Act of Kindness This week’s recipients of the Act of Kindness were Pali Leckie and Briony Pitt. Pali’s nominees said, ’She is nice. She helps others and looks after her friends. She helps when we are sad and she is a kind person.’ Congratulations Pali.

Briony was our first Community Act of Kindness recipient for 2013. Briony was at our local beach with her two daughters when she heard someone calling for help. After ensuring that her children were safely out of the water Briony returned to assist the swimmer and bring her safely to shore. A wonderful Act of Kindness. Congratulations Briony.

From the Principal

I am sure as parents you are reflecting on how quickly Term One has flown by. Congratulations to the Preps and new students on how quickly and well they have settled into Sorrento PS. Staff have been focusing on building productive and positive learning environments, specifically building positive relationships between students and between staff and students. This has been supported by the Bounce Back program, regular circle time and Building Learning Power. Feedback has been positive, with students understanding the routines and expectations within their learning area and home base, resulting in a calm and orderly environment where students feel happy, safe and can learn. My thanks to parents and staff for supporting our children in their learning. Have a well deserved rest and I look forward to seeing you all in Term Two.

Reading to young children: A head-start in life

The Reading to young children: A head-start in life is a study completed by the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research and is part of the Department’s Research and Evaluation Partnership with the University of Melbourne. The study examined the causal link between the frequency of reading to children at a young age and their future schooling outcomes. The findings of the study were reported in The Age on 3rd March 2013 and an overview of the study is available here: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/Documents/about/research/readtoyoungchild.pdf

Key Findings The frequency of reading to children at a young age has a direct causal effect on their schooling outcomes regardless of their family background and home environment.

*Reading to children at age 4-5 every day has a significant positive effect on their reading skills and cognitive skills (i.e., language and literacy, numeracy and cognition) later in life. *Reading to children 3-5 days per week (compared to 2 or less) has the same effect on the child’s

reading skills at age 4-5 as being six months older. *Reading to them 6-7 days per week has the same effect as being almost 12 months older. *Children read to more frequently at age 4-5 achieve higher scores on the National Assessment Program

– Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests for both Reading and Numeracy in Year 3 (age 8 to 9). *These differences in reading and cognitive skills are not related to the child’s family background or

home environment but are the direct result of how frequently they have been read to prior to starting school.

Last week a Prep Information Evening for prospective prep parents for 2014 was held. My thanks to Zoe Richey, Jess Hogan and Pru Ferguson for their organisation of the session. Thanks to: Sue Wearne for attending and speaking, along with Michelle Richens and Lenka Brereton; to Rebecca Grant for sharing questions that she asked when deciding where to enrol her children: to our school captains who spoke most eloquently: Luci Watts and Jonas Eccles and to the students who entertained us with their musical prowess: Josie Bladon, Rye Carlyon, Celeste Robertson, Tao Hollingsworth, Grace Plumridge, Ashleigh Zawadka, Blaise Lewis, Nat Helliwell and Lucy Schlipalius.

Thomas Burgess, Tom Maltby, Alice Schlipalius and Matilda Muir attended a Science extension day last week at Toorak College. These students were offered places at this day as they excelled in the University of NSW Science Assessment in 2012. This is what Matilda Muir had to say about the day:

On March 20, Matilda (me), Thomas Burgess, Tom Maltby and Alice Schipalius went up Toorak College for the day. We participated in three science workshops. These included: Face Your Fears, Up and Atom and Rockets to the

Stars.

In Face Your Fears, we learnt how fear is made in your brain and what process it has to make to achieve a scare.

In Up and Atom, we learnt about atoms. We learnt they are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. We also did a science experiment with beans, which helped teach us how protons, neutrons and electrons make up very important elements of earth and our galaxy.

In Rockets to the Stars, we learnt about N.A.S.A. and it’s space station. We learnt that rockets cannot make sharp or quick turns and usually rockets have their engines turned off unless they want to change course, because gravity carries them the way they are going– this saves a lot of petrol!

We met many nice kids from other schools all over the Peninsula. Overall, we learnt a lot and had heaps of FUN! The Preps, Ones and Twos had a wonderful picnic earlier this week in spectacular weather. They were terrific ambassadors of Sorrento PS and enjoyed eating and playing together. It was lovely to see so many parents join them.

Congratulations to all those students who walked or rode to school last Friday. There were one hundred and thirteen students who participated.

The school holidays would be a great time to get on top of head lice. Please take this opportunity to check your child’s hair and to ensure that it is free of eggs and lice. Your support with this matter would be much appreciated.

Please note that Friday 7th June is a Pupil Free Day. Students will not attend school on this day. Staff will be undertaking professional learning.

Waste Wise

Happy Birthday A very happy Birthday to all children and staff who were born in March.

In third place with 76 percent was 1/2KW. In second place with 77 percent was 3/4L. In first place with 80 percent was Prep F. Prep F will have Leafy and eat popcorn this week. Congratulations to all our Waste Wise winners.

Athletics

Well done to all the students who were involved in Little Aths this season. A big

congratulations to Moby Byrne for placing 9th in the state for discus. He is now being

considered for the state development squad. Amber Grant was also extremely impressive

placing 7th in the state in the 200m. I’m sure they have a great and exciting future.

District Tennis

Sorrento Primary School had terrific representatives in the tennis this year. Celeste

Robertson, Luci Watts, Noah Anderson and Harry Woinarski all played extremely

well in the round robin competition. Noah narrowly missed out on moving through

to the Division level and Harry placed equal first so he is now off to the Division

level in Mornington.

School Triathlon

Once again we had fabulous weather for the event. The students challenged themselves in the 100m swim, 2km bike ride and

500m run. It’s also wonderful to see the great sportsmanship between students and determination to push themselves to the

limit. Results were as follows:

Sustainability

Student Council The Student Council this term has been busy. We recently raised money for the Red Kite Foundation. We raised $384.50. We are now organising another way to raise money, through selling Hacky Sacks, but the organisation is still yet to be confirmed. We need students and families to help make Hacky Sacks. Our 3/4 members from the council will be collecting them in their end of the Cove, so if you could please put in and help, it would be greatly appreciated. They will be sold in Term Two. The 2013 Premiers' Reading Challenge (PRC) is a great way to encourage your children to read more. Each student who takes part will receive a unique user-id and password to log on to the PRC website where they can identify book titles to read as well as record their reading. The more books children read, the faster their reading skills advance and the more satisfying their book choices become. The PRC is a great springboard to get your child hooked on books! Children can request a parent consent form from their teachers or me at any time and get started. The goals set by the PRC for each grade level are very realistic and children have until early September to complete the challenge. The books read for the PRC can also be used towards the MS Readathon. As from 2013, infants and pre-prep children can also join the challenge. The PRC has recognised the importance of reading at an early age because reading to young children has been positively linked to academic success.
