There is a captivating encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman in today’s gospel passage. Breaking typical Jewish custom, Jesus approaches the woman and asks her to give him to drink. Through their conversation Jesus reveals to her that he offers living waters that truly satiate our lives. This time of lent reminds us that Jesus is the one who truly fulfills the heart’s desire. We spend many days seeking things that we think will fulfill us. The woman had many previous relationships and Jesus reminds of her this but then invites her to be satiated by the living waters that he offers. This encounter led her to a conversion of mind and heart. It was so impactful that she couldn't hold in what she had experienced. Others came to believe in the message of Jesus because of her witness. She led them to Jesus. During this Lenten season Jesus gives us the same invitation he gave the Samaritan woman. The living water that comes from Jesus is his message of salvation. It is a message of hope and of recognition that the things of this life are passing and that things that are eternal are what truly satisfy us. This is why we fast and sacrifice during lent. It is a spiritual journey of conversion and recognition where we call to mind the things that we give our time and importance too, and see if it is truly good. Through sacrifice we are purged of the desires and pleasures that the world offer and we focus on the things eternal, on God himself. The hunger we feel when we fast leads us to reflect upon our hunger for the presence of God in our lives and to reject the earthly desire we constantly give in to. I pray that this Lenten season may continue to a beautiful spiritual journey you and I. That we may encounter Jesus on the way and be satiated by the living waters that he offers us. I would also like to remind you to be prudent and careful during this time as we deal with the coronavirus. Please continue take precautionary measure everyday by cleaning your hands constantly and watching out for the things you come in contact with. Thank you for your cooperation as we deal with this as a community. In Christ, Fr. José Díaz
GUIDELINES TO STOP THE SPREAD OF
THE CORONAVIRUS
In light of the increasing threat of the spread of the
coronavirus, Bishop DiMarzio would like to reaffirm the
cautious and preventative measures that should be
taken at liturgies in the Diocese of Brooklyn. It is very
strongly suggested that Holy Communion be received
in the hand as long as the threat continues. Pastors
should take the opportunity to instruct the faithful on
the correct and reverent way to receive the Eucharist
in the hand. The distribution of the Precious Blood to
the faithful has been suspended during this time.
Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and
indeed all involved in the liturgy should disinfect their
hands before the distribution of Holy Communion. The
rubrics state that the priest or deacon should ask the
faithful to exchange the sign of peace “if appropriate.”
Prudence suggests that this time is not, in fact, an
appropriate time to do so. Therefore, for the time
being, after the general greeting: “The peace of the
Lord be with you,” the liturgy should continue with the
“Agnus Dei.” Holy water fonts should be emptied and
cleaned on a regular basis. No one should feel
obligated to use holy water upon entering or leaving
church nor should anyone feel obligated to greet the
celebrant (or one another) before or after Mass with a
handshake.
Station of the Cross On Monday, March 2 we will start the Station of the Cross in English (All Lent Mondays) at 7 pm at the church. All are welcome to come and join us.
THIRST Each time today’s Gospel story is read, I can’t help but think of the many television commercials I’ve seen depicting perspiring athletes lifting a beverage to their lips while the scorching sun beats down on them. Our culture has definite ideas about how to quench thirst. Today, those ideas are turned upside down. The Samaritan woman operates, initially, on the TV commercial level. She asks Jesus for the flowing water so that she will not have to keep coming to the well. Jesus then talks about what real thirst is, and how he, and he alone, can quench that thirst. Lent calls us to find those places deep within ourselves where we thirst. In our thirst, as did the Israelites, we cry out to God asking for springs of living water. Deep down we know that only the Lord can satisfy these thirsts.
