The Christmas tree became popular inEngland around 1840 when QueenVictoria’s husband Prince Albert broughta tree over from Germany and put it upat Windsor Castle. The Royal couplewere captured in a newspaper standingaround the tree with their family andever since the practice becamefashionable and a great tradition.

Christmas trees were first decorated withcandles to remind people of the stars inthe sky at the time of Jesus’ birth. Withthe advent of electricity, coloured lightsreplaced the candles. Trees were alsodecorated with sweets hung by ribbons. The first tree ornaments went on sale atWoolworths in 1880.

And today we still like to place an Angelon the top of the tree as a reminder ofthe Angel that brought the shepherdsglad tidings of the birth of Jesus.

When I first suggestedto my mum that I wasthinking about whatcould be done for a‘blue Christmas’ she

was really quite shocked, until I explainedthat ‘blue’ meant feeling sad or down andnot something rude!

I love Christmas and New Year, the familytraditions, carols, mince pies and peoplecoming together to celebrate the birth of atiny baby boy born to poor parents in aPalestinian backwater. A birth whichshould have gone unnoticed; but a birthwhich has changed history and the lives ofcountless people.

For some people, Christmas can be lonelyor something to just get through. Forothers, the absence of loved ones is oftenfelt more keenly and the thought of a NewYear just brings dread.

Perhaps for Mary and Joseph, at that firstChristmas, their feelings were pretty muchthe same - they were far from home, surrounded by the scent of scandal. Notwelcomed by the people of Bethlehem, theyprobably just wanted to get through thistime safely and without any fuss. Marymust have been terrified to be away fromher family at such a vulnerable time, as shegave birth in an animal shelter.

It was in their vulnerability that God gavethem signs and assurances of his blessingand love. Shepherds came to visit themwith news of angels - all because theirbaby was the promised Messiah.

Centuries of traditions and celebrationshave meant we’ve lost touch with therawness of Mary and Joseph’s situation. The excitement of waiting to see what theJohn Lewis advert will be has eclipsed theway God reached down amongst thepoorest of humanity and blessed themwith a baby whose name means ‘God withus’. Jesus brings hope into our lives, especially at Christmas. He gives us theassurance that we don’t have to begin theNew Year alone if we trust in Him.

God is with us whether we’re feeling fineor simply can’t wait for the year to end.

The Light shines in thedarkness, and thedarkness has notovercome it.[John 1:5]

THE VICAR WRITES

For some people, Christmascan be lonely…for others, theabsence of loved ones is often

felt more keenly.

Are there practical things we can do tohelp those for whom Christmas may be‘blue’? A friendly invite, an offer ofcompany, a promise to pray or an offer tojust listen and ‘be with’.

Thinking of those who will be wonderinghow they can feed their family overChristmas perhaps check out theChristmas wish list for the Foodbank anddonate extra.

Bring a present for a child to the ‘CarolsRound the Tree’ service on Christmaseve which go to the Charles ThompsonMission in Birkenhead.

May I wish you a Christmas where youknow God’s presence in the gift of hisSon and that the light he brings willjourney with you into the New Year.

May the Lord bless youand keep you; the Lordmake his face to shineupon you and begracious unto you; theLord lift up hiscountenance upon you,and give you peace, bothnow andforever more.Amen.

No one can change what I’m goingthrough. There are no words to make a difference:No answers or solutions,To make things easier for me.

Help me not to resent those who want tosay they care.Help me to know that even when I amlonely, I am not alone.

Give me companions for this journey,Supporting me,Cheering me,Praying for me,For whatever I need.

For so long as it takes……And maybe I can learn to lean on thatlove.

(Andy Raine)

Why would we give up our warmbeds for the night in the middle ofDecember?

A small group of excited and willingyoung people from our churchgroups will be taking up thechallenge on Friday 8 Decemberfrom 7.00pm - and will be seekingsponsors for this worthwhile cause.

We will be having a big ‘sleepover’ inchurch, some fun and games andhopefully some sleep! Funds raisedwill be distributed via the ChurchUrban Fund.

The scheme offers help and supportto people in England who need it themost. They may be struggling withdebt, homelessness, isolation, addiction, abuse or violence.

Whatever challenges they face, the‘Advent Sleepout Challenge’ will helpus reach out to even more people, offering practical solutions to helptransform lives locally.

It's not an attempt to recreate thedesperate conditions many will findthemselves in this Christmas, but afun way to raise awareness andmoney to help those who need it.

When talking to clients at theFoodbank recently, I have beenembarrassed to realise thatproviding them with three days’emergency food supply wasignoring their main needs. Ofcourse, knowing that you will beable to eat for the next few days isvery important, but it was obviousthat these people needed someoneto advise them on how to apply forfinancial help, to speak on theirbehalf to officials, or to guide themon ways of reducing their debts.Like most Foodbank volunteers, Ihad neither the experience nor thetraining to give them this kind ofhelp. Unfortunately, I also hadvery little idea of where to suggestthey looked for the advice andsupport they needed.

What we call ‘sign-posting’ hasrightly become an increasinglyimportant part of what we do asFoodbank volunteers, but whereassome volunteers have a goodknowledge of where to pointpeople to find the help they need, many of us do not.

So the Trustees have now decidedthat we will concentrate on sign-posting to three organisations:Energy Project Plus, CitizensAdvice Wirral and InvolveNorthwest.

Posters and leaflets giving thecontact details for theseorganisations will soon be madeavailable to all DistributionCentres. Even though the help weourselves give is short-term andlimited, we will also be able topoint people in the right directionto get more long-term guidanceand help inhandling thedifficulties theyface. This willbring us closer tofulfilling ourvision of endinghunger and poverty in our area.

In 2016 between January andOctober, Wirral Foodbank fed andsupported 9,849 people, including3,275 children. This was an increaseof 18% on the previous year.

42% of all food donated to WirralFoodbank comes from localChurches – its biggest contributor!

There are a variety of reasons whypeople use the foodbank.

The chair of the all-party House ofCommons Work and PensionsCommittee, Frank Field, MP forBirkenhead, recently highlightedthe plight of families waiting toreceive the new universal benefit.

He said that the waiting time forthe new benefit would pushmany families ‘to the brink ofdestitution’ in the run-up toChristmas.

Frank Field went on to say in arecent Commons debate that themain foodbank in Birkenheadwas looking to acquire an extra15 tonnes of supplies to enable itto manage the expectedexplosion in demand in the runup to Christmas.

An extra 15tonnes of supplies

is required to enableWirral Foodbank tomanage the expectedexplosion in demand inthe run up toChristmas

Wirral Foodbank wish to thankall at St Nicholas’ Church forits continued support.

‘Liverpool Renaissance Singers’ is an ‘Early Music’ choir of about 30 singers, originally formed in 1965. The choir performs music of the Renaissance and earlyBaroque periods, usually unaccompanied. The choir's voices include soprano, alto, tenor and bass ranges, as well as counter-tenors and female tenors.

The Liverpool Renaissance Singers regularly give recitals in the Lady Chapel ofLiverpool Cathedral, typically in December and March. They also make a numberof other appearances, within local churches and other secular venues in the NorthWest as well as farther afield. Only between eight and ten recitals are given eachyear so the parish is very fortunate to welcome them back for a return visit.

An event not to be missed…so bring along friends and family!

‘Jesus told his disciplesabout … their need to pray

always and not to loseheart.’

Advent, Christmas and New Year areupon us and it is always an extremelybusy time. Rowland Crook (formerChairman of the Retired ClergyAssociation) has written eloquentlyabout the need to make space for a‘Quiet Time’ to spend with God alone:

‘As I give thanks for my friends andfamily, and for my Church … I havefound that the God who speaks inScripture inspires my thoughts.’

‘Quiet Time’ is so important andsomething in which we can all share, especially those who are our IndoorMembers.

The October Mothers’ Union meetingwas well attended. The Rev. JackyBellfield delivered an entertaining andthought-provoking talk about herexperiences as a Methodist Minister.

HYMN STORIES

Hark! The herald angels singGlory to the new-born King!

Peace on earth and mercy mildGod and sinners reconciled!Joyful, all ye nations riseJoin the triumph of the skies; With the angelic host proclaimChrist is born in Bethlehem!Hark! The herald angels singGlory to the new-born King!

Christ, by highest heaven adoredChrist, the everlasting Lord;Late of time behold him comeOffspring of the Virgin’s womb.Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;Hail the incarnate DeityPleased as man with man to dwell;Jesus, our Emmanuel!Hark! The herald angels singGlory to the new-born King!

Mild he lays his glory by,Born that man no more may die.Born to raise the sons of earthBorn to give them second birth.Risen with healing in his wingsLight and life to all he bringsHail the Sun of Righteousness!Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!Hark! The herald angels singGlory to the new-born King!

One of Charles Wesley’s most famous hymns, the carol was written in 1738.

Charles Wesley, brother to cleric John Wesleyand together with fellow cleric GeorgeWhitefield founded the Methodist movement. Itwas John Wesley’s sermons that swayed theminds of people in England – but today it is thehymns of Charles that are sung throughout theland.

" " is a Christmascarol that first appeared in 1739 in thecollection Hymns and Sacred Poems, Wesleyhad requested and received slow and solemnmusic for his lyrics, not the joyful tune expectedtoday. Moreover, Wesley's original openingcouplet was:

Hark! How all the welkin rings,Glory to the King of Kings

The popular modern version is the result ofalterations made by various hands, notably byWesley's co-worker George Whitefield whochanged the opening couplet to the familiar onewe know today and by Felix Mendelssohn.

In 1840—a hundred years after the publicationof Hymns and Sacred Poems—Mendelssohncomposed a cantata to Gutenberg’s inventionof the printing press. It is music from thiscantata, adapted by the English musicianWilliam Cummings to fit the lyrics of ‘Hark! TheHerald Angels Sing’, which forms the words andmusic of the carol we know today.

Any tall roses have been reduced byone-third to save any wind rockaffecting their roots. Buff Beautyand Rosa Mundi have been slightlytrimmed as they were both growingwild.

Many birds have returned to thegarden feeders: Blue, Great andLong-tailed Tits; Robins; sometimesa lone Jay inearly morning;and of courseJenny Wren, often heard andless frequentlyseen!

Tasks to be getting on with:

¤ Divide congested clumps of herbaceous perennials

¤ Finish planting spring floweringbulbs

¤ Clear fallen leaves off flower bedsif conditions are wet

¤ Check any bulbs, corms, tubersand bare root plants fordamage or rot.

¤ Start eating those storedvegetables and think aboutplanting more winter squashnext year.

THE ONSET OF WINTER

Dodging showers and gales were thenorm whilst attempting to prepare thegarden for winter.

All the tubs and pots have now beenstripped out and replanted with springflowering bulbs. There is a small borderat the rear of the greenhouse which wasin great need of attention. A largeRosemary bush was removed togetherwith masses of Lily-of-the-Valley whichhave now been planted in differentparts of the garden.

Compost was added to the border andthis was planted up with springflowering bulbs. The small short pathwas also much neglected and the samehas been cleaned (husbands can be veryuseful!) .

The Sedum Maximumand Skimmia are nowflowering and addcolour to the garden. So too do theHydrangeaheads which have donnedtheir autumn colours. These will soonmake lovely arrangements anddecorations indoors.

The geraniums will shortlybe brought indoors so that they willhopefully survive the winter months.

CHURCH CLEANING

St Nicholas’ Churchis looking for a fewextra volunteers tohelp clean thechurch.Currently we havesix volunteer teams of three people. Each team takes on the weekly task fortwo specific months of the year. Thisway the duties are spread between theteams over the full year and arehopefully not too onerous.

So far these teams have done anamazing job and we are very grateful. However, several members of the threeteams are no longer able to continueand it’s too big a job for just theremaining helpers. But, with a few extrapeople spread out amongst the sixteams, it would be quite manageable.

Could you, or even you and a friendvolunteer to join a team and helpmaintain our beautiful church?

If you wish to volunteer, please contactBeth Crossley 336 4770Cathy Helm 07471 890 827

To help those who wish to know their Biblesbetter, especially the more difficult bits, inSeptember we started The Bible Book Clubbased upon the resources from the BibleSociety beginningwith the Book ofRuth from the OldTestament.

The idea is that we each read an agreed bookof the Bible individually or even listen to apodcast of it (various apps are availableonline). The background resources will beavailable at the back of church to help peopleappreciate the context of the book beingstudied. It won’t always be a whole book asmost of them are too long.

Two parallel Book Club meetings are runningeach month. Anyone can come along and talkabout what they’ve read and share in thediscussion and questions. For those whowould just like to do this at home, thequestions are on the resource sheet.Whichever way you choose to do it theresources are there to help us all engage withand learn more about some amazing people inthe Bible and of God’s ongoing story.

The Book Club meets on the secondWednesday of each month at 2.00pm (venuesalternate) or on the third Tuesday at 8.00pmat the Vicarage
