President's Message July 2015

Greetings Guild Members,

Many of us are retired and I don't know how you transitioned from working to retirement, but I needed some direction or focus to help me get started in navigating these uncharted waters. So I decided to formulate a retirement

mission statement. It is brief and to the point: my mission is to make artful, useful objects.

For me, the artful part (right brain) has been more challenging than the useful part (left brain), and I do make some artless, useless objects which get tossed. But it turns out that the truly important

words in my mission statement are "make" and "objects".

I remember in my early days of quilting the magic of transforming a pile of uncut fabrics into a colorfully organized quilt. It seemed like a small miracle to be able to physically change a group

unconnected objects into a coordinated, meaningful whole. Since these early days, I have learned new techniques and my skills have improved, but the thrill is still there—seeing my idea and the

pieces come together into a tangible object of my creation.

Peter Korn, in his book "Why We Make Things and Why It Matters," states that being given something may produce temporary happiness, but it is the making of something that produces long lasting fulfillment, which is ultimately more satisfying. Even though his craft was woodworking, he

could easily have been talking about quilting.

Lucky us, to have this artful craft of quilting to experience the joy and fulfillment of making objects.

See you all at the Guild Picnic on July 7th!

Kate GrantPresident

Community Services and Drop In and Sew

THANK YOU Cathy Stone for the wonderful, entertaining, and helpful “Tips and Techniques for Machine Quilting”, on 21 May. THANK YOU participants for the attending and the quilting you did. CS cannot be successful without you!

On second thought . . . CS will be “open” on Thursday, June 25, for a work day. If you would like to pick up kits or drop off quilts, come between 10:00 and Noon. If you would like to practice quilting, help make large quilt sandwiches, come between 10:00 and 2:30. Stay for the Make Your Own Salad Social. Plates, utensils, napkins and lettuce will be available – you bring a topping.

NOTE: This is your last chance to pick up kits or drop off quilts until September. I will not have quilt kits at the July picnic nor will I be accepting quilts that night.

Space is still available for the following fun events. I will have sign-up sheets at the June CS day and the July picnic. 25 July – QUILTAPALOOZA, Sugar Pine Quilt Shop, Noon to 9:00 p.m. This all day event allows you to select the hours you want to quilt. Munchies, chocolate, drinks, Miner Moe’s Pizza and quilt sandwiches provided. PRIZES throughout the day.

19 September – Ina Gibson’s “Envelope Quilting”, an easy, breezy way to complete a quilt. Practice on a CS quilt and gain ideas to use on your own quilt. Quilt sandwich provided.

19 November – Lorna Straka: Easy Binding. Quilt sandwiches provided.

2015 Community Service Dates September 17 October 15 November 19 December Distribution on Wednesday, 2nd REMEMBER, there is NO CS in July, August, or December

Quilt Show 2016

Things are moving right along, the "team" is almost in place. One of the changes this year is that there are only THREE (3) meetings, and these are during the day. First meeting is Wednesday, September 3, 2:00 - ~4:00, SDA.

I am still seeking chairs for a few positions . . . I am happy to talk to you about what these will take in terms of volunteer power. Open positions are: Baskets (i have some ideas to make it easier), Publicity, White Glove (simplified this year with just plastic gloves and a few helpers), Equipment co-chair, and Shuttle Bus (organize advertising, one contract and check in with driver during the show). Please help make this team complete. If I cannot fill these by September, I will proceed with alternatives.

Thank you, Marjorie McConnell

Shirts are available for sale with the Pine Tree Quilt Guild logo embroidered on them. You can also have your name embroidered for

no extra charge. These are long sleeve denim shirts. If you are interested, please email me or

contact me at a meeting. The shirts are $24.03 each. Please provide the following:

Size - small, medium, large, XL, 2XL etc. Color - light or dark denim
