Weekly Wrap Up 33 Nevada is experiencing a slowing of COVID-19 hospitalizations in the southern region and increases within the northern region. We remain cautiously optimistic that Nevada may be reaching the peak of the current wave. However, readers should be aware that even as cases slow, historically, significant case counts remain within the hospitals for close to a month once the peak has been reached. Case counts in the north are growing and maybe compounded by recent smokey conditions and several large-scale events. The increased hospitalized COVID-19 in the northern region is not over-burdening hospitals at this time. There are four changes to the chart from the prior week. Staffing in the southern region has been elevated from a watch to a warning as hospitals report increased difficulties contracting with traveling nurses, and particularly ICU-trained personnel. Nine facilities in the south are reporting staffing shortages. The percentage of patients in ICUs with COVID-19 has been elevated to watch status within the rural region of the state. This status change is based on reports that hospitals have trouble securing interfacility transfers for those patients who require a higher level of care (e.g., Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)). In the south, the percentage of COVID-19 patients in hospitals and within ICUs has stabilized. Hence these statuses' have been decreased to watch from the prior warning status. The Nevada seven-day moving averages are beginning to flatten for confirmed COVID and suspected COVID-19 hospitalizations. This is being driven by the slowing admission rates in southern Nevada. Hospitalizations in the northern region, and a few rural counties, are increasing but not at a rate that is changing the moving average for the state. All-cause occupancy rates in the southern region remain elevated. Multiple hospitals are operating above their licensed bed counts. © 2021 Nevada Hospital Association 1

Weekly Wrap Up 33

Nevada is experiencing a slowing of COVID-19 hospitalizations in the southern region and increases within

the northern region. We remain cautiously optimistic that Nevada may be reaching the peak of the current

wave. However, readers should be aware that even as cases slow, historically, significant case counts

remain within the hospitals for close to a month once the peak has been reached. Case counts in the north

are growing and maybe compounded by recent smokey conditions and several large-scale events. The

increased hospitalized COVID-19 in the northern region is not over-burdening hospitals at this time.

There are four changes to the chart from the prior week. Staffing in the southern region has been elevated

from a watch to a warning as hospitals report increased difficulties contracting with traveling nurses, and

particularly ICU-trained personnel. Nine facilities in the south are reporting staffing shortages. The

percentage of patients in ICUs with COVID-19 has been elevated to watch status within the rural region of

the state. This status change is based on reports that hospitals have trouble securing interfacility transfers

for those patients who require a higher level of care (e.g., Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)).

In the south, the percentage of COVID-19 patients in hospitals and within ICUs has stabilized. Hence these

statuses' have been decreased to watch from the prior warning status.

The Nevada seven-day moving averages are beginning to flatten for confirmed COVID and suspected

COVID-19 hospitalizations. This is being driven by the slowing admission rates in southern Nevada.

Hospitalizations in the northern region, and a few rural counties, are increasing but not at a rate that is

changing the moving average for the state.

All-cause occupancy rates in the southern region remain elevated. Multiple hospitals are operating above

their licensed bed counts.

Northern Data Set

Northern Nevada is experiencing its second well-

defined surge of COVID-19 hospitalizations. Unlike

southern Nevada, there is currently no evidence to

suggest that this wave is slowing. The fundamentals

remain strong in the northern healthcare

infrastructure. We are watching all-cause ICU

occupancy rates for indications of overcrowding

and staffing challenges.

The graph on the bottom left represents all licensed

hospitals within Clark County, including LTACs and

rehabilitation facilities. The charts suggest that the

south is reaching the pinnacle of the current wave.
