What is the role and responsibility of Private Business Leaders, Government Officials, Academia andSociety in transforming our Cities into Sustainable andSmarter places to live? How can we collaborate and work together to achieve our objectives for a better life? How can new economic models like Inclusive Capitalism help fix the social elevator in our cities? Why Cities with higherGender parity and Social equality become Smarter Cities? These are someof the questions a real Smart City has to ask.
Urban centres drive economic growth and offer economies of scale in productivity and publicinvestment; they are social melting pots, centres of innovation and drivers of social change. However, cities can alsobe marked by inequality, poverty, conflict, violence and environmental degradation.
2018 was a year marked by extreme weather events, social unrest, faster urbanisation andexceptional digital transformations. It was also a year of major initiatives in the Nordic countries andNorthern Europe tackling our most pressing problems like Climate change, Social Equality, HumanRights, Gender Parity and Food Security: The P4G Summit and the International Anti-CorruptionConferences in Copenhagen, The EAT Forum in Stockholm, Nordic EDGE in Norway, the NorthernEurope Partnership for Sustainable Finance in London and the COP24 in Poland are examples of thecontinuous and vigorous efforts for a better world.
But, although substancial progress has been made to mobilize Leadership from business, finance, government and society to tackle these enormous environmental and social challenges that threatenour economies and ultimately our entire human civilization as well as the natural world on which wedepend for our survival, we need to do more.
