Official Elf Inspectors and Guest

Barbara Heal, Kingston, ON began my canine career in 1969 breeding Samoyeds under the "Polobar” prefix while living in Truro, NS. During that time, I became one of the Founding Members of the Cobequid Kennel Club. I am Life Member of the Canadian Kennel Club, Past President of the Ottawa Kennel Club and served as Show Chair for the Purina Invitational Show of Shows for 9 years in addition to the Eukanuba Best of the Best 100. As well, I have served as President of the Samoyed Club of Canada on two separate occasions and wrote the Samoyed Breedlines column in Dogs In Canada magazine for eight years. I also currently am an active contributor to the Canadian Dog Fancier Magazine. I now serve as Coordinator on the CKC Judge’s Observation Program. My interest in Doberman Pinschers began in 1980 after joining my late husband Fred with his "Jagermeister" Dobermans. At that time, I became a co-breeder and handler of Dobermans and later began handling many other breeds. In 2004 I began my judging career and in 2018 attained all-breed status. I am an active member of the Canadian Dog Judges Association and currently serving as Vice President. In addition to judging across North America; I have judged in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Finland, Korea and Mexico.

Sue Ellyn Rempel, Ilse des Chenes East, MB - Our first show dog was bought at a horse show. A friend who showed German Shepherds was visiting her horse at our barn and she suggested we should show her. From there, we did, and she was our first Champion! Our next show dog was a Standard Long Hair Dachshund who loved showing and became our second champion and did some nice winning. Even though we had only shown for a couple of years, we questioned how good he was by comparing him to the other Dachshund breeds and reading and comparing photos. His first loss was to a bitch from USA bred by Hannelore Heller of Han Jo Dachshunds. We immediately contacted Hannelore and she sent us a puppy who became CAN/AM: CH: Han Jo’s Cottonpicker L who was one of Canadas top winning hounds. It was quite the journey and learning experience. We showed, became breeders and I started handling for others. So many people helped me along the way. I had grown up with Standard Poodles, so it wasn’t surprising that through the years I had owned and shown all varieties. Mid 80s CKC decided they would be splitting the Working group, so I bit the bullet and applied for Herding breeds, Great Danes, Doberman Pinschers and Samoyeds............ The rest is history and an amazing journey, dogs and friendships!

Frances Smith, Buenos Aires, AR – FCI and FCA All Breed Judge and Director of the FCA National Genealogical Registry. She is the founding member and President of the Yorkshire Terrier Club Argentino. Involved with dogs since childhood and has grown up experiencing the dog world as an exhibitor, groomer, breeder, Judge, Club President and member and Director of the FCA Registry. She breeds Yorkies under the prefix of “Las Heras” as well as has bred the “Von der Hall II” Wire Dachshunds, “Francesca” Bichons and “Viva Vaia” Shar-Pei. Her expertise ranges far into the world of Samoyeds, Agentine Dogo, Siberian Husky, Old English Sheepdogs, Pugs, Basset Hounds, Scottish Terriers and Golden Retrievers. Her work in pursuit of Purebred Dogs doesn’t stop there: she is a published author of many Cynology works and courses as well as being involved as a Keynote Speaker and participating in Breeder and Judges Education.

Laure Reeves, Grants Pass, OR (Special Guest) - Laura is an AKC Breeder of Merit and retired zone rep for the Professional Handlers Association, a second-generation breeder of German Wirehaired Pointers under the Scotia Prefix. Her handling career spanned more than 20 years, finishing dogs from every group. Specializing in rare breeds and challenging dogs, piloting several dogs into the BIS and BISS rankings. Dogs from Scotia Kennels are simply put, versatile. Claiming show titles, hunt tests, field trials and more. Her dedication to the breed and preserving its qualities for the all-weather, rugged, sound gun dog that the breed’s founders envisioned is the priority. Many a childhood summer was spent training field Labs to improve their retrieves, Clumbers how to swim and GWP to retrieve to hand. Her dedication to her breed is seen in her work, holding many official titles for the GWPCA – whether through her writing or the on the ground events to judges education. Laura’s background is in news, as a reporter. She has had a great three year run in “As the Wheels Turn” on Best in Show Daily. To her current work as host and founder of PureDog Talk an outstanding exhibitor education platform.

I was Manitoba’s Top Junior Handler for three consecutive years (’84, ’85 and ’86), as well as the recipient of the Martha Thorne Top Junior Handler in Canada Award for two years (’85 and ’86). I truly feel much of what I learned showing dogs at such a young age provided me many of the tools that allowed me to be successful in my business career. My wife Nadeen and I live on the outskirts of Winnipeg and have three grown children. We continue to breed English Setters, and own two PBGVs. I started my publishing and printing business in 1993, and we also opened a pet resort in 2016 with our daughter Celeste, which now has two locations. I feel so fortunate that I have the pleasure of judging dogs, and I thoroughly enjoy every assignment.

I put everything into my judging and I’m really looking forward to seeing your dog’s soon.

Donald Mahoney, Wellington NSW - is a retired journalist turned FCI All Breed Dog Judge. With his start in Irish Setters his passion grew to Standard Smooth Dachshunds, Labrador Retrievers, Salukis, Papillons (Afolar or Mondelise Kennels), Jack Russell Terriers and Cocker Spaniels. Papillion highlights include importing and owing the first Phalene Papillon believed to be the only one to win multiple BIS in the world. As well as being the first person in the Southern Hemisphere to ever judge for The Papillon (Butterfly) Dog Club in England when he judged at their Open Show with an entry of 202 Papillon’s ! Since 2009 he has been breeding and showing Cocker Spaniels and Jack Russell Terriers in partnership with his wife Carol under the Occuli prefix, where his foundation stud dog has helped him to celebrate many top gundog and producer awards at many of Australia’s most prestigious dog shows. Newer to his kennel is the Jack Russell, where his first homebred champion has allowed him to celebrate many successes at the Darwin Royal at 8 mos of age. Over a 42-year career in the running and administration of dog shows, he spent time with the Adelaide Royal Show. 40-year passion and experience in Ring Stewarding and established dog show volunteer!

Bill Blair, Saanichton, BC started in obedience in the mid 70’s in Regina with a Miniature Poodle. After moving to the West Coast in 1977, we gravitated to American Cockers who are still our favorites. We have been members of the North Saanich Dog Obedience Training Club (NOSA) since the mid 80’s, actively involved in trialing, teaching classes at all levels (including rally) and holding various executive positions in the club including, trial chair and trial secretary. After retiring, I started judging and I am currently licensed to judge obedience and rally at all levels for the Canadian Kennel Club and the Association of Island Obedience Clubs.

Diana MacKenzie, Hamilton, ON is a Long Service member (20 years) of the CKC having had membership since 1994. I am currently serving as the zone 7 senior obedience representative which involves obedience and rally obedience rule changes for all of Canada. I have been licensed by the CKC since 2002 and the AKC since 2008 as an obedience and rally obedience judge which takes me all over Canada and the US judging. I am a life member of the Hamilton Dog Obedience Club which I joined in 1979. I am also currently the Coordinator for the Hamilton St John Ambulance Therapy dog unit which I joined with my first therapy dog Tasha in 1997.

Biography unavailable

Jeanine Jorgensen – Weyburn, SK has been involved with dogs my entire life! I titled my first dog a Shar-Pei when I was 11 years old. We went on to earn our CDX and a few other titles along the way. Training her began my love affair with competitive obedience. In 2003 I acquired my first English Springer Spaniel. In 2007 my kennel "Keypoint" was registered with the CKC. In a very limited breeding program, I have produced multiple group winners, BPIS/BPISS winners, as well as multiple dogs titled in obedience, rally, barn hunt, and agility. My husband and I relocated from Alberta to Weyburn, SK in 2017. We are enjoying being part of the Saskatchewan show scene.

“This CKC program identifies and rewards responsible and caring owners and their canine partners! The purpose of the CGN program test is to ensure that our dogs are accepted as valued members of the community and can be counted on to present good manners at home, in public places and in the presences of other dogs. The program was created to assist canine owners in combating anti-dog sentiment and to enhance community awareness of responsible dog ownership and the bnefits associated with dog ownership.” (Quoted directly from the Canine Good Neighbour Program Paticipant Handbook).

This test is not a competion for precision performance by the handler and the dog. Rather, it assesses the handler and the dog relationship together with the handler’s ability to control the dog. We recommend that you read the CGN Paticipation Handbook so that you will be familiar with what you and your dog will be required to do.

The Canine Good Neighbour (CGN) Participation Handbook is available from the CKC by calling the order Desk at 416-675-5511, by visiting the CKC website www.ckc.ca
