From the dawn service at Burnham military camp through to afternoon services in places like Greendale, people took time out to remember those New Zealanders who have served in foreign conflicts.

For the first time Anzac Day services were held in West Melton and Greendale with around 300 attending each of the inaugural services.

The West Melton service was held in the local primary school at a newly built war memorial in the school grounds, while Greendale residents marked the occasion at the Greendale War Memorial Gates at the entrance to Greendale Domain.

Bruce Russell, who was the force behind the West Melton service, said

Selwyn Libraries are inviting people to enter a ‘Design Your Library Card’ competition to help create the next generation of library cards.

Residents, school children, members of Selwyn art groups and those who work in Selwyn district are invited to draw, paint, photograph or digitally design artworks to be printed on the next set of Selwyn library cards and key tags.

“We have some very talented artists of all ages in the Selwyn community and we want their work to be visible to all library members on our new cards,” Selwyn Libraries manager Vicki Carlyon said.

The theme for all designs is ‘Why I love my Library.’

Entries will be judged based on creativity, design, printability and the message communicated.

There are three entry categories:

Cycleway marks WWI 100The opening of the new Springston to

Lincoln cycleway was timed to coincide with Anzac Day.

The Springs Memorial Cycleway 1915-2015 pays tribute to the soldiers from Springs County, Springston and Lincoln townships who died in the service of their country.

Mayor Kelvin Coe formally opened the cycleway following the Anzac Day service at Springston School.

“It will be a great addition to the evolving network of cycleways in Selwyn and people from Springston and Lincoln as well as the rest of Selwyn will be able to enjoy this new cycleway,” Mayor Coe said.

The track was designed by the Selwyn District Council and was jointly funded by the council and the Springston Community Committee.

“The track will help to remember the generations of soldiers who made sacrifices for the country,” committee chair Dr Rupert Tipples said.

The 2.6km cycleway provides a safe way for cyclists and pedestrians to move

children (5-12 years), teen (13-17 years) and adult (18 and over).

The winner from each category will take home a new android tablet and there will also be random prizes drawn including coffee vouchers, Selwyn Aquatic Centre passes, and movie passes.

The competition runs through until May 12. Judges will then choose three finalists from each category, and these entries will be displayed in the libraries and on the Selwyn Libraries Facebook page.

The public will then be able to vote for their favourite entry on the Selwyn Library Facebook page, or at their closest Selwyn library.

Entry forms can be collected from Rolleston, Darfield, Lincoln and Leeston libraries and from the Mobile Library as well as the libraries website.

between Springston and Lincoln. Meanwhile, the construction of a

new cycleway connecting Lincoln and Rolleston will start soon, and three further cycleways are to be developed over the next five years - between Glentunnel and Coalgate, Leeston and Doyleston and Rolleston and Templeton.

Rolleston Library staff members Chrissie Walker, left, and Sandra Newbigging are looking for some exciting new designs replacing the existing Selwyn Libraries card.

Selwyn resident Chris Martin enjoys the new Springston to Lincoln cycleway.

Emily de Rooy, left and Nicole Gulland from the Selwyn Youth Council hand out free coffee on Neighbours Day at Faringdon in Rolleston.

Five members of the youth council visited Rosemerryn and Liffey Springs subdivisions in Lincoln and Faringdon in Rolleston to serve free coffees and refreshments from a new coffee cart the youth council has bought.

George Steele, who was one of the youth council members who took part in the day, said it was designed to encourage new residents to visit their local parks and get to know their new neighbours by chatting to them over a coffee.

“We decided to purchase the coffee cart as a business venture,” George said.

“We wanted to develop our skills by developing a business plan setting out how we would use the cart to make our business financially viable while gaining on the job work experience.

“This project will provide youth council members with valuable experience about what running and being part of a business involves.”

The youth council is planning to take

the cart to community events in the future and profits from the cart will be used to host activities and events for young people.

The youth council also plans to take the cart to major fires and civil defence events to provide free refreshment for emergency service workers and volunteer fire fighters.

Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe said it was great to see the youth council being active to help build a sense of community in Selwyn.

“The youth council are excellent role models for others by demonstrating how entrepreneurial skills can be used to benefit our youth and the wider community.”

The decision by the Selwyn District Council appointed commissioner means Rolleston residents will not have the opportunity to oppose the application by Pest Control Research (PCR) through the consent process.

A group opposed to the application, 1080 Free Rolleston, set up a petition against the consent gathering over 2,500 signatures.

One of the organisers of the group, Jonathon Scott, said they are incredibly disappointed the consent has been made non-notifiable.

“What this means is that those who are opposed to it will not be able to have their views heard as part of the consent process nor will groups like the Rolleston Residents Association.

“I find it incredibly frustrating that PCR have pulled the wool over the eyes of the commissioner and the Selwyn council through mis-truths and half stories.”

Rolleston’s bait manufacturing plant gets go aheadu by Kent Caddick

A group opposed to a 1080 bait manufacturing plant in Rolleston’s Izone business area is ‘incredibly disappointed’ the plant has been given the all clear following a decision by an independent commissioner to allow resource consents to be non-notified.

Mr Scott said he knows of two households who have moved out of Rolleston because of the plant.

In his decision commissioner Dean Chrystal said the application can be processed on a non-notified basis.

“A technical report has been received from Tonkin and Taylor which has assessed the potential adverse effects of the application and has advised that these adverse effects will be less than minor,” Mr Chrystal said in his ruling.

“Comprehensive site management procedures will be put in place that control the production of dust both during storage and throughout the manufacturing process of the hazardous substances.

“Production of dust during preparation of the hazardous substances for manufacturing will be tightly controlled and limited to the laboratory. Dust produced during the manufacturing process will be collected within a dust

containment system and recycled back into the process.

“The finished bait product is bagged inside tightly sealed and waterproof

packaging. The facility will be thoroughly cleaned at regular intervals with dedicated industrial vacuums,” Mr Chrystal said.

“The amount of memorabilia on display was a credit to the way people responded to our appeals for items to mark the occasion,” Ian Warren said.

“The very special thing for me was the number of relatives of the WWI soldiers on the memorial gates who came to pay their respects. It meant the occasion was also a reuniting of relatives, some who had never even met before.”

Four children whose fathers had served during WWI were on hand to help plant a Gallipoli oak next to the memorial gates and a new flag pole was also dedicated during the service.

ANZAC Day 1915 - 2015

Right across Selwyn communities gathered on Anzac Day to remember the men and women from their district who served their country in armed conflict.

Selwyn marks 100 years since the Gallipoli landing

This year’s services were all the more poignant with 2015 marking 100 years since the failed Gallipoli campaign which gave birth to the Anzac bond.

The Record photographers Peter Walker and Kent Caddick attended services throughout the day to capture the spirit of remembrance in Selwyn.

Planning a home maintenance schedule will help prevent problems from arising or getting worse and you’ll save yourself plenty of money and heartache.

Maintenance is the work necessary to keep your home in a good state of repair to maximise its value and your comfort. Maintaining your home also helps increase its life, ensures it continues to perform and reduces your impact on the environment.

Everything that keeps your home liveable and structurally sound needs to be maintained – from foundations to roofing and cladding to plumbing and electricity supply to interior wall linings.

If your home was built or received building consent after 1992 you are responsible for making sure it continues to meet Building Code requirements.

Maintenance includes everything from regular cleaning to repairs and replacements. It can be a job as small as changing a tap washer, or as large as repainting the whole house.

Benefits of good maintenance• Save you money by allowing you to

fix problems before they get bigger.• Make it more comfortable to

live in.• Protect your home against

weathertightness problems.• Ensure it is safe and secure to

live in.• Help keep you and your

family healthy.• Help it to hold its value.

Scheduling maintenanceIt’s best to plan a regular maintenance

schedule. There are 4 main approaches to maintenance:• Carry out regular preventive

maintenance, such as cleaning your roof and walls. This will prevent some problems from occurring.

• Carry out repairs as they are needed. This prevents small problems from turning into big ones. For example, a leaky roof could destroy your ceiling if left unfixed.

• Plan ahead for major maintenance tasks such as repainting your home or re-roofing, so you have the money and time available when the work is needed.

• Be prepared for emergencies. For example, know where and how your water, gas and power supplies turn off, so you don’t have to go searching when an emergency arises. See the back of the Yellow Pages or the Civil Defence site for information on preparing for a civil defence emergency.

Autumn is a time when keeping gutters clean can ensure a stress free winter when the rains come.

Living with poultryby Dr Majorie Orr, www.lifestyleblock.co.nz

For many lifestyle block owners, a few chickens are an important part of their quality of life.

Len, a Barred Plymouth Rock rooster, rules his roost in West Melton.

them, replenish their supplies and gather eggs surely did more for us than them. But it may have also been the genesis of Len’s love/hate relationship towards me.

At that time one of the few items of clothing available for me was a long white fluffy dressing gown and Len clearly mistook me for a bloated and unusually tall White Sussex hen. I’m not sure what the neighbours thought of a ghostly apparition fleeing across the overgrown paddock pursued by some unseen demon.

The eggs the hens produce are superb, particularly the vibrant yellow yolks, so different to most supermarket eggs.

Len occasionally roosts in the magnolia tree but most of the time he can be seen strutting around the property with one or more ladies in tow, but he always sees them safely home at night.

There is something very relaxing about the way chickens croon and warble as they meander through the yard fossicking for insects and pottering about in the dust.

They lay eggs with rich yellow yolks, providing breakfast or lunch for the family on a daily basis, and poultry raised for meat can provide tasty meals.

In well-managed backyard flocks, chickens can live for several years, and with life spans of 6 to 8 years they can become pets as well as providing food for the table. It’s not surprising then that they have become such an integral part of the lifestyle many of us enjoy.

A personal experienceby Graeme Smith, West Melton lifestyle block owner

Like many lifestylers, we had to have poultry, so now we have Len and his ladies.

Len is a beautiful (although he would prefer handsome) Barred Plymouth Rock rooster, and he rules our lives. He has a harem of five ladies – two Plymouths, a White Sussex, a Barnevelder and a Black Hamburg.

He has assumed the right to traverse any part of the property including the flower and vegetable beds and, in particular, the rose garden. He is a great defender of his flock. If I come anywhere near them, particularly if I surprise them, he is ready to drive me off.

The flock was of significant therapeutic support after we were displaced from our house by the September 2010 quake. The need to have a daily visit to check on

For all your footcare requirements

• Nail care

• Orthotics

• Diabetic Footcare

• Children’s feet

A podiatrist specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle problems, such as heel and forefoot pain, corns and callous, Athlete’s foot and ingrowing toenails, which can occur when you undertake physical exercise.

Your foot is made up of 26 individual bones and 33 joints and ligaments and during exercise they all work together for support as a huge amount of pressure is exerted on the feet. For example when jogging there can be up to one and a half times your body weight transferred through the feet with each step.

Because of this force placed on your legs and feet it is important to have footwear that provides cushioning for shock absorption and support for your natural foot structure.

There are a wide variety of shoes with specific features for your chosen activity and it is a good idea to discuss some options with your podiatrist or specialist footwear retailer to get the shoe best suited to your foot type.

Fitness and your feetu by Charlotte Russell, Feet First Podiatry

Your feet are one of the most overlooked body parts when it comes to exercise.

Getting the right sports or training shoe which is best suited to your foot type is crucial to foot health. Photo courtesy of www.top10pop.com

Shoe buying tips• Shop at the end of the day when

feet are more swollen to get a good fit.

• Have your feet measured and fit to the larger foot.

• Take time to try different brands and walk around the shop in each pair – let your foot be the guide to the fit, rather than the size, style or colour.

• Check inside the shoe for any seams or detail stitching that may irritate your foot.

• Replace running shoes every 300-600km.

• Try on shoes with the socks you will wear when exercising and remember if you wear orthotics, to bring them along to the fitting.

• There are two kinds of injuries associated with exercise. Firstly acute injuries such as fractures and sprains, which usually happen after a blow or force and overuse injuries which include stress fractures and soft tissue strains. These injuries are more likely to occur over time from repetitive activities such as running, or gym workouts.

Heel pain: Most frequently caused by plantar fasciitis, a condition characterised by pain which is usually worst first thing in the morning but gradually eases. It is often related to poor foot function and inadequate or inappropriate footwear.

Sever’s disease: Another possible cause of heel pain, usually seen in active children aged 8 to 12 years old, resulting in pain at the back of

the heel where the archilles tendon attaches to the heel bone. Pain usually gets worse with activity.

Stress fractures: Hairline cracks occurring in the bones of the foot with gradual onset of pain made worse by weight bearing activities.

In-growing toenails: A common cause of pain in the toes, often the result of poor cutting technique or poorly fitting footwear.

Common exercise related problems

A visit to your podiatrist can help to relieve the symptoms of many common foot problems which develop when working to improve your fitness. Treatment may consist of advice on

stretching, footwear choices, minor surgical procedures for management of ingrowing toenails and you may be prescribed orthotics to help control the function of your foot.

Serve with a dry Riesling. We recommend Braided River Riesling.
