THE BIG 3Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time

visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to

be involved in 3 ways:

WORSHIP ON THE WEEKENDSGather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray and lift up

the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Faith Kids (infant-5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the

opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.

CONNECT IN COMMUNITY

Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a

better way- Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This may

be through a Mini-Church, Bible study or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.

SERVE OTHERSJoin a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses, serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover

the joy of serving.

Just a few weeks ago I had the incredible opportunity to spend a weekend in Lake Geneva, WI with a bunch of young adults for our Catalyst Winter Retreat. It was a powerful weekend, and from the beginning, the leaders and I resolved that we would do everything possible to facilitate a weekend full of what we’ve coined: “messy community.”

Messy community has become a significant ideal for the leaders of Catalyst as we’ve tried to practice it together. Our experience with each other has been that the only way to truly know someone is to authentically embrace all of that person, brokenness included. This is how we put the messy in “messy community.” Some of the most significantcommunity experiences I’ve had in my life have been with our leaders as we’ve tried our hardest to remain authentic with each other.

This kind of community doesn’t just happen on its own however. There is no messy community in the wild. Restaurants, neighborhoods, and sports teams may come close but are inevitably only imitations of the real thing—kind of like a Rolex watch spelledwith two L’s. Community in the wild has some value, but, compared to the real thing it might as well be a bad counterfeit.

So what is the mark of authentic community? It’s the presence of the Lord. We can only truly know ourselves in the Lord, only experience our own messiness with the bravery given by the Holy Spirit to see ourselves truthfully. Messy community is only possible, only valuable, when it happens around the presence of God.

That’s what makes this picture from our retreat so significant to me – it quite literally captures a community gathered around God’s presence. The realities of community are meant to exist as a function of the church’s worship, not apart from it. The Israelites camped around the Tabernacle (Num. 2:2). The disciples and locals gathered around Jesus at mealtimes (Matt. 9:10).

God is meant to be at the center of our communities. This is why if you attend Faith Church long enough you will inevitably hear a gentle encouragement to participate in a mini-church, serve in a ministry or simply connect with someone outside of the weekendworship experience. We are to share not only the message of God and experience of worship, but our very lives (I Thess. 2:8), messiness included. It is in the convergence of God’s presence and God’s people that we can become fully honest, fully human and fully alive.

I’m so thankful that community is one of our chief values at Faith Church. The presence of God can be found at Faith Church. Messy people can be found at Faith Church. If you’ve never experienced community of authenticity and value, be assured, it can beexperienced at Faith Church.

THE VALUE OF COMMUNITY

Because we loved you so much, we were delighted

to share with you not only the gospel of God but our

lives as well.

I Thess. 2:8 NIV

Q: What’s your name?A: Dee and Jennifer Wilson

Q: Where are you from?A: From south suburbs of Chicago

Q: How did you first get connected to Faith Church?A: Dee came to play for the young adults ministry years ago with Vinnie Adams. Dee introduced Jen to Faith Church, and Jen has been serving at Faith Church Hammond since its launch. Dee and Jen were married in April, 2014 and Dee made his official transition over to faith in February 2015.

Q: What have you seen God do at Faith Church?A: We’ve seen God move in several groups of the church, like Faith Kids, The Gathering and Intersections. Just the ministries that are constantly reaching out to the community and those who need to hear the Gospel.

Q: What do you enjoy about the worship services?A: Being worship leaders, we love to hear the voices of the members lifted high in worship. It’s so nice to step away from the mic and hear the children of God singing praises!

Q: Where do you serve at Faith Church?A: Dee serves at the Schererville campus as the Cam-pus Worship Leader. Jen is serving in Hammond and Dyer as a Worship Leader and Choir Director for both campuses.Q: How do you connect with others at your campus?A: Lately, we’ve been really connecting with the leadership teams here at Faith. Being new to the staff community, it’s been a blessing to meet new families and hear their stories. Dee has been connecting with the Schererville set-up team and building relationship there. Jen has been connect- ing with more of the vocalists and choir members at several campuses as well.

Q: What have you seen God do in your life?A: With this last year being a huge year of transition, we’ve seen God continuously confirming our move here as a couple and encouraging us about being here at Faith. The support we’ve received this past year as we started our life journey together has been incredible.

Q: Anything else you want to share?A: We are just excited to be in a community with so many loving and Christ-following people. We are so grateful for all of the support and encouragement from the staff and members here.

THE VALUE OF WORSHIPwritten by Craig Slings

Page 9: The Paper April Issue 4 Vol. 2

As the son of a pastor, I grew up attending a lot of worship services (obviously). In my young mind I thought everyone went to church. I was taught and still believe today that going to church and worship-ping God was important. As I grew, I quickly under-stood that the world offers many things that vie for our worship. Worship being something we naturally do and something God made us for. Worship, bringing glory and honor to God.

So what is the value of worshipping our Lord and God? Reflecting on this brought a few thoughts to mind. While not a complete list, it will help start a conversation.

Worship REMINDS us of who God is and what He has done and continues to do for us. Worship songs, prayer, the Holy Spirit and the Bible help us in remembering.

The Lord GUIDES us in worship. He gives us His Spirit, which is present during worship, to guide. John 16:13 - “…he (Holy Spirit) will guide you into all the truth…”

The Bible points out that worship GROWS the church (Acts 2:42-47). As people worshipped, the Lord “added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”

In worship we EXPERIENCE God’s peace (Philippians 4:7), RECEIVE God’s joy (Psalm 4:7), and are TRANSFORMED as we “behold the glory of God” (2 Cor. 3:18).

Worship is one place where your relationship with God is evident, bringing glory to Him for who He is and what He has done.

Worship requires a simple approach – no conditions other than to come as you are and seek God. He will meet you there and continue to transform you.

I believe God uses worship to develop our relation-ship with Him beyond the cross. We often focus on the cross and for good reason; if it wasn’t for the cross, we wouldn’t have the faith and hope that we do. Our faith is more than just accepting Jesus as our Savior. Worship fosters a deep and growing relationship that reveals aspects of God that we’ve never known. The more we worship Him, the more we become who He made us to be.

Worship is God’s gift to us to transform us, guide us, re-align us and grow us into who He wants us to be. The Bible shows that God takes us on a journey bringing us from a perspective of life that is aware of “me, myself and I” to the point where we grow in the understanding of who God is and who we were created to be. God takes us all on our own journey through worship.
