Unsafe Waters

The teenagers tend to play in unsafe waters by friends’ instigation, and some of them are even incapable of swimming. As the river depth differs, with the instigation and ridicule of friends as a catalyst, drowning accidents may happen to those who are incapable of swimming

How to Prevent Injury for the Teenagers

These accidents happen mainly because the teenagers lack for companion and a safe place to have fun; besides, they are not educated with correct safety knowledge. A safe space with companions, therefore, can reduce these accidents. An abandoned space is renovated to be a safe space for the teenagers in the first place; interesting activities are provided to attract them; and volunteers are recruited to accompany them; finally “Five Flavored House” comes to existence

The Establishment of “Five Flavored House”

“Five Flavored House” came to existence on August 30th 2008 when the community strove for preserving a small hut roofed with sugarcane leaves, a traditional style of Japanese architecture known as “Feng Gu Dou”. With cooperation of National Dong Hwa University, the hut was transformed into an after-school education as well as recreation center for children and teenagers from local communities.

A Safe Apace

The university volunteers lead the teenagers to run their own thrift store. Based on the idea “learning by doing”, the teenagers are educated with attitude and techniques of working and then enhance their self-confidence

• Why Teenagers Stay in the House? “Five Flavored House” is a community charity shop selling second-hand goods. It’s run by local children with the assistance from volunteers. The main idea of the shop is not about economic interest but providing children in rural area, via business transactions, with the opportunity to see the world outside, to accumulate a variety of interpersonal relationship and experience, to open up their visions, and to eventually boost their self-esteem. The teenagers come to the house, learn techniques and manage the goods in “Five Flavored House” together. As a result, the accidents involving children learning and working in “Five Flavored House” reduced
