It’s hard to believe that Christmas and a new competition year are right around the corner. How time flies when we’re riding or playing with our horses!

The new year will bring a new initiative from the Jumping Committee which directly impacts the safety of our competitors. The phase-in of our new jump cup specifications will ensure that competitions are offering the highest standards of safety for our riders and horses. Please read the article in this issue of The Warm-Up Ring to familiarize yourself with these new requirements. In the year 2021, the phase-in will be complete, and Equestrian Canada-sanctioned shows from Bronze through Platinum levels will be compliant.

Recognizing that these new requirements could put significant financial pressure on the shows, particularly the smaller ones, the Jumping Committee has put together a financial aid package to assist these shows. We have earmarked $100,000 to assist competition organizers in purchasing FEI-approved breakaway cups and track systems for their competition and warm-up rings. All that is needed to apply for reimbursement is a copy of the paid invoice showing purchase of approved equipment submitted to [email protected] by October 1, 2020.

Wishing you, your family, and your equine partners the merriest of holiday seasons and a safe, successful new year.

GREENOUGH, MCLELLAN, AND 2008 OLYMPIC SILVER MEDAL

TEAM INDUCTED INTO JUMP CANADA HALL OF FAME

The Jump Canada Hall of Fame welcomed three new inductees during its 12th annual Induction Ceremony and Gala, presented by BMO Financial Group, on Sunday, November 3, 2019, at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex in Toronto, ON.

A sold-out crowd celebrated Greg Greenough’s induction into the category of Builder – Individual; Wayne McLellan as Rider; and the 2008 Olympic silver medal team of Mac Cone, Jill Henselwood, Eric Lamaze, and Ian Millar in the Team category. Held as part of a black-tie gala and dinner, the Hall of Fame paid tribute to these three extraordinary and deserving inductees. Tribute videos and heartfelt speeches highlighted the accomplishments and incredible contributions that all three inductees have made to Canadian hunter/jumper sport.

Past president of the Canadian Equestrian Federation and former Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) committee member, Greenough was celebrated for his esteemed leadership and unwavering support of sport. Renowned as a competitor, trainer, and coach, McLellan was inducted for his remarkable and unparalleled career in the Canadian hunter industry. The Canadian Show Jumping Team comprised of Cone and Ole, Henselwood and Special Ed, Lamaze and Hickstead, and Millar and In Style fought against all odds to deliver a team silver medal for Canada at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

“The Hall of Fame Gala provides a unique opportunity to celebrate the legends of our sport in front of their peers,” said Mark Samuel, Chairman of the Jump Canada Hall of Fame. “The sense of community was incredible, and everyone went home inspired and feeling connected. It is an honour for my committee and myself to pay tribute to our industry’s amazing champions and legacy.”

The Jump Canada Hall of Fame was created in 2006 to recognize outstanding contributions to Canadian hunter/jumper sport. Including the 2019 induction class, a total of 60 champions have been welcomed into the Hall of Fame to date, including 21 horses and ponies, 31 humans, six organizations, and six teams.

The Jump Canada Hall of Fame committee is comprised of Mark Samuel (Chairman), Jennifer Anstey, Evie Frisque, Muffie Guthrie, Karen Hendry-Oullette (ex-officio), Bobbie Reber, Phil Rozon, Jennifer Ward, and Nancy Wetmore.

AWARDS PRESENTATIONS FOR OFFICIAL, OWNER, SPONSOR AND VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

As is tradition, the annual Jump Canada awards were presented during the Jump Canada Hall of Fame Gala, held on Sunday, November 3, at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex in Toronto, ON. Four awards were presented in the categories of Official, Owner, Sponsor, and Volunteer of the Year.

Kim Morrison Named Official of the YearKim Morrison of Calgary, AB, was named the 2019 Official of the Year in recognition of her dedication to strengthening and improving the state of show jumping in Canada and beyond.

A former grand prix show jumping rider, Morrison became an official in order to give back to the sport that had given her so much as an athlete. She has built a distinguished career that has covered a variety of roles including judge, steward, and ground jury member. Holding her FEI Level 4 Jumping Judge and EC Senior Jumper Judge cards, Morrison’s expertise allows for the smooth and safe running of competitions at every level. Furthermore, her exemplary character and tremendous skill have made her a pillar of Canada’s show jumping community, as well as an outstanding representative of the maple leaf on the world stage.

Morrison’s international resume includes being a member of the Ground Jury at five World Cup Finals, the 2010 Alltech World Equestrian Games, and the 2012 London Olympic Games. She most recently acted as President of the Jumping Ground Jury at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

Despite her busy schedule, Morrison finds time to contribute to educational and mentorship initiatives. In fact, she taught an EC Jumper Judges Clinic on November 3 during the Royal Horse Show in Toronto, ON, the night before accepting the 2019 Official of the Year award. Morrison’s long and celebrated career is a testament not only to her professional excellence, but also to her complete devotion to the sport and the people that comprise it.

“In the almost 30 years of acting as an EC and FEI official, I have been extremely fortunate in the experiences I have been given,” said Morrison, who was also named the Official of the Year in 2013. “I have travelled all over the world, witnessed amazing sport, learned from the best, mentored young judges, and tried to make a positive impact. It is an honour to be named Official of the Year for 2019.”

Rosalind Schaefer and Wishing Well Farm Named 2019 Owner of the YearRosalind Schaefer’s Wishing Well Farm of Sands Point, NY, was named the Owner of the Year for 2019. Wishing Well Farm is the owner of Mario Deslauriers’ top mount, Bardolina 2, and part-owner of Amsterdam 27.

Deslauriers and Bardolina 2, a 10-year-old Holsteiner mare (Clarimo x Landos), were members of the fifth-placed Canadian team for the $290,000 Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ of the United States of America in February at the CSIO5* Palm Beach Masters in Wellington, FL. In June, the pair helped Canada win the $400,000 CSIO5* Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ of Canada in front of a home crowd in Langley, BC.

Wishing Well Farm owns Amsterdam 27 in partnership with Luja LLC, whose name comes from combining those of Deslauriers’ twin children, Lucy and Jack. A nine-year-old Holsteiner gelding (Catoki x Acord II), Amsterdam 27 made his Canadian team debut in the $150,000 CSIO4* Nations Cup at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL, where Canada placed third. Deslauriers and Amsterdam 27 were also members of Canada’s second-placed team in the $530,000 BMO Nations Cup at the CSIO5* Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ tournament in Calgary, AB. Prior to competing at Spruce Meadows, Deslauriers and Amsterdam 27 represented Canada at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, helping the team to place fourth overall before finishing 15th in the individual standings.

“I cannot begin to imagine a better owner than Rosalind and Wishing Well Farm,” said Deslauriers. “They are as supportive and enthusiastic when we are working at home as when we are at a major championship. From their willingness and excitement to lend Bardolina 2 to the Canadian team for the World Equestrian Games last year, to the same this year with Amsterdam 27 and the Pan American Games, their support never waivers. We are beyond fortunate and grateful to have Wishing Well Farm and Rosalind behind us and beside us!”

In addition to being announced during the Jump Canada Hall of Fame Gala, the Owner of the Year award was presented to Schaefer in the Coca-Cola Coliseum prior to the start of international show jumping competition on Wednesday evening, November 6, at the Royal Horse Show.

“I am absolutely overwhelmed,” said Schaefer after receiving her award. “It’s all because of Mario; he’s made it all happen! He’s found and trained these wonderful horses that can do the job. I’m very proud of him and the horses and so glad that Canada is able to enjoy them.”

The Owner of the Year Award was created to recognize the exceptional level of dedication, commitment, and support that owners generously provide in order to ensure that Canadian Equestrian Team athletes have access to world-class horses. For a full list of past recipients, click here.

BMO Financial Group Named Sponsor of the YearBMO Financial Group was once again recognized for its longstanding commitment to show jumping with the 2019 Sponsor of the Year award.

BMO first became involved with equestrian sport during the inaugural show jumping tournament held at Calgary’s Spruce Meadows in 1976. The following year, it sponsored its first Nations’ Cup and has never looked back, continuing to support the richest team show jumping event in North America. More than 40 years later, BMO continues to contribute to the sport’s growth, even expanding its support in 2019 with an exciting new initiative.

To commemorate 10-time Canadian Olympian Ian Millar’s retirement from international team competition, BMO introduced a new bursary program in recognition of Millar’s lifetime achievements. Announced during the 2019 Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ tournament, the Ian Millar Legacy Award will present a $10,000 bursary to any Canadian athlete making his or her Nations’ Cup debut in the BMO Nations’ Cup, held during the CSIO5* Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tournament. Together, BMO and Millar form the longest-running corporate/athlete relationship in the history of Canadian sport, and the Ian Millar Legacy Award will augment his new focus of developing horses and riders for the highest level of the sport.

“BMO Financial Group embodies all the characteristics of the perfect sports sponsor: loyalty, longevity, and participation, to mention a few,” said Millar. “I have been sponsored by BMO Financial for over 30 years, and the support that I received has been critical to my ability to sustain my commitment to our Canadian Show Jumping Team. Through the Ian Millar Legacy Award for Canadian BMO Nations’ Cup riders, BMO continues to support our team athletes going forward. I salute BMO Financial Group and congratulate them on receiving the 2019 Sponsor of the Year Award.”

“BMO is honoured to, once again, be recognized as a supporter of equestrian sport in Canada,” said Sue Bundy, Director of Corporate Sponsorships at BMO. “For over 40 years we have participated in the sport of show jumping, including our long-standing partnership with Ian. We look forward to recognizing new talent over the coming years.”

In addition to introducing the Ian Millar Legacy Award, BMO significantly increased the prize money for the BMO Nations’ Cup itself. The 2019 edition of the BMO Nations’ Cup featured a purse of $530,000, easily making it the richest Nations’ Cup held anywhere in North America. This helped Spruce Meadows to attract top talent from around the world, enhancing its world-class reputation, bettering competition opportunities for Canadian athletes on home soil, and engaging more spectators and supporters from across the nation.

It was fitting that the Sponsor of the Year award was presented during the Jump Canada Hall of Fame Gala, given that BMO has been the presenting sponsor of the event since its inauguration. During this year’s Gala, BMO announced its continued support for the 2020 edition.

Created in 2005, the Jump Canada Sponsor of the Year award recognizes the significant impact that corporate sponsorship has on Canadian show jumping. Given the wide berth of its longstanding support, BMO Financial Group also received the award in 2007.

Beth Underhill Recognized as Volunteer of the Year for 2019Held in strict confidence until the time of presentation, Canadian Olympian Beth Underhill of Schomberg, ON, was announced as this year’s recipient of the 2019 Volunteer of the Year award in recognition of the countless hours she has dedicated to ensuring the creation and continuation of world-class show jumping opportunities in Canada.

Underhill was the first person to hold the position of Equestrian Canada (EC) Jumping Youth Development Program Advisor since the program was launched in October 2015 until November 2018. In that role, she built a solid foundation for youth development and advancement centered on talent identification, support, and mentorship of teams and individuals at the FEI Children, Junior, and Young Rider levels. Underhill’s strong focus on educational opportunities, including organizing presentations featuring FEI officials and Olympic gold medalists such as Laura Kraut, Nick Skelton, and McLain Ward, inspired Canada’s rising stars and provided them with the resources necessary to succeed on their equestrian journeys.

In 2017, under Underhill’s guidance as chef d’equipe, Canada dominated the FEI North American Youth Championships (NAYC), bringing home seven medals including a complete sweep of the Young Rider individual podium. At the 2018 edition, again under Underhill’s leadership, Canada claimed four medals, including team and individual gold in the Children’s division.

After stepping down from the position of EC Jumping Youth Development Program Advisor, Underhill continued to volunteer as a member of the EC Jumping Committee and the Jumping High Performance Committee. In August of 2019, she was elected to the EC Board of Directors.

“Beth is tremendously deserving of the 2019 Volunteer of the Year Award,” said Pam Law, Chair of the EC Jumping Committee. “While actively pursuing her own illustrious career as a professional rider and coach, she found time to volunteer on the Jump Canada Board for many years. Not only was she invaluable in providing input to us from the grand prix riders’ perspective, she also developed our Under 25 rider program, served as chef d’equipe for numerous youth teams in major competitions with unparalleled success, and brought her valuable and respected opinion to Jump Canada’s table in many other areas.”

SPECIAL RECOGNITION FOR MARK SAMUEL AND BETH UNDERHILL

Outgoing members Mark Samuel of Oakville, ON, and Beth Underhill of Schomberg, ON, were recognized for their long-standing service to the EC Jumping Committee (formerly Jump Canada) during the Jump Canada Hall of Fame Gala. As one of the founders of Jump Canada, Samuel has been integral to the committee’s success over the years, always leading with a keen sense of business acumen and the ability to foresee the long-term impact of decisions. Underhill was equally a valuable contributor to the success of the hunter/jumper discipline domestically, representing the perspective of the Canadian grand prix riders and developing programs for youth engagement and participation. Both made a tremendous impact on the Canadian hunter/jumper landscape during their many countless hours of volunteer service.

NEW JUMP CUP INITIATIVE INTRODUCED FOR 2020The members of the EC Jumping Committee are pleased to introduce a new initiative to support EC-sanctioned hunter/jumper competitions at the bronze, silver, gold, and platinum levels in complying with the new rule requiring safety cups with breakaway track systems in all competition and warm-up rings.

At all EC-sanctioned competitions, Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) approved safety cups with breakaway track systems (metal or plastic) will be required on the back rails of oxers; middle and back rails of triple bars; and rails over water. This requirement is mandatory in all jumper competition rings and all jumper and hunter warm-up rings as of January 1, 2020. As of January 1, 2021, FEI-approved safety cups and breakaway track systems will also be required in all hunter competition rings at EC-sanctioned competitions.

To assist competition organizers with the cost of compliance, the EC Jumping Committee has earmarked $100,000 in Jump Canada levy funds towards the purchase of FEI-approved jump cups and breakaway track systems. Competition organizers simply need to submit their receipt(s) showing proof of purchase by October 1, 2020, to be reimbursed up to $3,000 CAD per competition venue.

For more information or to submit receipts, please email [email protected]. For a full list of FEI-approved safety cup and breakaway track system manufacturers, click here.

YOUNG GUNS! PROFILING SABRINA VON BUTTLARBy Emily Randolph

Hailing from multiple generations of Olympic equestrians, it comes as no surprise that Sabrina von Buttlar of Stouffville, ON, is also traveling the road to riding success. Her path most recently included a victory in the 2019 Jump Canada Medal National Final at the illustrious Royal Horse Show in Toronto, ON. The Jump Canada Medal win signaled the realization of a dream the 18-year-old athlete has had for nearly a decade.

A Dream is BornVon Buttlar’s dream of winning the Jump Canada Medal National Final was formed around the same time that she began competing in the equitation division, but her desire to ride and compete successfully was fostered long before that. In fact, it is in her genes.

Von Buttlar’s grandmother, Eva Maria Pracht, is a two-time Olympian and was a member of the Canadian dressage team that brought home the bronze medal from the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Her great grandfather, the legendary Dr. Josef Neckermann, won six medals in four Olympic appearances (1960, 1964, 1968, and 1972) for his native Germany including two team gold medals. When Sabrina’s own parents, Martina Pracht and Juergen von Buttlar, married, they brought together the best of both the dressage and show jumping worlds – Martina having represented Canada at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics while Juergen was a renowned show jumping trainer working with the likes of Canadian Olympic gold medalist, Eric Lamaze.

Sabrina von Buttlar and Cinco have honed their skills in the equitation ring during their four years together.

Given her heritage, Sabrina was unsurprisingly presented with the opportunity to ride from a very early age. Her parents, however, provided Sabrina with a large number of alternative options and even tried to persuade her to try something different as her sport of choice. With horses in her blood, riding ultimately won out.

“My parents have always said, ‘Sabrina, you don’t need to ride to please us!’” said Sabrina. “And I mean, they really tried. I danced. I swam. They tried everything else, but I only wanted to ride. I never played with dolls. I only played with horses.”

Learning from the BestIt was the early recognition of Sabrina’s shared passion for horses, even amidst encouraging her to try other activities, that led Juergen to ask Canadian show jumping team athlete, Erynn Ballard, if she would be interested in helping to train a then five-year-old Sabrina. Ballard accepted and, 14 years later, she is still Sabrina’s primary trainer, alongside Katie Uloth, Blythe Karolyi, and Sabrina’s own parents.

“Erynn and I have been together for almost my entire life, which is kind of crazy to think about!” said Sabrina of riding at the Ballard family’s Looking Back Farm with Ballard and her assistant trainer, Uloth. “We have a lot of fun. Erynn and Katie both have so much experience. Sometimes they have different things to say, and it’s nice to hear something from two different perspectives.”

Sabrina also gains valuable perspective from her dad, who she trains with throughout the year.

“My dad is on the road much of the year because he works for Ben Asselin,” explained Sabrina of her father, who played an instrumental role in Lamaze’s early successes during the many years they worked together. “In the beginning of the year, I was in Calgary with him; it was just dad and me. Then I came back, and it’s just been Erynn and me. In Florida, that’s when they really split the training. My dad rides my horses and makes sure that they’re great on the flat.”

With a well-earned reputation for being an exceptional flat rider, Juergen could be considered Sabrina’s secret weapon in the competition arena.

“He’s always there to help me,” continued Sabrina of her dad. “It’s a lot of help when my dad rides the horses. He watches things and then we adjust. It’s super to have parents that ride and understand it because then they can help me. Both of my parents are so supportive of my riding. I have a lot of friends whose parents aren’t necessarily involved in the riding, so it’s a little bit harder for them to understand. For us, it’s something that my parents and I work on together.”

Sabrina is quick to credit her parents, as well as Ballard, Uloth, and Karolyi, with her Jump Canada Medal success. She’s also quick to recognize Cinco, the 19-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding that carried her to a national title at the Royal Horse Show.

Claiming the Championship with Cinco“This is the question I’ve been waiting for because this horse deserves a lot of credit!” said Sabrina when asked about Cinco following her victory. The von Buttlar family purchased Cinco four years ago with the idea that the gelding could be Sabrina’s first jumper, but the pair soon found success in the equitation ring.

“It was a little bit difficult in the beginning because he’d been a jumper for his entire life,” said Sabrina, who also topped the 2019 Ontario Hunter Jumper Association Jumper Medal Finals with the gelding. “It was a bit of a difficult transition for him but in the end, it turned out he’s truly the best horse ever. He couldn’t be any more perfect.

“He’s super honest, and he wants to go in the ring and please all the time,” continued Sabrina. “At 19, he’s an oldie. We’ve taken a lot of precautions to make sure that he’s in the best health. He doesn’t feel like he’s 19, and I don’t think he thinks he is either. He really is the best horse.”

Sabrina’s strong partnership with Cinco was evident throughout the Jump Canada Medal National Final on November 5, where the pair was one of 25 entries who qualified from across Canada. Sabrina and Cinco delivered well-executed performances over the jumping

phase, the flat phase, and final testing of the top five before ultimately clinching the national championship title.

“When you start doing the equitation, you always dream of winning an equitation final at some point, but you never really think it’s going to happen,” said Sabrina. “It’s a dream come true.”

With one dream fulfilled, Sabrina already has her sights set on her next goals, including growing in the jumper ring with her newest mount, an eight-year-old gelding named Peregrine.

“He’s green, and I don’t have that much experience in the jumper ring, so we’re going to grow and learn together,” said Sabrina of her new partner. “I’d like to jump at the North American Youth Championships and the Under 25 at some point. Further down the road, I’d love to represent Canada on a team.”

Given her family history, the odds are certainly in her favour.

DEMISE OF THE WORLD EQUESTRIAN GAMESFollowing an ill-fated edition in Tryon, NC, in 2018, the World Equestrian Games will not return in 2022. While having all eight Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) disciplines showcased in a single venue appealed to horse sport fans, the enormous cost and logistics involved in producing such a spectacle has proven to be too much to bear in recent editions. At its recent General Assembly in Moscow, Russia, the FEI Board elected to divide the 2022 World Championships for its various disciplines between multiple venues.

Herning, Denmark, will host the FEI World Championships for four disciplines – show jumping, dressage, para dressage, and vaulting – in August of 2022. Herning previously hosted the 2013 FEI European Championships for show jumping, dressage, and para dressage, and stages a qualifying leg of the FEI Dressage World Cup™ annually. The FEI World Championships for eventing and driving will be hosted by Pratoni del Vivaro, Italy, in September of 2022.

“When we opened the process for the FEI World Championships 2022 to single and multi-discipline bids, our intention was to have events that were more manageable and sustainable at proven venues,” said FEI Secretary General Sabrina Ibáñez. “By allocating these multi-discipline Championships to Herning and Pratoni del Vivaro, we’re working with hosts that already have the necessary experience and required infrastructure in place to organize world-class equestrian championships.”

During the same meeting, the 2022 FEI World Cup™ Final for show jumping was awarded to Leipzig, Germany, while Omaha, NE, will host the Final for the second time in 2023. In 2024, the FEI World Cup™ Final will make its debut in the Middle East, hosted by Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
