• Johann Gutenberg took a wine press, transformed it into a printing press, and mixed oil and soap together to make ink.

• In 1456, he made 180 copies of the fi rst

printed book: a Bible.

• Father encouraged him to study law

• A sudden religious experience inspired him to become a monk

• He turned to the Bible, and confession for comfort
