The host nation for the World Cup does not have to qualify to play in the competition. The other teams—all 209 of them—have to play a series of matches against teams from the same continent in order to qualify for the World Cup. Qualifying for the World Cup is a long process, and some teams can play as many as 24 matches! The prestige and honor of playing at the World Cup is the reward for getting through the qualifying rounds.

The finals The tournament itself kicks off on June 12, 2014 in the city of São Paulo in Brazil, and the final will be played on Sunday July 13 in Rio de Janeiro. The 32 teams will be placed into eight groups of four. Each team will play three group matches, gaining three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for losing. The two teams from each group with the most points will go through to the second round. The tournament then becomes a knockout competition.

Nature and biodiversity

14

How can you make your neighbourhood nature-friendly? Perhaps there’s a nature club in your area that you could join. Otherwise, why not gather some friends and neighbours together to encourage wildlife to your local area?

You can plant herbs and wild flowers to attract beneficial (helpful) insects such as butterflies, bees, and ladybirds. Bees and butterflies pollinate plants, while ladybirds feed on aphids (small insects that damage plants). Make sure the varieties you choose are suitable for your local climate. These are all quite easy to grow:

Herbs: Basil, Borage, Dill, Fennel, Lavender, Parsley, Thyme, Sage

Flowers: Cornflower, Clematis, Hydrangea, Mexican Hat, Zinnia

15

Attracting the right visitorsThere’s nothing worse than planting herbs and flowers only to find they have been munched by insects. Luckily, there are several ways to encourage beneficial insects and deter harmful ones naturally, without harming wildlife or the environment. A popular method is companion planting – combining plants that help each other by deterring pests. For example, plant chives, garlic, or coriander to repel aphids. Dill attracts beneficial insects such as hoverflies and wasps that eat aphids. Find out more at www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/basics/techniques/organic_companionplanting1.shtml.

The benefits of treesTrees play an important role in our environment. In urban areas, they attract wildlife, and provide greenery and shade in summer. In places that are prone to flooding, they retain water and reduce the run-off of water. The School Tree Nursery Programme helps school children to plant trees to improve their local habitat. The children help to raise the saplings within the school grounds, and once they are big enough, they plant them out in the community. In Lewes, East Sussex, for instance, trees have been planted on the floodplain to try to reduce the harmful effects of future flooding by local rivers.

As these bees fly among the buttercups and daisies, they will pollinate both types of flower. Encouraging bees does not mean you will get stung, as long as you are careful.

These volunteers are planting a tree. Once it’s in the soil, they will add mulch and water it.

Eco ImpactOne-third of the human diet can be traced to bee pollination. Bees pollinate crops, so they can be fertilized and reproduce. Bee populations have dwindled, but it’s easy to create a bee-friendly environment. In Stirling, Scotland, the On the Verge project asks schools and community groups to plant wild flowers and nectar-rich plants in the spring to help the bee population recover.
