From the Directors’ Box

Good evening, and a warm wel-come to our visitors from Metro-politan Police FC. We extend

our hospitality to the officials, players, staff and supporters, hope you enjoyyour time with us, and have a safe jour-ney home afterwards.Tonight’s match is the 2nd in a doubleheader against the teams (as I writethese notes ahead of the Tauntongame) that are 1st & 2nd in the league,so it doesn’t get any easier tonight afterplaying Taunton on Saturday. This game was due to be played a fewweeks back, but despite our pitch beingone of the best around for still beingplayable in the wet, nothing could sur-vive the rain that arrived that day! Un-fortunately the Met Police team bus hadalready arrived when the game wascalled off which was far from ideal butsometimes can’t be avoided. They’vehad a great season to date includingreaching the first round of the FA Cupwhere they had a home tie againstleague opposition in Newport County.I mentioned in a recent programme thatWyatt Homes had been granted plan-ning permission for the housing schemeon the Cuthbury site in the run up toChristmas and so, as planned, repre-sentatives from the board of directorsmet with David Wyatt and his team toreview the progress and timings.

I’d love to say that work will start on theground immediately but it won’t comeas a surprise to learn that it will besome time yet before that happens. There is still a lot of planning and legalaspects (with the council rather than theclub) that need to be resolved first, butWyatt’s are working through this andhope to have more positive news laterin the year. In the meantime we areputting together a plan for some essen-tial works that need to be completedbefore the end of March as requiredunder the ground grading regulations …as we finalise our plans there’ll be morenews on this in a future programme. Finally, I’d just like to thank the Support-ers Club for their support. As you knowJack Lovell is out for the season with aknee injury and the Supporters Clubkindly agreed to cover the costs ofJack’s scan. They are working hard ontheir fund raising efforts and deserveour support, which includes an Italian /Pavarotti night on 23rd February. Tick-ets are selling well so don’t leave it toolate!

Enjoy tonight’s game.

From the Dugout

Hello everyone and welcome toour home league game v Met-ropolitan Police, I would like to

welcome the players, staff and support-ers of Met Police to Wimborne for thegame this evening. We welcome the Met Police here againafter they travelled down to us in De-cember, with the weather looking allgood until the heavens opened and thegame was cancelled just an hour beforekick off.Met Police are showing great form bothhome and away, and are sitting in agreat position in the league. We knowfull well that winning games, like we didin our play-off run last year, breeds con-fidence as individuals and as a team toget the momentum to play anywhereand believe you will get a result. We willhave to be at our very best tonight toget something from the game. Our game on Saturday against Tauntonin awful conditions showed that we canmix it with the best in this division. Ourapplication to the game and desire tocompete was tremendous. We thor-oughly deserved our point to keep thisgreat run of home form going.Billy Maybury returns this evening afterhis one game ban. Carl Pettifer is nowout for 3 to 4 weeks with a thumb injurywhich will be operated on this week,

Jack Lovell had a very successful oper-ation last Tuesday to his ACL. Earlyreports suggest he will be back nextJanuary, a long road ahead for Jack buthe will come back a stronger player.Scott Arnold will soon be starting hisrehab recovery with Ben, and PaddyHester now has a date in February forhis knee operation which will see himback for pre-season.The support this season has been in-credible. With over 400 for our last cou-ple of home games, we can boast to thefact that we have one of the betterhome attendances in this league.Thank you for all your support as wewill need it over the final weeks of theseason.I hope you all enjoy the game thisevening

Best wishes,

Matty

From the Dressing Room

Hi, and welcome to this evening’sgame against The MetropolitanPolice. I think this is the first time

we have played each other. The Blueswere moved across to the SouthernLeague in the FA’s restructuring at theend of last season so are playingagainst a number of different teams, asare we following our late promotion. The Blues are having a great season -having reached the First Round Properof the FA Cup, and are currently just 4points behind league leaders Tauntonwith 2 games in hand. From what I hearthey are a good footballing side and willprovide the boys with a different type ofchallenge to Saturday’s cracking gamein dreadful weather conditions.I can remember playing a game with asimilarly strong wind blowing down thepitch when Stuart Kearns was in goalfor us. He took a goal-kick at the hospi-tal end against the wind. It went uphigh, then got blown back straight athim and he had to tip his own kick overthe bar for a corner!Fortunately Gerard has a stronger kickon him and managed to get good dis-tance on his clearances against Taun-ton on Saturday.Although we’ve struggled at Taunton’sground in recent seasons, we’ve donewell against them here. Looking at theirteam, there wasn’t a weakness any-where. They’ve brought in some goodplayers and are clearly competitive atthis new level for them. I was surprisedthat their big centre-forward, MattWright, didn’t start, because he’s a realhandful who brings the runners intoplay.

Perhaps we could have fired in moreshots in the first half with the wind be-hind us as it’s really hard for keepersplaying against that. At the start of thesecond half they came at us and lookedto shoot from any distance. I thoughtthe boys defended well, and Jordanwas outstanding, probably his bestgame for us.We scored a great goal. Toby madespace for himself with his run off theball, and Burbs delivered it just whereToby wanted it. He still had plenty to doto score but nutmegged the keeper andput it in.Their goal came from a brilliant deliveryfrom the left which just needed a slighttouch to go in. Gerard made some in-credible saves, especially that amazingone near the end. Keith Emmersoncame forward and blasted one whichtook a deflection off MattyO. Gez wasalready diving but somehow got a footon it to deflect it up and over the bar. Ifyou haven’t seen it on the video, it’swell worth a look. The wind and rain made it horrible forthe players. However, the only one whoseemed to feel the cold was Toby. Idon’t think I’ve seen a grown man lookas cold as Toby on Saturday! That’s 9 league games undefeated hereat the Koolpak. You mayremember that I was stillplaying when the runstarted!Let’s encourage the boysto keep the run going to-night.

Wimborne Town 1 Taunton Town 1 - 26 Jan 2019 - Graham Dunn reportsBoth teams deserve plaudits for provid-ing the large crowd with a proper gameof British football in atrocious conditions.Toby Holmes gave Wimborne the leadon 72 minutes before Ollie Chamber-lain's glancing header restored parity. With the strong, gusting wind and driv-ing rain at their backs, Wimborne at-tacked the hospital end in the first half.On 5 minutes, from Gerard Benfield'sgoal-kick, Toby stood well behind thevisitors' back-line. The clever tacticworked as the wind-assisted kick flewthrough to him but he was unable to geta shot on target. On 12 minutes, Tobylinked with Luke Burbidge but his curlingeffort went just over the bar. However, it was Taunton who cameclosest two minutes later. From a free-kick wide on the left, Ed Palmer's head-er came back off Benfield's cross-bar.With the ball receiving plenty of air-time,the two defences restricted the free-scoring attacks to few chances. LukeHolmes had a shot easily saved byLloyd Irish in the 24th minute, andClarke's inviting cross found no taker. Atthe other end Andrew Neal's carefullyplaced shot was narrowly wide of the farpost on 31 minutes, and then, with 5minutes of the half remaining, he vol-leyed over from inside the goal areawhen the ball bounced up in front of himfollowing a corner. With the wind now at their backs, Taun-ton made their intentions obvious fromthe start of the second period as Em-merson's shot from distance whistledover Benfield's cross-bar. This was thefirst of their 19 goal attempts in the half.As attacks rained down on Benfield'sgoal, Neal's 25-yarder stung the bigkeeper's hands on 55 minutes, Pennymade a crucial sliding tackle, and Sam

Davidson broke up another attack be-fore majestically striding forward.Having survived Taunton's opening on-slaught, the home side gained in confi-dence, and, on 72 minutes, Wimbornegrabbed the lead. Luke Holmes, on theright, passed inside to Burbidge whoinstantly played a perfectly weighted ballbehind the Taunton back-line on the left. This was just what Toby was waiting for.He pushed the ball through the on-rush-ing Irish's legs and gleefully toe-pokedthe ball into the unguarded net. Most of the action was taking placearound Benfield's goal, and the almostinevitable equaliser came on 77 minuteswhen Chamberlain headed home Brett’sleft-wing cross. Benfield then made aterrific save with an outstretched leg,and an important catch under immensepressure from a corner before substituteWright's shot took a deflection andglanced off the outside of the post. Mat-ty Oldring and Benfield somehow keptout another Emmerson drive whichlooped up and flew inches over the bar.It was desperate rear-guard action bythe home defence, and after 4 minutesof additional time, referee Evans blewhis final whistle and the Magpies hadtheir hard-earned point.

On 6th July 1829, Sir Robert Peel formedthe Metropolitan Police, the first organ-ised Police Force in the world, with anoffice overlooking the Thames at White-hall known as Scotland Yard, a namethat has become famous throughout theworld, and also became synonymouswith the Metropolitan Police.

Ninety years later, in 1919, the Metropol-itan Police Football Club was formed, playing friendly matches until joining theSpartan League in 1928. Apart from thewar years (1939-45), the club remainedin that competition until 1960. During thattime the Blues were League Championseight times, runners-up once andLeague Cup winners once. In 1960 theBlues joined the Metropolitan League, winning the League Cup in 1969.

In 1971 the Blues were accepted into theSouthern League and played in DivisionSouth until 1977, under Team ManagerVic Rouse, the former Wales and CrystalPalace goalkeeper.

In 1977, the Blues moved to the IsthmianLeague, becoming one of the foundermembers of the restructured DivisionTwo. A successful first season (1977/78)resulted in the club finishing runners-upto Epsom & Ewell and being promoted toDivision One. In Season 1981/82 theclub finished 3rd in Division One, missingpromotion by just two points.

However, fortunes changed and in1984/5, as a result of finishing third fromthe bottom, the Blues were relegated toDivision Two (South). Ironically, in that1984/5 season the Blues enjoyed theirbest run in the F.A. Cup, reaching theFirst Round Proper. The home tie

against Dartford was subsequently fea-tured on the BBC's "Match of the Day"programme. Defeat against Dartford wasfollowed by a run of defeats in theleague, which saw the Blues drop intoone of the four relegation places intro-duced that season.

On returning to Division Two (South) theBlues finished 7th in both 1985/6 and1986/7. During 1987/88 the Blues ledthe Division Two (South) table in Januaryby seven points but they were over-hauled by Chalfont St Peter, who wontheir last two games of season and be-came champions by just one point. TheBlues were runners-up by virtue of aone-goal difference over Dorking. It wasa nail-biting finish to a season in whichthe Blues lost just two league matches, both away.

The next two seasons saw the club finishin mid-table in Division One but in 1990/1the club finished second from bottomand were relegated into the newlyformed Division Two of the restructuredDiadora (Isthmian) League. The club re-mained in Division Two for several years, always finishing in the top half but justoutside the promotion positions. In1993/4 the Blues again reached the FirstRound Proper of the F.A. Cup, losing 2:0to Crawley Town.

Season 1994/5 saw the club celebrate its75th Anniversary with a game againstthe Army and the opening of a newgrandstand at Imber Court. The Bluesfinished in 5th position in Division Twoand ended the season with a thrillingvictory in the Carlsberg Trophy, defeat-ing Collier Row in a penalty shoot-outfollowing a 1:1 draw after extra-time.

During the next few seasons the clubcontinued to finish in the top half of Divi-sion Two and in 1999/2000 reached the5th Round of the F.A. Vase (last 8),losing to the eventual winners DealTown.

In 2002/3 the Ryman League was re-structured and the Blues were placed inDivision One South. That season theclub finished second from bottom andfaced the prospect of relegation. By astroke of good fortune, only three teamswere relegated from Divisions One Northand South, therefore, we found our-selves in a relegation play-off againstWembley who finished second from bot-tom in Division One North. Fortunately,we won both legs of the play-off andretained our place in Division One South.Another poor season in 2003/4 saw usfinished just above the relegation placesin 20th position.

Following the F.A. restructuring of thenon-league pyramid, in 2004/5 we foundourselves in the Ryman League DivisionOne. In their first full season in charge, the new management team of Jim Coop-er, assisted by Gavin MacPherson andJohn Nicholson, had an immediate im-pact and we finished 5th in the DivisionOne, thus qualifying for the play-offs (in-troduced as part of the F.A. restructur-ing) where we played Bromley. Anevenly balanced encounter ended withthe scores 1:1 after extra time but we lost4:3 in the penalty shoot-out.

In 2005/6 we finished in 4th position inthe Ryman Division One but again fell atthe play-off semi-final stage, losing 1:0 toDover Athletic.Further F. A. restructuring resulted in aRyman League Division 1 North and

Division 1 South in 2006/7 and the clubfinished in sixth position in the Division 1South. With only one club promotedautomatically, the club narrowly missedout on a play-off place. However, theclub reached the final of the Surrey Sen-ior Cup for the first time since 1933 butwas beaten 4-1 after extra time by Toot-ing & Mitcham United, the score after 90minutes was 1-1.

In 2007/8 the Blues finished 4th in theRyman League Division 1 South but forthe third time in four years was beaten inthe play-off semi final, this time 2-0 byCray Wanderers.

In 2008/9 the club again finished in 4thposition in the Ryman Division OneSouth, thus qualifying for the play offs forthe 4th time in 5 seasons, winning thesemi final play off match 1:0 againstFleet Town, but losing 0:1 to Cray Wan-derers in the final.

In 2009/10 MPFC had a disappointingRyman Division 1 South league cam-paign. After a poor start the club wasnever in a position to mount a seriouschallenge for a play off position and fin-ished in 10th position. However, thisdisappointment was off-set by winningthe London Senior Cup for the first timein the club’s history, beating AFC Wim-bledon in an exciting final, 4:3 on penal-ties, after the match ended 4:4 after extratime.

The 2010/11 season proved to be themost exciting in the club’s history, culmi-nating in the club winning the RymanLeague Division 1 South Championshipby the narrow margin of one goal. Bog-nor Regis Town had a 2 point advantageduring the latter stages of the season

and that was the situation when the clubslined up for the final match. Bognor wereheld to an unexpected draw by ChathamTown and with the Met managing toscramble a 1:0 win against Merstham, itwas enough to win the title with a goaldifference of 61 against Bognor’s 60.

So, for the first time in the club’s historyit competed in the Ryman League Pre-mier Division during the 2011/12 Sea-son. The club got off to a flying start andat Christmas found themselves in 4thposition but unfortunately fell away in thesecond half of the season and finished in12th position.

The 2012/13 Season proved to be themost successful in the club’s history atthat stage, finishing in 6th position in theRyman League Premier Division, miss-ing out on a play-off place on goal differ-ence (9 goals). The club had a good runin the F.A. Cup, reaching the First RoundProper, eventually losing 2:1 to CrawleyTown from League One of the FootballLeague.

The 2013/14 Season was less success-ful in respect of the Ryman League Pre-mier Division in that we spent much ofthe season in mid-table, eventually fin-ishing in 17th position. Although wewere knocked out of the FA Cup and FATrophy at an early stage, we reached thefinal of the London Senior Cup and Sur-rey Senior Cup.

The 2014/15 Season ended with usreaching the Ryman League PremierDivision playoffs, albeit, via an unusuallyset of circumstances. We actually fin-ished in 6th position in the Premier Divi-sion but after a protracted series ofappeals, Enfield Town were deducted 3points and we ended up in 5th position.

Unfortunately, we lost the playoff semifinal 2:1 to Hendon. However, we en-joyed success in the Surrey Senior Cup,beating Merstham 2:0 in the final.

In 2015/16 we finished in 12th position. We had mixed fortunes in the cup com-petitions, falling at the first hurdle in theFA Cup after a reply with Sittingbourneand the first Round of the London Sen-ior Cup to London Bari on penalties. Wefaired marginally better by reaching the2nd round of the Ryman League Cupand the 3rd round of the Surrey SeniorCup before losing to Tooting & Mitchamand Molesey respectively. We had adecent run in the FA Trophy losingeventually in the 3rd Qualifying round toa good Wealdstone side after beatingAFC Hornchurch and Canvey Island inprevious rounds.

The 2016/17 season was one of mixedemotions and ups and downs. The FirstX1 struggled with form and consistencywhich resulted in a relegation battle thatwent to the last game of the season. The high point was reaching the final ofthe London Senior Cup with somememorable and exciting matches butunfortunately we lost in the final.

The 2017/18 season was again one ofmixed emotions with the First XI in thehunt for play off places for the majorityof the season before falling away andfinishing 10th. We reached the final ofthe Bostik League Cup where we lost5-3 to Billericay Town aet.

Due to FA restructuring we have beenmoved from the Bostik League to theSouthern League which has led to thedeparture of our long serving managerJim Cooper, a number of players andalso greatly increased travelling costs.

Met Police 5 Hartley Wintney 1 - 26 Jan - James McPherson’s N-LP Report

Max Blackmore scored twice as the MetPolice turned on the style in the secondhalf as they thrashed Hartley Wintney.Jack Mazzone, Oliver Robson and Rossmurdoch also scored in a game that theMet actually went behind in.A sloppy foul from Rhys King for Bluesgifted hartley a penalty that was calmlypushed out by Bertie Schotteri only tobe blasted home by Marley Ridge.Blues didn’t take long to grab the equal-iser after a corner from Oliver Knightwas turned in by the head of Mazzone. They took the lead early in the secondhalf when an Ollie Knight cross gaveBlackmore a glancing header that gavethe keeper no chance.

Blues grabbed a third minutes laterwhen the corner from Knight was pokedhome by Robinson. The Met looked in a very good positionafter claiming a fourth, after Mazzone’spass to Knight gave a low cross toBlackmore who planted the ball into theroof of the net.The Blues grabbed a fifth when KelvinKaranja put a powerful cross in only tobe controlled by Murdoch and placed inthe top corner.

Gavin Macpherson was simply aimingto keep Met Police in Step 3 this season- he certainly didn’t expect to be push-ing for the National League South!Macpherson - a club stalwart at ImberCourt from his playing days and 14years as assistant manager - was hand-ed the keys to the manager’s office inthe summer when long-serving bossJim Cooper stepped down.It came after they were switched fromthe Isthmian League to the new South-ern Premier League South division aspart of the FA’s restructuring. The majority of the squad departed andthe budget cut as their appeal of thedecision fell on deaf ears and theyfaced up to an increase in travelling. But a run to the FA Cup first round prop-er - where they played Newport County- has been backed up in the league withMacpherson leaning on many playerswho have graduated through the youthsystem. And their win at Frome on 19thmade it just one defeat in 13 games asthey leapt up to second in the table. Forboss Macpherson it’s all beyond anypre-season expectations.“I was asked by the local press: ‘Did Iimagine we’d be second?’ No - in fact Ididn’t imagine anything to be honest,”Macpherson told The NLP.“We set ourselves the standard of stay-ing up. It was obviously a summer of abit of upheaval with Jim going - whichwas unexpected - and being movedleagues. That happened in the space of

24 hours. Then we lost basically all theplayers. So some might view it that Ihad a hell of a job on my hands! But we had talent within, who hadn’tbeen part of the first team structure on aregular basis, I felt could form the nucle-us of the team. They were untried anduntested at Step 3, but I just felt if wesigned well around them we’d have achance of maintaining our Step 3 status.“Des (chairman Des Flanders) put somequite severe financial restraints on me -which is not a moan, it’s a hazard of thebusiness we’re in. Had I a bigger budg-et, would I have only been looking out-side? No, I’m pretty sure I would havestill been looking at those lads becausehaving known them for several yearscoming through the youth teams andthe U23s - we had a successful teamget through to the late stages of the FAYouth Cup a few years ago - I was defi-nitely going to explore whether theywere going to make up the nucleus ofthe side. I always felt they could and asit stands - we are in January - we’re do-ing very well.“I’m really enjoying that aspect,” he add-ed. “Some of the grounds I’ve played atand come across in my time. But you’regoing to new grounds, new types ofsupport, the journeys are different -much lengthier - but I’m enjoying theaspect of new teams, new managementteams. Having been 14 seasons asJim’s assistant, you get to know themanagers, the teams, certainly you getto know the grounds.”

Introducing the WTFC Development Team - Ben Atiako-HallWhat's your football playing history?I was at AFC Bournemouth Academysince the age of 8What position do you prefer to play in?I prefer to play out wide on the left (LW)so I can cut in and shoot but I am versa-tile across all attacking positions. What's the best game you've played in?Under 13’s at AFC Bournemouth, wewere on a tour in Belgium and wereplaying in a tournament against someEurope’s big clubs. We went 1–0 downto PSV in the quarter finals and I equal-ised late on with a good strike. Thegame went onto penalties where Iscored the winning penalty. It was sucha great feeling.Tell us about your best goalI have scored some memorable goals, some from the half way line in competi-tive matches. Wimborne Town FC Dev Squad wel-comed Christchurch Reserves to TheKoolpak Stadium just five days after thereverse fixture where Christchurch en-joyed a comfortable 3-0 win.

Again Christchurch fielded a good bal-ance of youth and experienced players, whilst WTFC brought Rhys Owen intothe starting line-up and gave a start togoalkeeper Eddie Phillips, his first fullgame since breaking his collarbone backin September.

It was Christchurch who started verybrightly and within two minutes Phillipswas forced into a smart low save. WithChristchurch still enjoying the early ex-changes, Ollie Osborne made an impor-tant block from a fierce shot. The visitorskept pressing and in the 17th minute, EdPhillips produced a diving one handedsave from a low curving shot whichseemed destined for the far bottom cor-ner.

WTFC then started to get a foothold inthe game and following a flowing cross-field move that stretched the opponentsdefence, Rhys Owen’s shot just wentover the bar. WTFC went close again toscoring on 25 minutes, good work byHarry Wright in midfield, who fed AidanShepherd but his goal-bound shot wasdeflected wide for a corner. Christchurchdefended the corner well.

Again the action switched to the otherend, with Christchurch going close witha direct ball through the WTFC centredefence, but the lobbed shot went wide. There was still time for another WTFCattack when Aidan Shepherd showed

good feet and strength to lose his markerand was bearing down towards theChristchurch area, but then was crudelytackled by a recovering defender, butnothing came of the resulting free-kick.Somehow this pulsating first half endedgoal-less 0-0 Half Time.

The second half commenced at thesame high tempo but Christchurch finallyopened the scoring when Phillips couldonly parry a cross shot and it was EdgarZanin, the Christchurch striker, who re-acted quickly and smashed in the looseball in the 51st minute. 0-1

WTFC made an attacking change whenDan Hunt was brought on, and he wasquickly causing the Christchurch defend-ers numerous problems.

WTFC continued to press high and near-ly equalised after a wonderful passingmove started by Cam Smith, into the feetof Adam Holmes who found Aidan Shep-herd but his shot was deflected widefollowing a last-ditch tackle.

Isaac Storey and Ben Atiako-Hall werebought on and each made a good differ-ence, but it was Dan Hunt whose quickclever feet drew a rash tackle from aChristchurch player and the referee hadno hesitation and pointed to the spot.Aidan Shepherd smashed in the penalty.1-1

It only took Christchurch four minutes tore-gain the lead, when a diagonal cross-field pass found space behind the WTFCfull-back and their Number 9, controlledthe ball, turned and rifled the ball high inthe WTFC net from a tight angle 1-2.

Last May, at The NLP’s annual Nationalawards, one of the gongs I was mostlooking forward to handing out was forour Step 3 Manager of the Year award. As always, it was hotly contested in aseason when so many gaffers haddone such sterling work, but the manwho received the award was Hereford’sPeter Beadle after he had guided theBulls to promotion from arguably themost competitive division in the Non-League pyramid. For proof of that, just take a look at thetop five in the Southern Premier lastterm: second-placed Kings Lynnclocked up a remarkable 100 pointswith Slough (99), Kettering (97) andWeymouth (97) hot on their tail. Here-ford won the league with a staggering113 points. The reason for my excitement was be-cause I had never met Beadle before, and was intrigued by this somewhatimposing man who had just won histhird promotion with the club after tak-ing over in the summer of 2015 as thenewly-formed Hereford started lifeagain in the mud bath of the MidlandLeague.I asked Beadle about his hopes andambitions for this season’s assault onthe National North. Could he master-mind a fourth promotion on the spin, orhad the time come for their club to con-solidate their position in order to growstronger for the coming years. He wasadamant consolidation was the wayforward.

Sadly, that doesn’t appear to be howthe Hereford board saw things, and justeight games into this campaign, the leg-endary boss was unceremoniouslysacked. Results - three wins, three de-feats and two draws - were deemed notgood enough and so it was time for achange if the club was to recover andclimb the league ladder.Sadly, no recovery has been forthcom-ing and Hereford are now well and trulyin a relegation dogfight despite Satur-day’s 3-2 win at Blyth.I don’t know why clubs do it. Seriously, did Hereford think they could swingopen the doors of the National NorthSaloon and start picking their rivals offwith ease? Did they seriously thinkthere was a man better placed thanBeadle to do the job? Call it arroganceor boardroom mismanagement, eitherway, sacking Beadle is one of the worstdecisions we’ve witnessed all season.Around about the same time as Bea-dle’s departure, Jay Saunders, a manwho had brought a similar level of suc-cess to Maidstone United, was alsoshown the door. Look what has hap-pened since and look where they arenow!23rd of 24 in the National League - EdClubs need to be realistic about theirambitions, and too many are trying torun before they can even walk. Beadleand Saunders are both still out of work. One can only wonder where their re-spective clubs would be now had thosefateful decisions not been made fourmonths ago.

Clubs must be more realistic - Alex Narey - Non-League Paper 27 Jan

The Met Police football club is based inEast Molesey, Surrey. Originally madeup of players from the Metropolitan Po-lice Service, the rule requiring playersto be employees of the service was re-moved when a previous Commissionerrefused to sanction time off for playing. However, the club is still part-funded bya police staff lotteryThe Metropolitan Police Service, is re-sponsible for law enforcement in Great-er London, excluding the "square mile"of the City of London, which is the re-sponsibility of the City of London Police. As of September 2017, the Met had40,874 full-time personnel. This includ-ed 30,871 police officers, 8,005 policestaff, 1,384 police community supportofficers and 614 designated officers. This number excludes the 2,470 specialconstables who work voluntarily part-time. This makes the Metropolitan Po-lice, in terms of officer numbers, thelargest by a significant margin in the UK

A TV camera crew from Brazil poppedinto NLP offices last week. They were keen to see look at a differ-ent side of English football, they wantedto know why we enjoy covering theNon-League game so much, whatmakes it different to the higher echelonsand just how do we get the paper outfor a Sunday morning.Of course, Brazilian football has manyof its roots in English football and thebond for many fans has even led to pil-grimages to this country. Corinthian-Casuals are seen as the forefathers byfans of Corinthians in Sao Paulo andthe Bostik Premier club will often havevisitors turn up out of the blue to see theground and see if they can purchase ascarf in their famous colours. It’s easy to forget what a source of in-trigue the English football system is.Unrivalled anywhere in the world, thePyramid is the cornerstone of this coun-try’s game. The opportunity – albeit with a fairamount of cash – to go from bottom totop. Or vice versa.Yes, there are lots of intricacies andthere are often frustrations at all levels –particularly with the slow drip of moneythat comes down from the top – but weshould be very proud of what we have.Non-League football allows you to getcloser to the game. The chance to min-gle with the players after, feel like yourpresence at the ground really mattersand the pennies you spend vital forkeeping your club going. It’s to be partof something. From a journalist's point of view thereare so many wonderful stories to telleach season that the only problem is

managing to fit them all in. Covering thewhole country is a challenge but one weall relish. And it all feels much more intimate. I’vecovered games at big grounds and it’sfantastic. You might get a hot meal be-forehand, the WIFI works great, thepress rooms are warm. But I enjoyed covering an FA Vasesemi-final while sat in a disused openair dug-out, umbrella perched to keepmy laptop dry and the chance for aWroxham player to make sure we allknew he meant to score the free-kickthat looked more like a cross andbounced a couple of times before end-ing up in the corner!Looking through the attendances eachweek serves only as a reminder at howpassionate football fans in this countryare for ‘their club’.Stockport County had 4,644 at their winover York City - in the sixth tier. Nearly3,5000 saw Bath City v Torquay in theNational League South. On the same day, there were more than2,000 to see a top of the table clash be-tween South Shields and Farsley Celticin the seventh tier! It’s remarkable when you think about itin real terms. Brazilians love their foot-ball and are just as passionate as weare. We’re looking forward to seeinghow the documentary comes out.As to how we get the paper in shopsevery Sunday morning – that’s a toughquestion to answer. But somehow, thanks to all the dedicated reportersand photographers across the country,we always do.

Steve Farrell - Owner & Brewer Eight Arch Brewing CoWe have started to sponsor the club thisseason as we are big football fans atEight Arch, so we thought it would be agood idea to give the players an incen-tive (not that they need one!) to scoremore goals. We decided to offer them acase of our cans (24 cans) for everygoal they scored at home during De-cember, luckily we didn't offer it for awaygames after the Poole game! We arevery keen on supporting local in every-thing we do and there isn't a better com-bination than football and beer is there? My son, George, is becoming more andmore interested in football especiallyover the last 12 months and we havebeen coming to more and more Wim-borne games this season and for him to
