President’s Message July 2016

Dear Fellow Quilters,

As I write this message from Germany, the weather has been raining and cool all day. I really miss the California warmth and sunshine. We have had a wonderful vacation in Germany, we spent four days in Rome on a walking tour. Many of you know that I try to walk 10,000 steps every day; however, I surprised myself walking over 68,000 steps in the three days we were there. There is so much history in Rome, we saw a lot but really only a small fraction. I did a Google search and found a minimum of 10 fabric stores in Rome. We found three which gave me a chance to walk in an “pet” the fabric. I didn’t purchase any because room in our suitcase was limited.

When I first started traveling to Germany, to visit my husband’s family, I would bring a small travel sewing machine and work on projects in our “down time”. Over the years I have acquired the use of two very basic sewing machines from relatives. This trip I am using an older Singer and needed a walking foot for a project. We found a store in a nearby village that sold several types of sewing machines where we purchased a walking foot. I brought three projects this trip, a dress for my granddaughter, a quilt top for Community Service, and a tote. I was able to complete all three and found fabric for additional projects.

I really appreciate Sharon Ellisor leading the general meeting and Pat Gillings leading the board meeting in my absence – thank you both so much.

Our next Guild meeting will be the annual picnic on July 5th at the LDS Church on Hollow Way in Nevada City. Please bring a potluck item and be prepared to have fun! There will not be a speaker or a visiting opportunity quilt. I believe our 2017 opportunity quilt will be unveiled.

See you there ! Diane Klose, President

Many thanks to the LADY BUGS mini-group for their generous donation of the bright and colorful cowboy boots

quilt to be raffled off at the Draft Horse Classic in September. Ticket sales at this fun event generate

substantial proceeds which help support all the Guild’s many projects and activities. Led by Carey Daly, this group of super quilters also includes: Carolyn Christiansen, Carole Hribal, Arelius Lindeen, Myrna Lindholm, Mary Kay Perry and Eleanor Sagely. Thanks ladies for so

generously stepping up with your time and talents!

Community Services and Drop In and Sew

A huge THANK YOU to Ingrid Cattaneo for her support of Community Services. Ingrid has offered her services to quilt small quilts and sew on bindings for quilts of all sizes the last few years. At the May CS day Ingrid walked out with 16, yes that is right – 16, quilts. A few needed quilting, all needed binding and labels. Then Karla Rogers gave her another quilt for binding – 17 total. While we receive a lot of support and help from the many volunteers, Ingrid went “way beyond” in May.

CS priorities are always a topic of conversation and they change as local needs change. In 2016 we continue our focus on graduating Foster Youth, local residents who lose their home to fires or other natural disasters, Adult Protective Services, and Nevada County Homeless Veterans. We will continue to distribute quilts to senior care facilities, Salvation Army, Domestic Violence, and other agencies as our inventory allows. Please contact me if you know of an individual or agency that would benefit.

CS Kits available. Select the one that works best for you. MAKE YOUR OWN QUILT KIT – pick a pattern or use your own, select your fabrics, and make a quilt for CS. We have lots of fabrics, including a nice flannel selection, and more arrive each month. KATHY”S KITS – including quilts and pillowcases, are precut and ready for you to sew. BLOCK PARTY – pieces made from a variety of fun fabric orphans waiting to be adopted into 10-inch or larger blocks. Sew precut pieces together into a block and turn them in to CS. Finished blocks will be assembled into tops for baby, lap, or twin size quilts. How easy is this?

CS is still seeking help with a: 1. Co-Chair to monitor CS days when I cannot be there (no board meetings

required). 2. News Watcher – to read The Union and listen to KNCO to know when local residents have a difficult

moment and need help 3. Outreach Coordinator – to contact local non-profits and determine their needs 4. Individuals to help sew on labels; measure, mark, and record quilts; quilt sandwiches; sew on

binding . . . all the things required to finish the quilts and prepare for storage.

Please join us at Eskaton Senior Living on the THIRD TUESDAY of each month, 9:00 – 3:00 unless otherwise noted. Eskaton is off of Ridge Road. Take the Gold Flat exit, one mile up the road. There is a sign on the right, then a left turn lane. There are carts and an elevator to help you to Crafters Corner.

2016 CS DATES – third TUESDAY at ESKATON, 9:00 – 3:00 unless otherwise noted.July 19 August 16 September 20 October 18 November 15 December – NO CS

Cannot attend CS Tuesday or a Guild meeting? I will deliver a kit, quilt sandwich, or quilts to bind to you to work on at home – call or email me. If you know of someone who needs a quilt, please contact me with the details at 265-9787 or [email protected].

Thank you, Marjorie McConnell
