In 1906, a group of industrialists concerned about quality, certification and research in the wool textile sector decided to found a supporting association for competitiveness of companies named Acondicionamiento Tarrasense. Those industrialists knew how to anticipate needs for business collective solutions and laid the foundations of the current concept of technology centre.

Over the years and thanks to the work performed, the entity evolved both to the extension of its activities and to the name that is currently identified with the brand known as Leitat Technological Center.

During these years, our vocation in offering services to companies and entities has remained unchanged, whereas the activities developed, the organization and our internal work system have changed significantly specializing in different knowledge areas allowing the search for the best technology solutions for companies.

The results obtained lately show that the bet developed by Leitat towards knowledge generation and transfer to the productive fabric is an effective model for economic growth in a fast, efficient and sustainable way, creating at the same time new areas and models for talent development and personal performance for all employees.

We can either talk about the crisis or we can focus on how to start getting over it. At Leitat, our stance is to start work now on the post-crisis stage. True to our mission and principles we continue to firmly promote industrial innovation based on technology, raising the level of competitiveness and potential of companies so that they can successfully address new markets.

The economic environment is highly volatile, insecure and highly uncertain. These are complicated parameters on which we have to show greater learning, creativity and innovation. Much is at stake, and Leitat, aware of these difficulties, renews its foundational commitment of support to business R&D, concentrating its efforts on promoting specialized Technology Transfer equipment that can generate collaborative business environments in which to develop a new knowledge-based economy.

Observing the changing environment, we have considered that our cohesive role between the market and research urges us to change in order to: promote technological entrepreneurship, support open innovation with large companies and strengthen international collaboration as a technological networking value.

This report is the annual summary of the activities carried out during 2011, reflecting the involvement and commitment of all those who are part of Leitat in overcoming technological and economic challenges, our aim being to provide solutions for our clients, partners and collaborators, while always respecting our values of promoting innovation and commitment to integrity, responsibility, sustainability and independence of all our actions from management excellence.

With courage and strength to move forward, I take this opportunity to greet you and place myself at your disposal.

aDaSa (CoMSa EMtE)Manuel Farré Torras - Director of Product & Solutions Area

For more than 15 years Adasa has been carrying out R + D + i projects in collaboration with universities and Spanish and international technology centres. Although we have known LEITAT for some time, we had never before worked together on a project. The relations, both professional and personal, with the LEITAT technical team, meant we soon came to an understanding establishing a close affinity between the two entities. Obtaining a CDTI INNPRONTA project is a good example of this. Regarding LEITAT, we value its great technical and organizational capacity and its extensive and well formed networking with leading companies with capacity and interest in the development of R + D + I projects. From the point of view of Adasa, collaboration with LEITAT has been a great which that we expect to intensify in the future.

aED (SPaNISH aSSoCIatIoN oF MaNaGERS) Antonio Ruiz Va. - Member of the Board

I have had several opportunities to visit LEITAT for events on automotive technology, institutional issues and meetings to develop a possible collaboration with a large energy company. I would like to highlight two aspects that I think are crucial to qualify an organization: the processes of relationship with potential clients and their employees (most of them highly intellectually and technologically qualified), and the motivational attitude of such employees supported by the work environment created. On both issues, determinants of the quality of the projects developed and the overall productivity of the technology centre, LEITAT is observed to achieve excellent levels. The nature of the leadership exercised is efficient and innovative, creating confidence in this Centre which is committed to science, technology, customer relationships and researcher satisfaction.

tÉCNICaS REUNIDaSGustavo Díaz Nogueira - Technology Development Division Manager

The R + D + i strategy of Técnicas Reunidas, using its Proprietary Technology Development Division as a basis, is the consolidation of tested technologies and the development of new technologies in different fields, based on the knowledge existing throughout the organization and with a clear commitment to diversification. This diversification strategy, present and future, involves undertaking more ambitious projects in priority areas for the company, while promoting more active involvement with each and every one of the elements that comprise it and the national innovation system . In this regard, collaboration with CTI’s, and particularly with Leitat, is considered essential to successfully tackle diversification projects. Leitat’s knowledge and experience in different areas, and especially in the integrated management of water in purification and treatment, coupled with its industrial vision, make it a key technology partner for Técnicas Reunidas.

LIPOTECAntonio Parente - Group Chairman

For a company with very intensive R & D activity like the companies in our group, the existence of specialized centres such as Leitat is essential for their development; sometimes for the scientific and technical complementarity of their offer and their teams, others for the possibility of joint development of research projects. In any case, centres like Leitat, as well as being justified by the selective work they do, are necessary for the synergies and critical mass they give the territory as part of the R & D network. Our experience, up to now, has been positive and we encourage all the scientific management team to continue in this line of collaboration and assistance in R & D to nearby businesses.

MENSHENRamón Pradas - Innovation Support Center

Menshen, specializing in the packaging sector and in particular in injected plastic caps, is part of the advisory board of the BIP and, through the latter, established new contacts with Leitat, since for years it has performed specific tests on various products and raw materials. During a visit of the Chairman of Menshen, Mr. Knut Menshen, it was decided to establish the Global Innovation Support Center at Leitat to provide coordination and support for all the new technology and innovation needs of the group. The mainstreaming of technologies and its technical knowledge have been crucial to this decision, as well as the environment in which it is located, which is conducive to research and creativity.

ITACAThe ITACA project aims to investigate new industrial and urban wastewater treatment technologies which make it possible to turn the treatment process, efficiently and sustainably, into a strategy for the reuse of substances, products and waste, and energy recovery to minimize impacts on the environment: TOWARDS zERO WASTE.In turn, it will research into advanced intelligent systems for measurement, automation and control of treatment processes aimed at setting up a centralized management system which chooses, automatically and independently, the optimal sequence of treatments of the effluents under study. This project, with a budget of 15.5 M Euro, consists of a consortium of 10 companies which from the start has received Leitat’s support and has been funded by CDTI in the context of the Innpronta 2011 call. Leitat participates as a research agency and technical and scientific manager, supporting companies in research into: new concepts of non-biological treatments that involve a conceptual divergence from conventional treatments; bio-treatments for the removal / degradation of pollutants and for obtaining recoverable products; recovery and utilization of waste and by-products for the production of energy or high added value products, and new sensors for integration into automation and control systems that enable intelligent integration of the technologies developed.

BioConSeptThe BioConSepT project has been funded by the European Union, in the Knowledge Based Bio Economy (KBBE) programme of the 7th Framework Programme, with 13 M Euro, and focuses on the use of second generation raw materials such as lignocellulose, or non-edible oils and fats which cannot be used in food production. From these raw materials, a European consortium of 31 academic and industrial partners will create processes and products that turn them into value-added products that are 30% cheaper and more sustainable than the corresponding chemical routes or biotechnological processes based on first generation raw materials such as glucose. The consortium has chosen to study 7 chains/platforms of chemicals from these raw materials. These production lines will use bioconversions with enzymes and microorganisms and chemical reactions. The introduction of continuous processes, innovative reactors and selective separation processes will be an important step towards reducing costs and improving sustainability. Among the products that will be synthesized are polymers, resins, surfactants and solvents to be tested on market products.Leitat takes part in this project in the production from these 2nd generation raw materials of biosurfactants for applications both in cosmetics and in consumer products (detergents and cleaning products). It will work on everything from the selection of the biotechnological production system to the concept testing and application of biosurfactants in market products. Simultaneously, it will develop a bio-separation technology based on the use of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) that improves selectivity in the separation process thereby reducing cost.

NeogeniusLeitat participates as a research organization in the NEOGENIUS project. This initiative, funded by the CDTI CENIT programme, consists of a consortium of four companies and 20 state research centres, with a total budget of 15.4 M Euro. The project, framed in the area of Biotechnology, Health and Nutrition, deals with the identification of new drug candidates that improve on current therapy for the treatment of inflammatory and neuropathic pain. This project creates a unique collaborative environment where participants interact to share knowledge and results, in order to make a much more efficient development in the process of the discovery and design of drugs for these indications and with a great interrelationship with the project activities.Leitat participates in the CENIT NEOGENIUS by carrying out research activities in the context of studies of adsorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) in vitro of potential drug candidates in different in vivo studies.
