FROM THE DIRECTORS’ BOX

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to our visitors Taunton Town.

We extend our hospitality to the officials, players and supporters. We hope you enjoy your time with us and have a save journey home.

We have not had the start of the season that we would have liked but it’s going to take a few games for all the new players to gel together. There are promising signs with every game played.

Today we host Taunton Town. Last season when we played them here at the Cuthbury we drew 1-1 and hopefully we can do better today and get three pointsWe have a busy bank holiday weekend as we are away to Poole Town on Monday.

The building is due to start at the new ground this week with the proposed move

to be completed ready for next season. We have made a few alterations to the clubhouse and other facilities and new drawings are being drawn up. When we have them we will put them up in the clubhouse for all to see. I have spoken to the builders and they have given permission for two representatives of the club to take photos of the progress by appointment so we will have a record of the build as it progresses.

Enjoy the game today

FROM THE DUG OUT

Hello everyone and welcome to our home league game v Taunton, I would like to welcome the players, staff and supporters of Taunton to

Wimborne for the game this afternoon.

Our last home game v Hartley Wintney saw us play in awful conditions and this certainly effected the game, both teams at the end were happy with the point. Our trip to Blackfield and Langley was disappointing, going down to 10 men with Connor being sent off , this was frustrating as I felt we were starting to control the game and seemed in no danger off conceding and losing the game. Last Saturday we travelled to Hendon and this was a game of two halves, Hendon dominated the first and only good defending kept us in the game at 1-0 down going into half time, second half we really grew into the game and got a deserved equaliser through Kieran to gain another valuable point. Over the first 3 games we have had to nurture Joey with his calf and ankle, he has been outstanding since joining us, also Josh Buck with a slight Hamstring injury. We are pleased to get Curtis back in the squad and have Davo returning after suspension.

Todays game v Taunton is a big game for us, Rob and his staff have done a tremendous job since taking over and I am sure they will want to continue improving and look for promotion this season, for us we need to keep our good home form and pick up valuable points in these early games off the season, our start last season saw us only gain 4 points from 8 games and put us under real pressure so we know that with 2 draws and a loss so far we need to get points in the bag quickly, with a quick turn around we go to Poole Town Monday for another tough game. It is a great league to be part off and the players must relish these great fixtures.

Scott Arnold is now on the road to recovery, he is working hard on strengthening and

starting to run, Paddy Hester is getting closer each week and Laurence is pleased with the progress they are making.

Congratulations to our current players out on loan this season, Kyle Graham at Christchurch who has scored a few goals already, Aiden Shepherd at Shaftesbury got his first goal last weekend, Will Prior at Bashley scored 2 in the week, Josh Hall at Verwood is performing well, Lewis Gunstone-Grey is performing well in goal with Christchurch, we are waiting on Robbie Bradley starting his loan at Totton after a back injury, all these young lads are playing regular football and performing well which can only benefit us in the future.

I hope you all enjoy the game this afternoon

Best Wishes

FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Hello and welcome to the J&b Stadium for today’s game against Taunton, I would like to wish all their players, staff and

fans a enjoyable time with us today.

Since my last notes we have had three tough games to go through, first was our home game to Hartley Wintney which was affected by the strong winds throughout, with both teams having a few chances, Luke Holmes with our best, with an overhead kick which the keeper did well to save, in the end a point on the day with the poor conditions was probably a fair result.

We then when to newly promoted Blackfield and Langley on the Tuesday evening, their pitch is nice and big and gave us allot of space to move the ball, we played some good attacking football and should have had a penalty for a foul on Tony, the ref saw it differently and booked Tony for diving. Early in the second half after being in control for most of the game Conor unluckily got sent of for a second yellow, after this Blackfield grew into the game but we defended brilliantly and it took a fantastic strike from 20/25 yards into the top corner for Blackfield & Langley to win the game late on. Sometimes you have to hold your hands up if a bit of brilliance like that wins a game.

We then went to Hendon on Saturday, the old saying it’s a game of two halves

really took its meaning, we were not up to speed in the first half and we’re lucky it was only 1-0 at half time, second half we were right at it, Kieron got his first goal from the penalty spot then Tony, Luke Holmes, Burbs and myself all had decent chances to score, both teams could have won the game but in the end a draw was probably a fair result.

Today we face a tough test against a very good Taunton side who we have played some great games both game and away in the last 3 years. Their first 2 results were a little bit of a shock but they got their first win against a strong Chesham side at the weekend so we know it’s going to be hard today, Conor is suspended so it will give someone else a chance in his position, but whoever comes in will be ready for the battle

I hope you enjoy today’s game and hopefully we can get our first win of the season and continue our good home form from last season

Hope you enjoy the game this afternoon

Best wishes

A BRIEF HISTORY OF TAUNTON TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB

The present Taunton Town Football Club was formed in December 1947 by a few local businessmen and played their first friendly fixture during Easter 1948. They then played on a number of grounds such as Mountfields, French Weir, Victoria Park, Huish Old Boys and finished up at Denman’s Park, Haines Hill.

Having joined and played in the Somerset Senior League, 1953 became a notable year. The club gained admission into the Western League and moved into Wordsworth Drive, their present home, on a lease agreement with the Taunton Borough Council.

The club struggled financially and depended heavily on a very active Supporters Club during the late 50s and early 60s. 1968/69 saw an upsurge in the club’s fortunes with manager Doug Hillard securing the Western League championship for the first time.

During the middle 1970s Ron Gingell became manager and the club were runners up for four consecutive seasons. The 70s was also highlighted by the club purchasing the ground from Taunton Borough Council and the installation of floodlights. During 1977 the club gained election to the Southern League Division One (South) and two years later the reorganisation of the leagues caused by the establishing of the Alliance Premier League saw Taunton Town transfer to

the Midland Division to take advantage of the M5 motorway.

The club became a limited company in 1981. The new board soon decided that Southern League football was too expensive and the club reverted to the Western League in 1983. Seven years later the championship pennant returned to Wordsworth Drive under the management of Keith Bowker.

In 1994 the team then managed by Terry Rowles battled through to the F A Vase final at Wembley Stadium but Diss Town won the trophy in extra time.

Russell Musker was appointed manager in November 1994 and another championship followed in 1996. After two seasons as runners up three consecutive titles followed together with the club’s first ever Cup success – a 2 – 1 victory over Berkhamsted Town in the F A Carlsberg Vase final at Aston Villa’s newly modernised Villa Park stadium. This ended a sequence of 18 defeats in cup finals since the 1950s. Another Cup victory was achieved in 2003, lifting the Somerset Premier Cup for the first time with a 2-1 win over Yeovil Town in a final played at Clevedon Town’s Hand Stadium.

Peter Beadle took over as Manager in 2005 amid great optimism but left after only 14 games to join Newport County and former Hallen manager Gary Domone stepped into the hot seat – after a disappointing start results began

TAUNTON FC - HISTORYANDREW NEAL: STRIKER‘Rocky’ signed for Taunton in the summer of 2018 after leaving Truro City where he had spent the last two seasons. Previously played for Ivybridge Town and Plymouth Parkway before having a brief spell at Tiverton Town. Went on to join Bodmin Town where he netted 60 goals in 44 appearances. Top scorer for Truro in his first season and has made an immediate impact at the Viridor Stadium, scoring nine goals from six pre-season games. Rocky won a number of awards last season including Players’ Player and Supporters’ Player of the Season.

JOSH GRANT: STRIKERJosh is a summer acquisition from Tavistock where he scored 32 goals last season. A former Plymouth Argyle apprentice.

to improve and the club won its second Somerset Premier Cup by beating a strong Mangotsfield United side at Weston super Mare. Domone resigned as Manager in December 2007 and was replaced by Ian Jones, who himself resigned in April 2009.

Former player Paul West, who lifted the F A Vase in 2001, took over and rebuilt the team with a local emphasis. West left the club in May 2012 and was replaced by Leigh Robinson. In the previous season the club finished with a run of nine consecutive victories culminating with the club’s third Somerset Premier Cup triumph, beating Frome Town 1-0 in the final played at Paulton Rovers FC. This was especially notable as no goals were conceded in five games. The club also won the Southern League Groundsman of the Year award in 2013-2014, a remarkable achievement considering the floods which affected the area causing the ground to be under water for much of January and February.

In July 2010 Tom Harris stepped down as Chairman after 29 years and was replaced by Kevin Sturmey who also took on the roles of Chief Executive and Head Groundsman. Since then the club have made major improvements on and off the pitch, continuing to maintain the ambitions to play at a higher level.

Off the field the club suffered a major blow in July 2011 when the clubhouse was badly damaged by a fire which was caused by an electrical fault – what remained of the clubhouse was extensively smoke damaged and the whole building had to be demolished. A mobile bar was brought in on matchdays

but the following year a modular building was opened despite the original builder going into administration.

2014-2015 was one of the most successful seasons in recent history with fourth place in the League, and the retention of the Somerset Premier Cup, beating Yeovil Town in the final. We also retained the Southern League Groundsman of the Year award and were in face voted the second best club at Step 3 & 4. Our programme also won a prestigious award being voted the best in the Southern League and 18th nationally.

The club reached the play offs for three seasons in a row but finally last season it all clicked and the West Division title was clinched by a massive 19 points with only one League defeat all season.

Manager Leigh Robinson and his assistant Michael Meaker left in September but the club maintained its successful run under head of football Rob Dray, assisted by coach Matt Villis. The club finished runners up in the Southern League Premier Division South, but lost out to Poole Town in the end of season play offs as well as reaching the Fourth qualifying Round of the FA Cup before losing 1-0 to Billericay Town in a replay.

The club has added some more quality players and are hopeful of more success this season.

RECENT MATCH REPORTS RECENT MATCH REPORTSSaturday 17th August 2019Hendon 1 Wimborne Town 1Southern League Premier Division SouthAtt: 189

In a game of two halves, Wimborne came from behind to bag their first goal and away point of the new season courtesy of a Kieran Roberts penalty in

a dominant second-half display.

Manager Holmes started with the same XI for the third game running, but an inspired double substitution on 55 minutes changed the game.

However, it was Hendon who dominated the first period, playing fluent, fast-paced football on their own artificial surface. And they started like the proverbial express train: a weak clearance by goalkeeper Cameron Plain ended with him catching a header; then the young stopper threw himself to his right to make a super save at the foot of his post from Ryan Hope’s drive; before Connor Calcutt’s header was cleared off the line. All this in the first three minutes.

With the wind behind them, the Greens’ attacks continued to rain down on Plain’s goal. A header bounced off the top of his crossbar on 8 minutes; a 20-yard free-kick was blocked by the defensive wall on 18 minutes, and the follow-up was diverted for a corner; Sam Corcoran shot wide after a swift attack down the right two minutes later; and a surging run through the middle saw another Greens’ shot flash past Plain’s post.

With the Magpies’ mid-field over-run, Wimborne rarely had control of the ball, and the back-line was under constant attack. With Joe Byrne and Sam Poole marshalling the defence, the visitors resisted all the home side could throw at them until the 32nd minute. A free-kick was half-cleared, and when a follow-up low cross from the right came into the area, Matty Harriott scrambled the ball into the net from 2 yards - it was a disappointing goal to concede.

With Hendon knocking the ball around at will, there was a danger that the floodgates would open, but the visiting defence dug deep - Byrne making an excellent tackle on the left and then wide on the right, and Poole rarely missing a header in the centre. The Magpies did have two shots in the first period, both by Roberts, but neither troubled the tall Chris Grace in the home goal.

Hendon’s thirteen goal attempts to Wimborne’s two encapsulated the story of the first half.

During the interval, the words of “Things can only get better” kept running through your reporter’s head - and in that second period they certainly did!

On 48 minutes good build-up play between Lukes Burbidge and Holmes, and Roberts saw Tony Lee fire over when well-placed. Four minutes later a quick break saw Lee and Roberts threaten the home goal. With Connor Doe and Franklyn Clarke getting more support

in mid-field, it was a promising start to the half for the visitors, and things were, indeed, about to get better! Manager Holmes introduced Stefan Penny and James Stokoe on 55 minutes, and the impact was almost immediate.

Clarke found Stokoe who played Holmes through on 58 minutes; three minutes later Plain’s clearance was controlled by Stokoe who again sent Holmes through; Roberts had a shot which went wide; and Poole’s header from a corner was caught by Grace.

With Stokoe rolling his defenders and rolling back the years, and Penny surging down the right, Wimborne took control of the game. Hendon had let leads slip in their first two league games, and their foul count started to mount as they anxiously tried to stop it happening again.

The deserved equaliser came at the mid-point of the half. Following Josh Buck’s inswinging corner from the right, a low cross resulted in a melee and a shot which hit a falling defender’s hand. A penalty looked the right decision, but a yellow card seemed harsh. Roberts confidently fired home.

Sensing a second, Wimborne kept pressing. A counter-attack on 69 minutes involving Stokoe, Holmes and Burbidge saw the latter’s rasping shot fly inches wide; Billy Maybury’s 20-yard free-kick was blocked; Clarke forced Grace into a low save after good work by Holmes;

Stokoe fired over after Holme’s effort was blocked; and Stokoe drew a good save from Grace on 83 minutes after a pass from Roberts.

Hendon did have chances in the last five minutes: Callcutt shot over from a knock-down; Plain made an excellent tip-over on 87 minutes; and Corcoran flashed a shot wide in time added-on.

As we saw last season, points are hard to come by on the road. This was a good one, and that second-half performance will put the boys in good heart for the next two tough games - Taunton at home on Saturday, and Poole away on Bank Holiday Monday.

Taunton is a large town in Somerset, England. The town’s population in 2011 was 69,570. Taunton has over 1,000 years of religious and military history, including a 10th century monastery and Taunton Castle, which has origins in the Anglo Saxon period and was later the site of a priory.

Taunton is the site of Musgrove Park Hospital and Somerset County Cricket Ground and is home to 40 Commando, Royal Marines.

The town name derives from “Town on the River Tone”– or Tone Town--------------------------------------------------------- I like the scenery around river valleys. Some are absolutely gorges.--------------------------------------------------------- Police in Egypt chased a criminal into a river. He said he was innocent. He was in denial.--------------------------------------------------------- Three blondes are lost in the desert. They come across a river that they have to get over, but it’s swarming with crocodiles.

Luckily, a genie just happened to pass by on his flying carpet. He said: “Ah, you are lucky! As I have found you here, I will grant each of you one wish.”

The first blonde wished she was an excellent swimmer. And with a snap of the genie’s fingers, her physique changed. She ran off and tried to cross the river, but the crocodiles ate her quickly.

The second blonde had to rethink, and decided to ask for a rowing boat, as swimming proved to be no option.Without hesitation a rowing boat appeared before their eyes. She got in, and rowed across. But when she was barely halfway across, the crocodiles broke enough of her boat to let it sink, and she too was eaten.

The third blonde had to think really hard and couldnt think of anything except to say “You know, I always wanted to try a different hair colour.” and as soon as she was finished talking, her hair colour changed to brown.

“OH!” she then said “Look over there - a bridge.”--------------------------------------------------------- A priest had walked for miles and came upon a river. The water was nice and cool, so he began to splash water on his face to cool down from the many hours of walking. The man looked up just as a monster Grizzly Bear was charging at him full speed roaring like a freight train. Then about 20 yards out the man dropped to his knees and began to pray, Dear Lord let this bear become a Christian!! At that moment the Grizzly Bear stopped dead in his tracks, stood straight up on his hind legs, raised his paws to the heavens, and said Dear Lord thank you for this food I’m about to eat.--------------------------------------------------------- What is the English version of a hat-trick in cricket? 3 runs in 3 balls

Today we recall an opening day loss at Downton 22 years ago and a win over Alton Town in the first game of the 2002/03 season.

Déjà vu as Magpies fall to Robins

Downton 2 Wimborne Town 1 Wessex League 16th Aug 1997

The Magpies came away from Downton with no points in the opening game for the second year in a row, but manager Alex Pike was looking on the bright side. “We lost 2-0 last season so this is an improvement. And we still managed to finish runners-up in the league.” Carlo Downie gave the home side an interval lead and just one minute after Darren Reeks’ penalty on 55 minutes, Chris Collinge’s header won it for Downton.Wimborne had strengthened their side for the new season with the return of the great Mark Turner from Thatcham plus Martin Clark and Matty White from Poppies. Out had gone Andy Taplin and Gary Manson to Sturminster Marshall and Pete Howard to Hamworthy Engineering.

Elsewhere that opening day, AFC Lymington’s record run of 43 league games without defeat came to an end at the hands of AFC Totton for whom Martin Spiers scored twice in a 2-1 victory at Testwood. And goals from Paul Cuglietta, Bruce Jones and Stuart Heath gave Poppies a 3-2 win at home against B.A.T. In the Southern League, Bashley’s new boss Jimmy Case saw his side crush Cinderford Town 6-1. Paul Sales scored

four for Bash with Gareth Barnes and James Taylor also netting. Stewart Kearn and Marcus Oldbury were among the Bashley starting line-up.

The Wimborne Town team that lost to Downton was: Leonard, Michael White, Foot, Henshaw (Weller 75), Turner, Bridle, Phillips, Reeks, Robbins, Matt White (Clark 70), Sturgess. Sub: Haigh

Six bookings worries Arnie

Wimborne Town 2 Alton Town 0 Wessex League 17th Aug 2002

New Magpies boss Paul Arnold was pleased with the three points but upset by the referee. Wimborne had six players booked in a game which Arnie said “didn’t contain a bad tackle”. Two of the bookings were for dissent but the other four, including Paul Honeybun and Scott Cannie in the first ten minutes, followed what Arnie saw as just strong challenges. But Alton were no match for Wimborne who were two up at the break before easing off in the second period. Aaron Turner headed Magpies ahead from a Scott Cannie cross on 20 minutes and 10 minutes later Stuart Cannie made it 2-0 when he headed home a Paul Roast cross.

Wimborne Town: Kearn, Scott Cannie, Percival, Roast, Powell, Barham, Sturgess, Dipper (Paul Manning 65), Honeybun (Plank 85), Stuart Cannie (Elmes 75), Turner.

Which was your best game for Wimborne?I’d have to say the Dorset Senior Cup Final in 2018 against Shaftesbury. It was a rather tight game to start with, and then to come away 7-0 winners and share the moment with the fans to cap off a great season for the club with getting in the play-offs and winning the Cup, was a great feeling. Also, on a personal level, to score a hat-trick in a cup final is something I will always remember.

Which were your best goals for the Club – top 3?The “Panelka” penalty against Hereford away. I had said to my friend a few days before about doing it as a joke, and then said to everyone on the coach about it. Knowing it would be the biggest crowd I’d ever played in front of, I didn’t know we would get a penalty in the game, let alone in the last 5 minutes. After having the confidence from scoring in the first half, and talking about it so much, I thought I had to go for it. If it didn’t go in I wouldn’t have known what to say or do. But fortunately it did, and it will have to go down as my best goal.

Second would be the goal at home to North Leigh where I picked up the ball on the edge of our box and ran the length of the pitch past 2 or 3 players and scored with the outside of my right foot.Third, I’d say every goal against Poole. If I had to pick one it would be in my first season to win 4-3 in extra time. But all felt equally good.

Best moment at Wimborne?I couldn’t pick just one. Each and every season has been equally if not better than the last as we achieved a record finish in each. In the first we finished 11th, which was the highest the club had finished in its history. In the second we finished 3rd, got into the play-off final, winning the Dorset Cup, and going up by default by one goal, in which I think one of my 62 goals that season helped. Then our first season in the Southern Prem – firstly surviving when everyone thought we wouldn’t, and personally scoring 30

goals.

It has all been a joy coming from where I have in the game, and achieving great things for a fantastic local club.

What will you miss the most?It will be the group of players and management team. When you see the same people three times a week for three years, they become so much more than just team-mates or someone you work with, they become your closest friends. You learn so much about each other, what makes certain people laugh, how they react in different situations, and you become so close, especially achieving what we have. The morale of the group has been so special and a pleasure to be part of.

On the management side of things Matty, Danny and Shane have been unbelievable to play under, a shoulder to cry on, a father-figure for

“Farewell Interview” – Toby Holmes

THE BIG INTERVIEWadvice on stuff inside and out of football, a laugh when they have wanted, and serious when they have needed to be.

And lastly Macey, Jeff, and John the phys (even though he could do with smiling more). They have kept the camp happy and smiley, and they deserve a special mention for giving up all their time and effort for nothing other than their love for the club. They are the nicest people I’ve met playing football.

What will you miss the least?Without a doubt Luke Holmes’ music.

Who was the hardest to play against in training?Because a lot of the training is small-sided games, it’s got to be the two Lukes – Burbs and Holmesy. Who could quire easily dribble past everyone, sometimes twice, and you stood there scratching your head wondering how they did it.

Positionally up against defenders, I’d say Davo and Arn. Both read the game so well. I never got past them very much unless the pitch was long and I could use my lanky legs, even then they’d sometimes still get me.

Who was the most talented?Another very tough question. I couldn’t pick just one so my top five, in no particular order, are Gerard, Davo, Paddy, Holmesy and Burbs. Obviously Paddy has had a bad injury which was gutting for him and the team, but when he plays he’s class.

Davo for a young defender has a lot talent, even though he can lose his head, and go on 40 yard runs which I love. It shows he could easily progress onto bigger and better things.

Gerard is a top, top keeper. His distribution and the saves he makes show he’s got so much talent, and is the best keeper I’ve played with.Burbs is on another level. His famous chop will go down in folklore. His vision, timing and range of passing to get all my assists is scary. I’m not sure if I’ll again play with someone who could find me in the dark like he could.

With his dribbling and low centre of gravity, Holmesy reminds me of a non-league Messi. Just the way he wiggles and glides past three or four players shows he’s got a lot of talent. He just needs that final third fine-tuning, but what a player!

I could go on about everyone and what great attributes they have, but I don’t think there’s enough room in the programme.

Is there anything you’d like to say to the supporters?Reading through this, and reading it back to myself, you must be asking why on earth I’m leaving. It’s a question I asked myself plenty of times while making the decision during the off-season. The simple answer is, coming from the Dorset Premier League three years ago and achieving what I have over the past three seasons, why stop now? I want to try and go as high as I can with this, and need to put myself in the best position to do that. If I was a little younger I wouldn’t have left, but I need to go now to see if I can do it at the top of this league. It might be the wrong choice, but you never know unless you make it.

I’d have liked to have stepped up again, but that option didn’t come during the time I was making up my mind. You may think it’s a sideways move, but challenging at the top is where I need to be, and I personally think that Wimborne is a couple of years away from that, and, as I said before, time isn’t on my side.

The club is in great hands with Matty and Graham, and I’m sure will have another good year. Everyone at the club, especially the fans, are what will make it succeed, and I hope you carry on cheering for the Magpies.

Thank you for all the great memories. If things don’t work out, I’d love to come back.I wish you all the best.
