With less than two weeks left for citizensto register their opposition to the city’s bor-rowing of $59 million to finance the buildingof the new civic centre, a familiar face with alot of community connections has decided tolend a hand to the fight.

Current school trustee and former citycouncillor Casey Cook has offered to helpJames Crosty collect the thousands of sig-

natures needed tooppose the proposedborrowing.

“I was in droppingoff me and my wife’sforms and we gottalking,” said Cookof his conversationwith Crosty. “I said Iwould help with talk-ing to other people inthe city about signingforms. I offered to helpout because I feel verystrongly that peopleof all political stripesand ideas should beopposed to this.

“For me, it’s anissue of prudence and how a city protectsits assets. I’m very, very concerned abouthow this will affect the Massey Theatre andhow it affects our schools. ... I believe the cityjust doesn’t have the background to managethe risks in a project of this magnitude. Thedownside is incredible, and it’s just too greatfor the city.”

In the 32 years the NewWestminster Police soccer camphas been held, this may be the firsttime that two of the participantshave come from as far as Alex andOlivia Shepherd have come.

Alex, eight, is rocking a newpair of blue David Beckham soc-cer cleats while younger sisterOlivia, who turned six on July 25,is more concerned about sharingcupcakes with members of herTeam Greece squad.

The Shepherds are attend-ing the camp direct from Baar,Switzerland, which is an hour out-side of Zurich.

Father Chris moved to Zug tocontinue his stockbroking career,packing up his wife, Michelle, andfive kids several years ago for themove.

Chris is a proud alum-ni of Herbert Spencer andNew WestminsterSecondary Schoolwho moved the fam-ily to Calgary fouryears ago for his workand two years ago toZug.

This summer, as afamily vacation, Chrissent the entire broodback for five weeksof summer in NewWestminster, and oneof the first things hedid was make surehis two youngest reg-istered for the nowworld-famous soccercamp.

“Alex really wanted to catchup with some of his old friends,”said Michelle. “For Olivia, it’s achance to get out and play. Shetold her dad on the phone, ‘I don’tthink I’m very good at soccer. I’mnot winning.’”

Yes, Chris has stayed back inZug for work, but his kids arehaving a ball of a time.

Olivia’s coach, NewWestminster Police Const. LaraDewitt, went through the soccerschool as a child and has volun-teered for the past 20 years.

“I had no idea she had comefrom so far away,” said Dewitt.“She’s got a great attitude, prob-ably one of our most enthusiasticplayers, and she’s a hustler.”

Dewitt enjoys working with thefour-to-six-year-old kids becauseof their unbridled enthusiasm.

“There’s so much energy,” shesaid. “Sometimes, it’s hard to con-trol, but they are a lot of fun.”

Across the field, Olivia’s olderbrother is on Team Korea, coachedby Const. Carmel Keenan and herhusband, Brian Dorish.

Dorish is also surprised to hearhow far Alexander came for thecamp.

“That’s neat,” he said. “It’s socool to hear that and that’s becauseyou find out that people don’t for-get their roots. That’s what makesthis camp cool. You have peoplewho know about this and havetheir kids come back even whenthey’ve moved away.”

Dorish said Alexander has beenvery easy to work with.

“He listens well and his skillsare pretty good,” said Dorish.“We’re all having a good time.”

Alexander is happy to show offhis new blue cleats – his mother,Michelle, said she couldn’t buya comparable cleat at a compa-rable price in Switzerland – andtalk about his time back in NewWestminster.

“I saw theWhitecaps win 2-1(over San Jose on July22),” he said.

Alexander hasalso attended soccercamps in Switzerlandand he likes this campmore because theteams started play-ing semi-competitivegames earlier in theschedule.

In Switzerland, thecamps are more skills-based, with gamesonly occurring at theend of the camp.

Michelle is soakingin the sun with another daughter,Montana – her two other daugh-ters, Mikala and Krista are else-where – while the two youngestShepherd children frolic at thecamp.

As Const. Bruce Ballingallmakes an appearance, a buzz goesup around the 290 other childrentaking part in the camp.

Ballingall is his usual energeticself and the kids flock to him.

“It’s not hard to have fun here,”said Ballingall, who intends toretire next May from the policedepartment. “That’s why I keepcoming back.”

As the kids move from stationto station, the most popular placeis the Tim Hortons truck, where

coffee and Timbits are flying outthe back of the truck.

And also on Wednesday after-noon, the highlight was a speechfrom New Westminster native andcurrent Ottawa Senators centreKyle Turris.

On Thursday, the NewWestminster Fire Department

turned the fire hoses on the kidsfor an all-world water fight andon Friday, the tearful goodbyeswill be exchanged between newand old friends.

As for Alex and Olivia, it’sanother two weeks in the RoyalCity before heading back toSwitzerland via Italy.

“We’re having a good timeand the kids have enjoyed them-selves,” said Michelle.

And maybe next year, thekids will come back for anotherkick at the world-famous NewWestminster Police soccer camp.

Adults in New Westminster who haveregular contact with babies and youngchildren should get the free whoopingcough (pertussis) vaccine.

This is the message from the FraserHealth Authority after the death of amonth-old baby in the Lethbridge areaof southern Alberta this month, due tocomplications related to this highly con-tagious disease.

Outbreaks of whooping cough havebeen reported across Canada and the U.S.this year. The hardest hit areas are theFraser Valley in B.C., southern Alberta,and parts of southwestern Ontario andNew Brunswick.

In the Fraser Health region, about 290people – including nine children under

the age of one – have been infected withwhooping cough since last fall. Therehave been no fatalities reported.

In New Westminster, the number ofcases reached seven as of July 25.

The peak of the outbreak came in mid-winter, with a second wave in May thisyear.

“We haven’t changed our view of theseriousness of this disease, even thoughwe’re having fewer cases,” said Paul VanBuynder, chief medical health officer withthe Fraser Health Authority. “We knowthat this is a nasty disease for young chil-dren. We still want anybody that hasn’tgot around to being vaccinated that hascontact with young children to go anddo it.”

Vaccines are still available at no costfor pregnant women and adults in theFraser Health region who have contactwith young children and babies, whichincludes childcare workers, day care cen-tre staff, nannies and grandparents.

The vaccine is available at pharmaciesand from general practitioners.

Premier Christy Clark’s recent postur-ing over the proposed Enbridge pipelineis all fine and dandy, but her threats toquash the project if B.C. doesn’t get itsshare of the oil profits are likelyempty at best.

The question is: Will B.C.even have a say in whether thepipeline goes through? Sure,there are provincial permits needed for theproject to go ahead, but could the premierreally stop the pipeline? Clark and theLiberals missed the deadline to sign up to

present evidence to the joint review panelfor the Enbridge hearing, and projectsreviewed by the National Energy Boarddon’t get a separate provincial review

process. But that’s all irrelevantanyway, because a few monthsago, the Conservatives quietlyupdated their “economic actionplan” website and happened

to mention that they would now havethe final say in cases rejected by theNational Energy Board. That’s right – thefinal decision is left in the hands of the

Conservatives, who seem awfully friendlywith big oil these days. The whole pointof the National Energy Board was to havean independent federal body to regulatethese kinds of projects while consideringCanada’s national interests.

What does this have to do with theLower Mainland? Kinder Morgan’s TransMountain line, the only line currently run-ning oil products to the West Coast, ends afew miles from here in Burnaby. The com-pany is trying to corner the rising demandfor crude in Asia and wants to more than

double pipeline capacity from 300,000 to750,000 barrels of oil a day – that’s morethan Enbridge’s proposed 525,000 barrelsfor the Northern Gateway project. KinderMorgan will apply for project approval inthe next couple of years, and what playsout with Enbridge could be a harbinger ofwhat’s to come for Kinder Morgan.

So if the National Energy Board rejectsKinder Morgan’s plan, the Conservativescan say, “Too bad, B.C. Suck it up.”

Something to think about next time wehead to the polls, perhaps?

Crows create cleverconundrum

Crows are pests.They’re the reason

your garbage is scatteredall over the lawn when the canlid falls off.

They devour crops and arethe indirect cause of manyannoying hours of bird cannonsin rural areas.

Their raucous caws will wakeyou up early on a Saturday.They’ll poop on your car.

So who feels sadwhen a crow gets shotas vermin or run overby a car? No one.

Would you feel badif it was a chimpanzee, though?How about if people were goingout willy-nilly shooting dol-phins? Not so nice to kill Flipper,is it?

The problem is, we’re learn-ing that crows – common-as-dirtcrows – might be among thesmartest animals on the planet.

Read almost any older text-book about animal intelligence,and it will tell you that birds arejust not as smart as mammals.Tiny brains.

They don’t even have a neo-cortex, for crying out loud!

Which does not help explainhow some crows can apparentlycount to small numbers. Or howtheir cousins, the magpies, canrecognize themselves in a mirror– something only humans, greatapes, elephants and a few spe-cies of dolphins have managedso far.

Then there’s the NewCaledonian crow, which seemsto be the Rhodes scholar of the

family tree. These crows fromthe South Pacific use tools inthe wild, fashioning them out ofsticks and bits of grass, to reachinaccessible food. In captivity,one crow has repeatedly bentstraight wires to make betterhooks for grabbing food – with-out training.

Crows have also shown theability to think ahead: given atool too short to reach a food

source, but longenough to reach alonger tool, they’vesolved the riddle onmultiple occasions.

Other animals that can dothat? Humans. Apes. That’sabout it.

Your family dog may befriendly, and your cat may notbe as mean as most cats, butneither of them is as smart as acrow.

So here’s my question: whatdo we owe to animals that aresmart, but not as smart as us?

Let’s be clear; crows are notgoing to be writing sonnets orsolving complex math equationsany time soon.

But neither will chimps orgorillas. Most people want thoseanimals treated humanely, atleast in part because of their abil-ity to think and reason more likewe do than, say, the commonNorwegian rat.

I like my tuna dolphin-safe,and I’d prefer if any scientifictesting on apes is done in ashumane a manner as possible.But crows?

B.C. selling out for Big OilDear Editor:

Any hope that our premier might act decisivelyin the Northern Gateway pipeline boondoggle withprinciple and responsibility has been drowned in asea of greed and cowardly politicking.

Instead of moving to protect the hopes and wish-es of British Columbians, Christy Clark remainssitting on the fence, keeping the gate open to thetime bomb exploitation of Big Oil, Prime MinisterStephen Harper and China.

The First Nations in the path of the toxic tarsandsscheme are opposed to the pipeline and the hugeincrease in oil tanker traffic but instead of standingup for them, she asks only that they have a chance toparticipate in what to them is inevitable disaster bya bungling pipeline company messing with a petro-brew that’s impossible to clean up.

First on Clark’s list is pushing for a bigger piece ofthe action, which of course outrages greedy Alberta.What the greed-mongers fail to realize is that a foulsmelling deal aimed at generating fast, temporarymoney is a gun aimed at the heart of what is trulyvaluable: a veritable treasure store of pristine rivers,wilderness, wildlife, fish and beauty that can helpsustain whole generations to come.

Madam Clark has made B.C. a whore. All that’sneeded now is to settle the price. Can somebodyplease tell me why governments have environmentministers?

provincial politics are being played outwithin our city council; but the extentto which city council is beholden to the“Labour Party” is truly staggering.

What does our city council know aboutthe benefits (or not) of privatizing liquordistribution in B.C.?

Are they privy to the four competingbids that are being received by the B.C.government? The provincial governmentis responsible for delivering services in theway most cost efficient for the citizenry(read: taxpayers.)

What business does a municipal councilhave wading in on this issue? Since whenis liquor distribution a municipal issue?

Funny that our city council can find thetime to support a moratorium on privatiz-ing liquor distribution (which is not whatthey were put in place to do) but couldn’tafter 18 months make a decision whichreflected the wants of the residents andexpansion aspirations of the Elizabeth FrySociety in a manner that was representativeof the constituents of Sapperton (which iswhat they are put in place to do).

Lots of local office spaceDear Editor:

Re: City hall moves forward with planThe Record, July 18.

I, too, along with everyone I speak to,am concerned not only with the officetower on top of the civic centre, but alsothe latest alternative approval process forborrowing $59 million.

Instead of using municipal revenuesof $33 million already approved in thefive-year capital program for facility, roadmaintenance and park development, itwill be used to help fund the office towerand hence, the need to borrow $59 millionto cover those initiatives, along with $26million for the civic centre and the neces-sary interim financing.

It seems to me we are borrowing moneyfrom Peter to pay Paul. But let confusingfinancing, be as it may.

My main concern regarding the office

tower is that, according to the MetroVancouver Office Market Report as of2011, we have, in this city, a total of 151,726square feet of vacant office space, or about10 per cent.

The largest amount encompasses threefull floors in the Royal Bank, at about30,000 square feet, along with Royal CityCentre, with 75,000 square feet.

Further to this, there are now three newmixed-use developments offering officespace, not the least of which is UptownProperty Group’s Queen’s Park West atSixth Avenue and 6th Street, the samecompany that pulled out of the city’s jointeffort.

All of these will offer Class A officespace which, we are told, is in short sup-ply. But, in fact, there is already more than61,000 square feet of vacancy in Class Aoffice space in New Westminster, accord-ing to the Market Report.

On this office tower and civic centre,everything is premised on the optimis-tic supposition of what is projected willhappen. Will our office tower add to thealready high vacancy rate?

What if the world economic crisis con-tinues or gets worse, as many economists,along with the Bank of Canada, are nowpredicting?

I agree with Chuck Puchmayr that thereare too many uncertainties to take such agamble.

As for the timing, I have to agree withthe comments of many others in the paperwho have expressed concern.

To have an alternative approval pro-cess during the summer months, wheremore than 4,500 or the 10 per cent of theresidents have to sign a negative responseto this $59 million loan is, in my opinion,unacceptable and manipulative.

With due respect, mayor and council,where is the public process or input on thisbylaw (tax increase)?

How much debt are we already carryingin this city and why not have a referendumon such a large financial commitment?

I intend to sign in opposition to thisloan bylaw and I hope enough others doto bring about a referendum.

No one is making soft-focus nature documentar-ies about cute baby crowsgrowing up in the junglesof the Congo.

Crow chicks look likebags of wrinkled skin dot-ted with dirty feathers.

Crows do not havepermanent smiles likebottlenose dolphins.They don’t do tricks atSeaWorld, unless youcount dive-bombing runsto snatch hotdogs out of

the hands of tourists.Unlike chimps and dol-

phins, crows are not now,and likely never will be, indanger of extinction.

I once saw a flock (ormurder) of crows mob-bing an owl, chasing itfrom tree to tree in broaddaylight.

Whether we owe crowsspecial treatment becauseof their intelligence, theymay not need it.

Crows are tough,they’re omnivorous, and

they’ve survived andthrived in big human citiesfor hundreds of years.

Maybe that’s why wedon’t like crows as muchas we should. They’reloud, dirty, aggressive andsmart. They’re us, withfeathers.

If there are sufficientpetitions to oppose the loanauthorization bylaw, thecity would have to go to areferendum to get supportfrom taxpayers to borrowthe funds.

Crosty has been leading

the charge on getting therequired number of signa-tures needed for a success-ful opposition to the bor-rowing and has made theforms available at his busi-ness, STC Creative, at 239Sixth St. between 10 a.m.and 4 p.m. weekdays.

The forms can also bepicked up at the recep-tion desk at city hall or beprinted off from the city’swebsite.

The borrowing of themoney became an issuewhen the Uptown PropertyGroup decided againstbuilding an office toweron top of the future civiccentre on Columbia Street,and the city decided to pro-ceed with construction of

the office development onits own.

The city is proposing toborrow up to $59 millionthat would be put towardthe $94 million project.

The $94-million totalbudget includes $41.5 mil-lion for the civic centre,$12.5 million for the parkingstructure (to be used by theoffice tower and the civicfacility), and $40 million forthe office development.

The city will use $43 mil-lion in casino money knownas “development assistancecompensation” for the proj-ect.

A small fire occurred onJune 25 at 46 Sixth Streetabout 6:30 p.m. Fire inspec-tor Brent Joel said there wasminimal structural damageto the building, but the con-tents of the Grand CentralConsignment shop sufferedsmoke damage.

Parents on the hunt for sports equip-ment for their burgeoning athletes won’thave to go far to find some deals.

KidSport New Westminster is holdingits first-annual used sports equipmentsale on Sunday, Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2p.m. at Glenbrook Middle School.

The event will help KidSport NewWestminster raise money so it can finan-cially support children who may not other-wise be able to play organized sports.

Sandon Fraser, co-chair of KidSportsNewWest, said donations of used sportsequipment are greatly appreciated.

“We want to make sure when peopleshow up, there is some good-qualityequipment to choose from,” he said.

“This is a great place to donate that

stuff to a good cause. All the equipmentgoes toward supporting youth in thecity,” he added.

New Westminster residents wanting todonate equipment for the sale can drop offitems at the New WestminsterSecondary School parking lotat 835 Eighth St. on the fol-lowing days: Wednesday, Aug.1 (6 to 8 p.m.); Wednesday,Aug. 8 (6 to 8 p.m.); Saturday,Aug. 11 (10 a.m. to noon);and Thursday, Aug. 16 (6 to8 p.m.)

“We will take any sportsequipment that we can get,ideally stuff that is in reason-ably good condition,” Frasersaid. “We want to make sure itis useable and safe to wear.”

The used equipment sale is expectedto feature gear from a range of sports,including soccer, skiing, baseball, hockeyand lacrosse.

“The hope is we want to get as manysports and as much variety as possible,”

Fraser said. “The great thing is it is veryaffordable.”

Chris Wilson – a former Olympic wrest-ler who finished eighth at the BarcelonaOlympics – got the ball running for a New

West chapter of KidSport.Wilson was involved with

KidSport Tri-Cities, and hehelped Royal City residentsestablish KidSport NewWestminster.

Locals have stepped upto the plate, so much so thatWilson is no longer directlyinvolved with the group.

Wilson encourages resi-dents to support KidSport NewWest bydonating used equipment and attendingthe sale.

In the Tri-Cities sales, he’s seen parentsoutfit a child for hockey (including skatesand a helmet) for $100 – noting that the

same equipment would cost $600 or morein a store.

“It’s all really good-quality stuff,”Wilson said. “You can save a ton ofmoney.”

KidSport was started in 1993 and hashelped more than 110,000 kids play sports.Since its inception, more than $18 millionhas been raised for kids.

There are currently 177 volunteer com-munity committees in KidSport’s networkof 11 provincial and territorial chapters inCanada.

Each provincial and local chapter ofKidSport Canada has a confidential appli-cation process.

Grant information for each chapter isavailable by contacting the local KidSportchapter.

We usu-ally say that we“know” that animage must beout there some-where – and wecontinue to holdonto this belief.

Recently, aspart of a walkingtour, we showeda few imagesthat fit the abovecomments.

We had viewsof east Columbiathat showed theold Sappertontheatre as well asthe early site ofthe well-knownSpots Café.

We have had a theatreimage for a while, butnow we have a photo thatshows the streetscape. Wealso have a photo of theconfectionary store that,after a number of changes,became Spots Café.

Most of the time, photo-graphs are just snapshots,taken by someone out onthe street with a camera.Often such views areignored or forgotten, asthey are frequently uncap-tioned, and so they dis-appear. We are pleased tohave had the opportunityto see these.

Other photos con-cern a military groupmarching through New

Westminster’s downtownin 1915 while trainingprior to going overseas.The intriguing aspect ofthese images is that theyclearly show a remark-able view of lower EighthStreet with all its buildingson the east side of the roadas they line the street upthe hill from Columbia.

Others views showpart of the 700 block ofColumbia Street, a coupleof streetcars and even a“blue funnel” jitney, anearly form of automobiletransport – all this in a fewsmall snaps taken, mostlikely, by someone drawn

to the locationby the march-ing soldiers.

A fewyears ago,we were ableto acquire ahard-to-findview of St.Peter’s church– not the cur-rent one butrather theone that usedto stand halfa block upBlackwoodStreet aboveColumbia.The photowe got showshow domin-

ant this church was andeven includes a streetcaras well as the gas stationthat was on the ColumbiaStreet corner.

One of the most excitingimages to come our wayin recent years concerns afuneral. For now, we willnot identify the deceasedexcept to say that we haveused the photo on tourswith a full description ofits military aspects.

We now have a set ofphotos from church to

cemetery, including a riflesquad firing a salute overa flower-covered grave.Truly wonderful images.

These are just a fewexamples of what can befound – that do sometimesturn up – or as we saidearlier, those that we “justknow” must be out theresomewhere.

Basketball dream comes trueNot every story has a

perfect ending, but AlishaRoberts still has a chap-ter or two to write in herchosen sport of basketballbefore she’s through.

Roberts ended herhigh school career at YorkHouse Girls’ School witha runner-up finish at theB.C. high school AAAgirls’ basketball champi-onships after sharing inback-to-back provincialtitles at the AA level.

It wasn’t the finish toa stellar five-year highschool basketball careerthat the perennial provin-cal team player was hop-ing for. But it is a result sheunquestioningly accepts.

“It’s made me workthat much harder. I don’tever want to feel thatway again,” said Roberts,who grew up in theEdmonds area of Burnabyand attended StrideCommunity School.

“We always knew shehad some real potential.She has a wonderful fam-ily. Basketball was herlife from the first,” saidBurnaby school districthearing resource teach-er Bev McKenna, whoworked with Robertsat Stride when she firstentered the school inkindergarten through toGrade 7.

Basketball was indeedRobert’s passion and the17-year-old, first-teamAAA provincial all-starpoint guard parlayedthat talent into an athleticscholarship to PepperdineUniversity in Malibu,California earlier thisyear.

“Playing Division 1basketball has been mydream. It’s something I’vealways wanted to do,”said Roberts.

“I’m not going to be thebest player on the team,and I know that, but I’mreally going to work hardand to prove that (theywere right in signing me).If you look at my stats,I’ve always been like that.If I need to score, I will.It’s never been about me.If we have more points atthe end of the game, I’mhappy.”

Happiness to Robertshas always been in theshape of a round ball anda cylinder ever since shecan remember.

“I think I was bornwith a ball in my hand,”quipped Roberts. “Itwas definitely my father(Norm). I think he encour-aged all of us. It’s always

been basketball for me. Ijust love it. It was reallyawesome growing up withmy dad as a coach. He ismy coach for-ever.”

W h e nshe was stilltoo young toplay, Alishawould join herfather and hertwo older sis-ters, Lisa andNorma Jean,for regularshoot-aroundsat Eastburnc o m m u n i t ycentre.

“I was threeyears old.I would bewatching. Heshowed mehow to do alayup and I’d just practicefor hours and hours andhours. I loved it – watch-ing my sisters. Yes, I wasdefinitely watching thegame, seeing what othersdo and learning from it.

Then I’d go and practiceby myself,” Alisha added.

She tagged alongwith her sisters to New

WestminsterS e c o n d a r ySchool, whereboth girls cap-tained theirr e s p e c t i v evarsity girls’teams.

“I thinkthat’s how Icame to lovethe game somuch, bywatching mysisters play-ing, and beingaround themand the team. Iloved the teamatmosphere,”Alisha said.

At one prac-tice, when a player gotinjured, the New Westhigh school coach askedAlisha if she would liketo step in and be the 10thplayer on the floor. Shejumped at the chance.

“I was so excited.”For the next three years,

the then-Grade 5 studentshared a spot on the benchand was a regular par-ticipant in the pre-gamewarmups with the highschool girls’ team beforeevery game.

“Basketball never getsold for me – the teamhuddles before the game,bonding on road trips, get-ting to know everyone andbecoming a close family.It sounds clichéd, but (theYork House team) was theclosest I’ve ever been inmy life,” she said.

Roberts was the sixthplayer off the bench for the2009 York House squadalthough still in Grade 9.

The following year, shestarted at point guard forthe Tigers and helped YorkHouse to its first of twostraight B.C. AA titles.

“I still remember thefeeling of winning thatgame. It was unmatched,”

New Westminster trackand field athletes led themedal parade for Zone 4 atthe B.C. Summer Games inSurrey.

Raquel Tjernagel wonboth the girls’ 200- and300-metre sprints, whilealso earning a second-placemedal with the Fraser RiverDelta zone 4x400m relayteam.

Nina Schultz was afour-medal-winning ath-lete from the Royal City.Schultz won silver medalsin the girls’ triple jump and80m hurdles.

Schultz also earned abronze medal in the 300mhurdles and in the zonegirls’ 4x100m relay.

Carly Harder earned agold medal in equestrian,winning the Division Dgirls/boys vaulting canter.

The Zone 4 boys’ soc-cer team, including NewWestminster ’s DusanMitrovic and NikolasPapakyriakopoulos, alsocame away with a goldmedal.

New West lacrosse play-ers earned bronze medalsin both box and field gamesat the Games.

The New West-dominat-ed team just missed out ona berth in the final, losing8-7 in overtime to even-tual gold medallist FraserValley in the semifinal.

Connor Frost scored thegame-winning goal for theFraser Valley on his goodfriend Lund-Murray in OT.

The two 15-year-oldboys were teammates ona B.C. Mainland team thatplaced third overall at anAll-Canada recruitmenttournament in Oshawa,Ont. earlier this month.

In the indoor boxlacrosse consolation final,Brent Dhandwar, SeanFitzsimmons, PrestonLupul, Tommy Robertson,Connor Robinson andMitchell Stokes also placedthird at the Games.

The Fraser River Deltazone team won a total of11 gold medals to finishfourth overall in aggregatemedal standings.

Vancouver Island-Central Coast topped theGames’ medal board with38 gold and 101 total med-als.

Fraser Valley was run-ner-up with 94 medals.


Canada juniors winthree-nation fieldhockey tourney

The Bissett family of New Westminster scored eightgoals between them in Canada’s five wins at a threenation junior men’s field hockey tournament at EricHamber Field from July 15 to 23.

Twins Matthew and Stephen Bissett scored two goalsapiece in Canada’s opening 9-2 victory over the UnitedStates. Younger brother Brenden also tallied a singlemarker in the one-sided opening-day win for the juniornationals.

Matthew, 21, who scored four times in Canada’s six-game schedule, also tallied single goals in Canada’s 4-1win over Chile on July 17 and in a 3-1 victory over theSouth American nation on the final day of the competi-tion. Stephen scored the game-winning tally in the 3-1win over Chile, capping a three-goal comeback win inthe match.

Canada finished on top of the three-team tourney witha 5-1-0 record. The junior national team’s only loss in thecompetition was a 3-0 defeat to the Americans on July 18.An 18-man roster will be named on Friday (after Recorddeadlines) in readiness for the junior Pan Americanchampionships to be played in Mexico Sept. 10 to 23.

The New WestminsterSalmonbellies failed toclose out their B.C. JuniorLacrosse League best-of-five semifinal series withthe Delta Islanders, losingGame 3 by a 14-4 scorelinein Ladner on Wednesday.

Delta’s Mike Mallorydid most of the damagefor the regular season run-ner-up club, scoring sevengoals in a nine-point effort,including four markers ina four-minute span earlyin the middle period that

effectively broke the backof the junior ’Bellies.

But come what may, Roberts says shewill never forget her roots or where shecame from.

“I grew up here, and I’m still friendswith people here. I went to Stride. It’s asmuch a comfort level, we’re from the sameplace. But Burnaby is home for me. I’velived in the same place since I was born.No matter what, Burnaby is home for me,”she said.

B.C. White at the under-18 national women’s field hockey championships in Calgary onSunday.

Team White, one of three provincial teams from B.C. entered in the junior nationals,defeated B.C. Yellow 4-1 in the consolation final. Colbourne and company lost to even-tual national champion B.C. Blue 4-1 in the semifinals. B.C. Blue defeated Ontario by asimilar 4-1 score in the gold-medal final, also played on Sunday.

Colbourne scored two goals in a lop-sided win over Alberta’s u-16 team during thefive-day tournament. Team White finished the round-robin portion of the tournament insecond place to Ontario in Pool B.

B.C. Blue topped Pool A with a 4-0-0 record. Team Yellow placed ahead of Alberta totake second place in pool play.
