From Santa to Solutia, Lloyd Andrews’ busi-ness is preserving different images, and he likes it that way.

“It’s a real varied business — just a little bit of everything,” said the 58-year-old studio pho-tographer, owner of Studio One Photography, Inc.

This, of course, is the time of year Andrews links back up with his reliable Santa Claus help-er, Bill Veazey, for photo sessions designed to bring out the Christmas light in tiny tots’ eyes.

“You want to create images that evoke emo-tion,” Andrews said.

The emotion-evoking setting this year was the kitchen of the long-gone Anniston Inn. Located on West 15th Street, the structure’s 19th-century stylings make it “look like a place where Santa lives,” according to one customer’s account, Andrews said.

“The day that Santa’s here is a lot of fun,” he

he added, explaining that pre-paid, pre-scheduled sessions keep the focus on the children and their happiness.

“We’re not the cheapest in town, but you get personal service — and he [Veazey] is a great Santa.”

Andrews has been practicing his craft professionally for 24 years — and as an amateur for many years before that, while he was an employee at Monsanto. It was a hobby he picked up from his father.

“I was a real avid amateur pho-tographer,” said the 1970 graduate of Oxford High School.

Andrews made the jump into professional ranks when he bought the studio business and equipment of Martin and Doro-thy Vaughn. He remained at the couple’s 17th Street location for a while, then for 11 years was estab-lished in the Everett Plaza shop-ping strip across from the Down-towner. His Christine Avenue location has served him four years — in an era when images emerge from pixels, not chemicals.

“We started paring down when digital [technology] hit,” he said.

His studio space includes sev-eral styles of backdrops and props on which the subject can stand, sit or lean. There is no darkroom.

Because photography is about image, and so is salesmanship, Andrews is doing more work for businesses than he used to. This includes not just photography but assembling the publication, e.g., sales brochure, in which the images are printed.

“Business is moving more and more to graphic layout and design and less studio photography,

which I like.”A commercial photographer on

assignment for a business has to convey a different sort of message — such as reliablity or profession-alism — than when he’s taking a family portrait, which generally conveys an emotion. But business photography has its interesting moments, just as Santa photogra-phy has its cute ones.

Andrews spent six hours recently to produce just three images of amber liquid in a beaker. The liquid, known as Therminol 59, is a heat-transfer medium used by Solutia. The assignment was to create a picture of the product interesting enough to go on the cover of a trade magazine.

Assignments like that highlight the varying nature of the commer-cial photographer’s business.

“Last weekend I was photo-graphing Therminol 59 and this weekend I’ve got a big wedding at the Methodist church,” Andrews said.

He said that through economic times both lean and robust, he has depended on longtime customers to keep him going.

“I’ve got a wonderful client base that’s been a support for me,” he said. The coming of digital pho-tography in recent years, he added “thinned the herd” of commercial photographers, since the myster-ies of the darkroom were taken out of the equation.

But, Andrews said, there’ll always be the human element in his portrait work.

“It goes back to what made a good photographer in Matthew Brady’s time. If you don’t have a pleasing pose and a pleasing expression, you don’t have a good picture.”

Readers who know of interest-ing jobs — or perhaps common jobs that involve more than meets the eye — are invited to email [email protected] for a pos-sible write-up for “Off to Work.”

A chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remaining property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive payment. It may also be used by businesses which wish to terminate their business.A chapter 13 bankruptcy enables debtors, through court supervision and protection, to propose and carry out a repayment plan under which creditors are paid, in full or in part, in installments over a three-year period. During that time, debtors are prohibited from starting or continu-ing collection efforts.

The following bankruptcies declared by Calhoun County residents were recorded by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Alabama last week:
