The

Oleikan Oleika Clowns Meet

1st Thursday at 7:00pm

Well, it looks like Spring may

finally be here to stay. The

building committee has been

hard at work and could use your

help. Contact Harry Rice PP, or

Doyle Rambo and volunteer for a

project.

I just returned from the SASA

Mid-Winter meeting in Savanna,

Ga. Lady Ruby and I repre-

sented the Oleika Shrine Temple

and we had a great time.

I drew Lucky number seven in

the parade line up for Myrtle

Beach. The Mayor and City

Council welcomes all Nobles and

expects a six hour parade.!

I met with the Onion Committee

Chairman, Ill Sir John Che-

ney PP, and we discussed the

onion sales. The supplier

says the Onions were coming

along nicely and we have se-

cured 93,000 Lbs. Due to

weather, the Onions may be a

few days late this year. The

price is fixed at $10.00 per

10lb bag. Lady Ruby and

I are looking forward to see-

ing you all at the Potentates

Ball on May 15th. Lady Ruby

and many others have really

worked hard to see that this

will be a great event.

A Message from Your High

Priest and Prophet

May and June is going to be

a busy month for your Tem-

ple and we hope that every-

one will chip in and have

fun in the many events that

we will be having. In May

we have the Fun Fest at Pi-

geon Forge, I expect that our

units will be the best in the

parade; I do know that the

Legion of Honor will be well

represented at the event.

Onion Sales will be deliv-

ered. We will have our Po-

tentates Ball on May 15th

PAGE 3 VOLUME 59, I SSUE 3

I have accepted the position as Office Secretary and look forward to assisting the Temple Re-

corder, Larry Looney, with your needs.

*REMINDER: The rental season is coming into full swing, so book your events soon while

dates are still available.

With the Hospital Day follow-

ing. Then we will have the Mt

Laurel parade on the 22nd.

For June we have only one pa-

rade scheduled; The Danville

Brass Band Parade. We hope

to see all of the units there.

The Divan is preparing for the

Imperial Session in July and

they will do their upmost to

keep all of our hospitals up and

running. If you have any views

on any subject that may come

up at the Imperial Session, be

sure and let one of your Divan

members know. One vote can

make a difference, so let us have

your opinions.

As always, remember that the

Shrine is the playground of the

Masonic Order and that we have

fun helping children. If we do

not have fun, then, we will not

feel like helping the children, so,

get out there and have fun. If

you have a fun thing going on,

don’t forget your High Priest

and Prophet, he likes to have

fun too.

Yours in the Faith,

Gordon H Barger,

High Priest and Prophet

From the Recorders shape. Call the temple(277-

I attended the Recorders

seminar and came away

with some good material to

better the workings of this

office. Also, for your inter-

est, the Imperial Office has

some new web sites I think

our Nobility will be inter-

ested in. One is Shriners

Village

Go there and it will put you

onto other sites that you

should be interested in.

Ill Sir Chuck and I attended

the S.A.S.A. Spring Confer-

ence. It also was very infor-

mative. Oleika Temple will

be in the 7th Position in the

Myrtle Beach parade. Ill Sir

Chuck drew us a good start-

ing (cont pg 13)

There’s a lot happening at

the Temple these next two

months. Check the Calendar

in this issue. We Still need

local workers to help the

complete the work they are

undertaking to get the tem-

ple and grounds in 1st Class

A message from your Oriental

Guide, Barry McCaslin

Hi Nobles! Hope everyone is

doing well. I would like to

thank the Nobility for allow-

ing Lady Sandy and I the op-

portunity to attend the Ori-

ental Guide school in Tampa.

We Both had a good time and

learned a lot about the

Shrine.

There were 187 Nobles and

125 ladies that attended. We

met a bunch of good folks

from all over North America.

I’d like to talk about 2 web-

sites that the Shrine now has.

The first is beashriner-

now.com. This website is

very informational about the

Shrine and Masonry. If you

have a prospect ask for infor-

mation, after talking to them,

you can refer them to this web-

site.

Another Website is for Shrin-

ers. It is shrinersvil-

lage.com. This website has

many recourses available for

the Temple and Nobles. One

thing you can do is sign up to be

a virtual mentor to prospective

members. I will have cards

available to explain how to log

on to Shriners Village. I recom-

mend all Nobles check out these

websites when you can. Lady

Sandy and I would like to con-

gratulate Queen Kerry Benson

on her Installation of Akielo

Temple, Daughters of the Nile.

Thank you again for your sup-

port and if you need anything

My contact information is in the

calendar book

Ill Sir Chuck has a real

treat in store for nobility

this year in a Potentates

trip.

This years trip will be a bus

tour of Charleston, Savan-

nah Jekyll Island and Pi-

geon Forge. Included in the

price of the trip will be

Transportation, lodging,

Step-on Guides, Breakfast

each morning, Trolley tour,

Ft Sumter Boat ride taxes

and luggage Tips.

Day 1-2, This Morning we

board our modern motor

coach at the pick up point in

Kentucky and get to know

or reacquainted with the

other travelers as the jour-

ney leads through Asheville

and on towards South Caro-

lina. Charleston is our des-

tination for two nights and

it is considered a show place

of the southeast. The

homes, historic shrines, old

churches, lovely gardens,

winding streets and intri-

cate iron lace gateways that

all lend to her charm and

dignity. The stories of how

Charleston has survived

wars, Hurricanes, and epi-

demics make for a very in-

teresting city tour with our

step-on guide. The after-

noon of the second day will

be highlighted with a boat

ride to Fort Sumter. Of

course it would not be com-

plete without adequate time

at the Old Market Place in

downtown Charleston.

Day 3-5 We head down the

coast to a wonderful city

called Savannah, America’s

first planned city. On arri-

val, we once again pick up a

professional guide to show

us the sights of this very

charming his-

toric city. It

was estab-

lished in 1773

and later be-

came Geor-

gia’s first

Capital city.

You’ll certainly enjoy the

legends and history of this

fine southern city from our

tour. There will be plenty of

time to enjoy the shops and

restaurants down on the

river walk in Savannah on

the 4th day. A pretty nice

time don’t you think? On

the 5th day we travel south

along the coast of Georgia to

an area called the Golden

Isles with it’s vast marsh-

lands, pretty rivers and rug-

ged beaches. After arriving,

we are treated to a trolley

tour of the Jekyll Island

Historic Landmark District,

one of the nations largest

restoration projects. The

Rockefellers, Vanderbilt's

and J.P. Morgan built

“grand Cottages” along the

240-acre river edge and they

are really something to see.

After lunch in the area, we

tour St. Simons Island and

enjoy the grounds and ceme-

tery of the beautiful and his-

toric Christ Church. Before

leaving the area, we will

stop at the old lighthouse for

photographs and shopping.

We return to Savannah for

lodging which

means we have

not had to fool

with suitcases

for a few days.

Day 6 Depending

on the time you

wish to have in Pigeon

Forge, There are at least

two or three routes we can

take from Savanna. Regard-

less, it will be a nice ride to

a town that was primarily a

farming community until

1940, when adjacent Great

Smoky Mountains National

Park, whose headquarters is

10 minutes away, was dedi-

cated. Today, Dolly Parton

has turned the area into a

circus atmosphere which

means there’s many things

to do.

Day 7 we return to Ken-

tucky with a few photos be-

cause this is a real memory

maker. Please come and be

a part of the fun with us.

Potentates Trip this year to be a real blast! May 24th through May 30

Pull tabs a Great success! Nobles,

Nobles Tom White

and his cohorts have

collected many Can

Tabs and have

traded them in for

the mere sum of

$4285.00.

Noble Tom, Dennis

Gambrell, and

Spooner, packed out

the tabs loaded them

up and took them to

cash in. The money

goes to benefit The

Cincinnati Hospital.

Great Job Nobles.

Keep up the Good

work!

A Message From Akielo Queen Kerry Benson I would Like to thank

Oleika Potentate Chuck

Kendrick for providing this

space in the Oleikan for

Me.

This space will be used to

inform the Nobility and

ladies of the events of the

Daughters of the Nile.

On March 28,2010, In the

presence of about 90 mem-

bers and guests, I was in-

stalled Queen of Akielo

Temple, Daughters of the

Nile. Immediately follow-

ing my “crowning”, “We

put Children First” was sung by

Queen Elect Karen Grant from

Al Ansar Temple #117 in

Greenville, SC.

The song set a joyous and emo-

tional tone for the remainder of

the installation.

The speeches that followed rein-

forced our commitment to the

Shriners Hospitals.

I want all Nobles to know who

the Daughters of the Nile are

and what we do to help the

Shriners with the “Worlds

Greatest Philanthropy” . If any-

one has any questions about the

Daughters of the Nile, please

feel free to send me an e-mail at

[email protected].

Let us all work together in har-

mony to help the special chil-

dren at Shriners Hospitals.

A schedule of the summer

events for Daughters of the Nile

will be in the May-June issue.

Nobles,

We are well into Spring and the

weather is great and very wel-

more things we need to work on for

our Temple and Supporting our Po-

Lady Mary and I had a great time

in Tampa at the Assistant Rabban

Spend a day or Weekend in Maysville

Tri-County Shrine Club would

like to invite you to a 2 day

event, the 7th Annual Pig Out

in Maysville BBQ Festival.

Last year we received

$10,000.00 from the festival for

the Transportation Fund from

the 2 day event.

We are going to have even

more activities this year. We

are going to have entertain-

ment for the kids to give them

something to do, such as a

climbing wall supervised by

the Army, and it’s free.

The Festival starts Friday,

Sept 17, 5pm to 10pm and Sat-

urday the 18th from 12pm to

10pm. We hope to have 15

contestants cooking for prize

money. If you are interested in

entering as a contestant please

call.

The Cook-off judging starts

on Saturday at 4pm.

We would like to have

some volunteers to help us

judge and run a booth and

if some of the clowns would

come it would be great. We

also bring our parade vehi-

cles and about every hour

run them through the

streets.

Please come and join us for

a great time and wear your

fez to show support. You

will enjoy the best BBQ

ribs, pulled pork, chicken,

and brisket available. In-

stead of just a day, come

and join us for the week-

end, we have some nice mo-

tels. Bring your kids or

grandkids and have fun

helping Shriners help Kids.

Laurel County Shrine Club News

The Laurel County Shrine

Club works tirelessly to sup-

port the Shriners Hospitals for

Children. The 2010 budget

just for the Lexington Hospital

is over 16 Million Dollars. In

the Past 4 to 5 years the Lau-

rel County Shrine Club has

given the Lexington Shriners

Hospital for Children over

$400,000.00. Over

$1,000,000.00 has been given

to the Lexington Hospital since

the beginning of the Laurel

County Shrine Club.

At the present time, there are

over 200 children from Laurel

County alone being treated at

the Shiners Hospital in Lex-

ington. All of the Medical ex-

pense for these children is pro-

vided at no cost to the family.

Transportation to and from the

hospital is also provided free of

charge.

The Laurel County Shrine

Club has a full range of fund-

raising events to help raise

money to cover the cost of pro-

viding free medical care for the

children. The 2010 fundrais-

ing will begin the 28th and

29th of May at our Bluegrass

and Bluegrass Gospel Music

Festival. This Festival will be

held at the Laurel County Fair

Grounds and the local club will

also be operating their food

booth to help raise additional

funds.

In June the Laurel County

Shrine Club will be operating

their food booth at the Archery

Competition to be held at the

Laurel County Fair Grounds.

Also, in June the club holds a

Motorcycle Ride to help make

money for the hospital.

July 4th, the Club has their

food booth at Red, White and

Boom. As soon as the July 4th

Activity is over the Food Booth

gets moved back to the Fair

Grounds for the celebration of

the Laurel County Fair Week.

September is also a busy time

for the club. The Club operates

their food booth every day of

the World Chicken Festival on

Main Street. On Saturday,

September 25th during the

Chicken Festival, The Laurel

County Shrine club hosts a Car

Show and sells food at the

South Laurel High School.

Throughout the Year the Lau-

rel County Shrine Club sells

tickets on a Mini Kenworth

Semi-Truck that is given away

the last day of the Chicken

Festival. Again this year, we

have been lucky to get another

4 wheeler to sell tickets on for

another drawing. All year long

we sell plaques for $100.00

each with the money also going

to support the Shriners Hospi-

tal for Children. These

plaques are a very nice addi-

tion to any office, home or busi-

ness of any type to show on-

going support of the Hospital.

The Laurel County Shrine

Club has built a proud tradi-

tion of giving and supporting

the Shriners Children’s Hospi-

tal. We hope to be able to con-

tinue to give as much if not

more with each passing year.
