returned. If every few months we send out an envelope with one piece of information to collect, we are hoping to get a more representative view of opinions, as well as a greater number of responses from parents and carers to help improve the school and increase secondary numbers. Another big achievement This week we recognise another big achievement for our school. On page 3 is a fantastic story about Holly Durnan and her pony, Macbeth. Principal’s Report

Dear Parent/Carer

P&C Fundraiser

Congratulations to the P&C for a

fantastic fundraiser on Saturday Night.

The food was wonderful and the

conversations and community mingling

was excellent. A huge thank you to the

community members, particularly those

who no longer have students at the

school, for supporting our school and, in

effect, the community as a whole.

I would like to thank all the P&C

members, led by President Rebecca

Kingston, who ensured a great time was

had by all. I would also like to thank the

staff that helped out in organising and

in attending on the evening. Well done to

all involved, I thank you on behalf of the

students.

Beginning Teachers Program

From 2014, all new teachers to our

profession are entitled to extra

professional development and learning,

with the support of a mentor. Both

Mrs Traci Driscoll and Ms Natalie

Malsem, being new career teachers, will

be on extra release, as of Week 4 this

term and Mrs Jess Higginson will be

their mentor teacher. Ms Hannah Terzi

has been employed to cover these extra

professional development and mentor

hours each Wednesday. If these

arrangements cause any concern, please

see myself or Mrs Higginson.

Sun Safe Awareness

At the start of summer each year, we

try and emphasis the need for sun safe

measures required for all students.

Sunscreen, t-shirt cover, sunglasses and

hats are all identified as ways to reduce

children’s exposure to the UV radiation

that causes skin cancers. Primary and

Infants students are very good with the

sun safe message; however, as students

get older it becomes a little more

difficult.

We would like to encourage all

secondary students to wear appropriate

hats, while they are in the sun and, if

this can be supported at home that

would be wonderful.

Student Welfare Policy

On Tuesday afternoon all teaching staff

worked late on re-shaping our schools

student welfare policy, under the

heading of Student Wellbeing. Our

policy is outdated and does not reflect

the values, attitudes and needs of young

people in today’s society. At the next

two P&C meetings, I will also be asking

for parents/carers input into the policy,

so if you are interested in this

consultation and collaboration process to

help develop this policy, please attend

the meeting tonight and in Week 7.

What do we do well?

Next week there will be an envelope

attached to the newsletter. Inside this

envelope will be a piece of paper. We

would like you to write one thing you and

your family think our school does well.

The reason we are doing this is because

surveys are often time consuming and

not returned. If every few months we

send out an envelope with one piece of

information to collect, we are hoping to

get a more representative view of

opinions, as well as a greater number of

responses from parents and carers to

This week we recognise another big

achievement for our school. On page 3 is

DOB IN A DOER — HOLLY DURNAN

Last weekend, I went to the Tumbarumba Public School Equestrian

Interschool Championships with my pony Macbeth (pictured right).

I had a great time and won lots of first places during the day, such

as Year 3/4 rider and best Pair of Riders (I was teamed with a girl

from Forest Hill Public School). I also got a second place in Active

Rider (which is a versatility class). I was placed in the

bareback rider class and handler class. All of these placings led me

to win the overall Year 3/4 Age Rider Championship.

In the afternoon, I competed in the Stockman’s Challenge and got

6th and then I went into a lot of mounted games, including the

apple in the straw, barrel race, western bend, flag race, bending

race and keyhole race. I got first in all of these except for one.

This took me to the lead, which gave me the Year 3/4

Championship.

With all these wins, my points were all put together and I won the

‘Most Successful School of the Day’ for The Rock Central School,

which was a very big deal, as I competed against students in Kinder

to Year 12 who go to schools in Wagga, Tumbarumba, Tumut and St

Pauls, Walla Walla.

As you can see, I won a big

trophy and lots of ribbons. I will

put these with all my other

trophies and ribbons I have got

at home.

I am proud to report that the excursion to Sydney was a huge success and have nothing but praise for the way

our students behaved on the trip. Well done to those students who went out of their way to make the

Lockhart Central School students feel welcome. Many of you may be aware that the weather forecast for

Sydney looked rather gloomy, and yes it was quite wet and cold, however, we were fortunate with the timings

of the rainfall (yes I still have connections with Mother Nature!!) We were still able to do all our sightseeing

and complete all the activities on our itinerary. Thank you 4/5/6 students for such an enjoyable and

pleasurable trip! Amna Khan, Excursion Co-ordinator

Didn’t your mother tell you when you were little Mr

Kotzur, that if you pulled faces and the wind changed,

you would stay like that...

Last week, Year 4/5/6 went on an excursion to Sydney. We went to the Aquarium, walked over the Sydney Harbour Bridge

and went to Pizza Hut for dinner. Our accommodation was at the YHA at The Rocks.

On Tuesday morning we went to the Zoo and saw heaps of incredible animals as well as having educational talks on how

they look after the animals. For dinner that night we had fish and chips at Bondi Beach on the grass. On Wednesday we

went to the Opera House and Mrs Macquarie's Chair and then said ‘goodbye’ to Sydney.

We had a great time and would like to say ‘thank you’ to Miss Khan, Mr Kotzur & Mrs Adams for taking us and Allens

Coaches for driving us everywhere.

by Lucy Bennett & Sophie Bourne

* * * * *

On the first day, we got to school at 5.30am and left at 6am. We travelled with 10 other students from

Lockhart Central School. We stopped at Goulburn for morning tea and then drove on to Sydney. First, we went to the

Aquarium and had a look at some sea creatures, then we went for a walk over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. After that we

had all-you-can-eat pizza and then checked into our motel.

We woke up on day two and had breakfast. We then went on a ferry ride to Manly and we saw the bridge on the way to

Manly. After that, we went to Taronga Zoo – some parts were fun and some parts were boring. Once we finished at the

zoo, we went to Bondi Beach and had some yummy fish, chips and battered savs, then we climbed the Centre Point Tower.

On our last day, we went to the Opera House and then to the Botanical Gardens. When we left, we stopped at Goulburn

Maccas for lunch. We got back to The Rock at 5pm. It was really fun.
