President’s Message….. Hello Quilters~

What happened to spring?  It seems like we went from stormy winter straight to warm summer. The lakes and rivers are full & the days are long. It's a great time of year to be outside, but I've been playing with Migrating Geese.  The speaker workshop, taught by Cyndy Brunz, was a lot of fun and a great way to use up scraps.  (And I happen to have plenty of scraps.)  We plan on showing our quilts at some point.  We’ll let you know when.    July 9th will be our picnic at the outdoor pavilion at the Church of Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ in Nevada City.  The pot-luck starts at 6pm.  Please bring show & tell.  It's a great social event for guild members, so be sure to be there.

Happy Summer! Lorna Straka, President

A big thank you to all of you who stepped up to help with the 2020PTQG Quilt Show. With one committee exception, we have volunteers for all committees.

Kris Cook’s job responsibilities keep her from joining the steeringcommittee for next year. We thank her for her input and help in

organizing the 2019 Quilt Show.

Returning to ‘steer’ the Quilt Show committee again next year are Sophia Day, Susie Hardy, Sue Miller and Mary Serpa. We will be meeting over the summer to discuss our ideas for next year. If you have anything you’d like to contribute, be sure to let one of us know. We welcome your ideas.

Just a little head’s up, this is our second year, and we would love to have you considering the 2021 steering committee positions. Talk to your friends and see if you can organize a group to create your own Quilt Show in 2021.

We look forward to working with all of you over the coming months as we develop ideas for making the 2020 Quilt Show the fun, community building event of the year!

Sophia Day, Susie Hardy, Sue Miller and Mary Serpa

Home Workshop It’s tme for the next Home Workshop, always the fourth Thursday of the month at the Church of Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ in Nevada City. Last month we made chatelaines for name tags with Karle de Prosse. Wow! It was a great was to learn how to quilt as you go and make a crazy quilt. An introduction that is small enough to complete in a day.

By the time you read this missuve, we will have discussed basic quilting supplies, threads and needles AND made a self-facing table topper with Mary Serpa. Coming up next is the traveling quilters’ tote taught by Robi Holmen. It has a place for everything, including a folded cutting mat. This is a repeat class because it filled up early last time and some of us have waited a long time for it to be available again. Sooo, please see Bonnie and Theresa at the Home Workshop table and sign up. You can also call or email them to have them put your name on the list.

August has no Home Workshop. In September it will be Jill Schlageter showing how to make a tissue box cover. This will be a wonderful gift come the holidays. In October Ginny Lee will present a mesh grocery tote. Be on the lookout for sign-ups!

We need people willing to present a skill or project. Please come and volunteer! If you have ideas for projects or techniques you want to learn, please let us know. See roster for contact info.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

No summer off for Commmunity Service ! Our workers are non-stop, working throughout the summer to organize, sew and bind quilts for Community Service. Community Service meets the third Thursday of each month. We always need help putting away donations, cutting batting and locating appropriate backings. Please join us and get to know other members of our quilting community.

We have quilts to quilt and bind. We always need tops sewn and have kits or If you prefer to sew your own top we have fabric and thread to choose from. Quilting and binding for Community Service is a great way to hone your skills! Pick up something at CS to benefit your quilting ability and someone in need!

Each year Community Service donates quilts, pillowcases and pillows to the 10 graduating Foster Youth. When they turn 18 they are considered adults and are pretty much on their own.

In the Fall we’re planning a ‘sew day’ . Watch the newsletter for more information.

Next Community Service Day is July 18th, 9 AM to 3 PM……rear of the Nevada County Historical Society next to the Sierra Presbyterian Church, across from the Nevada County Office of Education and the Forestry Station at the intersection of Gold Flat, Ridge Road and Zion….

See you in September!

Notes from Bernie Kringel…our Program Chair

After the summer break we will all enjoy a lecture and workshop by Colleen Pelfrey of Yuba City.  Colleen is a retired elementary school teacher and now an active member of her guild.  She is a very entertaining speaker and will share her eclectic collection of quilts.  She starts with a few made by her great grandmother, grandmother, and mom, and then moves on to her own quilting and designing journey.  As she shares her quilts, she also shares stories about her quilts or stories that inspired her quilts.  Don’t be surprised if she throws in a quilting song or two.

The following day’s workshop is titled Taking the Dye Out. This workshop is a little different in that you don’t need to bring your sewing machine (unless you want to) and there isn’t a project you need to finish.  Colleen starts with a little show and tell of quilts she has made using DeColourant in the design process.  She then teaches a variety of techniques for using DeColourant on fabric and demonstrates how to use all the different tools she has acquired.  Then she lets you play with her toys and gives you any assistance you might need or want for the rest of the workshop.  Colleen provides all the DeColourant you need during the workshop, and sends you home with a small container at the end.

In October there isn’t a workshop because of the Jamboree.  (Have you signed up for that yet?) We will have a lecture by our very own Sandra Bruce about the ins and outs of Long Arming.  Sign up for this fun workshop by emailing Anne Wilson. [email protected]

NEEDED!

See the beautiful quilt below? It is the

Opportunity Quilt for 2020.

We’re hoping that a group of you will get your creative juices flowing to make

the Opportunity Quilt for 2021. Traditionally it’s made to display at the

previous year’s Quilt Show. So that means we need it by May 2020.

Hope you’ll feel that inspiration and energy to create a masterpiece!

Let one of us know! Sophia, Susie, Mary and Sue

Silent Auction

In the Quilt Show last year we decided to have a Silent Auction at the last minute. Not much time was given for members to create their treasures, and we still generated a few hundred

dollars. But this year is different! We have almost 10 months. With over 200 members in the Guild, if everyone would commit to making one item for the Silent Auction we’d have over 200 pieces of art! Placemats, table toppers, napkins, anything that you think might be something that would earn the Guild a few extra dollars. Please, please please….you have lots of time to make an item or two.

Contact Judy Hamilton for more information. Her contact info is in the Roster.

  Quilting Mini-Groups

We have two new mini groups! We all met May 14th, found out about one another and what mini groups are all about. It was a great get-together and they decided to form 2 mini groups due to size and geography. The groups are as yet un-named but have lots of ideas and energy!

Contact me, Jane Dunnington, for more information about mini-groups. My contact

information is in the roster.

Dear Pine Tree Quilt Guild Friends,

As I leave for my new home in Sacramento, I want to tell you how much you all mean to me.

The lovely cards, flowers and spoken messages at the last Guild meeting were unexpected and very touching. You told me that I had been a part of your lives as a quilting teacher, and in my jobs as Computer Records chair for the guild and Graphics chair for our quilt shows. I loved doing all of that!

Thank you for letting me know that I had some positive influence on you and that I mattered to you and to the Guild. That is what we

all want - to matter!  . . .  and you all matter   . . . to me!

I will miss you all! I will miss our guild! But I will hold you, dear friends, always in my heart!
