Unbalanced Oldies. Dr Brett Kirkland - BEACH ROAD VET CLINIC I was out on a house call when I received a phone call from back at the Veterinary clinic. Friends of mine had rung up in a distressed state because they thought their old cat "Gregor" had been poisoned. Luckily, we were just driving past the end of their road and arrived within a few minutes. I was instantly relieved to see Gregor was suffering from a common old age affliction known as "geriatric idiopathic vestibular syndrome" which is Vetspeak for old animals who have lost their balance and we don't know the specific cause. The condition is most upsetting to owners as their old pet is falling over, unable to walk, may have a head tilt and its eyes may be flicking side to side in a bizzare fash-ion. Gregor had vomited also, this happens because they think the world is spinning and they may have a sort of mo-tion sickness.

The organ of balance is the vestibular system comprising: part of the inner ear, centres in the brain and the nerve con-

nections between. The telltale nystagmus (flicking eyes) told me that Gregor had a vestibulitis (impairment of the organ of balance), that it was most likely central and af-fecting the right side of the brain. A large number of these cases are extensions of otitis (external ear canal problems). I checked Gregor's ears with my otoscope but they were fine, agreeing with the central location indicat-ed by the nystagmus. "Idiopathic" means we haven't figured out a general cause for the condition yet. It is still useful as we can still describe the condition, assess different therapies and know what to expect when we come across it. I have seen many cases now and they have nearly all made a full recovery within 2-3 weeks. Although it is possible a central lesion may be a brain tumour this is quite rare. It is more likely to be a concussion, infection or vascular problem (i.e. like a stroke). I gave Gregor an anti-inflammatory injection that is quite potent for brain tissue swelling and a course of antibiotics. I told his skeptical owners to confine him in a dark quiet room so that he couldn't hurt himself while in this state. I informed them there was a good chance he would be himself within 2-3 weeks but in the mean time he may need motion sick-ness medication. Gregor indeed made a rapid recovery - I phoned the next day and he was already nearly normal. He had also been allowed out of his confinement room already. The next week when I visited everything was back to normal com-pletely.

BOOK REVIEW The Comet Seekers by Helen Sedgewick

Who among us hasn’t gazed at the sky above and not wondered about the millions of others who are sharing the same view? Space has the dual  effect of humbling  the human existence and strengthening ideas of a common humani-ty.  With  her  debut  novel,  Helen  Sedgwick takes that common astronomic fantasy and weaves a whimsical tale of family, love, and magical realism. François, born  to  the young, adventurous Severine,  is  raised  to love the world for its wide horizons. As a young boy he goes on small adventures with his mother, and expects grander ones to come as he grows older. Severine, however, is soon caught up in the ghosts of  their  family’s past. At every comet  sigh ng,  their ghostly rela ves visit the family home. The comets are a blessing and  a  curse,  and  the  possibility  of  a  grand,  adventurous  life  Severine envisioned for herself and François quickly diminishes. For Roísín, the comets are her key to freedom. Having grown up in a small Irish village, Roisin has longed to map the mysteries of space. The only thing that might hold her back is her strong bond with her cousin. Liam, uninterested in space, is content with life in the small village, determined to rebuild his life around a tragic childhood. François and Roísín meet  in Antarc ca, a world away  from  the rest of the world, where the sky seems to be at your finger ps. They are immediately pulled towards each other, and with their mee ng, two over-arching narra ves intersect.

This is a beau fully wri en story and I was blissfully happy ge ng lost in it. Sedgwick conjures  up  enchan ng  landscapes;  green-flecked  Sco sh  cliffs,  expansive  Irish  paddocks, cobbled Paris streets, and magical skies abound. The fantas cal was such a  large  part  in  the  ordinary  lives  of  these  characters.  The  presence  of  the  supernatural and extra-terrestrial are a constant  reminder  that  life can be exci ng and  limitless.  The  story  is  quietly  drama c,  with  great,  tragic  acts  with  the  in  between everyday moments of wonder and joy. The  narra ve  is  character-driven,  alterna ng  between  Roísín  and  François’s  perspec ves.  It  jumps  between  past  and  present,  using  the  advent  of  comets throughout history  to map out  the  significant  events  in  the  characters’  lives.  This fragmented style works surprisingly well, and Sedgwick  leaves enough clues for the reader to connect the dots. There are constant parallels throughout, and everything converges with Roísín and François’s mee ng. There’s a sa sfac on of everything coming full-circle. This book will  certainly appeal  to  readers who  loves  family  sagas, and mysteries of  the past finally being  laid  to  rest. As with  life,  the  story  contains  tragedy  and  sorrow, but there’s also humour and hope. It’s a book to fall in love with, so don’t deny yourself the pleasure.
