The Kennel Club has joined forces with Bauwow to make sure that Petlog Premium

The Kennel Club Art Gallery’s current exhibition, ‘Significant women who have made a difference for dogs’, which was due

to finish at the end of June has been extended and will now be on show until the end of July due to popular demand.

The exhibition is timely, coinciding as it does with the centenary commemorations connected with the landmark Government decision to give women the vote in 1918. It is also 40 years since the Kennel Club agreed to allow women to become full members of the club.

The exhibition focuses on twenty different women who made significant contributions to the world of dogs during their lifetimes including Queen Victoria, the first monarch to compete and win at dog shows; founder of the PDSA, Maria Dickin; renowned canine artist, Maud Earl; creator of the Ladies Kennel Association, Alice Stennard Robinson; leading suffragette and a founder of the animal rights movement, Frances Power Cobbe; and Britain’s first female dog show judge, Mary Ann Foster, who stepped into the judging ring in 1889.

The display includes information regarding these pioneering women along with a number of exhibits related to their work in the dog world. These include portraits of Veronica Tudor-Williams’ Basenji, Fula of the Congo; the famous Beagle, Ch Rossut Triumphant, bred and owned by Catherine Sutton; and Sybil Churchill’s Cairn Terrier, Ch Campanologia Pricket. There is extra interest in these exhibits as they were painted by women artists.

The Kennel Club Art Gallery is open to all and free to visit; however, an appointment is necessary. Visiting hours are Monday to Friday 9.30am - 4.30pm. To book an appointment, please phone 020 7518 1064 or email [email protected].

Significant Women Exhibition

The International Canine Health Awards, organised by the Kennel Club Charitable Trust,

were presented to Professor Yasuko Rikihisa from the Department of Veterinary Biosciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Ohio State University; Dr Danny Scott, James Law of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, New York; Royal Veterinary College PhD student, Alice Denyer; University of Liverpool third-year undergraduate student, Jennifer Palfreyman; and breed health co-ordinator for Basset Hounds, Tina Watkins.

The winners were given prize money to further their work in the field of canine research, underwritten by a major gift from Vernon and Shirley Hill of Metro Bank. Professor

Yasuko Rikihisa was awarded £40,000 for the International Award, Dr Danny Scott £10,000 for the Lifetime Achievement Award, Alice Denyer £10,000 for the Postgraduate Student Inspiration Award, Jennifer Palfreyman £5,000 for the Undergraduate Student Inspiration Award, and Tina Watkins £1,000 for the Breed Health Co-ordinator Award. Nominations for the awards were judged by a panel of influential representatives from the veterinary profession and the world of scientific research.

NEWS from the Kennel Club

Changes to the legislation that regulates dog breeders, home boarders, boarding kennels and

pet shops in England have now been passed in Parliament. The Kennel Club is still awaiting the publication of the accompanying guidance which will provide more detail on the practical implications. The new rules will come

into force in October 2018 and the litter threshold for a breeding licence in England will drop from five to three litters in any 12-month period.

However, the specific conditions to which a licensed breeder or boarder will have to adhere, ie maximum number of dogs an individual can be responsible for, and canine living

conditions, are to be confirmed. Likewise, we await confirmation of how the Kennel Club Assured Breeder Scheme will be recognised within the new licensing framework.

New breeding regulations

The Festival is open to any dog, as long as it is registered on one of the Kennel Club's registers – Breed

or Activity – making it one of the few world-class agility competitions to be open to pedigrees, rescue dogs and crossbreeds alike.

The Festival always includes graded classes for all height categories and all grades of agility dog and handler, so that everyone gets a chance to compete at their own level at the UK's largest agility show. With a series of cup classes for all levels – the Starters Cup, Novice Cup, British Open and Nations Cup – as

well as special classes for younger handlers and YKC members, there are many opportunities for the best

performing dogs to secure a place at Discover Dogs in London or Crufts.

For the hundreds of visitors and spectators who now come to enjoy the Festival atmosphere, there are also opportunities to participate: 'Have a Go' agility to try out their own dogs' aptitude and their own handling skills, and a

Companion Dog Show with pedigree and novelty classes. Plus of course a wide range of trade stands offering goods for both humans and dogs, all adding to the Festival fun!

FIELD OFFICER VACANCY

A vacancy has arisen for a Field Officer in the area covering the South East of England. This position requires that the candidate resides within easy travelling distance of Surrey, Sussex, Kent and Essex.

The position also requires extensive knowledge of all aspects of dog shows and dog showing and with good personal skills to enable them to liaise with Show Secretaries and members of their committee so that the high standard of Kennel Club licensed events is maintained and improved upon.

This role involves attending dog shows most weekends, particularly in the summer months, reporting back to the Kennel Club on all aspects of the show and attending one seminar a year in May.

ANNUAL RETURNS 2018

Secretaries of Registered and Affiliated Societies and Breed Councils are reminded that 2018 Annual Returns must be submitted to the Kennel Club (Canine Activities Department) by 31 July 2018. Please email documents to [email protected] or post and mark your envelope ‘annual returns’.

The items required to complete the Annual Returns are listed in the Kennel Club Year Book 2017/2018, under Regulation C 4.a. Secretaries of Breed Clubs, Breed Councils, General Canine Societies, Training Clubs and Agricultural/Municipal Societies should note that all items must be forwarded each year, even if there are no changes from the previous year. Any proposed changes to rules must be clearly indicated. In the case of a Breed Club which uses its Breed Council's judges lists, this fact should be clearly notified in a covering letter.

For Breed Clubs and Councils, criteria for inclusion on judges lists must also be submitted. Any proposed amendments to the criteria must be highlighted and approval sought.

Breed Clubs are required to submit the Kennel Club Code of Ethics with any additional clauses as part of the Annual Returns.

The safe receipt of complete Annual Returns will be acknowledged and failure to receive a receipt within 6 weeks should be queried with the Canine Activities Department.

As part of its External Affairs activities the Kennel Club runs a dog owners group KC Dog with approximately 5,000 members, which was

established to monitor and keep dog owners up-to-date about dog related issues, including Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) and Dog Control Orders (DCOs) being introduced across the country.

Local authorities in England and Wales can use PSPOs, and in Northern Ireland DCOs to restrict where dog walkers can go with their dog and whether they can let their dogs off lead. For example these restrictions may specify a particular park (or area within the park) where dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, or ban dogs from a beach for specific times of year. At present there are no equivalent powers available to local authorities in Scotland.

The Kennel Club works with local authorities and dog owners to highlight the importance of PSPOs and DCOs being necessary and proportionate responses to problems caused by irresponsible dog owners. It is vitally important that local dog owners respond to proposals so that orders reflect their dog walking needs. For more information please visit www.kcdog.org.ukT

q. For Licences issued to Authorised Clubs or Societies for Limited Agility Shows there would be no change to fees up to and including the first 10 licences per year, thereafter from 11-15 licences the fee would be £100 per day and for 16 or more licences a year it would be £150 per day.

RALLY & LISTED STATUS AGILITYThe fees for Rally & Listed Status Agility are both £60. Listed Agility also has an additional fee of 5p per dog over 1000 dogs (maximum £100).
