Review What comes next?

Before you can plan your actions, you need to know who you are & where you are going.

Before or when you decide where you are going, you should determine why you want to go there.

Vision (where) comes before strategy (what)

Strategy (what) comes before structure (how & who)

Organizing: Real Life Take-up

How easy was it to find the constitution, by-laws, & organization structure of your church? When were they last updated?

Are they designed to facilitate ministry or stifle it?

Page 8: The “Nuts & Bolts” of Ministry Management Session 2b – Feb 13 Organizing

Real Life Take-up When were these last developed or

reviewed & reaffirmed? What was happening around your

ministry when these things we initially determined?

What process was used to develop them? Who was involved in developing, refining,

and approving/adopting them?

Page 9: The “Nuts & Bolts” of Ministry Management Session 2b – Feb 13 Organizing

Biblical Precedent

Jethros’ instruction to Moses in Exodus 18

what was happening to Moses? what was the work he was doing? what did Jethro advise Moses to do? why did Jethro give Moses this guidance what did Moses do? what was the outcome? what can we learn about structure and

organization from this example?

Page 15: The “Nuts & Bolts” of Ministry Management Session 2b – Feb 13 Organizing

Functional Organization

Vision Values Strategy how do we make this happen?

Structure an organization with clearly defined roles and job expectations along with metrics to reveal progress or achievement

Page 16: The “Nuts & Bolts” of Ministry Management Session 2b – Feb 13 Organizing

Put the Horse in front of the Cart, pointed in the right direction. Why?

How do you know which end to put a horse to a cart? Who will drive it? Organize

How do you know what way to point the horse? How do the horse & driver know what to do? Lead

How do you know if you are moving toward your pre-determined destination? What are the milestones? Plan

How do you know when you have arrived? Vision What happens if you go off course? How will you

know? What should happen? Systems/accountability

Page 17: The “Nuts & Bolts” of Ministry Management Session 2b – Feb 13 Organizing

Functional Organization…

Organizing is figuring out what resources (people & technology) and structure (job descriptions & reporting relationships) you need in order to get your organization to it’s desired destination.

Building a strong organizational structure will ensure: The vision is achieved The vision is sustained

Page 18: The “Nuts & Bolts” of Ministry Management Session 2b – Feb 13 Organizing

Legal Organization:

In order to exist in Canada as an organization, especially one that is desiring to have a not-for-profit or charitable status you will need to:

Design and articulate a constitution describing the essence of the organization (i.e. purpose, membership, dissolution, affiliations if any, statement of beliefs, etc)

determine and develop a governance structure – how will your organization operate formally. This governance structure will also serve to facilitate ministry or, if not a good form of governance, it could easily stifle ministry.

Page 19: The “Nuts & Bolts” of Ministry Management Session 2b – Feb 13 Organizing

Reflection on Organization:

How clear are your employees as to their job expectations & performance evaluations?

How clear are your volunteers (including leaders at various levels) as to their role expectations?

How well do the expectations align with the purpose and goals of the ministry?

Do the volunteers and employees understand how their particular function affects the whole?

How clear and how functional is the relationship between the board and the Sr Pastor/Employed Leader?

Questions…..

Page 21: The “Nuts & Bolts” of Ministry Management Session 2b – Feb 13 Organizing

What will you do?

Where will you look for guidance to determine vision and purpose for your ministry?

How will you ensure the “six questions” can be clear and compelling for your ministry?

What will you do this week to ensure the plans you have are clear, aligned with purpose & vision, and are being executed with excellence?

How does your structure & organization support your ministry priorities (mission & strategy) ?
