Clint was a Shorthorn man from birth, an international show judge, a salesman extraordinaire, and he served as Executive Secretary of ASA from 1941 to 1951. He left the association to join his boyhood Shorthorn friend Frank Harding and his father F.W. Harding in forming American Live Stock Insurance Co., but Clint never left behind his love for the breed he helped make great.

For hours we quizzed Clint about the “golden days of Shorthorns.” And he answered, in-depth and in illuminating detail, as only he could!

Steve asked, “Clint, how are we going to get Shorthorn breeders to focus again on the cow families that made the breed great?”

Without hesitation, and for about an hour, Clint advised a brilliant marketing strategy that has proven to work!

He started off saying, “Steve, you’re going to have to create an ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY. You can’t just tell people the cow families are important. You have to show them! And show them right in their pocketbook, where it counts the most!”

The Great Shorthorn Revival was born!

We were inspired to create The Great Shorthorn Revival in Fall 2001 on a sale weekend trip with Clint Tomson, age 92 at that time.

When we purchased this female, never in our wildest dreams did we imagine she’d ACHIEVE Show Heifer of the Year! Thanks to fellow breeders Dave and Josh Greenhorn for

their belief in her and commitment to her career.

She’s an easy cow to be around - easy on the eyes, the lane from the pasture, and the chute. You can lead her anywhere!

Joe and Kathy Hilger, Keystone Shorthorns, Wisconsin, bought four Achiever Charm embryos last year and they

have THREE heifer calves on the way. What an achievement!

Her Red “Resolve” calf due January 1 is sure to bring joy and prosperity – a New Year’s “resolution” you’ll keep!

(Or, decide to SELL in the Revival next fall!)

This powerful November heifer is the natural calf of Achiever Charm - and she is something special!

We like her length of body and maternal look. She’s definitely a donor cow in development!

Females like this pair make the business of breeding Shorthorns meaningful...and ALL the time, money and effort well spent.

Achiever Charm 71 was a show ring standout – and she’s proven herself equally outstanding as a COW. She goes back to the original LF Lucky Charm through her granddam, an own daughter of the famous National Champion. Her dam 7102 (pictured on page 4) was 2007 NAILE Reserve Grand Champion. Showing and winning is something Achiever Charm did better than any other Shorthorn female in 2012! Then she advanced to “donor duty” and she’s done that better than most too! We call her an OVER “Achiever!”

Element’s Charm is one of the first daughters of National Champion Element 79, see him on pages 29 and 34. Visit with Dave Schaffner and Duane Miller about his contributions to their breeding programs – they recognized

an Economic Opportunity right there in the show ring at Denver, and seized it. And they own this great sire!

The infusion of Solution is ADDED VALUE to Lot 3’s pedigree. Plus, she has a sweet disposition – a good partner for a first year junior!

PVF LADY LUCK 10W – Dam of Lot 4

LITTLE CEDAR LADY LUCK AV 1413Full sister to Lot 4 sold to Woodlawn Farms in Revival 2014

4otL

Right after I bought the dam of Lot 4 from Lee Miller’s Paint Valley Farms at the Ohio Beef Expo sale, Don Cagwin told me she was “the buy of the century.” Our niece Madeline Taylor showed 10W at the Junior National in Michigan in 2010. When Dave McMahon spotted 10W’s Aviator daughter 1119X at the 2011 Revival he snapped her up. (He knows a Great One when he sees one!) And then he found out that Madeline could show her Bred & Owned. Talk about the buy of the century!

Lucky Charm 1119X is yet another result of a great female who “nicks” with Aviator! She resided at Belle Point and was bred to Angus bulls, hence she produced two dandy, black Shorthorn Plus calves. Dave put her on the LCCC trailer headed back after the Belle Point sale this year, with instructions to breed her to a REAL SHORTHORN bull that will prove her a future donor! Thor is the REAL DEAL!

What a spectacular Aviator daughter!

Sure to follow in the winning footsteps of her Grey Goosedam – she will show and

become a super cow.

The Aviator x Grey Goosecombination is MAGIC!

This Pretty Woman is well worth the trip to Beaverton!

LOT 5A

Study the background of the Pretty Woman line and you’llfind that they stem from the same genetics as the amazing

Mona Lisa 35L. Interesting too that Pretty Woman 557’s sire, Warrior, is also the sire of one of the most influential

females of the Shorthorn breed – SS Augusta Pride 3127.

Two words: COW POWER

Pretty Woman 1514 is deep-bodied and powerfulin every way. Tradition on

her Pure Gold x Pretty Woman dam created aunique, total outcross female who can builda breeding program!

Peruse the Pretty Womanfemales feature. We think you’ll agree this is a cow

family to be reckoned with.

SULL ROSE MARY’S GOOSE

We partnered with John Reasor to buy Rose Mary’s Goose, and all of us were thrilled with her consistent success as a show ring champion! But she was really purchased to be exactly what she is now – an extraordinary donor female! Rose Mary 1414, her first natural calf (pictured above), topped the Revival sale last year. She earned NAILE Reserve Division Champion and placed second in “very deep water” at the 2015 Junior National. Rose Mary is safe to Low Rider again, so expect more of the same in her 2016 calf. What a cow! Lot 6A embryo mating is the same one Cyclone Trace purchased last year – and it’s exciting. I believe a bull or female from these embryos could be the next big thing! Economic opportunity abounds. Don’t let the Revival – or Rose Mary’s Goose – pass you by!

REVIVAL BUYER/SELLER AGREEMENTS • For all lots in which future fulfillment is a factor (ie. flushes, retained rights and retained percentage ownership), the Revival provides a written agreement between seller and buyer. Prepared by an attorney, these agreements document the original sale terms in case of a dispute. Both parties will sign, and will be provided a copy. The original, signed agreement is filed by the Revival.

REVIVAL EMBRYO PACKAGES & IVF STATUS • Proper settlement must be made in order for embryos to be released. Shipping arrangements and costs are the responsibility of the buyer. Embryo packages labeled as IVF require an advanced

standard of technical expertise for implantation – attention to this detail is necessary!

PREGNANCY INSURANCE • The Revival suggests that buyers of pregnancy lots invest in pregnancy insurance. The policy covers a live birth and the first 49 days of life at the cost of 15% of the purchase price. Buyers should notify Hugh F. Miller Insurance, Harding & Harding agent, on sale day or by phone at 815-626-1300 by October 5, 2015.

DNA GENOTYPING & GENETIC TESTING • A DNA genotype is utilized in establishing parentage and in determining the presence of a genetic condition. Animals do not have to be DNA genotyped or free of a genetic condition to be registered. If an animal becomes an A.I. sire or a donor dam, all required genetic testing must be completed and a DNA record must be on file with ASA prior to registering any progeny. Recognized genetic conditions that require DNA testing are thoroughly explained on the ASA web site: www.shorthorn.org.Genetic conditions “free” (F) and “carrier” (C) that have been reported to the ASA are continually updated on the website. Buyers are urged to consult the ASA web site for the most up-to-date list of test results for all genetic conditions.Genetic conditions of individuals and donors, as known at press time, are noted within the pedigrees of individual animals. DS testing of some animals is currently in progress, and also noted. Test results will be reported on the sale update.

CALFHOOD VACCINATION OF HEIFERS • All Revival open heifers have been calfhood vaccinated by their consignors.

CANADIAN PURCHASES • We welcome our Canadian friends to make purchases in the sale, and have arranged with Armstrong Farms in Pennsylvania to conduct international testing for a fee of $750, payable directly to the Revival sale upon settlement of your purchase. After testing is complete, the buyer is responsible for making arrangements for shipment to Canada.

Maxim semen is not offered on the open market!

Making a purchase in the Revival creates the eligibility to consign to future sales. Contact Steve French by April 1, 2016 to discuss potential lots you’d

like to consign next year.

When Canadian breeder Robby Dixon called and told me he had a great heifer calf sell-ing that he’d like to keep and show, I jumped at the chance. Starlet was Calf Champion at the Agribition, judged by Aaron Hahn. What a cow she is! Her Low Rider daughter

was popular last year and sold for $8,000. Her late May, red daughter has a good dis-position and will show very well. Three times is a charm; anticipate another nice Low Rider calf next May. (Hey! Buy Lot 16 and call me about sharing a flush to Aviator!)

It is very satisfying checking cows with Low Rider in the pasture. A respected breeder recently called him “The Power Bull.” Natural fleshing ability, never had a foot trim, incredible disposition – and look at his offspring! He sires excellent daughters and sons in equal measure. Tara’s right, having a bull like Low Rider on your “team” is INSPIRING.

I hope his buyer’s neighbors enjoy looking at him as much as ours do. We see cars slow down to watch him walk the front pasture! And he did a LOT more ‘round here than just look good – Low Rider has made a difference in our Shorthorn breeding program. And he can do the same for you after September 26. He’s a major sale attraction! You can buy him, his special semen offers, his service on great cows, and his excellent daughters and an oustanding son!

Randie decided that the first heifer out of CCS Timeproof woul be named Daphne. I remember Matt being upset because I had already sent her registration in. He lectured us that we should have kept the cow family name going forward. It was already moot point because she was from the “Keepsake” Family, followed by two generations of “Timeproof.” As it has turned out, Daphne has made a name for herself in her own right! Randie ended her junior show career with a successful run with Daphne, even taking her to college with her at Black Hawk East. Daphne stayed at our friends, the Stecks, and they traveled to a number of shows while Crystal was campaigning Cherri. Randie and Daphne won a lot of light purple that year (reserve) and had a great time. We knew Daphne was a great heifer, but she became a phenomenal and productive cow and we wanted to flush her. We mated her to Ka’ Ba Double Leader and JM Vortec because, with a pedigree as stacked as hers, we felt these outcross sires would make these matings successful, and they were. As purebred cattle breeders, we spend our evenings reading sale catalogs, and online studying pedigrees. The bull we really wanted to flush Daphne to was SR Red Riders Drive. Everyone knew how well Trump worked on Rodeo Drive daughters and there was a lot of that going on at the time. But we had a Trump daughter and decided to pull the Rodeo Drive back to the top side of the pedigree. SR Red Riders Drive was not a bull that was current, he was already deceased. He had never been in the show ring, but was known for

his longevity (13+ years), outstanding genotype, phenotype and EPD’s that he passed on to his progeny, especially his daughters. Both Matt and I were certain this mating would produce outstand-ing offspring. But, getting semen was going to be challenging. It was limited in availability and extremely expensive, over $1,000 per unit, minimum of five straws. The only place to get it was at the Sullivan Maternal Legends Sale and when we saw that 15 straws would be offered at in upcoming sale we decided to make the trip for the Iowa circuit. We came home empty-handed. Well…actually we purchased a couple heifers, one for our daughter Sydney and a bred heifer on order for a breeder in Ohio. We did not get the Red Riders Drive semen. Maybe next year. The following year, 2007, we consigned Daphne in the Great Shorthorn Revival. She was five years old, in her prime and we really wanted to get her into the hands of a breeder who would take her to the next level. Randie came to the Revival from Illinois, where she was a senior at Western, for the sale of her cow, and her boyfriend Jay came along. Unbeknownst to Randie, there was something else “cooking.” Just before Daphne came in to sell, Jay Kocher walked around the back and into the sale ring and proposed marriage to Randie! We were even more excited when Daphne sold! The gavel came down at $10,000 and the buyer announced was John Sulli-van, Sullivan Farms. The second part of the excitement was short-lived as John was buying Daphne on order for a new breeder. We had retained two flushes so we were still on track to go back to the

Maternal Legends Sale to purchase five units of Red Riders Drive. Matt wasn’t able to make the trip due to work commitments. So, I made the trip out to Iowa alone, stopping in Illinois to meet our future son-in-law’s family and do some wedding planning. I was successful buying Red Riders Drive this time, but only be-cause I purchased the first five units at $200 per unit more than the other two packages. Desperate times call for desperate measures. We no longer owned the Daphne, we had retained only two flushes and she was at the embryologist ready to flush! Daphne had two successful flushes and went on to her new home. Other than her flushes and the resulting progeny, no natural calves were registered after she sold. In May of 2009 when NBS Low Rider hit the ground we knew he was special. Big-footed, big-boned, athletic, heavily-muscled, mod-erate size and dark cherry red. We never showed him but he always had a quiet, calm disposition. When he became full grown, though he had never been haltered, we haltered him and led him around! Matt decided to sell him in the Michigan Beef Expo and we are so very happy that Steve discovered him and his new home was Little Cedar Cattle Company. Steve and Julie have taken Low Rider to the next level, and with their help our vision as breeders was brought full circle. And for that I am so grateful! Low Rider has been good for Narrow Brook, good for Little Cedar and good for Shorthorns. He’s a great bull who inspires all of us to stay the course and do what it takes to make this good breed great!

The Inspiration of Low RiderThe story started when we purchased CCS Timeproof 803 and ST Timeproof 803 as a pair at Don Cagwin’s Labor Day Sale in 2000. Their pedigrees were as deep with great dams and sires as we had ever seen, every level listed major genetic contributors in the Shorthorn breed, so the pair was high on our wish list. We were successful in our purchase and our daughter Randie used her proceeds from the county fair market sale to purchase the heifer calf as her show heifer for the upcoming year. While Randie got along well with Timeproof in the show ring, she proved her real worth with the birth of her first three calves, two of them heifers - NBS Daphne 42M, sired by Trump, then a WHR Sonny daughter, NBS About Time 42N, purchased by the Campbell Family in PA, who campaigned her heavily and purple flowed. Her third calf, a bull also sired by WHR Sonny, was a herd sire for us and did an outstanding job, but, unfortunately, we lost him unexpectedly.

Power Cow! Q and I chose Rosette 021 as our “pick of the heifers” at Leveldale. Note the LAST sentence in BSG’s Lot 23 footnote, and think again both females! Rosette 021 has two good bulls working in commercial herds. Now, her son Shotgun Rider is the “sleeper” Herd Sire Prospect of this sale. We lotted him here instead of with

the other prospects to encourage you to IMAGINE the Low Rider heifer Rosette 021 is carrying! Low Rider keeps picking up more steam with each calf crop. Buy the Low Rider son, raise him right and turn him out next year. Buy the Power Cow and get the Low Rider daughter. Either way you’ll be glad you took this ride!

This heifer has sorted herself to the top of the replacement pen since she was weaned. For a Bonanza to ratio over 100 on her growth records (102@WW & 111@YW) and keep the body and mass they are known for, is quite special.

Unique to her sire’s strengths, she is especially attractive fronted. This is likely due to her pedigree blend of some exceptional herds; Saskvalley, Alta Cedar and Cates Farms. How rare and special is this genetic culmination?

There is no more Bonanza semen left in the USA, so invest in a true keeper with a cow family that is timeless!

JSF GAUGE 137W – Service sire of Lot 24

When we started sorting sale cattle for this fall it didn’t take Cody Sankey more than 30 seconds to find this female and say, “She’s going to Michigan!”

There is a story about these Isobel cattle that is very important. The most famous cow family in Australia, at Marellan/Royalla Shorthorns, the Isobel lineage became “game changers” in the USA at Sutherland Shorthorns, and now in Canada at Shadybrook. To have an Isobel that ranks so high on her $Value Profit Indexes of $British Maternal Index and $Feedlot puts a lump in my throat as I write these footnotes. She signifies how we can take this breed and make their profitable influence around this planet not just good, but great!

Now deceased, Task Force has left us with an incredible set of females that work hard and bring in high quality calves every year. With more progeny recorded that any other sire

in the Top 20 Trait Leader list for $BMI, Task Force is a sure-fire profit generator. He ranks #2 in the breed for $BMI, #6 CED, #24 BW.

The Crystaleens originated in Ronnie Hoffstrand’s herd in North Dakota. They are the “real deal.” Time-tested! The mating of Aviator x Crystaleen x Royal Marc is a lesson in genetic foresight. This is an unbelievable combination. Look at her granddam 8114 – phenotype

This 2015 heifer calf is “cow power in the making,” and that’s why she’s here! Lots of rib and capacity, she moves great and has all the

right .kinds of “cowy” style radiating from her top and bot-tom sides. Top Gun is a big, stout Aviator son backed by Red Riders Drive and the great Misty Juanita line. Lot 30’s dam was Cover Girl of the 2014 Revival catalog! Her long line of Crawfdown Duchess genetics provides consistent power and performance!

This pregnancy result-ed from a flush of 46N offered by Huberdale

in 2008. The Cathy Joyful line is a mainstay of this respected Canadian program, producing both bulls and females that standout equally. 46N won her class at the Canadian Western Agribition, then earned her way to “instrumental” brood cow status in the Huberdale herd. The Cathy Joyful x Aviator mating has “vision” written all over it, topped off by a really nice Angus cross recipient dam to do the important job of raising Lot 31!

Bluebook was the top-selling bull of the Sun Country Bull Sale in Canada. When Grant Alexander told me he’s one of the best bulls he’s ever bred I was “sold,” and decided to

purchase his elite semen lot at the Canadian Shorthorn Assn. annual meeting. I believe he’ll work on a variety of cows. Exciting matings ahead!

Miss Lea 24Y is a phenotypically great Aviator daughter! Moderate, thick, ideal udder, lots of milk, fertile. She is an awesome addition to the Crawfdown

donor program. A true favorite when walking through the herd. Her dam, 60T, is also a herd matriarch. The Miss Lea cow family never disappoints, and neither will the trustworthy Registered Shorthorn Recipient who is carrying this Miss Lea heifer. She’s a good cow that works hard and has a great pedigree of her own. Bonus! •Genetic condition testing of donor in progress; see sale day update

The only Thermal Energy semen to be offered outside of the 50 unit package!

Breed leading power and body mass combined with perfect structural correctness are found with Energy. He was the talk of the western Canadian provinces since he was a calf, and we were lucky to procure him this spring. His dam is one of the most beautiful beef animals we

have ever observed. Top 15% or better for Calving Ease, Weaning Weight, Yearling Weight, Muscle, $F and Top 4% for $British Maternal Index.

Stampede was a jaw-dropping phenotypic powerhouse who did incredible work for our herd and any herd that has sampled him. He was the #1 sire for Calving Ease.

Maternal, meaning his daughters were some of the best laying down and calving on their own. This bull has been used with incredible success on Jazz-influenced cattle.

Saskvalley Stampede is deceased.

This herd sire prospect goes back to the grand dame Margie 6109 on his bottom side – and that’s just one of the reasons he’s so good! Flip over to Lots 22A and 22B to see more of what the proven Margie family is all about. Payroll is stout, sound, heavily-muscled and attractively patterned - he’s got all of Hot Commodity’s beef potential in a beautiful roan package!

The first son of Element 79, the Denver Champion, to sell at public auction! His dam is one of the best producing cows at Crawfdown, she is also the mother of our walking herdsire, Zorro, who was Reserve Sr. Bull Calf Champion at Agribition next to Element 79 himself! Long-spined, nicely-muscled, smooth, and sound, plus an outcross pedigree...all wrapped up in a fabulous roan package. Big future here!

GAME CHANGER“The Great Shorthorn Revival,” 1965: Start today to build up the strength of your herd. Competition demands that all of us Shorthorn people produce bulls that will sire bull calves strong enough to be preferred by commercial cattlemen all over America!

Game Changer is strong! He’s only a May calf and he’s got great perfor-mance! He is long-bodied, good-hipped, sound and really good in his joints. The dam side of his pedigree – specifically Royal Marc – is very intriguing. That’s why we’ve decided to offer to share a flush of her.

This Red Stallion son is free of all genetic conditions and SOLID RED to boot! Could be he’s the REAL breeding bull we’ve been trying to create!

Queens 571 is a direct daughter of the original Queens that are responsible for the countless productive, profitable females working in the Cates herd. The combination of Trump, Rodeo Drive and the Queen line is an enduring matrix of power and predictability that can be mated to today’s most desirable sires with progressive results. She is a prolific egg donor, averaging 10 embryos on her last six flushes.

The Revival is known for our amazing array of Heifer Pregnancies – this one is way more than special! Aviator x Queen! Truly great!

Victoria 1506 is a super cow prospect. The guys who were here to clip for

like her granddam Weston Mary. Future of the breed! This uniquely bred

Montie Soules really likes this Victoria cow – and you will too. She has produced a heckuva Cabrera daughter, Lot 55A, and we have a really good Hot Wire bull calf out of her too. She flushes very well, and sells safe to Low Rider!

KAMILAROI MEAT PACKER

Outstanding daughters of the

now deceased JSF Top Hand 34R

Progressive maternal genetics from the Frances cow family of “Down Under”

A former show bull with absolutely phenomenal skeletal design. Like most legendary bulls, you never know just how good they exactly are until they are gone and the daughters have calved for a couple years. We will be going back and using Top Hand hard in the next few breeding cycles.

Meat Packer was purchased in partnership with the Falls family of Malton Shorthorns at the 2014 Dubbo Shorthorn National Show and Sale. Meat Packer was the Division 4 Champion at Dubbo, the Senior Champion at the 2014 Sydney Royal as well as the top price for the Dubbo sale.

Meat Packer ticks all the boxes; Homozygous polled (DNA tested), moderate frame (7), Large Testicles (42cm), and large EMA (142cm2) with great depth of body, softness and High Marbling potential.

We have great confidence in Meat Packer’s ability to perform due to his outstanding maternal genetics. The Frances line has proven, excellent maternal traits as well as superior milking ability, slick coats, medium frames and consistent high marbling.

#2 in the Trait Leaders list for MILK, #5 for Marbling and #34 for Total Maternal EPD

IMPACT We asked these Revival consignors to mate the featured donors to accessible sires to create a HERD SIRE and a FEMALE, based on pedigree, performance data, visual appraisal, marketability and their vision for the Shorthorn breed. They also shared their rationale...but we’ll save that for sale day conversation!

THE FUTURE BELONGS TO THOSE WHO BUILD IT.A breed is built by those who mix the feed, carry the pitchfork and plan the matings.

You are the breed builders. And you must build your own future. Excerpt from an American Shorthorn Association advertisement in Shorthorn World, 1958

We believe we must breed the kind of strength and quality into our Shorthorns to make bulls and their calves strong enough to be preferred by ranchers, and commercial cattlemen and take some bull business away from these other breeds.

The Great Shorthorn Revival is here. The need for strong Shorthorn bulls is 100 times greater than your and

our capacity to produce at this time. But, opportunity is where the

NEED is…and because the need is great, the opportunity is great!

Don’t let the Great Shorthorn Revival pass you by!

Start today! If you need a new bull, travel farther, look harder, pay more…but insist on the bull you need. Don’t settle for a substitute for a good bull.

Pick up the big, strong females you occasionally have the opportunity to buy. The kind that will produce a calf every year, and give enough milk to make a job of the calf.

Start today to build up the strength of your herd. Competition demands that all of us Shorthorn people produce bulls that will sire bull calves strong enough to be preferred by commercial cattlemen all over America!

50th Anniversary issue of Shorthorn World
