Does "natural" mean organic?Should you buy anything labeled"non-toxic"? Here are the truthand eco-facts about many of thegreen terms you find on productlabels.

What's really green? Soon you'llhave a little more confidenceabout green product marketingclaims, such as "biodegradable"and "recyclable": The FederalTrade Commission, which setsstandards for the use of environ-mental claims in its GreenGuides, is getting tougher ongreen terms.

Proposed revisions to the GreenGuides will make it harder forcompanies to make unsubstanti-ated green claims about theirproducts.

So when is all this happening? AnFTC official we spoke to says therevisions may be final this sum-mer. Until then - and even afterthen, since the guides don't havethe force of regulation - put onyour skeptic's hat when you shopand be prepared to researchlabels before you buy.

1. "Organic": a green term thatreally means something

Organic is the one term in our listthat's federally regulated - by theU.S. Department of Agriculture,to be specific. Product makersmaking this claim must provetheir stuff is "produced withoutantibiotics, hormones, pesticides,irradiation, or bioengineering."Period.

FTC is cracking down on theseterms

2. "Recyclable." After the new

guidelines are adopted, a manu-facturer can use this term with-out a caveat only if a substantialmajority of communities nation-wide have facilities that can actu-ally recycle its product. Beforeyou buy, do your homework tosee what you're able to recyclelocally. Also, take a closer look

when a productclaims to be "recy-cled" (a term that'snot covered in theGreen Guides).

What you really wantto look for is "post-consumer recycled"content. These prod-ucts have been divert-ed from the landfill, soyou're truly helpingreduce the wastestream when you buythem.

3. "Biodegradable."When you see thisterm, you think,"Great, I don't need toworry about throwingthis away; it'll breakdown naturally." Butmany productslabeled biodegrad-able need ideal com-posting conditions tobreak down - andsome won't degradeeven then.

The FTC's new guidelines requirethat products or packaginglabeled "degradable" break downwithin a year in normal disposalconditions.

Heads-up: That means the termlikely won't apply to anythingyou'd throw in the trash, becauseitems simply don't degrade inlandfills. It's far better to reducewaste in the first place than toexpect it to disappear.

4. "Compostable." In the future,products with this claim should-n't take any longer to break

down than the rest of your com-post pile.

5. "Non-toxic." The FTC's newguidelines say that non-toxicclaims should mean the productisn't harmful to humans and safefor the environment. But researchthe product online if the label isvague. And definitely don'tassume kids or pets can ingest itsafely.

The fuzziest green term of all

6. "Natural" is unregulated bythe government. It's not inter-changeable with organic orhealthy, although manufacturerswant you to think if it's natural, ithas to be good for you, right?Not so much. Take ammonia. It'sa naturally occurring compound,but it's also a toxic pollutant.Without context, the word natu-ral doesn't mean much.

A label to help you decide

When you're just not sure abouta product's claims, look for certi-fication by a reputable thirdparty - like Scientific CertificationSystems.

Its green-and-blue SCS label pro-vides some reassurance that aproduct lives up to its claims. SCSsets tough standards for theterms biodegradable and recy-cled content, according to Build-ingGreen, an independent com-pany that educates building pro-fessionals on green certifications.And the label has been around along time.Some SCS guidelines:

•SCS only certifies liquidproducts as biodegradable -cleaners, detergents, and soapsthat break down completely innatural conditions in 28 days.

•Recycled productsinclude a wide array of buildingproducts - windows, doors, insu-lation, carpets, tiles, and more -so seek them out.
