“If you would have told me a couple of years ago that we’d sit at an Alpha table, be in a Connect group, or be greeters at a church, I would have pretty much laughed at you,” said Dean Leach. The rest is history for Dean and his wife, Ann Leach.

An invitation has the power to be transfor-mative. In fact, it can be life changing. When Dean and Ann relocated to Georgia from the balmy winters in upstate New York, they found themselves searching for a church they could call home. “We’d go to church on Easter and Christmas, and we checked out other places here and there, but we never felt like any place was really home,” said Dean. And so, as life went on, Dean and Ann continued their search for a home away from home.

Their situation started to change a few years ago, when Dean’s dad, Art Leach, experi-enced Alpha first as a guest and later as a host and helper. Art’s experience with Alpha was so positive that he made simple invita-tions for Dean and Ann, encouraging them to give it a try. Art, often described as persis-tent, larger than life, and not one to mince words, even got some of his buddies to invite Ann and Dean to attend. Inviting anyone to church can be difficult, but inviting your own family is especially so. “We’d be over at my parents’ house for dinner, and my dad would have his friends telling me about Alpha and their experience,” said Dean.

God has an interesting way of doing things. In March 2018, Art passed away, but his genuine intentions for his son and daughter-in-law would extend beyond his earthly years. It was shortly after this loss that Dean and Ann committed to attending Mass with Art’s wife, Sandy Leach, so she would not be alone.

Once Dean and Ann experienced the people of this community, however, their lives were changed. People who encounter Christ de-sire to share that with others, and it was this phenomenon that ushered Dean and Ann home to Prince of Peace. “The first time we walked in, I was thinking, ‘What are we doing here?’ But then we got inside and people were introducing themselves to us and mak-ing us feel welcome. When church ended, we got back in the car and both said, ‘We have to go next week,’” explained Ann.

“To be honest, once my father passed, I thought I was just keeping my father’s legacy alive,” said Dean. Although they initially ap-proached Alpha with some hesitation, Dean and Ann both look back at that experience and laugh. Alpha gives anyone the oppor-tunity to ask life’s biggest questions, and through that welcoming, non-judgmental experience, people build community and discover the meaning of life. As Dean de-scribed, “Now, we’re close, personal friends with everyone from our Alpha table. We started a Connect group together; it was and is awesome.”

2Ann described how Prince of Peace has become their home: “This place has been a beautiful embrace for us — meeting all these people that have now become our close friends. Each week, we’d say, ‘We gotta go, we gotta go,’ and now, this is how we roll.” Dean added, “After that first time coming to Mass with my mom, we walked in here and it felt like we had arrived. It was like, ‘This is it; we’re here.’”

Building a regular prayer life both individually and as a couple has been one of the direct impacts of their experience. Ann and Dean both mentioned that their experience has been spiritually enriching and has challenged them to take a deeper dive into exploring who Jesus is. This journey birthed a desire to grow in their faith rather than simply follow through the repetition of an obligation.

Because of their initial experience of feeling welcomed, Ann and Dean now serve as greeters

on weekends, ensuring everyone coming on campus at Prince of Peace is met with a warm welcome. As the Leaches discern what the Lord is calling them to do next, they advise those of us who desire more to keep an open mind about these opportunities. “This is just a beautiful experience and we want more,” explained Ann.

Have you ever experienced something so good in life that you wanted to share it with as many people as possible? We’ve all gone to a concert, eaten at a restaurant, read a book, or listened to a speaker that was so good we had to invite others along with us for the next time.

Prince of Peace exists to provide a space for all people to encounter Christ, empowering people to live as disciples. This looks different for every person, but it means that we as a community place our sole focus on Jesus Christ. This ensures that anyone who walks through the doors of this church can foster a relationship with Jesus, go out, and just like sharing about a great concert or restaurant, invite oth-ers to experience Him for themselves.

In late spring, we asked this community to help us put a finger on the pulse of how we are doing, together, in this mission. To perform this assessment, we used the ME25 sur-vey tool from Gallup Research, as we did in 2012. The results will help us understand how people view the community and pinpoint areas we can focus on to further our mission and improve engagement. This process is not about boast-ing how “successful” Prince of Peace is or about financial health; rather, it’s about understanding how each of us contributes to sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with the surrounding community. Engagement is about emo-tions, and engaged parishioners will have deep and strong emotional connections to their church home.

¿Alguna vez ha experimentado algo tan bueno en la vida que quisiera invitar a tantas personas como sea posible a tener una experiencia similar? Todos hemos tenido experiencias como ir a un concierto, comer en un restaurante, leer un buen libro, o un orador tan bueno que tuvimos que invitar a otros a escucharlo.

Prince of Peace existe para proporcionar un espacio donde todas las personas Encuentren a Cristo y sean capacitados para Vivir como Discípulos. Esto en la vida real es diferente para cada per-sona, pero significa que nosotros, como comunidad, nos centra-mos en Jesucristo, para que cualquiera que pase por las puertas de esta iglesia pueda desarrollar una relación con Jesús y luego, al igual que compartimos nuestra experiencia sobre un gran conci-erto o un buen restaurante, salgamos a invitar a otras personas a tener una experiencia similar.

El compromiso se trata de emociones y un feligrés comprometido tendrá una conexión emocional pro-funda y fuerte con su iglesia.

Construir una vida de oración constante, tanto individual-mente como en pareja, ha sido uno de los impactos directos de su experiencia. Ann y Dean mencionaron que su experien-cia ha sido muy enriquecedora espiritualmente, desafiándolos a profundizar sobre quién es Jesús y que este caminar ha dado lugar a un deseo de crecer en su fe en lugar de ser una oblig-ación.

Reviewing the results of the survey, we observed the fol-lowing levels of overall engagement at Prince of Peace, compared with the level of engagement of Catholics at other parishes in the United States. Greater engagement is the story we see in these survey results. After four years of effort, we know that The Way has contributed greatly to this progress. However, there is room for more people to engage, so they too can know and experience this amaz-ing community, encounter Christ, and bring others to that experience. Digging into and understanding your responses is key to what we do next. Each survey question falls into specific categories of engagement that define the best places to focus our attention as we continue to engage and build a stronger community.

Over the summer, Fr. Eric asked the parish leadership team — over two hundred people — to come together to pray and discern what to do with the ME25 results and how to move forward with them. After three meetings, we’ve identified five areas of focus that will foster deeper engagement. Our next steps are already underway: We’ve established design teams to draft goals and activities that will build engage-ment in each area of focus. We expect them to complete this task by the end of the year.

The Develop Team provides introductory and ongoing resources to support our mission, “Encounter Christ, Live as Disciples.” Its goal is to assist individuals and teams at all points along The Way. Members of the Develop Team are professional trainers, consultants, those experienced in team development, who have taken a diverse set of skills and have agreed to offer them to our parish to sup-port The Way and its goal of having all of us and our guests “Encounter Christ” in such a way that prompts us to “Live as Disciples”.
