ASHE October 7th Dinner Presented by: Michael Keiser, PE Topic: I-81/22-322 Tanker Fire RSVP by October 3, 2013 Well for some of our ASHE members our kids are back at school; Penn State football season has started and summer is coming to an end. With the fall and cooler weather peaking around the corner, ASHE’s new program year is just beginning! I’m looking forward to the 2013/2014 year. We are looking to add several exciting events to our typical September to May program year. First, I want to thank last year’s board members for all of their hard work and dedication to the ASHE Board. Second, I want to thank all our members that came out to our Past Presidents Dinner this past April. This event was very important to me! Several members had expressed to the board the need to increase attendance at this event and with the hard work from our board members (especially Todd Morris), I felt we accomplished this with 98 people in attendance. Some feedback we heard was the socialization was great, food was delicious and the casino and horse racing was so much fun!! We honored our outgoing President Richard Heimbach and all ASHE’s Past Presidents of which several were in attendance. Please mark your calendar for the 2014 Past President Dinner which will be held on May 1st at the Hollywood Casino (same location). If you didn’t attend last year please plan to join us! Our 15th Annual Scholarship Golf Outing brought in a profit of $8,200. All profits from this event went towards the ASHE Harrisburg Section Scholarship Fund. Last year ASHE Harrisburg Section was proud to provide six scholarships worth $2,000 each. Thank you to our corporate sponsors and all who attended this year’s golf outing. It was a huge success as usual and a special thanks to Doug George for your hard work putting the outing together. Another successful event in August was the ASHE/ASCE/ WTS Annual Picnic and Casino Night. We had a record number of 88 people in attendance. Thank you all who attended and special thanks to the fellowship committee for all your hard work with making the evening a success. Well, we have begun planning for the 2014 ASHE/PennDOT 8-0/PTC Conference. This year we celebrate our 10th anniversary of this event. This year’s conference will be held on April 4th at the same location as last year (The Best Western Conference Center, Harrisburg). Please watch the profile and our website for additional information regarding this year’s conference. Doug George, our current Vice President, is busy planning this year’s program. Our October 7th dinner meeting presentation will be presented by Mike Keiser, PE District Executive of PennDOT District 8-0. A full list of dates and program topics for this year will be available shortly on our website and ASHE Facebook page. Stay tuned for more information. Our Fall Adopt-a-Highway event will be held on October 10th @ 3:00 PM. Please join us at the River Front Comfort Inn, Harrisburg PA. We will hold a happy hour after the clean-up. Please plan to attend to show your support for the section and to help keep our highways beautiful. ASHEHarrisburg Member of the Year

At the Past Presidentsrsquo banquet on April 18 the ASHEHarrisburg Section Board of Directors (BOD) unveiled this yearrsquos Member of the Year (MOY) Jennifer Hendricks If you want to know what can happen if you miss just one BOD meeting ask Jen The board kept the nomination a secret for months but Jen was quick to figure it out at the banquet

The BOD approved her as this yearrsquos MOY because she has unequaled dedication to the Harrisburg Board of Directors She has performed numerous duties often stepping in when others are unavailable She has used much initiative to benefit you the ASHEHarrisburg membership in many ways And she even has a catchy nickname like Hollywood celebrities ldquoJendricksrdquo as Jim Gutshall likes to call her

For instance Jendricks is one of the founding organizers of the ASHE PennDOT District 8-0 Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission annual conference which is attended by half of our section (and a great number of folks from surrounding sections as well) and provides you with continuing education credits for maintaining your Professional Engineer registration in Pennsylvania She also organizes materials for APC Conference and gets the booth together when we exhibit at the ASHENational conference as well Jen is usually (always actually) the person who applies for ldquoexposurerdquo grants to benefit the sectionrsquos public outreach which accounts for hundreds of dollars annually added to the sectionrsquos budget She also does much of the required coordination with ASHENational and put together a great program for the 2012-rsquo13 program year And she organizes things like the Year in Review presentation we present at our Past Presidentsrsquo banquet

Jen has provided invaluable service and continued leadership to the section She has dedicated much personal time and talent and in doing so has earned the respect of the section directors and officers She is our ldquogo-tordquo person for just about anything ndash when there is a question about how something works or how to get something done she knows because she has usually been the person who did the task in the past And more often than not she is usually the person who ends up doing the task in the present

On a personal note Jen works as Vice President of Marketing at H2 Engineering along with her husband Robert Hendricks (a former ASHEHarrisburg Section Secretary) She resides in Dillsburg with her husband and two preschool-age children

Understandably this yearrsquos MOY is respected for her impact and her contributions to the ASHEHarrisburg section We look forward to the 2013-rsquo14 program year with Jen as section president

WHY This is a chance to proudly support your chapter of the American Society of Highway Engineers in helping to keep our highways beautiful For more information please contact Sandra K Basehore Skelly and Loy Inc 449 Eisenhower Boulevard Suite 300 Harrisburg PA 17111-2302 Phone 7172320593 E-mail sbasehoreskellyloycom

PINCHOT MONUMENT

On Tuesday June 25th a hot and humid evening Drew Bitner Dave Walters and Bea Walters cleared away weeds overgrown grass and brush from the Pinchot Monument Marigolds were planted for a splash of summer color and new mulch was applied to the area

The monument is the location of the groundbreaking ceremony on July 23 1931 marking the formal opening by Governor Gifford Pinchot of the 20000 mile Rural Road Program The monument located along the Lewisberry ndash Rossville Road York County was typical of the mud and clay roads which Governor Pinchot pledged himself to make traversable at all seasons of the year

As many members will recall under the direction of ASHE Harrisburg Section President Kathy Weiser there was a rededication of the Pinchot Monument on July 21 2006 (75th Anniversary) The bronze plate was cleaned the four Keystone pins that held it in place on a huge chunk of ironstone were replaced and brush was cleared away

Afterwards numerous people worked to keep the area landscaped but recently it fell to neglect However with the ambitious efforts of Drew Dave and Bea the monument is again a proud testament to the act that revolutionized travel in Pennsylvania
