  • AROUND TOWN6Moon Group meets monthly at library

    By SAM VILLARREAL

On Monday, December 7th at 7pm, Michelle Hawley Whitneys moon group had their monthly meeting. The informal group meets once a month in the Annex Room at Veterans Memorial Library to discuss the new moon and what it will bring in the coming days.

The purpose of the group is to get together with likemind-ed people and to use astrology to focus on self-care, set up intentions for the month that pertain to them personal-ly, and to help them become better people. They want to change the world; one person at a time.

The group is a tiny community, in and of itself. Each member had a different idea of what the meeting was to them; it was considered a class for one and a workshop for another. The members come from all different walks of life and their discussions help them to better understand all types of relationships. The goal of the group is to make each member a bit more mindful of each day.

For Michelle, the moon is the most fascinating part of astrology. The group focuses on it in the context of how it effects everyones behavior. It allows for the members to take a step back and realize they may be acting a certain way because of the moon or they may be able to handle someone elses behavior by knowing the moon will be effecting them as well.

The new moon each month is a time for new beginnings. Its a time to release anything that isnt working and, in a sense, start over. The next new moon is Friday, December 11th at 5:29am and its in Sagittarius. With knowing about Sagittarius as well as their own zodiac signs, the group was able to discuss what kind of month it could be for them. However, Michelle was adamant in stating, Im not a psy-chic,. The group just discusses astrology and what could happen from their knowledge.

Michelle Hawley Whitney, an Alma resident, is not only an astrologist, but a life coach as well. She quit her day job to become a happiness coach, a holistic life coach, a recov-ery coach, a self-love coach, and a dharma and meditation/mindfulness coach. Her local business, Astro Dharma Den, allows her to meet with many different clients. She focuses on each client separately and wont use astrology to help someone if they dont believe in it. Michelle claimed that she just likes to be able to aide in self-discovery. She claims that there is a confidence in knowing this is what I had to do.

If youd like to attend one of the moon meetings, speak with Michelle, or to look into any other events that could be coming up, contact Michelle through the Astro Dharma Den Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/As-troDharmaDen.

  • AROUND TOWN8Medilodge of Mt. Pleasant shows community support

On December 2nd, the staff at Medilodge of Mt.Pleasant honored individuals affected by Alzheimers at their Commemorative Candle Lighting

Hosting a Commemorative Candle Lighting at our facility was a beautiful way for us to honor the residents who we have been lucky to care for in our Memory Unit. It also allowed the commu-nity to take part in that remembrance and really start to raise awareness for the overwhelming need for memory care services and caregiver support that our community has. Sera Henry, Referral Manager, at Medilodge of Clare and Medilodge of Mt.Pleasant

The staff placed over 450 luminaries around their driveway, then lit them in remembrance of those the community has lost to Alzheimers/Dementia. Luminaries stayed lit throughout the evening. The hope was that individuals with the disease, their families, and their cargivers would find comfort in this sign of unity and support.

Alzheimers disease is a degenerative brain disease that currently effects over five million Americans. As this number rises, so will the number of caregivers and family members providing care at home. The Alzheimers Asso-ciation reports that friends and family members are providing an estimated 17.9 billion hours of informal, or unpaid, assistance for those with Alzheimers or dementia.

  • ON NETFLIX32A VERY MURRAY CHRISTMAS

    Review By S. R. COVIEO

As a huge Bill Murray fan, I anxiously awaited the December 4th Netflix release of A Very Murray Christmas, including add-ing it to my queue weeks before it was to be released. Ive been following Bill Murrays escapades since first seeing him on Saturday Night Live.

In full disclosure, I am also a huge fan and long-time member of Netflix, dating back to the times when I eagerly awaited the next red envelope to arrive in my mailbox.

All of that being said, I must say I was intrigued and excited about the opportunity that the Netflix afforded Bill Murray to be, well, Bill Murray. With an incredible cast that includes the likes of George Clooney, Michael Cera, Chris Rock, Amy Poehler, and many more, the stage was set for a blockbuster Christmas special, the likes that havent been seen since the heyday of big bands and dancing tuxedos.

Of course the opposite direction was just as exciting a thought to true Murray fans, including an ad-lib fest ala classic Caddy-shack, or a simple give and take classic skit

sequence that would leave us all in stitches.Unfortunately, A Very Murray Christmas plays like a flat forty minute commercial for some five dollar

pre-production anti-aging cream that will turn your eyelids orange. Not since Osmosis Jones has anything featuring Bill Murray been such a disappointment.

The reality here is that Miley Cyrus saves the last fifteen minutes or whatever with her plethora of mi-cro-tattoos and her authentically tantric voice that resonates just south of sultry. She bangs out a few tunes and helps us forget that we just endured over half an hour of empty promises.

The only other redeeming qualities are the cast, George Clooneys tree singing, and the first sighting of David Johansen since The New York Dolls opened for Rod Stewart.

The long of the short of this is, avoid it at all costs. Or at least just fast forward to when Miley joins the show. Seriously, youd be better off watching an hour of Bill Murray sitting awkwardly on a bed by pausing Lost in Translation at pretty much any scene.

Just seriously watch anything else, anything other than Osmosis Jones, of course.

  • ON NETFLIX 33CLASSIC: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

    LAST CHANCE: BRONIES

BIZARRE: ALICEIt doesnt get much more bizarre than Jan Svankmajers first full-

length film Alice. In a loose adaptation of Lewis Carroll, Svankmajer takes Alice

deep into a world too dreary for make-believe.Prepare to oscillate between marvelling at the originality and

questioning your own sensibility for watching such an infectiously curious production.

Produced in 1988, Alice won Frances Annecy International Ani-mated Film Festivals feature film award in 1989.

The film runs just short of an hour and a half, providing a steady stream of stop-action animation mixed with the only live actress, Kristyna Kohoutova (Alice).

The complete title is Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony.

The world of My LIttle Pony has been around for three and a half decades, but this underground group of adult fans rose up around the 2010 fourth generation animated television series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, which had Lauren Faust as the lead animator.

Fausts vision to propel girl-focused cartoons beyond the giggly tea-party norm led her desire to become an executive producer of the new My LIttle Pony.

Bronies, funded by crowdsourcing, is a 2012 documentary that runs 88 minutes long, and is leaving Netflix on December 30th.

Leaving aside all the controversy that erupted with the release of Go Set A Watchman, Harper Lees To Kill A Mockingbird is almosy unani-mously considered a classic.

The 1962 Robert Mulligan directed film adaptation is one of few exam-ples that a movie can indeed be regarded as highly as its literary original. Because the film was released just two years after the book came out, the two are often seen as counterparts.

Gregory Peck plays the lead role of Atticus Finch, a lawyer in the American south (Alabama) during the early 1930s, who is faced with de-fending Tom Robinson, a black man, who was accused of raping a young white woman.

To Kill A Mockingbird is just over two hours long, and also includes Robert Duvall as Boo Radley.

    Chris Zimmerman

Poweshiek County, Iowa. It appeared as if my days tally of pheasants would be one. With only a single bird in the bag, and a half hour left of legal shooting hours, I set my sights on a sliver of cover that cut diagonally through a cut corn field. My Brittany, Shorty, was up to the challenge. Off he went dashing this way and that sniffing every tuft of grass, knifing his way through the tall, brittle stalks of weeds that resembled shoots of bamboo.

This was no time for a plodding walk, or a scuffing pace. With only a half hour remaining in shooting hours, we flew through the cover. A quarter mile into our sprint, Shorty struck gold, or, more like it, the intoxicating whiff of pheasants. In the time it takes to read this sentence, Mr. Pheasant had busted out of the grass, cackling like a crazed witch. Instead of flying away, the rooster zoomed at me, then banked across the small rivulet of water that was the backbone for the growth of weeds.

In a clap, my 12-gauge roared and Mr. Rooster was sent tumbling eyes over teakettle. He laid in the cut corn, peddling an imaginary unicycle.

Shorty was there to issue the last rights, it appeared. He sniffed the dying bird, then nudged

it with his nose. I encouraged Shorty to fetch, just like we practiced in the backyard, the front yard, the hallway and the kitch-en at home. Hes usually pretty good about bringing stuff back to me, but on this occasion, he left it.

Ugh, I felt myself sigh. We have to work on that.I made my first trip to Iowa in 1992 with my first Brittany, Zack. Little did I realize, but those were the golden days of Iowa

pheasant hunting. Back then, the government used to pay farmers to idle their cropland. What was once row crops, became fields of weeds. The benefactor of that program were pheasants. They flourish in unkempt environs.

Back then, hunters shot about 1.5 million pheasants a year in Iowa. Last year, the number was closer to 200,000. What hap-pened between then and now? Several things.

The government program of paying farmers to idle their land has been reduced. Without places to nest, bird numbers plum-meted. The second reason had to do with weather. Beginning in 2008, Iowa had five winters of 30 inches or more snowfall. Pheasants dont do well when theres a lot of snow.

After several mild winters and ideal nesting seasons, how-ever, Iowa is poised for a comeback. When I called the Iowa DNR and spoke to their game bird expert, he said theyd have birds. That prognostication set the wheels of inertia in motion. Could there really be decent pheasant hunting again? Could it be a shadow of the golden years of yesteryear?

Almost on a whim, I decided to give it a shot. Eight hours later, Shorty and I were in my old stomping

grounds on familiar farms east of Des Moines. We had two birds in the bag, and one to go. A quick look at my watch and I realized we only had ten minutes left in legal shooting hours. We had finished up the sliver of cover and were hustling up a fencerow. Without any notice, a second rooster bolted ahead of Shorty and into the blue, spacious sky.

I didnt have time to aim, or judge the lead. The gun came to my shoulder in one fluid motion. An instant later, the load of chilled 6 shot was on its way to intercept the flying target. Miraculously, the rooster fell out of the sky, but was far from dead. It bounced amongst the corn stalks, picked its head up and dashed over a hill.

Shorty was on the spoor - nose down, tail ablur. Over the hill he went. I followed, but not as close as I would have liked. When I crested the hill, Shorty was in the sliver of weeds where

  • we started. I couldnt really tell if he had found the rooster or if it was still on the lamb. Two hundred yards later and huffing and puffing from the long sprint I caught up to Shorty and asked him, Did you find

the bird?Of course, Shorty didnt answer, but judging by the feathers protruding from each side of his silent grin, Id say he had a pret-

ty good idea of where it might have been hiding. Sure enough, Shorty promptly lead me to the rooster, which completed my three bird limit for the day.

It was a terrific start to our four-day jaunt to Iowa. No, there werent as many birds as 1992, but the hunting was pretty darn good. Our best day we flushed more than 50, which is quite respectable.

Iowa has a wholesome, Midwestern flavor. The countryside, the atmosphere, and the sounds of livestock bellowing in the manure-smelling air reminded me of our agricultural heritage. The restaurant where we ate had smoked beef brisket the first night, pulled pork the next, and prime rib the last. This is meat-and-potato land and the folks we met were as sweet as pump-kin pie.

In Iowa, you have to ask permission from the landowner before accessing their property. I succeeded in that regard, more than I failed, whether I asked face to face or over the telephone. Its a fun place to hunt and there was enough action to keep things interesting.

Pheasant season in Iowa runs through the 10th of January, 2016. Shooting hours are 8am to 4:30pm, local time.

The Mt. Pleasant Career and Technical Education Center provides hands-on technical and professional training for mid-Michigan high school students and adults, and is part of the Gratiot Isabella Regional Education Service District (RESD). Here, students explore real world careers in 18 different programs. Construction Trades courses offer the opportunity for students to be on-site learning the skills it takes to work in the construction field. In order to learn through actual experience on construction sites, students spend much of their time outdoors and need to dress appropriately for any kind of weather. The gear needed is costly, and requiring students to purchase special clothing is not realistic.

In 2015, the Gratiot-Isabella RESD was awarded a grant from the Kellogg Youth Fund of the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation. The grant made possible the purchase of work gear for 15 students. It is estimated that the clothing will be utilized by more than 220 students in Construction Trades. The gear is warmer, safer, and provides a sense of cohesion among those on a construction crew. Local students are excited to break in the new gear as the weather gets colder.

It was a lot of fun doing the lighted Christ-mas parade in Mt Pleasant with my friends Maddie and Emma. Emmas dad decorated the truck so cool with lots of lights and even a lighted crown in the front. It was so much fun seeing all the kids and families enjoying the parade. I know I speak for all of us when I say we have enjoyed our expe-rience so far as the Shepherd Princesses.
