Not far from the affluent KL neighbourhood of Mont Kiara, a tiny rural

enclave passes the days in stoic calm even as it continues to shrink from the

high-rise condominiums that spring up around it. Kampung Segambut Dalam

is growing smaller with every passing year, but visitors may be surprised by

how strong the community's daily rhythms still are.

Realising that time is running out for the kampung, the photographers of The Print Room

studio and gallery have decided to document its existence before it disappears forever.

Several emerging photographers, including four art students from the nearby Garden

International School, have been visiting Kampung Segambut Dalam day and night to

record the people, animals, shops, stalls and homes that exist under the every-growing

shadow of development.

Garden International School is excited to collaborate with The Print Room in offering a unique opportunity to its Art and Photography students to participate in TPR’s Segumbut Dalam project.

Three of the A-level students--Crystal, Meg and Simone (17 years old)--and GCSE student Linda (15 years old) have joined other film photographers in documenting the kampong not only for this exhibition, but also in contribution to their May exams on the subject.

The students devoted their weekends in the kampong, shooting with 35mm black and white film and then learning how to process and develop their prints in The Print Room. The A-level students were given the theme of ‘Relationships’ by the exam board in February, while the GCSE exam theme is ‘Apart or Together’. In taking their individual approaches to interpreting these themes, the students also focused on the poignancy of life in the village as it faces the imminent encroachment of development.

The use of traditional photography is a fitting choice of media in comparison to the digital formats that are predominant now in Art education across the world.
