On the road again! Dr Brett Kirkland - BEACH ROAD VET CLINIC A large, 13 year old, ginger & white cat came in looking very sad for himself. I had been looking after for him for over a decade. He was a much loved companion who regularly accompanied his owners on many road trips. Sad-ly, he lost one of those owners just before I saw him.

He was off his food and he had a rag-ing temperature of 40.3 degrees Cen-tigrade (normal for cats is 38.5 C). He’d had a few cat bites & abscesses over the years & this was cat breeding season so I expected he simply had been in a fight. I gave him an anti in-flammatory, a course of antibiotics & thought that would be that. Next day, at his check up, he had temporarily improved but then deteriorated, his

temp was 40 C. Still, maybe he just needed a bit more time for the medications to get on top of the infection. Next day, check up & his temp. was normal & he was feeling better. He seemed to recover. Two months and one road trip later, he came in again. He had recovered but was not fully back to normal & he had lost weight, normally, he was a very full figured cat! His temperature was normal but this time he had a large palpa-ble mass in his abdomen. I gave him a corticosteroid injec-tion & booked him in for an exploratory laparotomy. The most common internal mass in cats is a lymphoma tumour & I wasn't surprised when he came back for surgery to find

the mass greatly reduced. Lymphoma’s respond to corti-costeroids quite dramatically for 1-2 months but not long term. In this circumstance, we attempt surgery with the contin-gency that if the mass is non-operable we don't wake them up! Before the surgery, a radiograph indicated the mass was in the left kidney but I could not tell if it had already spread. I opened him up & found the mass in the left kidney but as far as I could see there was no evi-dence of the mass spreading. I removed his left kidney and we sent a sample off to the lab. This confirmed it was a renal lymphosarcoma (a malignant lymphoma in the kidney with an unfavourable prognosis)

Kidney tumour The problem is that at some stage it will spread, it only takes a couple of cells to infiltrate somewhere else before the sur-gery & they will already be grow-ing. My patient made a good recovery from his surgery & his one kidney was enough to keep

the old boy healthy. He went on to have a few good months before the inevitable happened but before that he was soon be travelling again!

Ron Melville’s ‘Property Pulse’ © PRICES RISE—Numbers ok

February sales improved on January but in Papamoa they were not ‘on fire’. 47 house-type sales is ok and again the 700k price range dominated with 18 sales for 38%. Of interest is the $901k-$1m+ price bracket that saw 9 sales which means prices above $701k controlled 57% of the market here in Papamoa! Just goes to show where the market is right now!

Stock numbers are steady at 231 but of note is that the number of sections appear to be at 12-month lows.

In the future this may lead to buyers having to focus on more established homes for sale vs. building due to a lack of sections—time will tell.

Our office has (as always) been ‘humming along’ and we continue to see a stream of out-of-town buyers shopping for an own home and some investors are now been seen.

Eves Auctions are doing ok too with nearly 80% selling over the

standard 90-day marketing period. Owners should not over-look that this method can still provide an opportunity to achieve a better price if one is to be had.

By time you read this, ‘Daylight Saving’ will have changed (1st April) but chances are buyers will still be here shopping.

Talk to me about the changing market, you know what to do—invite me a round for a cuppa!

If you would like a copy of all the January results (can also include The Mount’s as well if you would like) contact me now by email or text.

Book Review 61 Hours - Lee Child

After some big city and terrorism-fuelled plots recently, in 61 Hours Child takes Reacher back to his transient roots, on the highways and byways of backcountry America. A skidding bus leaves the wander-ing ex-military policeman stranded in a blizzard-bashed small town that’s straining at the seams thanks to a federal prison opening nearby. Once Reacher convinces the over-stretched local cops he’s not an out-of-town hitman sent by a ruthless Mexican drug lord to silence an elderly witness, he finds himself roped into protective detail. Battling freezing elements, and rare self-doubts, he turns his attention to the drug-running bikers squatting next to a mysterious stone building on the prairie. But are they the real danger?

Child delivers another taut, exciting thriller. A gripping page-turner that will have readers chattering their teeth in sympathy for the coatless Reacher battling Arctic cold and unseen dangers, while also revealing a bit more about the popular hero – who in effect is a modern day cowboy, a 21st century knight errant or Ronin samurai traipsing from place to place, trying to stop those who put the world to wrongs. Child builds momentum well, slipping in some nice twists and turns, as well as unexpected and rare Reacher self-reflection and details about his military past, to keep everyone guessing on the way to an explosive climax and cliff-hanger ending.

Easter treats Ditch the chocolate eggs this Easter and give a White Wabbit. This high quality, 100% cotton tea towel is neatly gift wrapped and perfect as it is, or wrap some hot cross buns in one to take to a new neighbour. Available from our hospice shops for $14 each, or purchase online, where you’ll also find a list of other outlets.

Charity Shops We’ve got the district covered when it comes to quality secondhand goods. Katikati to Te Puke and almost every-where in between, come and visit! Make a day of it and do an op shop crawl with a group of friends and a set budget. Even better, bring something to donate, and do some shopping while you’re there. Check out the maps and locations on the Shops tab at www.waipuna-hospice.co.nz. Supporting our shops helps our care and support of patients and families.

We’re always keen to see makeover projects, outfits or upcycling that you’ve achieved using purchases from our shops so feel free to post them on our Facebook page WaipunaHospiceTauranga. We also have an Instagram page if that’s more up your alley.

Keep in Touch ‘Like’ us on Facebook and visit www.waipuna-hospice.co.nz to keep up with the latest in education and fundraising events, or to register as a volunteer.
