What is the AIO?
The AIO and UKTI
The AIO is a team based in UK Trade & Investment exclusively focused on
supporting the UK’s automotive sector, both by supporting further
investments, and also by helping companies to export. The AIO takes
strategic direction from the Automotive Council. This means it can:
• Help investors by making use of all the advantages of being embedded into a highly effective and functioning civil service framework
• Use UKTI’s international network to support companies overseas
…while remaining led by the industry, for the industry.

The AIO is led by senior figures from the automotive industry
• Leverage inward investment to deliver long-term and sustainable
growth in the UK Automotive Sector.
• By taking direction from the Automotive Council...
• Increasing the amount of inward investment into the automotive supply chain;
• Building and strengthening the Government’s relationships with global headquarters of vehicle makers;
• Increasing the amount of foreign investment in automotive sector R&D - particularly in strategic areas;
• Promoting the image of the UK automotive sector among key decision makers in overseas markets, and promote the investment and trade opportunity
Our key target is 15,000 jobs created or secured by Foreign Direct Investment in the automotive supply chain over the next three years (this is double the number created
or secured between 2010 and 2013).

An Automotive Council/BIS Survey has quantified a £3bn opportunity for component suppliers
The Support on Offer
In practice, this strategy means the AIO targets global supply chain
companies, both those with a base in the UK and internationally, to identify
priority companies with potential to expand in the UK.
The AIO can help suppliers:
•To connect with OEMs through direct introductions to purchasing
teams and by hosting Meet the Buyer events
•To access funding opportunities such as RGF and AMSCI to support
increased production in the UK,
•To access partners for R&D collaborations
•To access overseas exporting opportunities
• Via broader support / engagement across government – i.e.
Ministerial support, identification of potential local support (LEPs) &
connection to other government agencies, such as the Manufacturing
Advisory Service and the Technology Strategy Board.

•Continue to promote UK automotive at a global level
• For instance, attending the Beijing Motor Show, April 2014
• Meeting key Investors while in China.
• Visit to Japan in 2014
•Continue to host events to promote the UK auto industry and broker deals
• Co-hosting a UKTI ‘meet the buyer’ event with SMMT on 25 June 2014 in London’s
Excel International Exhibition and Conference Centre, connecting suppliers with OEMs
