Letter from the Pastor of Saint Leo

March 18, 2020

So do not fear, because I am with you;

do not be distressed, because I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you;

I will hold you with my victorious right hand. " Isaiah 41:10

The reflections that pass through our hearts are innumerable, the only way to understand these facts is from the

confidence in the promises of the Lord who tells us in his word "I will be with you until the end of time" (Mt 28,20). We

are going through a historical moment that has been determined with the word Crisis, which from the Greek root “κρίσις”

means “to separate” “to decide”, in other words, it invites us to analyze to make new resolutions in the face of the

challenges that we are living in all mankind. The main values that we have defended since the foundation of the Church

by Our Lord Jesus Christ come to mind: Life, Love, Family, Justice, Peace. What would be of life without that sharing

and without that special touch that each human being that inhabits every corner of the earth has. Today more than ever

we must be united without any distinction; Let me share with you the words of one of the Eucharistic rites of penance

"You who came to heal afflicted hearts, Lord have mercy." Today I am among you as a shepherd to comfort you in your

sorrows, but also as a sheep of the flock to listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

I want to encourage you not to lose confidence or the spirit of prayer, many times we have complained about the lack of

time, or the heavy traffic of the city, or the eagerness of the tasks of life and of this city with a reputation for being the

“City that never sleeps” but now we are forced to change our routines to protect our health and life. I know it has been

difficult for you as parishioners and for us as priests, because we are one body. "If one of the members suffers, all

suffer, and if one rejoices, all rejoice" (1Cor 12,18), let nothing separate you from the love of Christ "Who separates us

from the love of Christ, the tribulation? heartbreak ?, persecution ?, hunger? Nudity? The dangers? The sword? But in all

this we are more than conquerors thanks to the one who loved us, because I am sure that neither death nor life, nor

angels, nor principalities, nor the present nor the future, nor the powers, nor the height, neither depth nor any other

creature can separate us from the love of God, manifested in Christ Jesus, our Lord "(Rom 8, 35-ss)

Now, let this time be a unique “quarantine” like the forty days of Jesus in the desert, that we do not fall into the

temptation to succumb, or think that God has abandoned us. We are in His hands. I want to tell you that I love you very

much, today more than ever I miss seeing you physically present in our parish, my heart and that of the priests of

Saint Leo want to tell you that every day that we are celebrating the private mass our main intention is you, your families

and your needs. I ask for humility and generosity to accept these temporary changes that are only made to protect life,

but I trust the Eternal Father to show us the ways to overcome this evil that afflicts our humanity. We are working so that

our communication is improved through the social media and technology that we have today so that we do not lose

contact. We will keep you informed. Finally, united in prayer for each other, let us keep faith in "Spirit and Truth" alive.

CARTA DEL PARROCO DE SAN LEON

“Así que no temas, porque Yo estoy contigo; no te angusties, porque Yo soy tu Dios.

Te fortaleceré y te ayudaré; te sostendré con mi diestra victoriosa”. Isaías 41:10

Son innumerables las reflexiones que en este momento pasan por nuestro corazón, la única manera de comprender estos hechos es desde la confianza en las promesas del Señor que nos dice en su palabra “Yo estaré con vosotros hasta el fin de los tiempos” (Mt 28,20). Estamos pasando un momento histórico que se ha determinado con la palabra Crisis, que desde la raíz griega “κρίσις” significa “separar” “decidir”, en otras palabras, nos invita a analizar para tomar nuevas resoluciones frente a los retos que estamos viviendo en toda la humanidad. Vienen a mi mente los principales valores que hemos defendido desde la fundación de la Iglesia por Nuestro Señor Jesucristo: Vida, Amor, Familia, Justicia, Paz. Que seria de la vida sin ese compartir y sin ese toque especial que tiene cada ser humano que habita hasta el último rincón de la tierra. hoy más que nunca debemos estar unidos sin ninguna distinción; permítanme compartirles las palabras de uno de los ritos de penitencia de la Eucaristía “Tu que viniste a sanar los corazones afligidos, Señor Ten Piedad”. Hoy estoy entre ustedes como pastor para confortarles en sus penas, pero también como oveja del rebaño para escuchar la voz del Buen Pastor, Nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Quiero animarlos a no perder la confianza, ni el espíritu de oración, muchas veces nos hemos quejado de la falta de tiempo, o del trafico pesado de la ciudad, o del afán de los quehaceres de la vida y de esta ciudad con fama ser la “ciudad que nunca duerme” pero ahora nos vemos forzados a cambiar nuestras rutinas para proteger nuestra salud y la vida. Se que ha sido difícil para ustedes como feligreses y para nosotros como sacerdotes, porque somos un cuerpo. “Si uno de los miembros sufre todos sufren, y si uno se alegra, todos se alegran” (1Cor 12,18), que nada te separe del amor de Cristo “Quien nos separa del amor de Cristo, ¿la tribulación?, La angustia?, ¿la persecución?, ¿el hambre? ¿La desnudez? ¿Los peligros? ¿La espada? Pero en todo esto salimos mas que vencedores gracias a aquel que nos amó, pues estoy seguro de que ni la muerte ni la vida, ni los ángeles, ni los principados, ni lo presente ni lo futuro, ni las potestades, ni la altura, ni la profundidad, ni cualquier otra criatura, podrá separarnos del amor de Dios, manifestado en Cristo Jesús, Señor Nuestro “(Rom 8, 35-ss) Ahora bien, que sea este tiempo una “cuarentena” única como los cuarenta días de Jesús en el desierto, que no caigamos en la tentación de sucumbir, o pensar que Dios nos ha abandonado. Estamos en sus manos. Quiero decirles que los amo mucho, hoy más que nunca extraño verlos físicamente presentes en nuestra parroquia, mi corazón y el de los sacerdotes de san León quieren decirles que todos los días que estamos celebrando la misa privada nuestra principal intención son ustedes, sus familias y sus necesidades. Les pido humildad y disponibilidad para acatar estos cambios temporales que solo se hacen para proteger la vida, pero confío en el Padre Eterno que nos mostrara los caminos para vencer este mal que aqueja nuestra humanidad. Estamos trabajando para que nuestra comunicación se mejore a través de los medios sociales y de tecnología con los cuales contamos hoy para que no perdamos contacto. Los mantendremos informados. Finalmente, unidos en oración, unos por otros, mantengamos viva la fe en “Espíritu y Verdad” Reciban nuestra bendición, la de mis vicarios parroquiales Padre Diego Villegas y Padre José Díaz. FAITH FORMATION PROGRAM CLASSES HAVE BEEN CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

By Conrado Hernández Due to the coronavirus threat, the Faith Formation Program classes have been cancelled until further notice. Sunday classes as well as Tuesdays have been cancelled. It seems that the purpose of the government to declare this emergency is to safeguard a quarantine and, in the meantime, observe the unfolding of events in the eastern coast of the United States. Diocese of Brooklyn’s bishop, Nicholas DiMarzio, recommended this past weekend to close Catholic schools and academies beginning this past Monday, March 16

th. The regular schedule of daily and

Sundays’ Masses has been cancelled. Parents of children and pre-teens are exhorted to watch and listen to the news to find out about the changing of events. In letter sent to the pastors, bishop DiMarzio urges to avoid meetings of 10 people or more, suggesting private Masses instead of public ones, but he highlights that the Masses intentions should be satisfied. The intentions should be made public even without the timing of Masses, because all the Masses will not be public. Churches may remain open for silent adoration, always bearing in mind the need to limit groups. There should be no Communion Services or other types of gatherings such as communal recitation of the Rosary, which would gather crowds. Priests should answer parishioners’ requests who would like to receive Communion. The sacrament of Penance can be administered taking in mind the distance among people and open places should be assigned instead of closed premises. The popular Monday of Reconciliation, at the

beginning of the Holy Week, has been cancelled,

although priests are always available to listen to

confessions during Lent. For the Holy Week the

cancellations are: Palm Sunday will not be publicly

celebrated; palms will be placed over tables to be

picked up by parishioners. The Chrism Mass will not

be publicly celebrated. The oils will be available for

distribution at designated sites around the diocese.

None of the Holy Week ceremonies will be public, not

even in the outdoors. Holy Thursday Lord’s Supper,

Good Friday Passion liturgy and the Easter Vigil will

be celebrated by Bishop DiMarzio in the Cathedral,

without a congregation, and broadcast to the homes

of parishioners. The Easter sacraments for the

catechumens and RCIA graduates will be postponed,

and the First Communions for the month of May will

be postponed as well.

CLASES DE CATECISMO SUSPENDIDAS HASTA PROXIMO AVISO

De Conrado Hernández Ante el peligro de contagio del coronavirus, las clases de catecismo han sido suspendidas hasta nuevo aviso. Tanto las clases de los domingos como las de los martes han sido canceladas. Tal parece que la meta del gobierno es guardar una cuarentena para observar con más claridad cómo se desarrolla la amenaza en el área este de los Estados Unidos. EL obispo de la Diócesis de Brooklyn, Nicholas DiMarzio, recomendó este pasado fin de semana que se cerraran desde el lunes, 16 de marzo, los colegios o academias católicas y que se suspendiera el horario diario de misas regulares así como el acostumbrado y cargado horario sabatino y dominical. No obstante, se les pide a los padres de niños y jovencitos, que asisten a clases, que estén atentos a los despachos de prensa y a los anuncios de los medios de comunicación. En circular enviada a los párrocos, el obispo urge a que se eviten las reuniones sociales de 10 personas o más, proponiendo las misas privadas en vez de públicas, pero hace hincapié que deben satisfacerse las intenciones de las misas, que deben publicarse sin la hora que ha de celebrarse la misa, ya que ésta no será pública. Los templos pueden permanecer abiertos para adoración silenciosa, teniendo siempre en mente que debe limitarse el número de personas. No habrá servicios de comunión o rezo en comunidad del santo rosario, porque estas devociones atraen muchas personas. Los sacerdotes deben acceder al pedido individual de feligreses que deseen recibir la Eucaristía. El sacramento de la Penitencia puede dispensarse tomando las precauciones de la distancia entre personas, así como el asignar espacios abiertos en vez de lugares encerrados. El conocido Lunes de Reconciliación, al principio de la

Semana Santa, ha sido cancelado, aunque los

sacerdotes estarán disponibles para escuchar

confesiones durante la Cuaresma. Para la Semana

Mayor las suspensiones serán las siguientes: el

Domingo de Ramos no será celebrado públicamente; las

palmas serán colocadas en mesas para que puedan ser

recogidas. La Misa Crismal no será celebrada

públicamente. Los óleos estarán disponibles para su

distribución. Ninguna de las ceremonias de la Semana

Santa se hará públicamente, ni aun en los exteriores. La

Misa del Jueves Santo ( la Cena del Señor), la liturgia de

la Pasión del Viernes Santo y la Vigilia Pascual serán

celebradas por el obispo en la Catedral, sin que haya

una congregación, y serán transmitidas a los hogares

para beneficio de los feligreses. Los sacramentos

pascuales para los catecúmenos y graduados de RICA

serán pospuestos. Las celebraciones de la Primera

Comunión del mes de mayo serán pospuestas.
