theEducation post MONDAY, JUNE 18, 2012 6 Edit Post We live in turbulent times with changes taking place at a fast pace ‘which prompts us to be alert, and take action. The future is dominated by intelli- gence and the only way to achieve this is by “Action Learning”. Mahatma Gandhi said, “Purity of personal life is the one indispensable condition for building up a sound educa- tion.” The words of wisdom of Professor Reg Revans, the pioneer of action learning, said that “Our rates of learn- ing have to be equal to or greater than the rates of change “ and coined the for- mulae [cr= > rch]. He also coined the formulae l= p + q where the letter “l” stands for Learning and “p’ for Programmed knowledge and “q” Insightful, Inquisitive & Intelligent questioning. Professor Alan Mumford complimented this formu- lae by saying l=p+q 2 –where one questions that question. In my years of research I coined the formulae l=p+q ~-questions to the Infinitive!. This surely is Paradoxical & Mystical. However, the more one delves into the body & hill of knowl- edge, the more insight is gained to be a high performer in this troubled world. The story of Action Learning actually began with the Sinking of the Titanic. When this luxury liner went down on April 14,1912, 1400 passengers perished. Angry questions were raised around the globe, how could an allegedly unsinkable ship go down on its maiden voyage. Professor Reg Revan’s father was commissioned to investi- gate this tragedy & found that the planners & builders of the vessel had indeed been con- cerned about the structure, but none of them ever raised their concerns in the company of their colleagues. Their reason- ing was that if no other ”Expert” seemed unsure about the structure & safety of the ship, then it must have already been concluded that the ship was fine. They were afraid of appearing foolish by asking “dumb” questions. This story passed on by professor Reg Revan’s father, so impressed him that he began developing a process in which team members would be allowed and also encour- aged to ask the “dumb” ques- tions. Wisdom & common sense, rather than cleverness, are necessary for solving problems. One should always seek outsiders & non experts for fresh perspec- tives, new questions, and challenge basic assump- tions. Over Seventy Five years later, these fundamental insights still form the roots of Action Learning. What makes Action Learning so pow- erful is its ability to inte- grate the theory & practices of several disciplines? Namely, Education, Psychology, Management, Systems think- ing, Political science, Ethics, Anthropology & Sociology. The benefits of Action Learning are –shared learning at all levels, greater self- awareness & self-confidence gained due to new insights & feedback, ability to ask more questions & be more reflec- tive & the building of improved communications & teamwork. There is a unique & inherent capability being applied simultaneously to five important needs namely- problem solving, organiza- tional learning, team building, leadership development pro- fessional growth & career development. Action Learning derives its power and power from six interac- tive & interdependent compo- nents. The strength & success rely on the efficient & effective interaction of these elements – a problem, a team, the questioning & reflection process, the resolution to take immediate action, the com- mitment to learning & the mentor. There is so much chaos in today’s world that today’s solutions will be total- ly inadequate to tomorrow’s challenges. Sociologists & manage- ment specialists have identi- fied five dramatic, paradigm shifts causing chaos in today’s world and workplace. Action Learning provides a solid resource for successful response to today’s ever changing, ever more competi- tive environment. It provides a means to solve complex problems in a systemic way, so they stay solved. for nearly three cen- turies. The world has been built upon principles of Newtonian physics cause and effect, pre- dictability and certainty, distinct holes and parts, reality as what is seen. Newtonian physics is a science of quantifiable determinism, linear think- ing, and controllable futures. In understanding quantum physics, we real- ize that we cannot make pre- dictions with certainty, that chaos is part of reality. By extension, we must change the way we think, the way we solve problems and deal with such dilemmas as order versus change, autonomy versus con- trol, structure versus flexibili- ty, and planning versus flow- ing. Just as machine technolo- gy create the industrial age, which began in the late eigh- teenth century, today’s com- puter technology has created the information age. A key element of Action Learning is mentor facturing, which is as critical as any action planned & undertaken by a team or organization. Proponents of Action Learning have long recog- nized that what ben- efits the organization most in the long term is the building of its learning capacity and knowledge base. Action Learning possess a superb ability to examine and reframe the most difficult and complex of problems and to identify the most effective ways of solving those prob- lems. The solving of problems and resolution of issues within an organization or commu- nity are a key focus and a unique capability of action learning. I have lived in Papua New Guinea for the past thirty three years and was instrumental in pioneering “Action Learning” in that land. I was the principal consultant for the development bank and involved in training managers and overseeing new develop- ment projects for the country. I also was instrumental in reviving many defunct organ- izations & bringing them to profitability using the “action learning” mode. I also linked them to global networks. I would be pleased to share the many success stories of this transformation that took place in individual lives & organiza- tions. the ultimate aim was to instill “Lifelong Learning” using the ‘Action Learning” mode. They con- tribute incessantly to the ebb and flow of life. One can grasp the enduring value of values by understanding the profound sense of these lines: For Mercy has a human heart, Pity, a human face, Love, the human form divine, And Peace, the human dress. These are some of the values that have inspired humanity through the ages. Jesus, Mother Teresa, Gandhi and now Dalai Lama are among the best known Angels and prophets who have lived these values enriching human life beyond measure. Some other important universal values are Equality, Justice, Fraternity, Tolerance, Co existence, Empathy and Human dignity. In common parlance, one can define values as measure of goodness or standard of desirability. In fact, values and ethics reflect the total belief and aspirations of a communi- ty. They are the sum total of the strength of a society. Values and Ethics are formed on the basis of collective wish and wisdom which are direct- ed towards making human society a much better and hap- pier place to live in. This is the reason, we find values and ethics playing very vital role in deciding the fate and future of a Nation. And it is primari- ly due to their inner strength that a society is able to survive during the period of crisis. It is true, values and ethics uphold a society through thick and thin. But it is important to remember that every society in the world has its unique cherished values. We can understand their true purpose and significance only in rela- tion to the uniqueness of cus- toms and beliefs prevalent in the given society. For instance, India boasts of her prized value called Vasudhev kutumbkam. This value must be seen in the light of the age old customs and tradition of India. Tolerance as a value remains ingrained in the very fabric of Indian Culture. We, as a Nation, have always been an advocate of peace and har- mony among comity of nations. India’s resolve towards promotion of interna- tional peace and security is beautifully expressed in Article 51 of the Indian Constitution. It is important to accept that values and ethics which form the very bedrock of any society are melting fast.
