Rolleston’s Erin Dexter has finally something to smile about after spending almost four years recovering from a crippling injury suffered in the February 2011 earthquake.

After almost four years recovering from a serious earthquake injury Rolleston grandmother Erin Dexter finally has some to smile about.

Ms Dexter is one of almost 400 people with a disability who have found employment in Canterbury in the last year through the Workbridge employment agency.

At the time of the February earthquake she had just moved to live in Rolleston but was working as an administrator for an insurance broker in Sydenham, not far from the Colombo Street Mall in Christchurch.

“I had just returned to the office from getting a coffee when the quake struck,” Ms Dexter said.

Without realising the extent of the damage to her body Ms Dexter made her way out of the first floor office onto the street, passing the body of an elderly lady she had moments before been sitting beside while waiting for her coffee.

Ms Dexter was diagnosed with what is referred to as a ‘frozen’ shoulder and an operation later that year failed to improve the situation and she continued to live in constant pain.

“I underwent a lot of physio but the pain wouldn’t go away and I was worried about becoming addicted to the pain relief.

“It was a vicious cycle, I was in constant pain, which meant I couldn’t sleep or work but at least I got to go home after the earthquake, not everyone did.”

Ms Dexter not only battled the pain but also ACC which had refused to fund a second operation to fix her frozen shoulder.

After living in a pain-induced fog for over two years she was finally able to get a second operation in August of last year and life began to look up.

Registrations are now open for Pink Ribbon Breakfast to help raise funds for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

Lorraine Downes, who is an NZBCF ambassador, said research is key to improving Kiwi women’s survival.

Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 and underwent successful treatment for the disease.

“The advances that saved my mum started with research projects like the ones the NZBCF is funding today. By hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast, you’ll help save more women down the track.”

Last year, supporters held 2400 Pink Ribbon Breakfasts around the country, attended by 65,000 people and raising $1 million.

The latest statistics show that 73% of Kiwi breast cancer patients are disease-free 10 years after diagnosis, but more than 600 women die of breast cancer each year.

outdoor adventure school in the Marlborough Sound is inviting applications from Selwyn residents  to attend its three week Classic course.

The course helps people to reach their potential through challenges in the outdoors, using the mountains, bush and waterways of Anakiwa as classrooms.

During the three week Classic course, participants aged 18 to 26 experience indoor and outdoor challenges including sailing, kayaking, camping and rock climbing.

Outward Bound school director Rob Maclean said the courses are designed to be mentally, emotionally, and physically challenging for the average participant.

“What Outward Bound gives people is the opportunity to experience transformation, to discover their true

Chilling out in Springfieldu by Kent Caddick

Parsons is about to begin a 23-date nationwide tour to promote her new album having just returned from playing in the United States and Australia.

“It has been great to chill out at home in Springfield and to recharge the batteries before I hit the road again,” Parsons said.

“Springfield is so removed from the way I spend most of my life, flying to gigs and staying in hotels. It’s nice to be just one of the locals again.”

While Parsons settled in Springfield in 2010 she has long held a connection to the Selwyn region even though she grew up on a farm near Westport.

“My Dad was originally from Hororata, my Uncle Roger is the fire chief in Hororata and my Grandmother lives in Darfield.

“As a family we have always been involved in skiing and the Mt Olympus field in particular. I even worked as a ski instructor there for a couple of seasons.

Springfield chanteuse Mel Parsons has been enjoying a few days of time at home before she embarks on her latest national tour.

“When I was looking to set down some roots I wanted somewhere which was a bit out of the way and close to the skiing. This part of Canterbury is so beautiful.”

The two-time Tui Award finalist is looking forward to playing both Springfield and Hororata as part of her upcoming tour.

“I love the connection with the audience in the smaller venues, it’s a real treat to play those local shows, the community gets in behind them and it’s a cool feeling.”

She said one of her favourite tours was when she played woolsheds throughout New Zealand.

“Those shows are some of my most favourite as the connection you get with the audience is far greater than you have in the bigger venues.”

Parsons will play the Springfield Community Hall on April 18 and Hororata on April 22.

Mel Parsons, second from right, enjoys time out at the Hororata Highland Games with family. From left, her father Derek Parsons, Ali Chandra (aunt), and grandmother June Parsons of Darfield.

Lincoln University’s Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Science in Sustainable Tropical Forest Management has been taught since 2006 in Sarawak, a Malaysian state on the island of Borneo.

Lincoln Faculty of Agribusiness and Commerce Dean, Professor Hugh Bigsby, initiated the course.

Professor Bigsby said forest management is becoming increasingly complex as the forest industry moves towards sustainable management practices and the need to meet multiple objectives from their forestry activities.

“Forest and logging managers are now being called on to deal not only with profitable forest operations, but as well,

Taking Lincoln University to Borneo

to deal with difficult environmental and social issues.

“In addition, many markets are now looking for assurance of sustainable forestry through forest certification, and more companies are looking at certification.

“As a result of these changes, developing the appropriate skills to successfully manage forestry operations that meet the goals of sustainable tropical forestry, which includes social and environment elements, has become an important requirement for managers in the forest sector of Sarawak.”

Professor Bigsby said Lincoln and the Sarawak Timber Association, with cooperation from the Sarawak

Forestry Corporation and the Sarawak Forest Department, developed the Postgraduate Diploma to meet the skill needs of those forestry managers.

“The Postgraduate Diploma was specifically designed for Sarawak, recognising that many of the people who work in the industry without formal training in forestry.

“It covers all aspects of forestry, including silviculture, harvesting, planning, economics, and social factors.

“It is also recognises many forest industry managers do not have a degree, and many others have not been at university for a long time, so it includes ways to help people develop skills for postgraduate study.”

Professor Bigsby said graduates include people who are new to the industry to those who have 30 years’ experience, as well as a number of people without an undergraduate degree.

There may not be many Kiwi accents in the tropical forests of Borneo but the skills needed to sustainably manage them are found here.

Lincoln Faculty of Agribusiness and Commerce Dean Professor Hugh Bigsby.

Currently an open fire season is in place in the rural areas of Selwyn district but Selwyn deputy principal rural fire officer Douglas Marshall said while the district has had some rain in recent weeks, if conditions become dry, fire restrictions could be re-imposed.

“We would like to remind people that even though rural areas in the plains

are in an open fire season anyone who lights a fire is still responsible for all costs involved in fire suppression and damage should the fire get out of control or if it creates a danger or nuisance to others,” Mr Marshall said.

“If people are lighting a fire we would also like to remind them that smoke is not permitted to drift over

roads and they may be liable if an accident occurs as a result of this.” Mr Marshall is also encouraging property owners to check their insurance covers fire suppression costs, and to have public liability insurance if a fire gets out of control and causes damage to property. “Rural fire officers at the council are here to help and can provide specialist advice, so people can call the council if they are unsure what rules are in place and would like advice.”

In residential areas, outdoor burning is not permitted all year round under Environment Canterbury air rules, with only gas barbeques permitted.  In high

country areas a restricted fire season remains in place permanently.

Escaped fires prompt warningFollowing a number of escaped vegetation fires over the past week Selwyn District Council is reminding residents they must follow safe burning practices and that fires are not permitted at night.

For the first time a service will be held at the Greendale War Memorial gates leading to the Greendale Domain and follows a refurbishment of the gates and its plaques by the Selwyn District Council.

The event is being organised by the Greendale Reserve Management Committee and committee secretary Ian Warren said the interest in the event has been widespread.

“We have relatives of the soldiers from Greendale coming from around the North Island and even Australia to help mark this very special event,” Mr Warren said.

“Usually Greendale residents would mark Anzac Day by attending a service at Darfield or Hororata but with the

The decision to hold to the service comes after the unveiling of a war memorial in the grounds of the West Melton Primary School late last year.

“Up until then West Melton was one of the few towns in Selwyn which did not have a memorial to honour those who had gone to fight in the various wars,” Anzac Day memorial organiser Bruce Russell said.

“So given this year marks 100 years since the landing at Gallipoli and the beginning of the Anzac spirit it is appropriate we hold our first service to remember those who went to fight.”

Mr Russell said it is also appropriate the memorial is in the school grounds.

“Many of those on the memorial actually attended the school and there is a growing interest among the younger generation in regard to Anzac Day. It is them who will carry on this spirit of remembrance into the future.”

As well as the service, which begins at 2.30pm, a collection of memorabilia, including a life-size model of a horse with a military harness provided by Neil Stott of Kimberly, will be on display at the Greendale Hall.

“We are also still looking for additional items, particularly ex-Greendale veteran’s photos, to go into the display.”

Mr Warren, whose father and uncle served during WW1 with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, said they will also be planting a Gallipoli oak to mark the occasion and a new flag pole has also been erected in time for this year’s service.

West Melton will hold its first ever Anzac Day service this month.

Shane Dawson and school caretaker John Blundell.

“During the course of our research we found that a lot of the servicemen from West Melton had actually gone to our school,” Mr Dawson said.

The memorial is made using stones from the Waimakariri, Rakaia and Selwyn rivers.

“Our thinking behind this was that by using stones from the three rivers, it was linking the whole area,” Mr Dawson said.

“It also symbolises how people from different areas were forced together to work for a common goal, in times of turmoil.”

Mr Russell said they are encouraging the whole community to attend.

“It is not just for those with a direct link to a relative who served but something all families in the community can share in.”

The West Melton Anzac commemorations will get underway at 10am with participants asked to assemble at 9.45am.

There’s nothing like relaxing in a spa to take away the stresses of daily life and to relax the weary body but getting the right spa to suit your needs and fit your budget can be a stress in itself.

We explain the pitfalls to be aware of, key things to know, and cut through the hype so you don’t spend more than necessary.

Size and priceSpa pools are available in a huge

range of sizes and shapes, from two-person models that fit in a corner to 10-person monsters. There are even extra-long spa pools with a section to swim against a current.

Most models hold four or more people. Look closely at the number and arrangement of seats – sometimes it’s a squeeze to fit in the claimed number of people, and there is normally a lot less room for legs than there is for bottoms.

The price range for spa pools is just as diverse, with basic models costing around $4000 through to deluxe models complete with all sorts of features – costing upwards of $40,000.

Price usually has more to do with the number and type of features than with size.

Don’t forget to include the cost of a building consent and fencing (see below) when working out your budget. You should also check whether delivery and set-up are included in the price. If your

u by Andrew Smith, wwwconsumer.org.nz

house has particularly difficult access, getting the spa into position may require a specialist moving company, a crane, or even a helicopter.

Extra featuresEven if you know roughly what size

spa pool you want, you’ll be dazzled by the array of extra features on offer. These include the number and type of water jets, multi-coloured LED lights, fountains, drinks coolers, sound systems and, yes, pop-up TVs.

While some jets give a much

better massage effect than others, you should think carefully about these extras and their additional cost. The best thing to do is “try before you buy”. All good spa retailers should have demonstration pools, so take your togs and a towel with you and try out the models you’re interested in.

Keep in mind that having a spa is often a social event, and the pump and jets on a spa can make enough noise to make conversation difficult. There will be times when a hot soak and a good massage are exactly what you need, often you’re likely to end up sitting in the spa talking without the pump and jets running.

Spa pools are available in a huge range of sizes and shapes. Image courtesy of EcoValue Spas

Choosing the right spa for you and your family

Safety and set-upMost spa pools are portable, self-

contained above-ground units, which are filled from a hose pipe and just need plugging or wiring into a power supply.

Models designed to be built in to a deck are basically above-ground models without the side cladding. Most above-ground models can also be built-in.

FencingYou’ll need a building consent

to put in a spa pool, and a requirement of the consent will be suitable fencing.

Exact specifications vary by local authority, but generally the fence will need to be at least 1.2m high, not have any features that would allow a child to climb it, and have self-closing and latching gates.

There may be changes to the legislation that relates to spa pool fencing soon to allow lockable covers to be used. In the meantime, check with your local authority for full details on fencing requirements.

for and the most durable. Fibreglass is often cheaper than acrylic, but needs more looking after and is likely to have a shorter lifespan.

Polyethylene  is a type of plastic commonly used to make water tanks and sit-on-top kayaks. Although a tough and hard-wearing material, polyethylene

has a softer matt surface rather than the more traditional hard shiny surface of acrylic or fibreglass.

Polyethylene construction is common at the cheaper end of the spa pool market, but we don’t think that means it’s an inferior material.

This article was supplied by Consumer New Zealand. For more on choosing the right spa for you and any other consumer matters go to wwwconsumer.org.nz

The price of a spa usually has more to do with the number and type of features than with size. Image courtesy of EcoValue Spas

DecksIf you’re thinking of putting a spa

pool on an existing deck it’s unlikely your deck has been designed to take the extra weight.

A spa capable of holding four or five people may only weigh 300-400kg when it is empty, but when full of water and people it can easily exceed 2 tonnes – 1000 litres of water weighs a tonne.

Whether you’re building a deck for a spa pool or looking at using an existing deck, you’ll need to consult an engineer to ensure the deck is strong enough. Where possible it’s cheaper and easier to cut a hole in the deck and sit the spa pool on the ground underneath.

WiringSpa pools with small pumps

(usually the smaller models or ones with few jets) can often just be plugged into a standard 10-Amp household socket.

Look for models that are rated at less than 2400W with pump and heater running. Beyond this you will need to get an electrician to wire in your spa pool. The cost will depend on what’s required to add the spa pool to your existing wiring and fuse box.

ConstructionSpa pools can be made of fibreglass,

acrylic with fibreglass reinforcing, or polyethylene – each has its pros and cons. Acrylic  tends to be the most expensive but is also the easiest to care

When it comes time to prepare that sheep, cow or pig for the family table, commonly known as homekill, there are a number of regulations people must follow or risk a very hefty fine.

Meat sold in New Zealand and export meat is subject to a number of standards under the Animal Products Act, which ensures the meat is fit for human consumption.

Farmers and other livestock owners often want to kill and eat their own livestock but as this home-killed meat

Homekill regulations are designed to prevent potentially unwholesome meat from being sold.

u by Dr Clive Dalton

Follow the rules when it comes to homekillOne of the attractions of owning a lifestyle block is the ability to grow and raise your own food, both in terms of vegetables and meat.

is not subject to any standards, no guarantee can be given as to its fitness for human consumption. Therefore homekill regulations are designed to prevent potentially unwholesome meat from being marketed.

Homekill, by definition, is the slaughtering and butchering of your own animal, either by yourself or by a listed homekill and recreational catch service provider, for your own use and consumption.

It also includes the use and consumption of your family and household. The inclusion of the word ‘use’ means that animal owners can

feed homekill meat to their animals. Any meat from animals that are slaughtered and processed in the regulated system, that is by a licensed abattoir, including regulated mobile premises, is not homekill meat.

Homekill meat cannot be traded under any circumstances. Only regulated meat can be traded as homekill meat is not regulated.

The definition of trade under the Animal Products Act means to sell for human or animal consumption and includes, among other things, bartering, supplying as part of a contract, supplying as part of a charge for another good or service, and using for advertisement, prize or fundraising.

Anyone who provides services such as the slaughtering, butchering, dressing

and packing of animals for farmers (or owners of stock) and hunters must be listed with MAF as a homekill and recreational catch service provider. It is an offence to provide such services, for reward, when not a listed homekill and recreational catch service provider.

Only animal owners who are actively engaged in the day-day maintenance of an animal, or other animals of the same kind, for a period of at least 28 days immediately preceding the date of the homekilling of the animal may use homekill and recreational catch service providers to kill and or process that animal.

The policy of a 28-day limit is based on a reasonable time period to ensure that the health and welfare of an animal can be cared for.

Most pets develop dental and gum disease by the age of three years, so you can imagine how bad our teeth would get if we didn’t brush our teeth for 3 or more years.

Routine dental care for cats and dogs can be simple, straightforward and will benefit your pet’s oral and overall health.

Signs of dental disease may include bad breath, yellow or brown deposits on the teeth, loss of appetite, discomfort around the mouth, bleeding gums, loose teeth, difficulty chewing or pawing at the mouth or face.

So, how does dental disease start? Teeth and gum disease starts when a

film of bacteria known as plaque coats the tooth. Plaque hardens into tartar which can be seen as a thick yellow or brown layer on the teeth. Tartar

You may be surprised to find out that dental and gum disease is the most common health problem in dogs and cats.

Dental care for your petsu by Yolande Howell, Selwyn Vet Centre

irritates the gums and also creates an environment where bacteria thrive.

As the disease gets worse the gums become tender, red and swollen. The gums eventually start pulling away from the teeth creating pockets that trap more bacteria and bits of food.

As the gums recede, they may bleed and as the tooth root becomes exposed teeth may also become loose. Your pet will very likely feel pain or discomfort when eating. The bacteria will eventually enter the blood stream and they can create health problems and affect vital organs. What can we do about this?

Pets, just like people, require routine dental care from you and your vet. Regular checkups with your vet will help monitor your pet’s dental health, however if you suspect a problem don’t hesitate to contact your vet.

After a vet check, your vet may recommend a dental procedure to clean your pet’s teeth, and to treat any dental

or gum disease. Unlike people cats and dogs will not sit in a chair and open their mouths for us to do these procedures; they will require general anaesthesia. Anaesthesia also allows for tooth extractions and pain medications are used in these circumstances.

Prevention is definitely better than cure and there are several methods to help keep your pet’s teeth and gums clean and healthy.

There are a variety of plaque reducing foods, treats, chews and toys. Every animal is different, consult your vet on which combination of preventatives would suit your pet best.

There is no substitute for regular brushing, which is why we do it ourselves to keep our teeth clean. Start early, pets can start having their teeth brushed at home, the younger they are the more likely you’ll succeed. Start slowly and gently, like all kinds of training that is reinforced with rewards and praise.

There are specially designed pet toothbrushes and finger brushes, or use a baby toothbrush. Use pet toothpaste only because toothpaste for people is not safe for your pets to swallow.

Begin by rubbing your pet’s teeth and gums with a soft finger brush, reward them and praise them when they are at ease. Then start incorporating the pet toothpaste and slowly increase the number of seconds you brush their teeth. Focus on their teeth and the gum line and gradually aim for 30 seconds of brushing for each side of the mouth at least a few times a week.

This takes time, just do it gradually, and if you should have any concerns contact your vet practice and they will help you with the process.

March, April and May are our main bulb planting months and the more bulbs we plant, the greater the rewards during winter and early spring.

If you plan to plant towards the end of the season, keep an eye out for bulb stocks arriving in garden centres (from March onwards) so you can procure your favourite varieties from the best of the new season’s stock. Tulip bulbs flower beautifully if they are kept in the fridge for eight weeks prior to planting.

Even if you have only a few bulbs, they will make more of a statement if you plant in close groupings rather than scattering them about.

Spring bulbs make excellent container plants. Their drainage needs can be accommodated very easily in pots, and once foliage begins to die down they can be moved from view.

For best results plant in bulb planting mix as this ensures the right balance of drainage, water holding ability and controlled release fertiliser. Terracotta pots are ideal because they’re porous which helps to keep bulb roots cool. Generally bulbs are grown forjust one season in a pot, so they can be planted

so they are almost touching.Beautiful woodland bulbs include

snowdrops, snowflakes, bluebells, and many daffodils. When planting bulbs under trees, compensate for soil-robbing tree roots by enriching the soil with moisture retentive compost and bulb fertiliser.

Many bulbs, especially daffodils and bluebells can be left in the ground to flower year after year. Resist the temptation to cut down the foliage until at least six weeks after flowering if you want flowers the following year.

If flowering seems in decline after a few years, overcrowding is the likely cause and it’s time to lift and divide.

Cool season annuals such as pansies, violas, primulas and forget-me-nots are among the best flowers to plant with bulbs.

Spring and summer flowering perennials such as catmint, Echinacea, Aquilegia (grannies bonnet) Penstemon, Achillea (yarrow), Salvia, Alchemilla (lady’s mantle), heucheras and cranesbill geraniums all make great bulb companions, remaining colourful after the bulb season has passed.
