The decision to progress the projects to the tender stage is to allow council and the local communities to get a more accurate cost of the new buildings.

Currently the two projects are estimated to cost around $10 million in total, $3.2m for Dunsandel and $6.6m for West Melton, with funding to come from a number of sources including reserve development contributions, fundraising and council grants of 10% of the cost of each project.

“The (Dunsandel) steering committee has a strong view that a community based tender will be lodged which will deliver an attractive price thus providing a solution to the possible funding issues that potentially face the project,” council’s property and commercial manager Douglas Marshall said.

West Melton’s needs for a new community centre arose through the huge growth in the townships’ population with the old community hall deemed inadequate for the predicted population growth.

Community centres to go aheadby Kent Caddick

Two new community centres for West Melton and Dunsandel have been given the green light by the Selwyn District Council to go out to tender.

It was decided to add sporting facilities, including a full size indoor court stadium to the development which saw the cost rise from an estimated $3.5m which had been signalled in council’s 2012-22 Long Term Plan.

In the 2015-2025 LTP the cost of the West Melton project had increased to just on $5.5m due to design changes which among other things meant replacing the West Melton Domain’s

tennis courts to make way for the centre. The cost is now estimated to be $6.6m.

“The reason for the difference relates to the larger than anticipated stadium and additional meeting rooms,” Mr Marshall said.

“Although the cost is $1.1m over budget, the increase in rating base has meant the rate to fund the project is effectively the same as per the LTP.”

At $299 the Earlybird Mt Hutt Pass is $450 cheaper than the equivalent pass in 2015 and is aimed at not only locals but also international visitors.

Mt Hutt, owned by NZSki, recently won the title of New Zealand’s best ski resort at the World Ski Awards.

NZSki Chairman Sir John Davies said Australian skiers and snowboarders heading across the Tasman for a winter holiday can also access the deals.

“We’ve been listening to that customer feedback, so we hope the new prices will stimulate the Canterbury market so we can share Mt Hutt and its fantastic products with our local communities.

NZSki CEO Paul Anderson said the change to pass prices and a key Learn to Ski package aimed to make a season pass affordable for skiers who may have stopped due to cost constraints.

“We’re thrilled to be in a position to offer this fantastic season pass price. We know there are lots of people who have moved to Canterbury recently who haven’t yet experienced the fun of snowsports. “

The booklet, ‘Are you worried someone is thinking of suicide? Advice for families, whanau and friends’, is available to download from the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) website, www.mentalhealth.org.nz.

MHF chief executive Judi Clements said we all have a role to play in preventing suicide.

“Family and friends are often the first to notice when something is wrong, and we often hear that people in that situation are worried about saying the wrong thing and don’t know where to go for help.

“This resource will guide families, whanau and friends to identify warning signs, know who is most at risk, and find the right help and support when someone is in distress.”

The resource provides readers with tips and advice about what to say and when to say it, as well as building a support network and looking after yourself while caring for someone else.

“You don’t have to have all the answers,” Ms Clements said.

“It’s fine to say ‘I don’t really know what to do, but I do know we need some help.’ Ask the person what they need,

Under the restrictions no outdoor fires can be lit in the district, while the burning of crop stubble is also not allowed.

Gas barbeques with a high pressure water source at hand are allowed but not charcoal barbeques. Fires are also not permitted in Selwyn District Council reserves.

During a prohibited fire season all fire

Total fire ban for Selwyn districtSoaring temperatures and windy conditions have led the Selwyn District Council to introduce a prohibited fire season for the district.

The introduction of a prohibited fire season will help to prevent fires like this one near Rolleston last summer.

Reducing fire riskYou can help to reduce the fire risk, and make sure that fire services can quickly access

your property to put out a fire if one does start, by:• Avoiding operating lawn mowers or other machinery during hot weather as sparks can

easily ignite in these conditions, and waiting until the weather is cooler to mow lawns or operate machinery. If you do need to use machinery or a lawn mower, having a source of water nearby for fire firefighting is advisable as a precaution.

• Regularly checking and maintaining machinery and equipment so it is safe to operate.• Disposing of ashes from an indoor fire safely in a metal container and use

approved incinerators.• Keeping a hose connected that can reach round the house.• Storing firewood and other flammable materials away from the house.• Keeping grass away from under hedges.• In rural areas keep a clear space between your house and buildings and vegetation

like trees, shrubs and long grass to act as a fire break. Keep this space watered and green if possible or construct it from non- flammable material like paving stones.

• Make sure your property number is easy to see and that it has a clear access way four metres wide and high so that fire services can easily access your property if needed.

permits previously issued by the council have been cancelled.

The district's Principal Rural Fire Officer Douglas Marshall said that vegetation in the district is now very dry and a prohibited fire season has been introduced to help ensure that the risk of fires breaking out is minimised.

"Selwyn has been experiencing hot,

dry weather along with strong winds and this provides ideal conditions for fires to spread quickly."

Mr Marshall said people need to be very vigilant in this weather to avoid any activities that could start a fire.

"We would discourage people from mowing the lawn or operating machinery during the heat of the day

as sparks can easily ignite in the heat, and instead carry out these activities when it is cooler. Letting off fireworks is also not allowed in the current conditions."

Mr Marshall said council will be reviewing the prohibited fire season status regularly and will lift restrictions as soon as it is considered safe to do so.

It is intended to create the extra capacity by semester one next year.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor of academic quality and student experience, Professor Sheelagh Matear, said the University is working hard to make sure any student who wants to stay on campus can be accommodated.

“It is part of the ‘Lincoln experience’ to be on campus with other students, and more students than ever are saying they want to be here.”

She said it is positive having such demand but it is a challenge to meet the logistics of it.

However she is confident the University’s plan, coupled with other efforts already underway to house students, will mean that the University can now make offers of accommodation to more students.

Professor Matear said student

applications are at a high level for this stage of the year with students able to indicate earlier, after an enrolment system change, they want accommodation.

“Being relocatable, the buildings can be re-purposed when a more permanent solution to future accommodation needs is decided, which is being worked on.”

The accommodation features 30 beds in six houses, which will be constructed off-site.

There will also be two 10-bed student accommodation blocks, also relocatable, which will be placed in existing accommodation zones on campus

Options to upgrade the University’s Union Annex to add 15 beds to the overall capacity are also being explored.

Beaumont Park is being developed by McConnell Property and the first two homes in the subdivision have been built by local builder, BT Builders.

The homes at 10 and 12 Park Lane both include four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a double garage and one has already been snapped up, while the other is currently on the market for sale through real estate agency Harcourts.

When completed, there will be 96 homes at Beaumont Park, with sections

ranging from 600sqm to 892sqm and starting from $173,900 to $187,500. Land and build packages are available through several builders.

Demand for the subdivision has been strong, with 49 sites in the first and second stages of the development receiving their section titles by Selwyn District Council earlier this year. In stages three and four, over half of the sections are already sold or under offer.

Seven Selwyn residents, including Mayor Kelvin Coe and councillor Nigel Barnett, visited Coventry, which is in New England, in October.

The trip was organised by Selwyn District Council's Sister City Committee. Participants were hosted by locals in Coventry and paid for accommodation and other expenses themselves.

Selwyn Sister City chairperson Allison Rosanowski, a former principal of Darfield High School, took part in the trip and said they received a warm welcome from Coventry Council and enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the area's history and culture.

Sister City visit to CoventryA recent trip to Coventry in Rhode Island USA has helped develop closer bonds with Selwyn’s newest sister city, with more trips to other sister cities planned next year.

"We visited Rhode Island's State Parliament and local sites where we learnt about the early interaction between native Americans and the British, Rhode Island's role in the War of Independence and the Civil War."

She said they also visited a local high school and middle school.

"We were impressed with the wide range of trade programmes Coventry High School offered to students including building, catering, graphic design and automotive repairs.

“There is an opportunity for Selwyn schools to develop a relationship with schools in Coventry and for local students to learn more about America through this.”

A return visit by Coventry residents is planned for March 2017, where visitors will be hosted in Selwyn homes.

Selwyn also has Sister City relationships with Yubetsu-cho

Anyone interested in finding out more about future sister city trips can contact Bernadette on 347 2830 or email [email protected]. Participants need to be over 18 and able to meet their own trip costs.

Professor Ken Hughey made the comments at the fifth biennial Living Lake symposium held at Lincoln University recently.

“A number of these processes are already in place, which we should be very proud of,” he said.

However, he said he was concerned at the impact vehicles were making on the restoration programme.

“We need to stop vehicles from wreaking havoc on a habitat of international significance.”

Professor Hughey said there was very little new information about recreational use of the lake.

“This is lamentable, as we should be able to monitor how recreation is changing. To measure is to manage.”

He recommended establishing an expert panel of recreational users to monitor activity over the next two years.

“It’s costly to survey recreation, so setting up a panel would be a good solution.”

The Living Lake symposium, run by the Waihora Ellesmere Trust (WET), included presentations from a range of experts on such topics as land use, water quality, vegetation and recreation at the lake and catchment. The aim was to provide an update on how these areas had fared since the last symposium

Degradation of Lake Ellesmere continuingLincoln University Professor Ken Hughey says it will take decades, if not generations, to stop the degradation at Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere, but the right processes must be implemented now for restoration to occur.

in 2013.The symposium began with a field

trip to the lake, followed by a day of presentations where the audience was given the opportunity to direct questions to panels of experts.

A key factor highlighted this year was that increased economic activity in the Selwyn district due to a rise in population had placed greater pressures on the lake, with more dairying and contract grazing taking place.

Kirsty Johnston, of Environment Canterbury (ECan), said Farm Environment Plans (FEPs) were helping to reduce these pressures by encouraging sustainable farming practices.

However, she said more data was needed to assess the situation further and that future FEP audit results would be helpful.

“Also geographic information systems be used more regularly for reporting on the state of the lake.”

Another key issue raised at the symposium related to a new regime involving planned lake openings, which create periodic connections with the sea.

This allows many fish species to pass in and out of Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere, lowering the lake level and providing nesting and feeding opportunities for birds.

However, when these openings persist over summer, they can have negative impacts on some native plant communities and birdlife.

ECan senior engineering advisor Leigh Griffiths said the lake had been opened to the sea 10 times between January 2013 and June this year.

Three long opening periods took place in 2013, with the lake open for 68 days, 47 days and 60 days respectively, during which times the lake level dropped.

ECan Ecology Scientist Kimberley Robinson said these openings had led to an increase in salinity, resulting in

visibly clearer water. “However, a more saline environment

could be detrimental to certain species in the lake bed.”

She said Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere remained in a hypertrophic state.

“This indicates nutrient saturation, elevated algal biomass and decreased water clarity. Many of the lake’s tributary streams need to be improved, as a high proportion are graded poor.”

She welcomed the recent instalment of permanent monitoring stations in the lake, which would provide real-time information on water quality.

The Living Lake Symposium 2015 was held at Lincoln University.

Sport and Recreation student Gabrielle Gray has been working with the Canterbury Rowing Association to investigate the reasons why many young Kiwi rowers give up the sport after leaving high school.

“Rowing Canterbury were interested in finding out how to improve the retention rate of rowers after high school and wanted a student to assist them with the research,” Ms Gray said.

As part of a project called Rowing Experiences and Pathways for New Zealand School Leavers, she surveyed 26 male and 30 female high school rowers about their rowing experiences and future plans with regard to the sport.

“Forty-one of the participants rowed for a Christchurch school and 70% had rowed for three or four years.

“They were asked where they rowed and how often, and also told to rate

their experience.”She said the majority of respondents

described their experience as positive and said that the social aspect of the sport was by far the biggest reason why they enjoyed it.

“Eighty-five percent of the participants said they loved the social opportunities that rowing gave them.

“They mentioned feeling like part of a family, appreciating the thrill of having a strong crew and being able to mix with people from all year levels, and enjoying the camaraderie and banter involved.”

According to Ms Gray’s research other enjoyable aspects of the sport included achieving rowing success, which enhanced the participants’ confidence, with 60% saying they enjoyed pushing themselves and training hard.

On the negative side, 60% of participants said they found it difficult to

balance schoolwork with rowing, due to the amount of time they were expected to spend at training sessions. When asked about factors that might deter them from continuing with rowing after finishing high school, many said they were put off by the prospect of having to train too often.

“Other participants said they were uncomfortable with making the transition from senior school rower to starting at the bottom at a club,” Ms Gray said.

Several respondents indicated that they would be more likely to continue rowing if they could train when they wanted to, have time off over the Christmas period and above all, be given the chance to row socially in mixed-gender crews.

“The results show that it’s really important for clubs to place more emphasis on social rowing.”

Hosted by the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation, the charity set up by Olympic running champion Sir Murray Halberg, the games will be held at St Peter’s School in Cambridge in April next year.

Sefton batted first and could only muster a paltry 137 all out in the 30th over.

Wellywood was the pick of the Leeston-Southbridge bowlers taking three for 25 and was backed up by Dougald Munro who also bagged three wickets.

Tim Harrison and Josh Jones were the only Sefton batsmen to get any traction before both being dismissed in the 30s.

Sefton’s 137 was never going to be enough as Leeston-Southbridge reached the target four down and with 18 overs to spare.

Wellywood was again in the action, this time with bat in hand, scoring 59 not out to guide his side home.

Sefton’s loss meant Southbrook could leapfrog them into top spot on the ladder and they did just that with a crushing win over an Oxford side which was missing a number of key players.

Leeston-Southbridge in upset winby Kyle Knowles

Leeston-Southbridge scored an upset win over table-toppers Sefton thanks to an all-round performance from Nick Wellywood in the Canterbury premier country cricket competition.

Oxford’s batting line-up was no match for Southbrook’s bowlers and were rolled for 49.

Darryn Boyle and Craig Renai both continued their strong form with the ball taking four for eight and three for 16 respectively.

Southbrook wrapped up the match in seven overs without losing a wicket. Tom Rodden finished on 36 not out off 23 balls while Jonty Brown was 16 not out.

Lincoln also had a big win over Greendale thanks to a five wicket bag from Reuben Craw.

He took five for 24 as Greendale were bundled out for 74. Simon Clark also took an economical three for 11 for Lincoln.

The home side were untroubled in their small run chase and reached the target one wicket down.

Opening batsmen Nico Lerm was 49 not out as Lincoln recorded their sixth win of the season to remain in third place on the ladder.

Weedons also had a comfortable win over South Malvern with both teams now having a four win, five loss record.

Mike Kingston grabbed four for 20

with the ball as South Malvern were knocked over for 107.

Weedons’ openers, Josh Watson and Sam Wilson then chased down the small total with aplomb.

Both were unbeaten as they reached the target in the 19th over, Watson finished on 54 and Wilson on 46.

South Malvern batsman Tom Rowlands is bowled by Weedons spinner Devon Nightingale.

In the men’s singles Jeron Breunisse and stalwart Jack Prouting recorded wins for West Melton while Kirwee’s Will Grayling and Scott Taylor won their singles matches.

On the women’s side of the draw, West Melton dominated with Grayson Cullen, Alice Foote and Suzanne Williams winning their matches while Janine Topham recorded the only singles win for Kirwee.

The men’s and women’s doubles matches were evenly divided between the two sides but West Melton took three of the four mixed doubles encounters to seal the title.

Darfield finished the competition in third place after disposing of Courtenay 12-4 on home court.

The A grade competition will take a break over the Christmas and New Year period before returning with a knockout competition in January.

West Melton wins titleWest Melton has clinched the Malvern A grade round robin tennis title with a 9-7 win over nearest rivals Kirwee on Saturday.

West Melton’s Alice Foote helped her side to the Malvern A grade tennis title.

Do you want to save time, money and water?

Despite New Zealand having a temperate climate with plenty of rainfall, water is still one of the most precious resources we have and we shouldn't take it for granted.

Many lifestyle block owners live with a restricted water supply including rural water schemes, trickle feed supply or roof water.

For those of us who were brought up on seemingly unlimited town supply it can be a shock to even have to consider our water usage. Here are some tips:

Day to day water senseDevelop good water-saving habits as

a running tap can waste up to 14 litres per minute.

If you're washing something in a sink, whether it's your hands, dishes or clothes, put the plug in the sink before turning on the tap. Don't run the water until it's hot before putting in the plug.

Think water conservation this summerArticle supplied by www.lifestyleblocks.co.nz

This summer is shaping up to be extremely hot and dry and the demands on Selwyn’s water supply will be great. Already Selwyn residents and lifestyle block owners are being asked to consider conserving water.

There's a good chance that you'd have to add cold water anyway.

Talking of which, make sure your water temperature is set to an appropriate level, if it's too hot then you waste water cooling it down.

In the same way, don't run the tap waiting for the water to get cold when you're thirsty, keep a jug of water in the fridge instead.

Turn off the taps when brushing your teeth - if you brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day this could save up to 76 litres of water per person per day.

Same with shaving - turn off the tap and rinse the razor in the water in the sink, not under a running tap.

Don't overdo the washing up liquid - it just wastes more water while rinsing. While on the subject of rinsing, don't rinse dishes under a running tap; have a sink partly filled with water instead.

Make sure dishwashers and washing machines are full when you use them - half load settings use more than half a full load setting.

Use liquid soap as it takes less water to rinse hands that have been washed with liquid soap rather than solid.

Mulch your flower beds and vegetable

gardens to conserve water and get the added bonus of cutting down on weeds.

Rinse and peel vegetables in a pot or bowl of water rather than under a running tap and then use the water on your garden or house plants.

Water wastersEven if you are water smart your

house may not be, check the list below for potential water wasters in your home.

A dripping tap isn't wasting much, is it? Actually it is up to 100 litres a day, that's around 3,000 litres each month.

A leaky cistern can use up even more. To check your cistern, put a little food colouring in the cistern and wait twenty

Working alongside construction professionals in both the commercial and residential sectors, Christchurch’s Dynamic Drainage says its greatest strength is its ability to “get in, get the job done, and get out again”, causing as little on-site disruption as possible while producing quality results.

“We recognise that excavation work and drain laying can be disruptive, and we’re committed to completing our tasks in the quickest, most efficient manner possible,” says managing director Grant Wooster.

“Utilising quality equipment and the vast experience of our professional team, we strive to finish each drainage project in the shortest possible time.

“Our ability to complete jobs up to three times faster than other in the industry means less downtime for other trades on site, helping to keep the projects we work on within budget and on time.”

Dynamic Drainage was established in 2007 by drainage professional Wooster, who has more than 15 years of hands on industry experience behind him.

Dynamic Drainage was initially focused on domestic drainage, with a number of regular housing company clients using Dynamic Drainage on new builds and renovations.

The company has enjoyed consistent and sustainable growth over the past seven years, and the team is now 19 staff members strong, including five highly experienced foremen and six apprentice drain layers.

Dynamic Drainage is now turning its skills and experience to the light commercial market, with Wooster focusing on a high standard of health and safety protocols which are imperative in commercial work.

“In the domestic market it’s more important to get things done as quickly as possible, but in the

commercial market all the project managers are most interested in health and safety,” Wooster says.

He says Dynamic Drainage’s work ethic sets it apart from other drainage companies, and its experience and proven ability to operate efficiently in collaboration with other trades makes the company an ideal addition to commercial projects.

“The builders we work alongside, be they independent contractors or building companies of significant size, have made commitments to their clients with regard to time-frames, deadlines and budgets, and we recognise the role we play in keeping to those promises,” Wooster says.

“Each and every member of our team is friendly, well-presented, and trustworthy. They take pride in their work and are committed to going above and beyond the call of duty to exceed the expectations of those we worth with.”

Committed to delivering a service that is second-to-none when it comes to speed and efficiency, Dynamic Drainage has invested considerable capital to ensure its crews can operate with the very best tools and resources possible.

The company is constantly monitoring world wide trends and innovations, investing in training, and upgrading equipment as and when necessary to ensure its clients receive cutting edge services and exceptional service.

With considerable hands-on experience and vast industry knowledge, Dynamic Drainage drainage specialists can offer advise and direction, and are happy to meet onsite for an obligation-free consultation or to provide a quote.

With five crews operating throughout Christchurch and across th wider Canterbury region, Dynamic Drainage has the skills and the capacity to handle any drainage project, and offers a guarantee on all its work.

minutes. If the water in the toilet bowl has become coloured too then you have a leak. Shockingly, a cistern with a steady leak could be wasting more than 10,000 litres each month.

If you have a large single flush cistern then you may be wasting over 5 litres or water per flush. If the cistern is a ballcock type then you can bend down the ballcock arm so the cistern stops filling sooner. If it's not then you can put a house brick, or a plastic bottle or bottles full of water into the cistern to save that volume of water each time you flush.

Built-in water efficiencyWhen you're building or renovating

there are ways to build-in water savings.Old style single flush cisterns use up

to 11 litres of water per flush. Modern, dual-flush cisterns can use less than half that.

It's easier to get the temperature you want with single lever mixer taps, saving you time and water.

A low flow or water efficient shower head can cut the water used per shower by around 50%.

Baths - obviously, the bigger the bath the more water it will take. A contoured

bath uses less water than an older style bath.

Many appliances have a water efficiency rating on them so check them out before buying. For example a front loading washing machines use less water than top loaders.

If you can, separate your grey water and collect it in a water tank. Grey water is waste water from kitchen sinks, dishwashers, laundry tubs, washing machines, showers, baths and basins.

You may need resource consent to use grey water in some situations so check with your local council.

On the lifestyle blockThere are some basic guidelines

to prevent losing water on your lifestyle block.

Know where your water lines are and where the weak spots (eg joints) are located and make sure that water lines above the ground are protected from livestock and machinery.

Check troughs regularly for leaks and worn fittings and protect lines that run under high-use areas such as races.

Try to set up a system that limits your water loss if a water line breaks.

Sometimes, no matter how water smart you are in times of drought you may have to cope with a very limited water supply. When that happens you need to take some extra measures• Don't run the taps while you're

lathering soap into your hands, run

the tap only to wet hands then again to rinse.

• The same goes for the shower, get wet, turn off the shower and lather up, then turn on again to rinse.

• Don't flush unnecessarily, as the old adage has it "If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down”.

• Consider showering with a friend. And remember, the more water you

collect and store, the less frequently you should have this problem, so hook collection tanks up to garages, sheds, animal shelters and even the chook house.

Community Energy Action (CEA) is a charitable trust specialising in helping people make sense of all the information on energy efficiency that is available.

Their energy advisors offer free independent advice over the phone or they can come out to your home and discuss everything that uses power (or firewood) and provide a detailed but easy to read Home Energy Check report that will give you clear priorities to work on.

“Most of the information on energy efficiency that is freely available to homeowners, comes from sales people for specific energy products,” CEA chief executive Caroline Shone says.

“They will all tell you their product will provide significant energy efficiency gains. If you have to make a choice between the different products though, it can be confusing so you need independent, objective advice for your particular home and lifestyle.”

Ms Shone says double glazing, extra insulation, taking out old downlights, a new heating appliance, photovoltaic (PV) systems all have energy efficiency benefits but most people will not have the money to do it all.

Take independent advice when renovatingTrying to improve energy efficiency while doing renovations is a smart move, however, knowing what is most economical to focus on, when you don’t have an endless supply of money, can be difficult without independent advice.

“That’s where our advisers come in. For a modest amount they ensure homeowners can be confident that they are making a well-informed choice.

“Advisers can also point out areas of energy improvement in the house, which

A Home Energy Check from Community Energy Action will help renovators decide how to prioritise increased energy efficiency.

owners may not be aware of.”Ms Shone says the investment in

a Home Energy Check will most likely pay for itself through better targeted energy efficiency improvements during renovations.

“It will ensure that homeowners can enjoy their home for years to come while enhancing its value.”

For more information and to make an appointment for a Home Energy Check contact CEA on 0800 GET WARM (0800 438 9276) or visit www.cea.co.nz.

Nursery and Garden Industry Association of New Zealand chief executive Dr John Liddle says soil is rich with living organisms which are beneficial to plants and generally cause no harm to animals or people.

“Soil does, however, contain some organisms that are not beneficial such as a type of Legionella bacteria, which is commonly found in the environment. In rare cases this can cause Legionnaire’s disease.

“Gardening is a popular pastime enjoyed by thousands of New

Summer gardening safety tipsby Steve Sheppard

As the trend towards growing your own fruit and vegetables continues its resurgence with Kiwi gardeners, it is timely to highlight some simple safety messages according to an industry expert.

Zealanders. Apart from the obvious cost savings associated with growing your own, the positive psychological benefits can best be described as ‘food for the soul’,” Dr Liddle said.Seven tips for safer gardening• Gently water your garden and potted

plants to minimise airborne droplets and dust

• Read the warning label on bagged composts and potting mixes before use

• Wear gloves and a dust mask when handling soil including bagged products

• Open bagged products slowly using scissors and lean the bag away from your face

• Gently dampen potting mixes before use

• Make sure your working area eg shed or greenhouse, is well ventilated

• Wash your hands when finished.

Not all those who come into contact with the bacteria become sick and symptoms will vary from person to person. If people become infected with Legionella, they may get flu-like symptoms that can range from mild

to severe. However, it can be life-threatening

to people who have health factors that increase their susceptibility. Those most at risk include smokers, the elderly and those with existing respiratory illnesses and weakened immune systems.

“Following some simple safety precautions will greatly minimise the small risk that there is. If people want to find out more they should refer to the Ministry of Health’s Safer and Healthier Gardening pamphlet.” Dr Liddle said.

Taking precautions, like wearing gloves and working in well ventilated areas, will help to minimise the health risks associated with handling potting mix.

Retired MAF livestock officer John

Newton runs a few sheep on his small

property in Selwyn Street to help

feed himself, but a recent dog attack

saw one sheep killed and two others

seriously mauled.

“It appears these two dogs made

their attack at about 4.15am as my

neighbour on hearing a disturbance

entered my property and disturbed the

dogs during the attack causing the dogs

to take off.

“These dogs are killers as in

my experience the attack was by

throat strangulation normally used

by undomesticated, uncontrolled

mongrel animals or animals in natural

wild conditions.

“My concern is these types

of dogs could well be capable of

attacking children.”

He said as a superannuitant his

sheep were his annual supply of meat

and also helped to keep the grass down

for fire protection.

“The two surviving sheep were so

stressed they are now unsuitable for

human consumption which means a

loss of around $500 and I will have to

replace the animals.”

Mr Newton said the Selwyn District

Control animal control was informed of

the attack and he was impressed with

their response.

“Animal control was prompt in

attending following a call, taking

descriptions of the animals, photos of

the aftermath of the attack and doing a

search for the dogs.”

The dogs were caught on a security

camera and the footage has given to

the council’s animal control department.

Mr Newton said it isn’t the first time

Coalgate residents have had to deal

with dog attacks.

“There have been around 30

sheep killed by dog attacks in the

Coalgate area over the last two years

which have resulted in a loss to the

sheep’s owners of about $3000 and

in many cases the sheep have been

family pets.”

Council’s Senior Animal Control

Officer Steve Clarke said they were

alerted to the attack by Police.

“After the attack a witness was

interviewed and black and white CCTV

camera footage was also reviewed.

“Two dogs were involved in the

attack and they appear to be either

a Mastiff or Staffy cross breed. The

dogs looked very similar and could

well be related so staff also checked

records to identify where there were

registered dogs in the area of similar

breeds and spoke to a number of dog

owners, however, this did not identify the

dogs involved.”

Mr Clarke said they also sent letter

to properties in the Coalgate township

asking for information to help identify

the dogs.

“This also advised dog owners to

check they were responsible for their

dog's activities and that owners need to

ensure they know where their dogs are.

Coalgate superannuitant John Newton is out of pocket and has had his meat supply destroyed after

The Games celebrated its fifth

birthday on Saturday at the Hororata

Domain with over 9000 people

attending, 300 competitors taking part,

102 stall holders selling their wares and

200 volunteers working tirelessly behind

the scenes.

Chieftain Alex Bruce, managing

director of Adelphi Distillery an

independent bottler of single cask

Scotch whisky, and a direct descendant

of Robert the Bruce, travelled all the way

from Glasgow for the event.

“I was impressed with how well

organised the event was and by the

number of people who attended, which

was considerably more than most

Highland Games in Scotland,” Mr

Bruce said..

“The Hororata Highland Games is

most definitely authentic, paying tribute

to many Scottish traditions, but I really

enjoyed the new elements that have

been introduced and the Kiwi twist was

very special.

“I was honoured to be involved in the

event and would love to come back.”

Event manager Cindy Driscoll was

delighted with the way this year’s event

turned out.

“The Hororata Highland Games

began out of a community desire to

take charge of its own destiny following

the Canterbury earthquakes,” Mrs

Driscoll said.

“Now five years on, the community’s

passion for the event is just as

strong as ever and this passion flows

through the whole event giving it a very

special atmosphere.”

Championship was once again a highlight

of the event with New Zealander, Ruben

De Jong, taking out the title.
