ST MARY’S PARISH CHURCH PAYHEMBURY

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year, an ex-pression which we use regularly and possibly without thinking, it just rolls off the tongue. What do we actually mean? Are we just wishing people happiness for a day, a week, a month or more? What do we mean by happiness? To discuss this fully would take more than this page. But as we share greetings for the New Year how much do we think about what those greet-ings are actually mean, how are they re-ceived by the people to whom we speak or write?

I have found myself this year wishing people a Blessed New Year, now I pon-der, what do I mean by that? Well I mean that I wish people receive a blessing from God, that they receive His love whether they are aware of that or not. I wish that people will feel that they are part of God’s family on Earth, that they are part of hu-manity linked into and connected with something which is bigger than them-selves. If you like, they feel they are part of a huge community, a community which is inclusive and appreciates each member regardless of age, sex, race or gender, or dare I saw it religion. Being part of this

community of God’s crea-tion gives us the security and confidence not only to exist but to be active and productive.

What else might we wish that people are blessed

with? No doubt we think of happiness and health. Happiness can mean differ-ent things to different people so the blessings can’t be personalized too much; it has to be individually interpreted by those receiving it. The blessing of health means not just physical but also spiritual and a healthy outlook on life.

When looking at a simple saying there is so much more than just a few words can say. So as we wish each other a variety of greetings for the New Year just pause for a moment and think of what you actually mean.

Blessings Rev Cate PS Remember, I mean may you be sur-rounded by God’s love to support you through whatever this next year brings.

COFFEE MORNING

Very many thanks to Margaret and Alan Jones for hosting the Coffee Morning in November. It was lovely to receive such a warm welcome on such a damp and dreary day; though it made it hard to face the worsening weather when we left for home!

Alan and I are delighted to be hosting the next coffee morn-ing on 29th January, the last Wednesday in in the month, so we shall look forward to welcoming you to `biricha' (three

doors up from Polly Brook Cottages) at the usual time of 11 a.m. It will be good to meet up again after the Christmas break.

Thanks to our generous hosts all contributions from the Coffee Mornings go to Church funds, for which we wholeheartedly thank them, and those who support us throughout the year.

For more information about the Coffee Mornings, or if you would like a lift please give me a ring on 841828. We are always delighted to see new faces along with our loyal group so do come along for a friendly get-together.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE Marjorie Wright

THANKS FROM LOUISE Thank you to everyone who came to the Tea and Cakes on the 7th December. The nativity play with the sleepy shepherd was so good. We made a profit of £156:00 which will be divided between the Hall and the Pre School. I would like to express my thanks to all the Flower Arrangers who decorate the church so beautifully during the year.

Many thanks, Louise

THE WEDNESDAY CLUB As this report has to be in before we’ve had our final get-together all I can say is I hope we had a good afternoon and thank you to those who joined us. I would like to add an especial thank you to Louise not only for her 100% support but for having run the raffles at each meeting. Without that funding we would not have been able to continue, as we did, for 8 years. Also (because I love playing with figures and statistics) I worked out that there are 8 of us who have been members from the start, all of whom have an almost 100% attend-ance record. You know who you are – so thank you to you also. May everyone have a healthy and happy 2014.

Every good wish………………………………..Joy Morgan

MOTHERS' UNION REPORT

Our Christmas meeting of traditional Readings and Carols was held in the Parish Hall on December 11th Unfortunately the Revd. Cate was unable to be with us. However, our Leaders Paula Beabey and Mary Eveleigh along with all members warmly welcomed our guests; with a special welcome and thanks to Babs Leach for kindly coming to play the piano for us once again.

Paula led the prayers, with special thoughts for Rev. Cate and her husband Paul, who is unwell, meaning they are unable to return home from their holiday in Australia just yet. All good wishes go out to them. The raffle and bring and buy stall were well sup-ported. Following a festive afternoon tea, provided by members, all enjoyed a glass of sherry and Christmas cake with very best wishes for Christmastide. A heartfelt thanks to all for their contribution to a very successful afternoon

OUR NEXT MEETING IS OUR A.G.M. ON WEDNESDAY 15th January 2014 at 2. 30 p.m. in the Parish Hall at Payhembury.

FENITON AND PAYHEMBURY MOTHERS' UNION

Our meeting held on 20th November in St. Andrew's Church, Feniton, was well attended and a warm welcome was extended to members and our Speaker, Mrs. Ann Pangbourne. Apologies were received from Mary Eveleigh.

Our Leader, Paula Beabey led us in hymn and prayers. Notices were given and four members offered to assist at Feniton School's St. Andrew's Day celebration. Members were reminded of the

Christmas Bazaar at St. Stephen's Church, Exeter on 22nd November and of a planned Deanery Day on 27th November at Whimple. Arrangements for the Christ-mas meeting at the Parish Hall in Payhembury were made.

Mrs. Ann Pangbourne then gave us a most informative and interesting talk on Israel and the roots of our faith. Having visited Israel on very many occasions it was most evident of the deep and lasting impression the land and it's amazing history has had on her and she was able to convey the truly moving experience she feels each time she returns there. It was fascinating to learn of the many similarities in the interior of both synagogues and our churches, and of their festivals which coincide with ours. A heartfelt vote of thanks was given.

The meeting closed with a warming cup of tea and biscuits ! Marjorie Wright (Hon. Secretary)

Nature Notes Observations from December

William Garvey, furniture designers & makers, of Upton, are delighted to sponsor Payhembury Parish Paper

Hello everyone

Well, the weather has been unseasonably mild recently. There are still some flowers blooming in the gardens. I saw some roses down near the stream, and we have a few Spring polyanthus in flower already.

However, don't be fooled---it will probably turn colder soon. When it does so, your garden birds will be needing your help, by feeding and watering them. Once the birds know that you will look after them, they will hang around waiting for you. We have some lovely garden birds, whose pretty colours brighten up even the darkest Winter's day. I think the prettiest are the goldfinches, with their red, black and golden colours.

To attract goldfinches, you will need nyger seed, and a special feeder, because nyger seeds are very tiny, and will fall out of a normal feeder. I know this from experience!

There are several bird species around at present. Great tits and blue tits are active on the feeders. We have chaffinches and a few greenfinches. Payhembury has its own flock of Jackdaws, which are playing about in the sky now, some choosing a mate for the coming Spring. Did you know that Jackdaws pair up for life?

I have spotted a few long tailed tits and wrens in our hedge. These are amongst our smallest birds, and many of them perish during the Winter. They have devised a way of protecting themselves from the cold by huddling all together in bird nest-ing boxes or other safe places to keep warmer. Groups of up to twenty have been seen.

When you read these notes, Christmas will have passed, so I wish you all a Very Hap-py New Year!

CLARET’S CORNER by our postie Marty

The Clarets (Burnley FC to those of you who still don`t realise who they are) are currently 2nd in the league, a great place to be at the Christmas period. Recently I was having fun with an aggressive pheasant who regularly attacks me at an address in the village, I can`t tell you the address because it might alert the glebe shoot.

It was sad to hear that Michael Davies has passed away, he was a good man who did so much for PAYHEMBURY and a good friend as well.

MANY THANKS! to everyone who looked after me over the Christmas period.

See you around the village and UP THE CLARETS! MARTY

Girls’ Night Out

There will be NO Girls’ Night Out during January and

February owing to the dark evenings and possible bad

weather. Look forward t seeing you again in March.

We had a very jolly Girls’ Night Out Dinner with 16 ladies attending at the

Six Bells. A Happy New Year to you all.

PAYHEMBURY SPRING BULB AND FLOWER SHOW

If you haven’t already started pre-paring for the show, now is a good time as March will be here before we know it! And it’s also a good

way to keep the children occupied during these long winter evenings.

On behalf of the Bulb Show committee I would like to wish everyone a very HAPPY NEW YEAR 2014

PAYHEMBURY PRIMARY SCHOOL

The last few weeks of term were as usual very busy. The Christmas Fayre was a very successful and enjoyable event and the children sang beautifully. Mrs James and the staff worked very hard with the children and they now have quite a repertoire of songs, hymns and carols. Our next goal is to try

and take the whole school to a music studio to record their singing! The children were also lucky enough to go to Exeter Phoenix Theatre. Our annual visit is always very popular and the children really enjoyed the production of Treasure

Island.

The last week of term consisted of two carol services with Willow Class performing a Nativity in the Church. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without some dressing up and sparkling angels! The school also had a Christmas lunch and a Christmas party. Year 5 won a new trophy called Fair Play in the tournament at The Kings, Sports hall Athletics. It is a really super trophy that is now being displayed in the office. Future Dates 6th January 2014 - First Day of Spring Term 17th-21st February – Half Term 4th April - Last Day of Term The school is always at church on Thursday mornings (9.15am) so anyone is welcome to come along and join us. We would also welcome any volunteers who might like to help in school. We are always very grateful for any assistance.

Payhembury Weather www.payhembury-weather.co.uk

Rainfall: Both November and first half of December have been much dr ier than normal with no big rain storms. The second half of December looks as if it will be much wetter in time for Christmas.

Temperatures: November was close to average but December is shaping up to be well above the norm so no white Christmas in prospect.

Weather elsewhere: The biggest storm surge for more than 60 years hit along the east coast of England on Friday 6th December. In 1953 a lesser surge resulted in 307 fatalities in England. The reason the impact was much less this time was due to much better warnings well in advance and the flood defences put in place since 1953 protecting 800,000 homes. North America has been getting much heavier snow than usual in early December with snow even as far south as Texas.

The Devon Oil Collective Many people in Devon still rely on oil fired boilers to provide heating and hot water. The Devon Oil Collective is a membership organisation that bulk buys heating oil and keeps the prices low.

So far this year we have ordered over 510,000 litres of oil for our customers and saved them an estimated £22,400. That’s an average of £44 you could save on each 1,000 litres of oil you buy.

You too can join the Devon Oil Collective through our website www.devonrcc.org.uk/c/63/the-devon-oil-collective or by calling 01392 248919 ext*290.

Ottery St Mary Tennis Club – Sponsorship Opportunity

You may have read in the local press that Ottery St Mary Tennis Club has been allocated land at Strawberry Lane, Ottery on which to provide two full size tennis courts on a per-manent basis. The club currently has the use of the School multi use games area but suf-fers from not having a permanent base for practice, matches and junior player develop-ment. The newly negotiated 50 year lease for the land gives security and develop poten-tial in the longer term.

The Committee are hoping to raise the greater proportion of funds by grants from sports orientated bodies but this will still leave the club a significant amount to find to allow the project to proceed.

The committee would like to offer you/your company the opportunity to become a found-ing sponsor with the significant long term benefits that this would provide. These include

1 Sponsorship plaque acknowledging your assistance to be prominently sited in clubhouse.

2 Permanent end of court windbreak with your company’s logo and catch phrase.

3 One life membership for any member of your company.

4 Opening day photo opportunities and sponsor benefits.

The committee consider that there would be a maximum of 5 local founding sponsors and hope that you would be interested in considering this opportunity. The Club is asking for a one off sponsorship offer in excess of £5,000 to qualify for founder status and trust that the annualised cost is a reasonable level for a high quality of local advertising. The cost is tax deductible and therefore very efficient method of achieving local recognition for a philanthropic gesture.

The committee would like to offer you/your company the opportunity to become a gen-eral sponsor by asking for a one off sponsorship offer in excess of £250 to qualify for an entry onto the Club’s sponsor board to be erected in the club house. The cost is tax de-ductible and therefore very efficient method of achieving local recognition for a philan-thropic gesture. If you are unable to consider founder status the club is offering lower levels of funding support packages and the committee would be pleased to help you in any way.

Any level of funding support would be helpful and the committee would be pleased to help you in any way should you require additional information on how to make your pledge.

The Club and committee thank you for your consideration of our project.

Development in Feniton—Letter to Editor

As most of you are no doubt be aware, Feniton has an important appeal inquiry

starting on 7th January into a mass development of 235 houses spread around the village by three separate developers. The hearing was to be held in Feniton Bowling

Club, but East Devon District Council have bowed to pressure from the developers (Wainhomes) to move the appeal hearing out of the village to the Flybe Training

Centre at Exeter Airport. Not only will this make it difficult for people to attend to hear an appeal that will greatly impact on their lives, many people will be unable

to commit to going at all. It is nothing like as convenient as popping down to the

village for half an hour. It does, however, speak volumes of how worried the devel-opers are that the people may protest in large numbers.

So we are asking our friends and neighbours at Payhembury to support us if they

can. If you can make it to the appeal all well and good. If you are someone who would have gone to the hearing in Feniton village, but cannot spare the time to

commit to the Exeter venue or indeed cannot get there, then please contact me on 850212 and I will add your name to the ever growing list of people in the same po-

sition. At the time of going to press, East Devon District Council are unable to issue

a definite timetable apart from stating that the appeal starts at 10 am on Tues 7th January and runs for 8 days (Monday 13th not being a hearing day)

Many thanks for taking the trouble to read this and please wish us luck.

Val Jones, Tree Tangle, Green Lane, Feniton

A Personal Plea

I feel that we in Payhembury should support Feniton as I hope they would support us if we ever found ourselves in this situation. Also please just take a minute to

consider the following with possibly a hundred or more cars taking the short cut to Cullompton/the M5:

- our current worries about the road bends by the shop and the school

- the fact that our parish council considers a pavement by the shop is needed to help this problem

- the number of cats who get killed by traffic going too fast (when will it be a child?)

- the parents with children walking down Barrow Road, plus dog walkers

- how long would it take to cross the railway in Feniton and how long would the queues be?

Such issues should be a huge worry for Payhembury and if you agree please try and turn up at the inquiry, even if it is just once, to give support to Feniton in its fight

against inappropriate development and in hopes of keeping our village safe and

quiet. Sue Derbyshire

Dear Supporter

We wanted to say a huge thank you to you for all of your sup-

port during 2013, we really do appreciate all of the help you

give us throughout the year, without your invaluable input we would not be able to reach so many of the local people and

spread the word about Hospiscare.

Whilst we are contacting you rather than bombard you with lots of e-mails please find attached information about our first 3 major events for 2014. We understand it proba-

bly not be possible to include this now before Christmas but if you had room to include all or some part of the information in a forth coming edition we

would be very grateful for the extra publicity for our events in 2014.

Thank you once again for your support, should you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us.

Hi, I hope you have had a great Christmas and are looking forward to a fun filled New Year. What a month it has been, while Rev Cate has been away we have seen lots of different people in church doing lots of things, I wonder if she knew what was going on. We were sorry she missed the Christmas Tree Festival, what a lovely time we all had. We mice really enjoyed running around the different trees and swinging on the baubles; Parchina took a nasty tumble and nearly broke a glass ball, saved only by a dangling piece of tinsel. Then we had Amanda and Andy’s wedding, oh that was lovely and the church looked so nice as the trees were still there. We like to

watch weddings from the top of the screen, do you know when there is a wedding, Mum mouse puts on her best dress and even a hat! The children from school sang so beautifully for the Carol Service, we always enjoy hearing them singing and there was lots of other lovely singing at all the services over Christmas. I’m afraid Parchina and I got told off for playing in the stable, Mum told us that we must look at Baby Jesus and think about God’s love coming into the world and not try and knock the donkey over. We also had a lovely Christening, little Jack may not remember how close to Christmas it was when he gets older. Well we must dash; we have to help Mum and Dad get ready for our New Year party. We have invited a lot of our field mouse friends to join us for a big party, we have been storing away lots of goodies and we want to share them with our friends who are out in the cold.

Happy New Year, Parchie and Parchina.
