“Volunteers founded Plunket in 1907 to ‘help the mothers and save the babies’ and more than a century later, volunteers are still at the heart of our services for families,” Plunket New Zealand’s acting president Christine Lake said.

“National Volunteer Week is a chance for us to say thank you to all those who make time and give their individual skills to help families in their local communities, this week and every week.”

She said thousands of people across the country give back to their local communities by volunteering for Plunket.

“Today, there is great diversity in how volunteers are giving their time – people are just as likely to run a local Plunket Facebook page or produce an e-newsletter as staff a Plunket family centre.”

Ms Lake said many of Plunket’s volunteer-run services come from the local community.

The latest Infometrics Quarterly Economic Monitor reported Selwyn's GDP grew by 3.6% in the year to March 2016 - well ahead of Canterbury average of 0.8% and the New Zealand average of 2.3%. Selwyn's GDP had an estimated value of $1.8 billion.

"Selwyn is bucking the trend that is occurring in other parts of Canterbury where a tapering off of residential rebuilding work and losses in the dairy sector are constraining growth," Infometrics senior economist Benje Patterson said.

"In contrast, Selwyn is reaping the benefits of expanding industrial zones and logistical infrastructure within its district boundaries to the south of Christchurch."

The report indicated Selwyn's dairy payout for the 2015-16 season was expected to around $275 million, $16.6 million lower than the previous season.

"At this level, most dairy farmers will be running below their break-even point,” Mr Patterson said.

“Given these losses, dairy farmers

will have to keep relying heavily on bank credit lines and will continue displaying cautious spending behaviour."

Retail trade is also booming in Selwyn, up by 9.3% on the previous year. Canterbury retail trade grew by 1.2% and national trade grew by 2.8%.

Retail trade figures are sourced from Marketview from electronic card spending and show that $66 million was spent in Selwyn in the January-March 2016 period.

Local accommodation providers have also had a busy year with the number of guest nights stayed in Selwyn increasing by 11% for the financial year. Visitors stayed a total of 96,608 nights in Selwyn in this period, up from 87,282 in the previous year.

The report cited the growth was due to a sharp increases in international visitor numbers combined with an increase in domestic tourism.

International migration in Selwyn also jumped by 76% with 367 new international migrants moving to the district in the year to March 2016,

Selwyn is experiencing a growth in visitor numbers as a result of increases to both international and domestic tourists.

up from 203 arrivals for the year to March 2015.

Residential building consent numbers for the year were unchanged from the previous year, however, the value of non-residential construction consents increased by 13%, with consents

reaching an estimated value of $109 million.

Unemployment continues to be low in the district at 2.1%, with the national unemployment rate for the year to March 2016 5.7% and for Canterbury 3.5%.

It will also form part of the wider walking and cycling network being developed for Lincoln residents in the area.

The 45km trail runs from Shands Road in Hornby, via Prebbleton, Lincoln, Greenpark, Motukarara, Kaituna, Birdlings Flat, Catons Bay to Little River.

The trail is the initiative of the Christchurch-Little River Rail Trail Trust and has included Ngai Tahu and the Wairewa Runanga, the Department of Conservation, Environment Canterbury, Christchurch City Council and Selwyn District Council all cooperating in its development and construction through its various stages from Christchurch to Little River.

The new pathway south of Lincoln will be constructed by Selwyn District Council on behalf of the Trust.

Council's transportation asset manager Andrew Mazey said the new link can be constructed as a result of agreements between council and local land owners to establish pathways alongside the river.

"The new connecting path will offer a safe off-road route for cyclists and will be an attractive part of the Rail Trail.

“The pathway will avoid cyclists having to use a busy section of road along Edward Street and Ellesmere Road south to where the Rail Trail currently connects to River Road.

“Further pathways in the surrounding area are planned as new subdivisions are developed over time and these new pathways could also be used by the Rail Trail cyclists and local residents,” Mr Mazey said.

Chair of the Christchurch Little River Rail Trail Trust Don Babe said the trustees were very pleased with the progress council made to procure the last land access agreement required to create a grade 2 path from Christchurch to Little River.

"When the path is completed through this area the entire length of the trail will either be off road or on very quiet country roads, safe for riders aged from 8 to 80 years."

Mr Babe said the completely flat

Rail Trail link to be developedConstruction of an important off road link for the Little River Rail Trail south of Lincoln is scheduled to begin late this year.

trail offers unique opportunities to pass through working farms, nature reserves and alongside and across Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere. "It is pleasing to see this access made safer for all users by the negotiation of this land access agreement.

"Having the trail complete will mean the trust can concentrate on promotional work which is likely to bring economic gains to the areas it passes through,

including the towns of Prebbleton and Lincoln," he said.

The Selwyn District Council has also recently purchased a strategic area of land in Lincoln near the new Rail Trail path.

The land is next to Ellesmere Road and it allows the stormwater and drainage network to continue to be upgraded to cater for Lincoln's current and future growth.

The new Rail Trail link will follow the L2 River downstream south of Lincoln, through the stormwater wetlands, and connecting to the Rail Trail via Moirs Lane.

The tramp was one of the outdoor activities for the school’s William Pike Challenge and on the trek the students had to work together has a team to cross several rivers.

For many of the students it was their first outdoor overnight tramp and during the stay they had a chance to learn basic hazard identification and survival skills

“Even though the tramp was

fantastic, it took a lot of planning for our learners,” teacher aide Rita Spadoni said.

“They all had to collaborate as what to take in their kit, had to agree on a menu, source their equipment and make sure their pack wasn’t too heavy to carry.

“Many of the students said it was the best thing they had done this year.”

Surviving the wildernessWilderness survival skills were on the agenda for West Melton School year 7 and 8 students on a recent tramp to Hawdon Hut is in the Arthur’s Pass National Park.

West Melton School students have been spending time to help develop the Kowhai Sanctuary near their school.

To help celebrate Arbor Day students were asked to plant Kowhai seeds.

Teacher aide Rita Spadoni said this year our Enviro focus has been on the Kowhai tree and our links to the Kowhai Sanctuary on Thompsons Rd.

“Our Enviro team snipped the seeds at the end, to assist with germination, then each community received potting mix, small pots and the prepared Kowhai seeds.

West Melton School’s senior and junior cross-country champions were recently presented with their cups following the school’s cross-country event earlier this year. Many of the runners have gone on to higher honours, with top placings in the recent Lincoln Zone Cross-country championships at Halswell Quarry. Led by Hannah Buckley, a senior lecturer at Lincoln, the projects’ research team has been investigating the genetic and morphological variation within one of New Zealand’s endemic plant species, Pingao.

Otherwise known as pikao, golden sand sedge or Ficinia spiralis, the grass is one of two main sand-binding plants in New Zealand and plays an essential role in the coastal ecosystem.

Ms Buckley said it is considered a taonga (treasure) by Maori because it is one of four native plants used for traditional weaving, and the only one that needs no colour enhancement.

“The species is under threat from burning, grazing, coastal development, competition with invasive species and being trampled by both animals and people.”

The four main organisations working together on the pingao project are Te Taumutu Runanga, Ngati Hinewaka, Lincoln University and Victoria University of Wellington.

The research team has been investigating different aspects of pingao ecology and the ways people have

engaged with the plant. Ms Buckley said the team are trying

to find links between them and the environment to explain the variation observed among pingao populations across New Zealand.

Ms Buckley says two workshops were held in 2014 to discuss the direction of the project and to educate everyone involved on all the different aspects of pingao ecological and cultural importance.

“As 2016 is the final year of the currently-funded project, one last workshop was held to enable everyone involved to weave with pingao from around New Zealand.

“Some of the preliminary findings from the scientific research were presented and future directions for the project were discussed.

“The team’s main goal now is to raise more funding to continue research into the importance of genetic variation in this species for reversing its population decline and ensuring sustainable weaving supply into the future.”

Senior Lecturer in Ecology at Lincoln Dr Tim Curran said the workshop was

Avenue for remembranceThe project started in July 2014 with

the planting of an oak to mark 100 years since the outbreak of the war and last year another oak was planted to recognise the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign.

“When you drive around Selwyn you will see oak trees planted right across the district and many of these will have been planted by returning soldiers, or their families, with acorns taken from Gallipoli as was the case with the Bridge of Remembrance oak.

“That oak came from an acorn sent back to his family in Malvern by Lieutenant Douglas Deans.”

Mrs Wheeler said this year’s Battle of the Somme service will be dedicated to four local men who lost their lives during the battle and a fifth who succumbed to his injuries sustained in the Gallipoli campaign the year before.

Those men are: Arthur Compton, Ernest Piner, Frank Willis, Thomas McCahon and Ernest Sleeman. Their names along with the other 15 men who lost their lives during the war are inscribed on Sheffield cenotaph.

“Concrete crosses naming one of the fallen will be placed alongside each of the 20 oak trees which will

form an avenue of remembrance along Tramway Road opposite the cenotaph,” Mrs Wheeler said.

Last year two flagpoles were erected at the cenotaph to enable both the New Zealand and Australian flags to be flown at the services.

The WW100 Gallipoli Oak Tree Project committee is inviting all Selwyn residents to attend the service which will be held at the Sheffield cenotaph on Friday, July 1 starting at 2pm.

The service will feature a parade led by a piper and including children from Sheffield School, followed by an afternoon tea at the school.

However, in the end Lincoln, had too much fire power, running away with the match 61-49.

Lincoln fielded a side which was missing a number of senior players and Rolleston took advantage, keeping the game close in the first half, trailing by two goals at the end of the first quarter and went into the third quarter only four points adrift.

In the third quarter Lincoln took

charge, with upcoming youngster Tyler Rollo helping Lincoln dominate the midcourt following her move to wing attack from goal attack for the last two quarters.

Courtney Cramond moved back into her more accustomed goal attack role and combined with the ever reliable Hannah Wilson at goal shoot to push Lincoln out to a 10 goal advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Rolleston was unable to peg the differential back in the final quarter despite the accurate shooting of Lauren Robb and the defensive work of Josephine Turnbull and Bubba Taurua who normally fills an offensive role.

Meanwhile, Greenpark moved into a share of second place with Rolleston by thumping Halswell 70-37 and Broadfield continued its revival with a 63-24 win over Southbridge.

Lincoln too strong for RollestonRolleston pushed champions Lincoln for most of their top of the table clash in the Ellesmere premier netball competition on Saturday.

Tyler Rollo stood out for Lincoln in its win over Rolleston at the Lincoln Events Centre.

Fresh from beating Southbridge in the final of the Canterbury Country competition the previous weekend the Waihora side was brought back to reality by Lincoln on Saturday afternoon.

Lincoln proved too strong for Waihora, the reigning Ellesmere champions, with a 22-17 win on home turf, to move it into second place on the points table after four matches.

Southbridge retained its unbeaten run in the Ellesmere competition with a 19-6 win over Darfield to move six points clear at the top of the table.

West Melton recorded its second win of the competition with a close fought 25-23 victory over Hornby, while the Burnham Dunsandel Irwell combined side downed Prebbleton 24-20 to retain its place in the top five.

Coaches Terry Dalton, Michael Wilson and Kahu Carey have named their squad which features 10 players from the Waihora side which beat Southbridge to clinch the Canterbury Country title recently.

Southbridge, which also lost to Waihora in the final of the Ellesmere senior competition last season, had six of its players named in the 26-man squad.

Manager Sean Taiaroa said two players, Max Lum of Southbridge and Darfield’s Harry Pankhurst, weren’t considered due to unavailability.

Thinking of

Sub dividingyour property?

PlanningIt’s important to look at the conditions

you have on your property before beginning planting, because it’s easier to work with the natural patterns of your land than against them. Study air flow, water flow, orientation to the sun, and where the prevailing winds and frost come from.

A slope is a great thing to have in an orchard, because it allows cold air to run downhill, and provides frost-free spots at the upper end.

Wet patches and very dry spots on your land are not necessarily a bad thing: you just need to put the right

plants in the right places. Hazelnuts, for example, like a good sharp winter chill, so a hollow that harbours frost is just the right place for them.

Wet areas, particularly those rich in nutrients like the far end of your septic tank leach field, are great for plums. Citrus also like high nutrients but don’t like wet feet. Dry, windy areas are ideal for trees that are prone to fungal and bacterial rots, so these areas can house nectarines, peaches and walnuts.Planting and maintenance

The layout of your orchard can be traditional rows, or something completely different. Rows can be

fine, especially if you are only growing a limited range of fruit trees, but it can create large gaps between plants which may need a tractor for grass and weed control.

Consider not using a tractor in the orchard to avoid soil compaction and reliance on fossil fuels. Instead consider a food forest where planting is very mixed, and is based on the best microclimate for the species involved.

A minimum space of four to five metres between trees should be allowed, and large spreading trees like walnuts should be at least 25 metres apart.

Thinking about the mature height of each tree is also important. Tall trees need to be positioned so they don’t shade other trees.

To minimise grass and weed growth, use heavy mulching with organic material (a mixture of lawn clippings and dry leaves is good), applied during the wettest possible conditions to enhance soil moisture retention.

Plant a ‘herbal ley’ which includes plantain, red clover, chicory, yarrow etc for their nutritive value; and companion planting, for example dahlias are helpful near apple trees because they harbour earwigs, which eat codlin

Planning and planting an orchardby Judy McDonald

Establishing an orchard on your lifestyle block can involve a good deal of work, and sometimes money, so it’s worth doing some careful planning before taking spade to soil. If you get it right, it will reward you for decades with home-grown fruit and nuts.

Apples are a reliable tree to have in any orchard. Plant a variety of apples that are good to cook with and ones that are great to eat straight from the tree.

moth caterpillars. The final word on the subject of grass

and weeds is don’t panic. Grasses only grow to a certain height and then fall over in autumn. As long as you clear around young trees and avoid fire hazards, they won’t do much damage to your orchard.

Water conservation in the orchard is very important, especially if you don’t have a stream or bore available and are relying on rainwater.

It’s very helpful to have storage tanks located as close to the top of your slope as possible. You can also use the ancient technique of building swales

which is essentially small ditches like miniature terraces which retain water on the slope. And mulch heavily with organic matter to minimise evaporation from the soil.

Always investigate what cultivars grow well in your area before planting. For example, you may like Golden Queen peaches, but they may not do well on your property while another type of peach will thrive.

Contact your local branch of the Tree Crops Association to get information on appropriate cultivars for your area, and detailed advice on care for each type of tree.

An orchard can add an array of colours to your lifestyle block in the spring.

Growing berries means an abundance of tasty treats, but only if you put nets on them to make sure the birds don’t get there first.

Growing grapes can be successful in some parts of Selwyn as certain varieties like free draining stony soils.

Build & Renovate

Here are some options to consider when it comes to planning your new home build.Architect or designer-managed

If you are using a registered architect to custom-design your home, they will probably offer a full service which includes managing the project. In fact, they will probably prefer this option.

If the plans are being drawn by an architectural designer or an architectural draughtsperson, they may also offer this service.

Keeping on the architect/designer means paying for their services and you may be tempted to stop using them once the plans are drawn to make some savings. This could prove to be false economy.

The plans are only written instructions. Are you confident that you will be able to interpret them when the builder asks a question about them? If they are interpreted incorrectly, there could be costly mistakes, and it may not be clear who is liable for the costs once the architect has stepped away from the project.

Company-managedWhen you use a group housing

company, or kitset/pre-built home, the price usually includes the services of a project manager.

Often you are buying the section, plans and building services as part of the package and don’t have to organise any of this yourself. But it doesn’t mean stepping away and not taking any interest in the project.Builder-managed

When you hire a builder on a full contract, depending on what is in the terms of the contract, they can manage everything from getting a designer, hiring the subcontractors, liaising with you on variations and getting materials on site.

Or, you might have a hybrid arrangement where you use an architect or designer to do the plans and have an overview of the entire project, as well as monitor the budget and progress payments, but the builder takes on the hiring, and acquiring of materials and organising inspections.

The responsibilities need to be clearly spelt out in the contract.

Managing your house-building projectArticle supplied by www.consumerbuild.org.nz

When planning your new home there is much to think about in terms of managing the building project.

Other professionalsOther professionals, like quantity

surveyors, sometimes take on the project management task. This can happen by default, for example, when the project manager you engaged lets you down.Project management companies

There are companies that specialise in providing project management services for building construction.

They are usually involved in apartments or commercial sites but often manage ordinary home-building

where the house is a complicated design or at the expensive end of the market. Or they get called upon by busy people who want someone to take the whole project off their hands.

Most project management companies are happy to be approached and discuss your new house with you.

Small firms, or people working alone, also offer their services as project managers.

You will pay a fee for their services. Check with the individual companies and managers to see how their fees

compare to those of the architect, or the margin you pay the builder to manage the project. But, as with any project management, what you pay in fees can often be saved by avoiding the expensive mistakes on a badly-managed building site.

Look under Project Management or Building Consultants in the Yellow Pages to find names of project management companies and individuals.

BRANZ Accredited AdvisersThe Building Research Association of

New Zealand (BRANZ) has accredited Accredited Advisers who can manage a house-building project.

They may be employed to manage residential house construction, including those needing special features, (for example, a home that has to accommodate people with disabilities).

BRANZ Accredited Advisers are independent, professional building consultants.

They will visit the building site, and advise or report accordingly. Some are qualified in dispute resolution procedures, including mediation and arbitration. They also provide the following services:• Maintenance management reports.• Final inspections for new buildings.

• Advice on solving technical problems.• Pre-purchase or pre-sale reports.• You negotiate a fee with an accredited

adviser and decide in the contract how much of the project you want them to manage.BRANZ can provide you with

more information about using accredited advisers.

Bath and shower maintenance Article supplied by Consumer NZ

If left unchecked damaged and or cracked sealing around fixtures can cause serious water damage to walls, floors and cabinetry.

The damage may not be obvious until it has become serious. If water has got in behind the fixture, seek professional advice. Otherwise, replace the damaged seal.

Damaged or scratched wall or shower linings can cause leaks, reduce the life of the linings and lead to water getting into the pre-finished hardboard sheets or framing.

Damaged shower wall linings should be repaired as soon as possible. Significant damage may require replacement of the whole lining. The type of repair will depend on the wall material.

Light scratches on acrylic shower wall panels can be repaired. Some manufacturers provide repair kits for their products. If a repair kit is not available, check with the manufacturer for other solutions.

Wet areas in your home need to be properly maintained to prevent serious problems ensuing.

Small scratches on acrylic can be repaired by sanding with fine wet and dry sandpaper, then bringing the shine back with a mild abrasive such as Brasso. Check with the manufacturer and test on a small less visible area first.

Worn or cracked bath, toilet and basin surfaces can reduce the life of the fixture and could lead to leaks.

Repairs depend on the type of surface. Porcelain on steel can be sanded, cleaned and repainted. Major resurfacing can be done by a specialist re-coater.

For acrylic baths, car polish will smooth minor scratches. For fibreglass fixtures, contact the manufacturer.

Bath enamel can be repaired temporarily with clear nail polish. For

more permanent repairs you should use an epoxy resin kit. These are available from hardware shops or plumbing manufacturers.

Cracked or broken porcelain basins and toilets should be replaced as leaking and dirt caught in the cracks could be a potential health hazard.

Rust spots on enamel baths can be removed with rust converter, which converts rust to a hard black paintable surface.

Remove loose flakes first. The surface can then be repainted with suitable enamel paint.

If rusting is extensive, the bath can be resurfaced by a professional. This can be done either on-site (which can be messy and cause damage to wall linings, and may not be as effective at

removing all the enamel) or the bath can be taken away.

If you use specialised equipment in the bathroom, such as hoists or shower chairs, these should be regularly checked to ensure they are safe.

If the equipment was funded through ACC or Enable, they are responsible for maintaining and repairing it. Otherwise refer to the manufacturer’s instructions on maintenance.

Gardening

Do• Plant more roses. Winter is an ideal

time to plant. More roses arrive in garden centres in early spring.

• Mix compost and fertiliser into the soil at planting time. For each rose bush, dig a generous planting hole and mix through a bucketful of compost, plus slow- release fertiliser or well-composted animal manure.

• Trim any damaged roots, then soak the roots in a bucket of water while you prepare the ground. (For bare root roses only).

• Trim new bush roses at planting time. These have often been trimmed mechanically. Cut each branch near the top, just above a bud.

• Lay organic mulch under roses to retain moisture and prevent weed growth.

• Prune roses in winter, all except old-fashioned roses that flower only once a year in early summer. These roses should be pruned immediately after flowering (if at all) to give new flowering wood time to grow. Wait until August in cold climates.

• Use clean sharp secateurs.• Cut on an angle, about 5mm above

a bud facing in a direction you want the bush to grow. Angle the cut away from the bud to prevent water running into it.

• Wear gloves when pruning, preferably long ones to protect your arms.

• Clean away all leaf debris from under the roses. This is a refuge for pests and diseases.

• Spray after pruning with a copper spray mixed with spraying oil to minimise disease problems in summer.

Caring for roses in the winter monthsArticle supplied by www.gogardening.co.nz

Six months from now, roses will be charming us with their beauty and fragrance. They’ll be all the more intoxicating if we pamper them a little over the next few months.

Don’t• Don’t plant roses in shade.• Don’t plant roses in highly sheltered

places where warm humid air makes life too cosy for pests and diseases.

• Don’t plant in soil where roses have grown previously. Find a new planting site or dig a large hole and backfill with fresh soil.

• Don’t forget to remove the packaging before you plant your rose.

• Don’t prune old-fashioned roses unless they are in the way, damaged or diseased. Ideally prune after flowering to avoid cutting off next years blooms.

• Don’t be fussy when pruning Flower Carpet Roses. Just trim them with the hedge sheers.

• Don’t put diseased material on the compost heap.

• Don’t stress! You can’t kill a rose by pruning it.

How to prune a bush rose• Remove all dead or decaying wood.• Cut off any canes (branches) that

are in the way, rubbing against each other or growing towards the centre of the bush.

• Shorten the remaining canes, cutting back to an outward facing bud.

Mrs Jenny Gallagher of Kirwee

was one of two Selwyn residents to

receive a Queen’s Service Medal, with

Prebbleton’s Mrs Selma Scott receiving

hers for her work with the Pacific

Island community.

As a strong believer in grassroots

community involvement Mrs Gallagher

said she was shocked but a “little

chuffed” to receive the letter from

Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae

informing her of her award for services

to the community.

“I think Dad would be proud as he

was the one who really got me involved

in community service,” she said.

Her father, Willie Henderson, was

a long time member and president

and treasurer of the Courtenay A&P

Association, while her grandfather

Davey ‘JD’ Henderson was a also a

president of the association and chair

of the Paparoa County Council, part of

which was merged to form the Selwyn

District Council.

Mrs Gallagher said, as well as

the family influences, community

involvement was just a part of living in

small rural communities like Halkett

and Kirwee.

“When there was something on or

something to do, whether it be an A&P

Show, marking a school centennial or

just a working bee at the domain, the

whole community came along.

“As children that was just a normal

part of our lives and that sense of

community has stayed with me.”

That passion for grassroots

community involvement came to the

fore last year when a Selwyn District

Council representation review initially

recommended doing away with the

Malvern Community Board of which she

was into to her second term as chair.

at the 2016 Canterbury

Heritage Awards for

their work in restoring

The homestead was

of the original home and

was designed by architect

style.The building sustained

significant damage in the

in 2010 and was initially

targeted for demolition.

However, in 2012 the century

old building was purchased by

Bernice and Brian Cribb, deer

farmers from Woodstock,

restoration.

According to the citation

which accompanied their

“with incredible foresight
